The Narrator sets the Tone

I had read the first book, Survivor Quest, in the Way of the Shaman, series but decided to listen to the second book The Karloss Gambit, on Audible; reading the first book without the influence of a narrator made the story seem somewhat more intense. I realize this is a LITRPG genre series and therefore probably should be a little lighthearted; and its not that the narrator, Johnathan Yen, did a bad job, in fact he was very credible giving each character their own voice. Its just, in my opinion his tone made the story seem more juvenile and not the intense adventure I had read in the first book.

Having said all of that I like the series so far, although it is not complete and I dont see Audible or Amazon offering the third book yet. The same thing happened in the Play to Live Series, by D Rus; another LITRPG series that I like and Audible listeners are left hanging waiting on the completion.

Im giving the story four stars only because the ending seemed rushed and it is not complete. The narrator four stars even though I thought a more intense reading would have given this story a completely different experience he did a credible job. Overall four stars

never thought an MMO would make such a good book

I listened to both the first book and this book in secession and I must say that I was greatly surprised by how well the story has turned out. on the whole this book was wonderful to read the characters are rememberable as well as the world that they live in. I would say that this book could be listened to by both Gamers and non-gamers though the constant speak of the game mechanics and system mechanics would greatly throw off a lot of the non-gamer readers. and let it be said that if a game like this was ever to come out, virtual or not there would be many players who would never leave its company.

the narrator wow he did a great job at narrating all the characters in their own unique way had a few moments where the voice kind of fell short. In moments where the character was screaming or enraged I didn't quite feel what I was supposed to from the character.

A Guilty pleasure

I've been on a Litrpg binge lately, Read all of the Play to Live series, Awaken Online, Otherlife, The Land, and now This series.

I have to say it's probably my least favorite of them, not to say it is bad at all I actually really enjoy the premise of it, however I find many of the mechanics of the world hard to believe in. (I know how that sounds) I also think it's a bit simple minded overall and rarely walks it's own path.

I think this book targets the younger of the litrpg fans to be sure.

But if your like me and completely addicted to this Genre of book give it a listen, it's worth a credit and the voice performance from the reader is really well done.

Excellent with just one regret...

Loved this book. Anyone who's played RPG will enjoy and relate to this story. While listening to Survival Quest I mentioned it to my son and bought the Kindle version for him. He devoured it. He started reading it at 10PM and finished the book at 5AM in one reading.

My only regret is that there are currently only two books in the series and the second one will go by way too fast. I thoroughly enjoy reading more installments in this story line.

Great Narrator, Great book

So this book takes place in the fictional future with a very futuristic video game. The world outside of the game, the real world is not very important. So the majority of the book take place in a MMO VR game, and some of things that are different from the typical fantasy is that the adventure takes place in an MMO and these imitations are embraced. So if you are not much of a gamer this book might not be for you.,

The narrator elevates the story, and its very easy to picture what is going on, and you get the extra context of tone and such from the voice of the narrator. The narrator does an amazing job.

I really enjoyed listening to this novel, so would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Fantasy and Gaming (not necessarily videogames). This series looks to be a champion of the genre of LitRPG.

Great for fans of RPO

if you are someone who enjoys the game here and there or if you are a hard core gamer, you will love this book. One of mytop 5 books is Ready Player One and this is on the same lines.

Non Stop Stats and no story

If you don't play video games this book will not make any sense to you. I don't rate this negatively for that at all.

I want to be ARMOUR

I am quadriplegic and applaud Mr Fox's creativity in turning the disabled into powerful mech warriors. This is the first series I listened to where the disabled play an integral part of the story. The battles and fast paced action is entertaining but one of the core principles of the series is inspiring: ALL LIFE IS PRECIOUS human, alien, AI, tube grown humans, disabled, robots etc. Sentience is the means by which the universe is self-ware.

Everything you ever wanted in space warfare.

