"Protect" arrived prematurely

I applaud Paul J. Watson for what is clearly an offering from his heart. His desire to glorify God with this inventive story is evident and, for that, he is to be commended.

It is tempting to accentuate the positive and spare the feelings of the author, but is it responsible? I am a Christian and probably share most, if not all, of Mr. Watson's beliefs. Were I to put a five-star rating on this book for that reason, or out of a desire to encourage him, I would be falsely representing myself and, in my opinion, the product.

I read the interview with Paul at [...], referenced in Josh Olds' review, and I found the author's comments about the editing process very interesting. Referring to the length of time it took to get his book into print, Paul says, "let's just say there was a lot of editing that needed to be done, which meant working a lot with my editors."

I say interesting because the one thought that occurred to me continually while reading this book was that it desperately needed an editor to clean it up in more than a few spots. Awkward phrasings, misused words, and technical inconsistencies appear with enough frequency to distract from the story.

While the plot has some interesting elements, the unrealistic dialog and situations made it a book I had to force myself to finish. The world of Terra feels too small, events rushed, and the characters... just don't quite seem alive to me. I will say that there are things in the story that I would have been interested in seeing further developed, such as a passing reference to the origin of the chief antagonist that appears in the book's climactic final battle.

I do appreciate that this is Watson's first book and, to be honest, I fault the publisher more than him that it saw print without more refinement. I also think that finding ways to creatively incorporate the Christian worldview into a fantasy/sci-fi story can be challenging and, primarily through allegory, Watson does this.

Watson has done the most difficult thing, in my view; taking an idea, fleshing it out, and seeing it through to completion. With his next offering, he needs to bypass his overly enthusiastic cheering section and put the manuscript in the hands of someone who will be honest enough with him to help him make it the finished work that I wish this had been.

I'll be pulling for him.

If your name is Paul J. Watson I highly suggest you not read this review. This is not a line by line critique of your book so it won't benefit you at all to read it. My goal is not to hurt your feelings or take away any motivation you have to write more books but I must be honest when reviewing a book and therefore this review is not going to be pretty.

In the Christian book industry (or ministry) there are not a lot of fantasy novels so when one comes on the market I like to read it.

When you first meet Doro, you'd think he was an ordinary man, the same as you or I. To describe the plot as above surely doesn't do justice to Wild Seed, which is easily one of the finest science fiction novels ever written; but more than that, it is a great work of literature, period, that explores deep philosophical issues and vividly explores the extraordinary long lives of two fascinatingly-drawn characters.

For a book as brilliant as this, it would be easy for a narrator to just convey the text and get out of its way, but Dion Graham somehow manages to add yet another layer to an already rich and complex narrative by giving voice to it with such emotion and gravitas. Graham provides a variety of character voices to the extent that he seems to be a vocal chameleon; the character of Doro alone requires him to change his voice into a number of different accents, all of which Graham ably handles. But perhaps what makes this performance truly stand out is the intensity of Graham's narration in between dialogue, which really drives home the power of Butler's prose.

The most terrible villain I've ever read about.

What did you love best about Wild Seed?

The villain is so powerful, single-minded and so apathetic, without being at all campy or forced. He only had one main superpower and it wasn't blowing stuff up or moving objects, but it made him so frightening. This was the most creative story I've read in a long time.

Mothstorm: The Horror from Beyond Uranus Georgium Sidus! book # 3 in the Larklight series

gathers familiar & new characters together for

the 3rd & final in the series. It tidies up loose ends

very satisfactorily. I love the artwork & the somewhat proper yet oddly campy language.

Larklight:

introduces you to the fascinating, slightly steampunk

Victorian world, delightfully narrated in turns by siblings Art & Myrtle . The creativity of the author infuses the story with so much ingenuity that you can't help but smile and marvel at how such impossible ideas could

somehow ,magically just work.The wealth of Characters

is pretty astounding. I read these books out of turn,

starting with Starcross & then Mothstorm.

Larklight (#1)is my least favorite, but is still worthy of praise, as not only is the physical form of the book captivating,(wonderful artwork throughout)but, so also is the text with it's very quirky,"proper" prose.

The saga continues with yet more mystery &

adventure. This is my favorite book of the series and the one that got me to read the others.

These are the sort of books that one would give as a present to a young 4th-5th grade avid reader. This series is absolutely heirloom worthy in it's hardcover form.

Hooray for adventure!

