Would you listen to Downtown again? Why?

I am on my second listening of the book, it is so rich in history.

Any additional comments?

Superb writing. Poignant in parts, enlightening in many other ways. Stories of his family, and so many other key characters. Buildings and newspapers are also "characters" in Pete Hamill's book, and perhaps that's also part of why I love this book.

A frustrating read

The book was frustrating to me due to the author's disjointed style and lack of specifics. The fact that Mr. Hamill loves Manhattan is clear, but so is his past history as a writer for a newspaper tabloid. This feels like a quick newspaper article, extended ad-nauseum. There seems to be no clear structure to the book, be it by location, theme, time or date. Thoughts seem to have appeared on paper through stream of conciousness. I was further frustrated in my desire to learn about the history of Manhattan by the dearth of specific anectodes or data to support generalities in the book. The non-New Yorker can learn a little bit about the Island of Manhattan, but it takes a lot of patience.

Jumps all over the place

This is a boring review of a fantastic city. The author manages to take an interesting topic like Downtown Manhattan and make it uninteresting. The author jumps all over the place from history, architecture, geography, etc.. without bringing the whole story together. This book was a waste of time listening to basic facts about NYC most people already know!

Growing up in Indiana, basketball was almost a religion for me. So why have I never heard of Red Auerbach? Probably because he wasn’t on the HS team? What a sheltered life!!

An American's American

I found the book to be inspiring, demonstrating the true virtues of an american boy, properly raised by loving parents who then goes on to a career of service to his country. The big difference between this boy and others like him during the time is that he ends up becoming a general, responsible for thousands of people during a time of war. I think this is a good read for anyone who somehow believes that america's stability and might comes from anything other than family.

even more proud of our military

After listening to this book I'm even more in awe of the abilities and character of the men and women in our military. It's unfortunate that so many in the media are drawn to the negative like vultures to decaying flesh.

I'm appreciative of the insight the General provides as to what went on behind the scenes in discussions before the war. I am so sick of all the conspiracy theorists on both sides continuing to hang onto their theories despite any supporting evidence and many times evidence to the contrary. I'm doubly sick of those who fuel the conspiracy fires with outright lies, exaggerations, and misrepresentations.

Therefore I thank the General for his frankness and keen insight/wisdom.

Excellent! Revealing! A Must Read/Listen!

From the opening paragraphs to the final conclusions "American Soldier" presents an enlightening expose into the life of General Thomas R. Franks, and into the US Army mentality of the last third of the 20th century.

OUTSTANDING

This audio is even better than the book. Hearing the story in his own voice really brought it to life.

This is partly a history of CBS news and the world since 1950; partly an auto-biography; and partly an overview of how network news in has fit into and sometimes participated in the shaping of world and national events.

The anecdotes are priceless such as how Lyndon Johnson could afford to throw an expensive Stetson hat into the crowd at the end of every campaign appearance during his 1948 Senate campaign as he boarded his helicopter.

When we learn more about him as a person it makes you realize that those in the public eye are not just 2 dimensional characters but real people with real emotions and real lives.

In 1981 Bob realized that he would never achieve his "ultimate" job when Dan Rather took the reigns from Walter Cronkite as anchor of the CBS Evening News. He knew he would be a clear heir apparent to Dan except that he was simply too close in age to ever succeed him. In the 20 years since then he has grown to equal stature with Rather and become as much of a force in CBS news as if he HAD gotten the anchor job. He doesn't brag about this at all but there are so many other people who would have simply coasted from that point forward instead of continuing on to become everything that he is today.

His observations about the state of the world are so on target. He observed that while many felt that the U.S.A became a stronger nation after the 9/11 tragedy he ammended that to say that in his opinion we weren't a new nation but merely a nation that had again become what it once was.

He is straighforward and gives his opinions of newsmakers objectively even if they were his friends.

He is equally objective in his treatment of CBS and also of the entire fraternity of network news people.

I loved Angela's Ashes and was really looking forward to Tis. Unfortunately, I goofed and bought the abridged version in error. I definitely feel I missed out. There were sections where I asked myself how we arrived at that place until I remembered I had the "short" version. Never again!

Brilliant

having not read the book first i dont think it would have translated quite as well without the fantastic narration by the author. The simplistic style and complete honesty is very refreshing.Being Irish there are many apsects of This book that only the irish can appreciate, The hardship, the emotional backwardness and above all the comedy.