Space marines, giant robot armor, space battles, manipulative AI, mysterious aliens, and a human race struggling to start over from scratch while fighting a war that they have little understanding of...what more could you want?

"The Ember War" is so satisfyingly entertaining for science fiction adventure fans that it is a wander that it isn't a household name yet. The writing for it all has so much personality and characterization that the story's pacing is perfect. Richard Fox did a fantastic job putting this story together.

Then Luke Daniels does the narration and the audiobook experience will hook any listener instantly for the entire read through books 1 and 2. His ability to add personality to all these characters and make you care about each of them just using his voice is incredible.

"The Ember War" is definitely a series this reviewer will continue to follow and is highly, HIGHLY, recommended to anyone who has ever enjoyed any science fiction adventure on any form of media.

It doesn't get much better than this!

This series broke my heart a million times. It made me forget what I was doing and tune out the world. It made me hold my breath and laugh out loud. This is some seriously good writing. I'm normally not a Sci Fi girl but I'm so glad I tried this out. The world is expertly crafted and I fell in love with the characters. I feel like they are my friends and I'm sad that it's over.

I highly recommend this to anyone who loves an excellent story with believable characters who are flawed and imperfect but make you love them, forgive them, cheer for them and cry for them.

Tim Gerard Reynolds is also one of my favorite readers (why I got this book in the first place actually, along with a good review from someone I follow) and he did an amazing job, as always.

The narration and content = outstanding

If I would have known how great a series I was about to get into, I would have waited for a weekend where I was not so busy. I blew through these books in 4 days. The feeling of satisfaction I had after reading the last page was sublime. Anyone who has a great imagination pick this book up.

Gory damn magnificent!

Morning Star, Pierce Brown's thrilling conclusion to the Red Rising trilogy more than lives up to expectations based on the the first two volumes. What begins from the low point with Darrow's capture at the end of volume 2, proceeds through a series of two steps forward and one step back as Darrow must constantly second guess both his friends and enemies while he continues to excel at doing the unexpected. The core of the resolution of the multiple eight balls Darrow finds himself behind is to methodically pick apart the societal hold by exploiting the weaknesses and animosities among the outer worlds, Mars (meaning the jackal) and the core. Rather than a systematic, well executed take-down, the denouement morphs into one potential catastrophe after another until even in the face of eventual victory Brown still manages to surprise with left field turn of events.

The sci-fi elements are muted with no new elements relative to earlier installments and stay well in the background as a supporting role. Beyond the thriller aspects of the storytelling, Brown explores relationships along with differing attitudes and beliefs that drive the main characters around Darrow. Each supporting character, Mustang, Cassius, Sevro, Victra, Roque, Quicksilver, etc.

An OK end to an otherwise great trilogy.

Any additional comments?

One book has to be the worst of the 3. This one's it. Be warned, its painfully slow & hard to get through. The book can be edited from 20 hours to about 5 and still tell the same story - a lot of nothing happens. Also the author did not make me dislike the people who (I think) you are suppose to dislike by the end of the story. Their end seemed unfitting and I was actually still on their side... If you already read the first 2 than, of course, you have to read this... I found it a little disappointing; hopefully you like it better than I did.

This makes me question Audible

I really can't add much that the other detailed reviews has already covered. This installment was a jumbled mess that read more like a first draft outline than a finished work. The first two books were great and it made the third book that much more disappointing. But this book is getting a 4.5 star average review while most of the active reviewers are mostly negative. That makes me question Audibles star review system. Most of the people that read this book and were into this series would have acknowledged this poor offering by Moss. It makes me think that Audible is infested by bots that give good reviews to keep poor books viable to potential readers. Nobody new to the series is going to start the first book if they see that the series drops off at the end. So to sell the series they prop up a bad book.

Very. technical and hard ro follow.

Too technical and hard to follow. 1st 2 books were great but I was lost in third.

