Length: 9 hrs and 1 min
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-18-09
    Publisher: Phoenix Books
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 100 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
For a half-century, the world's most influential figures have been telling their story to Larry King. Now the man in suspenders shares his inspiring story, from his humble roots in Depression-era Brooklyn to the heights of celebrity as host of CNN's Larry King Live.
Before he befriended presidents and iconic entertainers, Larry grew up on the streets of Brooklyn, where he was known to friends as "Zeke the Greek the Mouthpiece" because he never stopped talking. Larry delves deeply into his extraordinary personal odyssey, beginning with the loss of his father at age nine. He has lost jobs, had a three-pack-a-day smoking habit, been down to his last $2 when he won an $8,000 trifecta at the racetrack, had a heart attack and quintuple bypass surgery, quit smoking, and now, at the age of 75, has recently been thrown out of a Little League game for arguing a call in defense of his nine-year-old son.
Filled with delightfully evocative personal anecdotes and behind-the-scenes observations on some of our most important world figures, My Remarkable Journey will be devoured by Larry King's millions of fans worldwide.

    Amazingly Awesome
What a story! more folks should write stories like this, biographies of 'neighborhood' friends. Recent generations don't have the same kind of 'friends' or neighborhoods...and our recollections are clouded by 'reality' tv and electronic enhancements!
Larry's Remarkable Journey a remarkable listen
Larry King's latest book is chock full of the fascinating and personal anecdotes, adventures, and stories that accompany him from childhood to the present day and include a varied cast of family, schoolfriends, colleagues and celebrities along his journey. Alternatingly hilarious and heart-wrenching, there is plenty of food for thought here. Yet what puts this audiobook in a class of its own is King's delivery: It never once sounds like it is read, but is instead told in a natural, spontaneous voice that makes the listener feel he or she has just pulled up a chair for a long chat with an old friend. The icing on this cake is the interspersed commentary from family and friends. King also answers frequently-asked questions from his viewers. All of these features make this one of the most entertaining and enjoyable audiobooks I have ever listened to.
    Treasure
Larrys a treasure. And wow! what a story teller. This is the kind of book that'll leave u thinking and laughing. And the best part is you can pick it up whenever. No need to be fully invested..
    Witty and captivating
Great book. What's better than having Larry King himself read you a book that he wrote!! The lifelong lessons, humor, and humbleness in this book are really priceless. You may agree or disagree with Mr. King on so many issues and opinions in the book, but you will always appreciate his point of view and honesty.
The funniest audiobook I've ever heard
Not only did the audio provide some precious insights about life, it turned out to be extremely funny! I have more than a hundred audio books in my library, this one is definitely the best! A must for anybody who thinks and talks!

  • Paul Newman Audiobook by Shawn Levy

    Title: Paul Newman
    Subtitle: A Life
    Author: Shawn Levy
    Narrator: Marc Cashman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 16 hrs and 41 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-05-09
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 51 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
But Newman was also an oddity in Hollywood: the rare box-office titan who cared about the craft of acting, the sexy leading man known for the staying power of his marriage, and the humble celebrity who made philanthropy his calling card long before it was cool.
In Paul Newman: A Life, film critic and pop culture historian Shawn Levy gives readers the ultimate behind-the-scenes examination of the actor's life, from his merry pranks on the set to his lasting romance with Joanne Woodward to the devastating impact of his son's death from a drug overdose. This definitive biography is a fascinating portrait of an extraordinarily gifted man who gave back as much as he got out of life and just happened to be one of the most celebrated movie stars of the 20th century.
    Members Reviews:
Charismatic subject makes for great reading
What a man! I listen to a lot of biographies and loved hearing the details of Paul Newman's life and learning what a nonconformist he was. It was so captivating that I think I listened to the whole thing in 2 days. Well written and read--the icing on the cake.
Not Enough About the Movies Newman Was In
Would you try another book from Shawn Levy and/or Marc Cashman?
    Perhaps.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
For 17 hrs worth of listening I would have expected more treatment of the movies that Newman appeared in. In some instances there is barely a paragraph or two discussing such movies as The Long Hot Summer, or Cool Hand Luke. Very disappointing for a movie buff when hardly any of the material focuses on Newman's appearance and performance in these seminal pictures.
Sure, there's plenty of time spent on his personal life, association with The Actor's Studio, his relationship with Joan, etc. But what about his movies! Perhaps I'm spoiled by biographies like the recent John Wayne by Scott Eyman which not only details Wayne's personal life but spent a great deal of time on the pictures that Wayne made, his relationship with the various directors he worked with, and the movie making process. The Wayne biography would spend upwards of 20, 30, or 40 mins on one picture alone. In the Newman bio we're lucky to get 5-10 mins discussion an important film like The Hustler.
Why no in-depth look at the pictures Newman appeared in? Surely more time could have been spent researching & interviewing actors, production staff, directors, and studio execs.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Marc Cashman?
Depends. Not my favorite voice for an audiobook.
Do you think Paul Newman needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Not sure what it would be except for a more in-depth rewrite to include details regarding the films that Newman appeared in.
    A little dry
I'm a big Paul Newman fan but I found this book to be a little on the dry side. Reciting movie plots by rote can get tiresome after a while but I did learn a little about the man. Not a bad read but a little disappointing.
    Painfully boring
There is no way PN's life could have been boring and clinical. It's a shameful accomplishment that the author made it so in this book.
Don't waste your time, money, or Audible point.
    Can I get a refund?
What's not to love about Paul Newman
Would you listen to Paul Newman again? Why?
    Maybe.

