Warm Thoughts, Insight and Wisdom

I have read nothing by or about Nelson Mandela and picked up this book to learn something new. I have been greatly rewarded by listening to "Conversations with Myself". Conversations allows the reader/listenr to sit with the "elder" of the tribe and learn. It has been a enriching experience because of its content. It contains portions of diaries, notebooks, and other documents accumulated by Mr. Mandela while imprisoned for 27 years. It takes a while to get used to the disjointed narrative, but each tangent brings laughter, tears, understanding and wisdom. This is an amazing man. It takes a few minutes to become accustomed to the rythm and accent of John Kani, but his reading becomes a welcome addition to the prose. Stay with him a few minutes. If I may say, the book has been a blessing.

Barely understandable, strangely structured

I am just over a hour into the book. I have not figured out a structure to the book yet. There seem to be all kinds of random quotes from other books and I really have no idea how this is supposed to be structured. I have friends that have loved the print version, but stay away from the audio version. The accent of the narrator makes him very difficult to understand, but more important is the structure of the book. Based on some reviews from Amazon it is mostly segments from biographical writings and interviews but in audio format there is not enough structure to give definition to know what is going on

Great companion to "Long Walk to Freedom"

Favorite quote was a saint is sinner who keeps on trying. This is a great companion to the book Long Walk to Freedom in that you get insight into the mind of Mandela through his private conversations, letters to loved ones, and other writings through his years of imprisonment and his final freedom.

Anyone who is interested in this woman writer and her attempts at being published in the mid 1800's would like reading these letters.

Beautifully read

These letters are beautifully read by the narrator, and as you would expect from Charlotte Bronte, the letters exquisite. However it is the recording that lets this down. At one point words are edited out - I say words, it could be a sentence or a whole passage. At another part there is a clicking that makes it hard to concentrate on the words.

This is a pity as it is beautiful otherwise.

Many years ago, I sat under Steve Sjogren's teaching in the Cincinnati. I was there when he developed the principles in Conspiracy of Kindness. I saw how people a church and a community were changed over time. This book is a great guide for learning how to reach out and serve people. I highly recommend it along with many other books Steve Sjogren has written.

Of particular interest might be his "The Day I Died." I also witnesses nearly losing a friend and a pastor to watching his miraculouis recovery to once again be to lead and teach the sheep entrusted to him.

these things change lives...

For the one review that says it's unrealistic...it's puzzling. Pure and simple this *WORKS*. I got this book shortly after joining the Cincy Vineyard. There are few things that truly change lives but things in this book work. It's not a book about mega-churches, for the strange thing is even though there's multiple services and thousands of people it gives church HOME a whole new meaning. The advantage to big churches...more people to do more things to give more things away!

There are things that aren't captured in the book that I feel worth mentioning here. I've been on many of the servant evangalism things as described in this book - and the phrase God works in mysterious ways is so often coined and cast aside. I've seen people come for help, and salvation, from receiving a can of Coke at an intersection 18 months earlier. I've seen people in tears from receiving a bag of groceries; I've seen first hand this isn't just a book of "look how well our church is doing" - it's a book that is meant to be a workbook - it's meant to DO things. People are astounded when you wash their windshield for free...when you go into the small businesses and give little treats or wash their bathrooms there's the head tilt and "what kind of church ARE you?!" I mean who volunteers to do bathrooms (and actually has fun doing it)?! Who thought wrapping Christmas gifts or receiving lightbulbs would change someone's life? Packaging school supplies to give away to low income families is humbling to realise there are people even in affluent America that are hard working and struggle to get paper, pencils and a notebook for their kids for school. Giving bottled water to visitors at festivals or a newspaper is consumable things that don't last the day - but the message it gives can stick with the recipient much longer. These things work - it's unexpected. There were times people tried to give something back - which defeated the gift of doing something for nothing...so the gift of a pack of sodas became another gift giving to people as their car filled with gas. The gift of time and small acts is something that is so often lost today.

I highly recommend this book and, having been blessed with the opportunity to attend the Cincy Vineyard (as well as others) it is something that has a ripple effect - the giving is infectious. THAT makes changes.

Religious rubbish

What would have made The Big Picture better?

If there was a warning that this book is filled with religious content. Disclaimer, I couldn't get very far through it before I was turned off, and am a fan of Sam Harris' atheist / philosophical / spiritual ideas - just to give an idea on my mini review. I also don't live in America, as I'd likely have known enough about this chap to never entertain buying this book in the first place.