Huge letdown

The first book was good, the second book was average and the last book a huge letdown. Story goes off on weird tangents that never go anywhere. Main characters built up in the first two books become minor sidelines in the third. All the tension built up over all three books comes to a fizzling, anti-climatic ending.

What a colossal waste of time Mr Moss!

Awesome!

Great continuation of an awesome story! R.C. Bray narrates it perfectly! Can't wait for the 3rd book.

I've been yawning a lot through out the audio book

way too many boring dialogues which seemed more like a written script for a series than a novel.

Best of the Best Sci Fi

What did you love best about Fear the Survivors?

I have read a few reviews & while I agree it moves a little slower than the outstanding first audiobook "Fear The Sky". It has more to do with the Sci Fi tech being explained and laying the groundwork for the next book. However the ending of this book was outstanding & I am super excited for the finale which I have already pre ordered.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I especially liked the development of Lord Mantil, watching his character become more human and a very caring figure for someone he is looking out for. You'll see once you read it.

What about R. C. Brays performance did you like?

Absolutely fantastic. To talk about RC Bray's performance as a great narrator really does not fully explain how he adds to the story, almost making the characters jump out of the audiobook for the listeners to meet. Simply the best of the best narrators. Pure joy to listen to the man.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The ending as Neil's character grew and morphed into the person/leader he has become. Amazing to see how far Neil's as a character has evolved into. Again expert and beautifully delivered by RC. No surprise there.

Any additional comments?

This is simply the best Sci Fi audiobook/book I have listened to or read. Great story with even better Sci Fi tech coupled with plenty of action. Simply outstanding.

Most of the book sets the stage

Book 2 in the Fear Saga continues where book 1 left off. The two good-guy alien androids are helping Earth gain the valuable tech theyll need to have any hope of fighting off the coming armada.

Firstly, it's always great to read stories about people of color in scifi and fantasy. We do exist in the future.

Binti was unsurprisingly inventive and well written, as this is written by Nnedi O. My favorite bit tho is that this simple tale is so chock full of potential lessons and messages. For this alone it is worth every minute it takes to complete.

Initially Intimated

This genre was different for me. I'd seen ppl mentioning this book & author on Twitter which piqued my interest. I bought the book months ago and added the Audible option to it but did not listen to it until yesterday (12.30.16). I absolutely loved it! I laughed, cried, and wanted more. I hadn't realized it was a novella until I was halfway through it. Admittedly, I had to condition my ears and my brain to listen and understand an accent with inflections, enunciation, and pronunciation that I was not used to hearing. In other words, I had to stop being lazy. The narrator was excellent. I truly almost missed out on a wonderful experience. I was on that journey with Binti. The descriptions were so brilliant. I felt a range of emotions with her and for her. I was afraid for her through most of the story. I was proud of her too. And I was SO offended that a stranger touched her hair without asking that I may have blurted out some expletives on her behalf. I am going to read it. I need to see the words. I will probably end up buying a hard copy as well so I can read it slow and write in the margins. Then I will listen to it again. I was sad when it ended because I wasn't ready for the journey to end. I want to know how her parents will react. And how her people will respond to her being a pioneer. I recommend that everyone read this book.

Amazing

I've been inhaling science fiction for almost 50 years. This book had several major ideas I hadn't seen before, including an interesting take on the Fermi paradox.

This is hard science fiction. There is a fair bit of delayed gratification where he seems to have wandered off into the weeds and you wonder what his editor was smoking, but then he comes back, taps it gently, the egg opens, and you realize that you were set up. Beautiful.

A New Favorite

Where does Dark Forest rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

The title of my review says it. If you enjoyed The Three Body Problem, you'll enjoy this too. There are good reasons why many science fiction fans around the world find Cixin Liu so noteworthy.

What did you like best about this story?

He writes highly distinctive and original space opera, on a grand scale and in an entirely modern way. And he does it while investing his fully-imagined characters with specific and very interesting complexities.

The society-building, world-building and alien-building here are equally outstanding. And if you like interesting science with your science fiction- it is offered in abundance.