This is a ripping yarn that combines the best elements of Victorian purple prose, space pirates, evil galactic spiders (with bowler hats), and a house that floats beyond the Moon with a cranky gravity generator. While definitely aimed at the younger set, it is completely enjoyable for those more advanced in years if not maturity. I especially appreciated the subtle homage to The War of the Worlds --so well done it would never disturb a reader unfamiliar with the quote, but causing added glee for the cognoscenti.

If you require excessive rationality, dislike silliness, and judge books based on how many approved literary vegetables they force you to eat, you will not like this book. Everybody else... you are going to have such jolly fun!

Philip Reeve and David Wyatt are back for another incredible book!

I cannot express how much I love these books!

I am utterly impressed with Reeve's detailed, personable characters that are consistent and yet allowed the room to grow. The characters in this series are so delightful and varied...

Defeated

This book defeated me, I am ashamed to say. I do most of my audio listening whilst driving, but this requires you too pay too much attention, and thus, while driving you lose important plot points, for two reasons:

1) There is a lot of tech within the book, and diluted time due to near-light speed travel on ships, and there is a lot of scene-shifting within chapters, which leads me to...

2) Other reviewers have alluded to it already, but it was a bad move not to have some sort of pause or audio-cue when scene-shifting between chapters. What happens is that John Lee (whose other stuff is ok, in my opinion), moves between scenes without taking a breath and you completely lose where you are whilst driving.

Shame I have to give it up, it's supposed to be a classic series. But them's the breaks.

Challenging noir space opera bursting with ideas

Revelation Space has three main characters one of Russian decent, one of French and one Indian, with many Japanese characters figuring prominently, and the narrator portrays each one with the appropriate accent. The perspective of the novel shifts between these characters liberally within each chapter. Further, future tech flies fast and furious with explanations dispersed (sometimes) over several chapters. Taken together these factors make for a challenging read, but the fast-paced intricate and mind-bending ride is incredibly rewarding. The Revelation Space universe is proof that Reynolds' space operas are equal to the likes of M. John Harrison's or Iain M. Banks'.

A challenge that's worth the investment

A great read. As another reviewer said, this is very much in the style of Peter F. Hamilton's books. Epic and complex. I started getting frustrated at the beginning since things don't seem to make sense, but if you stick with it then everything falls into place.

I wish a knew what some of the tougher scientific concepts mean because there's some stuff here that is beyond my understanding but in a way that made it even more interesting.

I love John Lee's narration and characterization in the book, although I do agree that the cuts between scenes are so short that you get confused when things end and start. Other than that I look forward to the next book which I'm downloading as I write this.

Frustrations with narrator and editing

The book so far is very good. However, the combination of the narrating and one particular editing decision has turned me off of the audio version. So far I have only been unable to finish one audiobook I've purchased from Audible.com (out of about 150) and I may now have to change that number to two.

The Narrator: John Lee has never been my favorite, but I've had him read four other books in my collection, and he did fine.

The Shrike Awaits. Enter The Time Tombs...

I read this series back in its first published hardcovers, so I look at this book with a judgmental eye - Is it a worthy listen, and its subsequent writings? Here's my take on this audiobook.

This is outstanding scifi, to the point. It reminds me of "The Mote In God's Eye," in its depth, solid character backstories and various perspectives. As in the mentioned comparison, this is complex storytelling that makes you consider as you listen. Each character has purpose and propels the story along, often in unexpected ways. This is THOUGHTFUL scifi, with tremendous respect for the reader's/listener's time, intellect, and maturity. If you want pulp scifi, go listen to Heinlein - This one's for those hungry for a story with meat on its bones, one that makes you want more. One that makes you want to listen to it again, in case you missed something important, and that's quite possible, with this fantastic scifi audiobook.

What's it all about, you ask? Again, Audible listener, I give only hints in reviews, neither plots nor spoilers here. Here's a taste of what your hear...

Knights Templar traveling across the galaxy in living trees. A undying priest carries

a nightmarish secret from an abandoned zombie-like congregation, a woman becomes younger each day, and races to beat the clock, literally. A virtual reality-trained military leader seeks the love of a woman haunting him in his computer-driven landscape. A drunken writer seeks the final and ultimate story. A spacefaring horde, soon to arrive in the known space of man, to conquer and enslave the billions that fear their arrival. My Favorite Book for the past 10 years

Replay was the first book that I searched for when I joined audible. I am glad to see that it is finally available.

Replay has been my favorite book for the past 10 years. I have two hard cover copies one for my library and a second that I use as a loaner. I have lent the book out to no fewer than 10 friends. I have not gotten anything less than rave reviews from those that have read it.

