This fast paced commentary of how English developed over many centuries and became the international language we know and use today also gives the listener insight into the weirdly inconsistent spelling rules in our language, and how we have come to have such a broad vocabulary with its many shades of expression.

Why didn't I enjoy it?

Fascinating subject, full of facts - so why didn't I enjoy it? I nearly didn't make it past the first chapter. Perhaps it's better read than listened to? The endless lists, for example. And too many examples per fact (yes we've got the point, thank you). Or maybe this book is of more interest to a non-native speaker and lover of English Language. I really don't know, but this is the most disappointing talking book for me so far.

English in the making

If you enjoy the etymology of words then you will enjoy this book which gives the whens and why words came or were absorbed into 'English'. A product of its history, this book is a fasinating insight on the impact of invaders and settlers like the Romans, Vikings and especially the Normans and of England's neighbours like the Dutch, French and Germans.

Perhaps the only criticism is that Melvyn Bragg reads slightly too fast. Does he always talk as though he is pressed for time on a radio programme? Still it is an interesting tale well-told and worth the effort of listening closely.

Great tales indeed

I was recommended this book by a friend who has bought all three books, which have been abridged into one audiobook. He thought the book would be perfect to listen to while driving as it consisted of many short stories.

He is right, the book is great to listen to, particularly while driving. The book is a collection of historical tales, ordered chronologically from the earliest known evidence of mankind in England to the present day. It isn't a comprehensive history (how could it be?) and cherry picks its way through the most interesting bits (in the author's opinion). The book is full of little bits of trivia.

It is well narrated by the author too. As with many abridged versions though, I would prefer to listen to the whole lot, hence the 4 stars. Perhaps we'll get lucky one day...

Yawn!

I was really looking forward to this book but was really disappointed. I've always had an interest in history and was probably expecting to hear something new however, it was just a basic 'schoolboy' account of the history of this country which I found totally uninspiring.

I would say that it would be fine for those who had very little knowledge of England's history as it did manage to convey the basics quickly and without too much unnecessary fine detail.

Enlightening

Have read lots about these events, but having real diaries as the basis of this book made everything come alive. Didn't realise how 'far gone' Britain was near the start of the war in the eyes of practically all other nations.

Excellent book on understanding what Britian went through

Very well written, very exciting. I could not put this book down. I did not know to much about World War II except what the US did. This tells me a whole new story that I never knew.

Finest Hour of Sleep

This book opens with snippets of pre-battle "experiences" of various men. It is so boring I can't force myself to get through the first chapter. A great disappointment.

Tim Clayton is a former research fellow at Worcester College, Oxford and the author of numerous articles and books, also a writer and producer of television documentaries. Phil Craig is a classmate at St. Catherineâs College, Cambridge and a producer of television documentaries. They collaborated on the âFinest Hourâ television series. This 1999 book has 349 pages for its Contents, eighteen chapters, Acknowledgments, Bibliography, Notes on Source, and Index. Eight pages of photographs each follow pages 62, 126, 222, and 286. The people whose stories are in this book were students or at work when the Munich Agreement was signed in 1938 (âPrologueâ). Weapons production accelerated in Britain. In September 1939 the British Expedition Force and some squadrons of the RAF were sent to France. The Royal Navy blockaded Germany and created a convoy system for shipping. The chapters cover dates from May 10 to November 1940.

England celebrates Battle of Britain Day each September 15, when Germany reduced its efforts in bombing England by day. There is no outline for the events in this book. Chapter 1 describes the start of the German invasion of France and Belgium. Churchill became Premier. The German Blitzkrieg pushed forward through Belgium and around the Maginot Line. Forced back, the British evacuated over 335,000 soldiers from Dunkirk (Chapter 5). But armaments were lost (p.136). Fighters were sent into combat over France (p.139). On June 10 Italy declared war on Britain and France, they had a large and modern Navy in the Mediterranean. The French government retreated to Tours, the Germans marched into Paris (p.147). The Pétain government asked for an armistice, British troops were withdrawn from France (p.158).

Britain asked America for destroyers (p.200). The Luftwaffe began attacks to destroy the RAF (p.203). The Germans bombed the docks of London and caused huge fires (p.247). People were evacuated from their homes. Many took refuge in the Underground system (p.252).

I've read a number of non-fiction narratives. This one is very average. The subject matter is difficult to get very excited about. It may be the abridgement that has detracted from the work of the author. Many times it is the side stories and facts that I find most fascinating. Those stories are not in this recording. It is like the difference between a newspaper account and being at an event. I picked up a copy of the book at work one day and started reading through it. All of the little stories I found enlightening were left out of the abridged version. This book does a good job of dealing with the primary storyline involving the measurement of the earth to determine the size of the meter. Beyond that, I found the narrative not very interesting.

Top notch history of science. Horrible fake accent

This is pretty high level history of science, linking significant changes in scientific practice with other historical changes. Alder argues that the transition to standardized metric measures in revolutionary France was largely driven by enlightenment and revolutionary politics. The book is well written and argued. It's accessible but based on the author's academic scholarship.

The audiobook reader would have been excellent if only he had not assumed a totally ridiculous fake French accent for quotations. The accent is a distracting joke. Think of Inspector Clouseau or John Cleese in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Funny in those movies, yes, but only irritating here. Terrible decision that harmed an otherwise fine reading performance.

There's an interesting story here, but...

...this ain't it. Silly accents by the narrator (!!!) not withstanding, the story of science at the time of the French revolution, and the study and later transformation of the meter is really cool. But instead of trying to let that stand on its own, the author looks to draw a much greater sort of story that tries to wrestle with the meaning of error. It doesn't work. It doesn't work because the two stories are sort of footnotes to one another, and an exploration of the idea the book purports to would take much more than a disinterested chapter at the end.

If you can read this, buy this programme!

English. Many of us who speak and read it take it for granted. But what a marvellous history it possesses.

Bill Bryson has a talent for taking complicated academic subjects and turning them into compelling stories; full of quirky anecdotes, unusual facts and memorable characters. This six-part radio series is a great example of that talent.

The story of English is fascinating. And more fascinating being told by Bryson and his collection of experts.

Very entertaining and informative!

Anything Bill Bryson has done recently gets my vote - but his audio books are great, as long as they are read by himself (the other narrator who does his work rather irritates me). Journeys in English is so supremely interesting and yet an easy listen too, that I have listened to it several times. A feat only beaten by his other two fabulous books (At Home and A Brief History) which I have also listened to multiple times.

All I can hope is that he releases some more audio books before I learn his current ones verbatim.

A quick few lessons in our other tongue

With this book - following as it does the BBC Radio 4 programme or is that was the programmes gives us a taster as to the origins of our language - said by many to be the or one of the most colourful and diverse languages on the planet.

There's a problem though.. thus only 4 stars not the 5 it should have had ? Mr Bryson himself is a great author - I know I have all of his other works... BUT in my opinion he should leave the reading of them to others with greater depth of tone and rhythmical speech. William Roberts for example has read most of the other works available here and he is great in giving Mr Bryson?s books voice.