Too many books these days are thinly-disguised clones of some other writer's original success. I'm so bored with copies of copies.

But that makes it exhilarating to encounter a new modern master of this genre, who tells his own tale on his own creative terms.

Which scene was your favorite?

If a book is interesting enough in a sustained way, as this one is, there will be no such thing as a single favorite scene. This is not a question asked of a great whole. Also, this question solicits spoilers.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Far from it. This is a highly complex story which requires and deserves time and attention- not fast food.

Any additional comments?

Some may also like that there are a few common contemporary features absent in this trilogy so far.

The author doesn't feel a pressing literary need to add explicit sex, endless cursing, or gratuitous space battles to the clever unfolding of good ideas.

I haven't finished this book yet, and even if I had, I wouldn't describe more of the story itself here.

Plant World

After a devastating attack on Earth newly appointed Veteran James McGill and Legion Varus chase after the culprits responsible. It leads them to an uncharted planet located in Earths part of the galaxy that is infested with a previously unknown hostile alien species that even the Cephalopods are afraid of; but this new species is nothing that some weed killer couldnt put down, as they are plants. This book is called Death World, and the reason for the name is explained in the content of the story but for those following The Undying Mercenaries, we know that death is a common occurrence for James McGill and Legion Varus and even a Perm death seems most unlikely following the plot. Title aside what makes this story, and all of The Undying Mercenaries books, interesting are the behind the scenes scheming and James McGill steadfast determination to do the right thing which usually disrupts those schemes and saves the day. There are several twists and turns along the story line and a really liked the last chapter setting up the next book in the series.

The narrator, Mark Boyett, did another fantastic job.

The series keeps improving

The first two books of this series were semi-painful because of McGill's righteous attitude. Now the story has progressed and operates more in a gray area, it is a sign of great character development that I wasn't expecting.

Best of the series so far.

It has been an extreme pleasure to listen to James McGill grow up with the Undying Mercenaries. This series has captured my imagination unlike any before it in the sci-fi realm. Maybe it's because the author writes like I would write and he anticipates plot twists like I would as well. In Death World the whole gang is back and better than ever. We even get to know McGill's parents a little bit. This is probably the most complete novel of the series in my opinion. After Tech World I was almost ready to declare this series had run its course. I thought maybe the author should wrap this up because in Tech World I felt like the aliens were secondary to the story with Claver. But now with death world Claver is front and center of the story wouldn't be the same without him. I love how the story ended as well. Finally James got some recognition. And they were plenty of teases about the new adventures coming in the next book Throne World. I can't wait.

B V Larson has upped the anni with this one. bringing this series in line with his best work of the swarm series.

Lacked the freshness of Ready Player One

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I wasn't thrilled with finishing this book. I went in with very high expectations, considering how much I loved Ready Player One. There were a few decent elements of this that really showed promise, but the overall story was a Last Starfighter meets Ender's Game. I didn't think it was "terrible", but there were times I thought originality was lacking. Trying to separate out my expectations is tough, so three stars is where I decided.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I get the desire to include a romance element into the story, but this aspect was way too brief to be even slightly believable - so that's probably the main area I would change. The best parts of the book had to do with the time frame between learning the origins/effects of the game, and the actual fighting. That element was the most interesting, and offered some real opportunity. The ending was just way to predictable and too similar to other esteemed cult classics, but can one suggest a different ending?

Which character as performed by Wil Wheaton was your favorite?

When Wil tries to display angst or sadness in talking, it makes me smile. So rather than a particular character (there's not a whole lost of character differences), I'll have to go with Wil trying to portray the appropriate emotion. I think he does excitement, interest, smugness, non-emotion really well. Any type of negative emotion pretty much sounds like he's 9, and his friend just broke his favorite toy (sometimes that's what you want, but sometimes not). Still enjoyable :)

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Well, I'm a nerd, and it'd be a movie about a gamer becoming a real space fighter....