The writing is excellent. Imagine if you could live your life over again. Would you end up the same person? What would you do differently? What could you do now to change your future? These are all wonderful topics that the book explores. The book also demonstrates how fleeting life is and that each moment should be savored to its fullest.

This was my third time through the book and I was so moved that I wanted to write a fan letter to the author. I was disappointed to see that he had passed away of a heart attack. One could only hope that he is Replaying his life again.

Don't just trust my opinion. Visit Amazon.com there are 313 reviews for this book and it got 4.5 stars. Enjoy.

Groundhog's Day, It's Not!

Groundhogs Day was a fun movie where the character wakes up to the same dayday after day after day. According to what Ive read, this book was the inspiration for the movie. Both the movie and the book are about reliving the past but thats where the similarities end.

Instead of living one day over and over, try living 25 years over each time. What would you change? Or would you live each life in the same style every time? You have many choices of how to live out those years by making lots of money (since you already know the future), becoming a recluse and getting away from it all, living it somewhere in the middle as a family man, etc.

Then come the moral questions of whether you try to do good for others leading them away from bad choices, disasters or even helping your country to avoid major conflict. But how much information is too much to give? Would you try saving President Kennedy? Every life is a new life. What would you choose to do knowing the future history? Or will it be the same future history when you tell others of upcoming events?

I had trouble laying the book aside. Enjoy the listen!

Underground Classic

30 years ago I picked this book up at a Library sell. This was early in my reading life and it was part of the reason I continue to read today. All my life I have wished I could go back in my life with the knowledge I have today and correct the wrongs I have committed to others and take advantage of the opportunities I missed in the past. I am not talking money, but personal relations, maybe take my foot out of my mouth and not say some of the stupid things I have said in the past.

This book explores these issues and more. It is not great literature and is a little depressing in parts, but still makes your mind itch.

Not impressed

I wish more people would take a moment to write a review. It would help in trying to get a feel for a story before buying it and taking time to listen.

The description was a bit misleading for this story. I was expecting a science fiction adventure in the line of Day of the Triffids, or something like that. Instead it is just a journey through the amazon, with loads of descrition of what an Amozon journey would be like. However, the story just never took off for me, as it takes so long to deal with the actual premise, and even then there is little discussion of what has happened or why or what is really going on - just how it affects the few main characters in their amazon journe and the tribes people. Perhaps it is just not my cup of tea, and others would find this more interesting, but I thought the descition given wasn't a fair assessment of the story and I was disappointed and a little bored by it.

I was unhappy to find out at the end, I am only getting started, and have no idea when it will be finished (if ever).

like the atmosphere

i liked the desperate atmosphere created. however I was disappointed to find out it was book one of a series and I don't know when there will be a sequel to finish the story.

I'm a Halo fan and I liked listening to this story

I've played the Halo games on Xbox360. I was told this book tells about the story before the 1st Halo game. I'm not sure how non-Halo fans would like this because without playing the game I wouldn't have felt attached to the people in the story. There's no reason to really care about them. But as a Halo fan I liked learning about the pre-game experience and how everything began, including why I wear a large green armor.

Great book and easy listen.

This book is obviously based on a video game. I'm not sure what some other reviewers were hoping to get out of the story, but I don't think it was meant to be thousands of pages of character development just to get to the inevitable ending that most anyone who played the game knew was coming. I do not think it is a rip off of Ender's Game at all, sure they start as kids learning to fight, but that's where the similarity stops. I found it very entertaining. It provides the back story for Master Chief and initially develops the canon of the Halo Universe very well. Because of this book I ended up listening/reading every other Halo book and have found the ones written by Eric Nylund to be the best. If they ever get around to making the Halo movie and want it to be successful, they had better not deviate much from this book.

Great story. Good narration.

Only problem is the narrator kept pronouncing the J in Mjolnir as a J sound and not a Y sound.

Nylund is an outstanding Scifi author

I am a fan of Scifi literature. Without a doubt this is one of the best audiobooks I have had the pleasure of listening to. Eric Nylund is one of the best writers I have encountered in this genre. If you were only going to listen to one SciFi book, you would be well advised to listen to this book.

Fun book

I was weiry of this title bought it strickly on reviews and that i had a 10 hour drive ahead of me and needed a book to get me through it. im a fan of military sci fi but im often turned off by the endless model numbers and specs some authors like to give. i would compare this to star wars books but better.
