Those feet were made for walking
If this is your introduction to British history it will be one of the best ways to enjoy a taster of glimpses into the past; this is history made fun. Informative with comments on the present as well as past events.
Well written and well read. A must for anyone interested in the past and present and walking through the british countryside.
I wasn't sure..........
I had made a good choice when I purchased this book. I hadn't made a good choice - I'd made an excellent choice.
This book is informative, entertaining and moving - particularly the potato famine section.
In what other book do you get possible ghosts, royal football and a prince dressed as a woman?
It's well read - and once I'd finished the book it made me want to visit the places covered.
I've bought a fair few books from Audible - this is the first one to get five stars.
I just wish there was a sequel!

Enjoyable and funny
Contrary to other reviews of this audio book I liked the swearing within it as I could relate to it in the situations the author got into (particularly with the so-called 'driving instructor).
I found this book to be funny but also very informative. It was refreshing to see an author acknowledge where his own personal information was lacking and was keen to praise those characters he met along the way that enlightened him. It was also at times appropriately poignant, particularly at the end.
I would strongly recommend this to anyone who loves British history combined with a love of long walks!
Accessible History!
This is a great book, really easy to listen to. The narrator is very clear and expressive, making the book a joy to listen to.
With regards to content, the tales are told with just the right mix of observational anecdotes of the walk, along with the history and purpose of the epxeditions that we hope for. Great writing brings what can often be a same-old same-old history lesson back to life. (listen particularly to teh retelling of William the Conqueror and the defining battle at Hastings)
The only downside to this book is perhaps the long chapters can be daunting to embark upon, and there are a few uses of foul language (perhaps one or two per hour), which don't add all that much at all to the story telling
Overall though, a great listen; well worth the money!
Thoughtful
An interesting view of our precious island and the history that makes it. He gives an honest, amusing and little known facts about the areas he walks to and around, bringing them alive in this world of fast travel.
I suggest that when he chose a interesting person to follow. He would take the journey all the way; for instance Queen Mary. There is so much more to the Lady than he told us and some of the people who had close contact with her - what of there lives.
History comes alive with his observations. these journeys made me want to follow his routes.
I am just waiting for the next edition.