The narrator does a good job, but the content of the book is probably a bit too preachy for atheists. I turned off not long after hearing him use the old "god works in mysterious ways" rubbish after his patients die, followed shortly by him praying that he'd have a fun time on safari. Of course, the twins die, he sees some pretty animals, and all is well in the world. Hard to stomach life advice from someone who operates like that.

Good Book! Not the best narrator, but great story

Dr. Carson's life story is very interesting to me. I saw the Lifetime movie, Gifted Hands, and have been a fan since then. I've also seen him offering medical insight and political commentary on several news channels. I purchased 2 of his books. This book was good - very inspirational. Dr. Carson makes no apology for being a man of faith - I find that refreshing.

I did not however enjoy the narrator. This would have been so much better if Dr. Carson would have read it, but it was still a good story. I recommend it to anyone interested in a rags to riches story of how to overcome difficult circumstances.

The shortcomings of justice

I couldn't let go of this audiobook after having listened to it in a single session: non fiction that reads like a suspense novel. But apart from its ``entertainment'' value, the author makes an extremely compelling case against the death penalty as it is implemented today. Without ever boring the reader, he explains how a dangerous combination of poorly prepared / payed attorneys combined with more and more arbitrary appeal rules restrictions end up with the execution of the guilty, but also the innocent, the mentally insane etc. The real cases he reports bring the reader to tears of sadness and frustration. This should be a must read esp for everyone who supports the death penalty without really knowing how the system works!

Great story. Tragic reality

David Dow's memoir is not just about the death penalty; it is about a father, a husband, and a lawyer. If this were fiction, it would be a great story. But it's fact, making it all the more compelling. Of course, the book also teaches us an awfully lot about criminal justice in Texas, and what you learn is not pretty.

The narration by the author is excellent.

Interview at end is great

This is a fascinating and eye-opening inside look into the business of execution, as well as into the life and practice of a lawyer defending death row inmates. This is some intense lawyering, let me tell you! And the details about the ins and outs of this practice - the races for appeals, the maddening frustrations, the heart-breaking losses - "justice is blind" (mostly to its own injustice) - were excellently told.

I can't put it down!

I've purchased this kindle edition today only hours ago and have not been able to put it down. Her words go right to my heart and I journal the thoughts it brings up. This is the 2nd book I've read this year and it's wonderful.

Found Art

Amazingly Inspirational book. The author vividly tells her story, combining the utmost of humility and wisdom. Made me reflect deeper into my own soul and strive for a deeper trust in GOD, the only ONE who can turn depravity into beauty.

a life changing book! a must read!

I actually happened upon this book accidentally but it has blessed me so so much. I think this has to be one of the books that have impacted me most as a person. Leeana's journey helped me process through my three years of being a missionary in Asia. God used it to help me look back at some of the painful things that did occur to find "art" or gems that He hid there. Though unlike the author it wasn't during my time overseas where I had a chance to draw close to the Lord, her account of her time in Bahrain took me back to where it hurt and let light in. Her words helped me slow down and let God whisper His unchanging love and goodness toward me once again. Thank you Leeana for this book. It's truly changed my life and I'm recommending it to all my friends!

Boldly written and read

A story for humans. We aren't perfect, we do have faults, well, at least most of us.Chick lit isn't my usual read, but this one was a great choice. The author's reading was great, her voice is not that of a professional reader, but that just makes it more real.

Wow

I loved this book. It's VERY different from Julie & Julia, a much darker and real book. Julie shares the realities of a very difficult time in her marriage and not many people would be so honest and open about their own shortcomings. I hope Julie Powell will continue to write. She has a real gift for laughing at herself, even in the worst of times.

kind of sad

Cleaving isn't like the first book. It's mostly about the author's obsessive love affair. She isn't so likeable any more. She seems to wallow in cheating on her husband. Yes, the book is written well but a lot of yuck. Yuck being her obsession with butchering meat and her obsession with cheating on her hubby. Really, this was kind of a downer. Not what I look for in the books I read.

Not worth it!

The only thing that redeemed this book was that it was read by the author. After reading Julie and Julia I knew the author was a little crass but this book should never have been published. I feel terrible for her husband and even for her lover that their lives have been laid bare before the world. Despite lots of statements to the contrary I don't think the author knows who she is yet and it is sad to read of someone who is so adrift. The story is not worth your credits!

I am a meat safety inspector. I got hopeful for a book written by a female about the art of butchery....

but, oh dear lord, some biological and regulatory things that were just Wrong!

The more I listened the more it drove me crazy, I give zero cares about her marriage, and apparently she does too...

but if you are going to this book to learn about agriculture and/or butchery.. reverse and run, this book is Not worth it for that.