Left me questioning part of her story

I'm fascinated by this sort of thing and love to read books written by John Edward, John Holland, Sylvia Brown, etc... I thought this book would be interesting, and it was. It's also very well narrated by Hillary Huber..

However, I found myself questioning much of her story. She starts out talking about how unattractive and unpopular she was as a young girl, but then moves on to talk about how she's always in great demand, she can't keep people away. If she's at a fair with other psychics, everyone wants to see her, not anyone else. She has all these men falling in love with her. She's tiny and petite. She keeps changing her name so people can't find her, yet they still do, she just can't get away from it..

And yet.....I've never heard of her before, and I follow this sort of thing. I'm sure it has to do with my own experience with a family member who reminds me of this woman. To follow her on facebook you'd think she was a famous writer, rich, famous, a professional traveler, on and on and on, none of which are true... So I guess with that in mind, I listened to this womans story and kept thinking, she sounds so full of herself..

She talks about dark spirits a lot, how people who talk about protecting themselves with a white light make her sick... I don't know.. I guess she kind of gave me the creeps...

Maybe she's the real deal, maybe she's not.. How does one know when her name is not out there and as far as I can find, there aren't any testimonials as to how she gave anyone accurate readings.. All we have is what she says.. If in fact the readings she gave people are true, than wow.. Very intersting..

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. I am a Mom of a daughter that has DiGeorge Syndrome, one of the other names for what Quinn Bradlee also has. She suffers from ADD and now at 19 is going through some anxiety and depression. A year away at college did not turn out well. Quinn's book gave me some perspective. Mallory was 8 before she was diagnosed with DiGeorge and 13 before the diagnosis of ADD. So it is a journey.

Bought this for a teen recently diagnosed with learning disabilities. His story is uplifting but I wish the book was in audio format.

What is normal?

What is normal? Are any of us really normal? Very interesting to read from the perspective of a young man who grew up labeled learning disabled. I don't know if disabled is the proper word. Learning was difficult for him, but he is quite successful. Quinn shared his hopes, his fears, his disappointments and his achievements. It was no doubt difficult to put that all out there for the world to see.

Poignant.

Fascinating story. Well told.

not what you think

I saw Sally Quinn and her son on C-span discusing teh book and Quinn's

learning problems. He speaks so well I would never know he had LD. After reading the book you realalize the different levels of learning disability and how reading personal cues from people must be so hard.

He talks about trying to fit in socially and making small talk without sounding like a bragger or blowheart, as my Dad would say.

A great read.

Fantastic memoir

This is the second book about Sarah Hill I have read and I only hope she writes more. They are a fantastic peek into nursing and health visiting in the 60s and 70s. A must for any nurse who loves a good nursing memoir.

True Inspiration

What did you love best about Tolstoy and the Purple Chair?

I love the idea behind the book, the idea that grief can be processed through reading. What a wonderful accomplishment and inspiration. Excellent weaving of personal stories with books read.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Tolstoy and the Purple Chair?

I don't think this book had a really "memorable moment." It was all very even and memorable.

Have you listened to any of Coleen Marlos other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I've never heard Marlo before but I would definitely look for her again. Her voice is clear and lovely, perfectly modulated.

Great read

Well written.

Finding Daddy

Unfortunately after waiting such a long time to purchase this book. I was extremely disappointed. The book would have been better as a novel. The only true crime aspect was the murder of the father. Then versus going into anymore details such as what they did to search for the killer/killers,how did he really die,did he fight his killer, etc there was nothing written! I am happy that the two boys seem to be doing ok and that the wife has found other good man but why no resolution to what occurred or why it happened, in the death of the husband!

I was a dispatcher for 22 years. In that time I was privileged to take a class taught by Sheila Hanna-Wiles. This book is a must read for dispatchers. Her message is that of tragedy, strength and survival. Sheila is a remarkably strong woman. I admire her whole-heartedly. God Bless her in her career.

An inspirational book for everyone

As a 9-1-1 dispatcher for 23 years, I couldn't wait to read this book. But then I received it and had a hard time getting through it because I kept crying. This book is so personal and it's hard to imagine how a family could go through something so horrible and still manage to spend their lives giving back to others. If you're going through a difficult time, this book will help you realize that you can and will get through it. A great weekend read!

This book, although heart wrenching to read , grabs you from page one and doesn't let go until the end. I could hardly see through the tears as I read it.
