    Summary:

Bernard Cribbins stars in this classic BBC comedy set in a post-war seaside town

Featuring Norman Rossington as Big Jim, listen to these six funny and anarchic tales from those demob days when we was going to build the new Jerusalem you know, before the world turned lax and sour. Set on the building site of a seaside town in the1950s, and narrated by comedy legend Bernard Cribbins, this is classic BBC comedy at its best.

When Old Ned is finally demobbed, he heads south to the seaside to find work as a builder and joins a special construction team hoping to revive an old town that suffered during the war. This comedy series features a cast of hilarious characters including arch-rivals the Town Hall clerk, Potts, and sanitary inspector, Harold Perkins as well as builders Turps (played by Dr Who actor Sylvester McCoy) and Chick, and the aptly named local vicar, Trev the Rev. As they try (but fail) to make construction progress, they find themselves hurling insults and then onions when things get a little heated This story revels in the highs and lows of post-war Britain. Its a charming and funny listen where nostalgia meets cynicism, and the future, whilst seemingly bright and bleak in equal measure, is consistently hilarious.

Bernard Cribbinss career spanned over seven decades. He became known in the 1960s for his appearances in such comedy films as Two-Way Stretch and the Carry On series. His other screen roles include Albert Perks in The Railway Children, the barman Felix Forsythe in Alfred Hitchcocks Frenzy and the pretentious hotel guest Mr Hutchinson in the Fawlty Towers episode The Hotel Inspectors and several appearances in Dr Who.

    Summary:

    Brought to you by Penguin.

'There is nothing more terrifying than the monster that squats behind the door you dare not open...'

From the bestselling author of The Porpoise come eight mesmerising stories exploring what, ultimately, makes us human.

Mark Haddon weaves ancient fables into fresh and unexpected forms, and forges new legends to sit alongside them. The myth of the Minotaur in his labyrinth is turned into a wrenching parable of maternal love and of the monstrosities of patriarchy. The lover of a goddess, Tithonus, is gifted eternal life but without eternal youth. Actaeon, changed into a stag after glimpsing the naked Diana and torn to pieces by his hunting dogs, becomes a visceral metaphor about how humans use and misuse animals.

From genetic engineering to the eternal complications of family, Haddon showcases how we are subject to the same elemental forces that obsessed the Greeks. Whether describing Laika the Soviet space dog on her fateful orbit, or St Anthony wrestling with loneliness in the desert, his astonishing powers of observation are at their height when illuminating the thin line between human and animal.

'A marvel of a collection' Kaliane Bradley

'In sentences as precisely cut as paper sculptures, Mark Haddon fits ancient myth to the cruelties and wonders of the present' Francis Spufford

    Genres: Fiction & Literature, Poetry

    Summary:

    Brought to you by Penguin.

A searing new collection from the Forward Prize-winning American poet about the year that the worlds gaze turned to Minneapolis Smith's own home.

Written after two years of artistic silence, during which the world came to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Minneapolis became the epicentre of protest following the murder of George Floyd, Bluff is Danez Smiths powerful reckoning with their role and responsibility as a poet and with their hometown. This is a book of awakening out of violence, guilt, shame and critical pessimism to imagine how we can strive towards a new existence in a world that seems to be dissolving into desolate futures.

Smith brings a startling urgency to these poems, their questions demanding a new language, a deep self-scrutiny and virtuosic textual shapes. A series of ars poetica gives way to anti poetica and ars america to implicate poetrys collusions with unchecked capitalism. A brilliant long poem maps the history of Minneapolis-Saint Pauls vibrant Rondo neighbourhood before and after officials decided to run an interstate directly through it.

Bluff is a manifesto about artistic resilience when the places we most love those given and made are burning. In this collection, Smith turns to honesty, hope, rage and imagination to envision futures that seem possible.