    Title: Empire
Subtitle: The Life, Legend, and Madness of Howard Hughes
Author: Donald L. Barlett, James B. Steele
    Narrator: Christopher Hurt
    Format: Abridged
Length: 8 hrs and 46 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-01-09
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 25 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Hughes had always been different. Certainly his riches set him apart, but he was also tough. Orphaned and a millionaire at 18, Hughes repudiated his relatives, seized control of the Hughes Tool Company, the linchpin of his fortune, and went on to become a flamboyant movie producer, holder of many world aviation records, principal owner of Trans World Airlines, a critically important defense contractor, Hollywood's most pursued and elusive bachelor, and partner of the United States government.
This is an epic biography of an epic figure who bestrode the world like a colossus yet could not master himself.
    Critic Reviews:

Empire is easily the best...." (

    Members Reviews:
    Oddly Cut
As much as I enjoy biographies this abridged version wasn't put together very well. The narrator was marginal and judging from what was spliced together from the full book, I would recommend the unabridged version.
    Great story / bad narration
I'm not sure if it was just my download but it seemed like there were two narrators on this book (and I'm not referring to when he's talking as Hughes or others. ). Just something weird about the narration
    Fascinating
Only wish the ending detailed out what happened to his estate and his companies.
Wikipedia states his estate is worth over $10 billion...unclear as to how this happened
    Excellent. But ...
Interesting, fluid account of the man they called HRH. Good reading too.
    But.
There is a peculiar and unfortunate production technique used in the audobook. The reader speaks with two different voices, as if two people are reading the book in turn. Presumably this is meant to add emphasis or something. But its just annoying.
Nonetheless its still worth listening to.

    For Sports Fans Only
Not what I expected from a book purportedly about life with DID, this memoir provided tons of detail about how to become a great athlete after being an overweight child who suffered the taunts and physical attacks of schoolmates in the rural South. Disappointingly sparing were any details about Mr. Walker's actual experiences with dissociation and the consequences of it. Perhaps this was the author's Intent -- to write a book about devotion to physical fitness and Christianity -- but it leaves readers almost clueless about what it is like to live as a person diagnosed with the largely misunderstood condition of dissociative identity disorder. On the other hand, if you're looking/listening for a motivational story with this author's biases, you will likely enjoy the book.
    I appreciate this book
I found this book very insightful and inspirational. Thank you for sharing your story. It is wonderful to see your perspective as one who has had to deal with DID from the perspective of a fellow human being and Christian. I gained valuable insights I hope will help me overcome my own personal challenges in my life. Perhaps more valuable, I will hopefully see and treat people who suffer from the myriad of mental and other illnesses with greater love, patience, and compassion.

The result is the behind-the-headlines story of the Astor empire's unraveling, filled with never-before-reported scenes. This powerful, poignant saga takes the listener inside the gilded gates of an American dynasty to tell of three generations' worth of longing and missed opportunities. Even in this territory of privilege, no riches can put things right once they've been torn asunder. Here is an American epic of the bonds of money, morality, and social position.

    Disappointing
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
My time would have been better spent reading the funny paper.
If youve listened to books by Meryl Gordon before, how does this one compare?
    N/A
Would you listen to another book narrated by Lorna Raver?
    Yes.
Do you think Mrs. Astor Regrets needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Not by this author. I can't waiting to get to the meat. It never happened. This is a surface only book.
    Any additional comments?
    Gravely disappointing.
THE BEST BOOK I HAVE READ IN YEARS
Where does Mrs. Astor Regrets rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Top of the list. I even enjoyed it the 4th and 5th times I listened and shall listen again as well
What was one of the most memorable moments of Mrs. Astor Regrets?
When the gold digger Charlene otherwise known as Miss Piggy is exposed to the world for who she is and what she did...too bad they couldn't give her the jail time she so RICHLY deserves. She is GREED personified and now the world will know the facts.
What about Lorna Ravers performance did you like?
Her voice and talent are sublime.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yes... when they pronounce her son and Miss Piggy GUILTY
    Any additional comments?
I fell in love with Mrs Astor and her staff and I ADORE Mrs De La Renta who is a true friend and a class act.
Poignant recollection of a life lived
This book was both fascinating and heartbreaking. It is the story of a family who had so much, wealth, prestige, privilege. Yet in spite of it all the things that really matter in life were squandered. It gives you a look inside the life of one of New Yorks greatest Philanthropists. How now woman's desire to do so much good for others, led to bitterness, and estrangement within her own family. You will not easily put this book down once you begin reading.
    Rich People Voyeurism . . .
It's a powerful genre, wanting to read gossip about how the rich are, deep down inside, just like us. I listened to this book thinking "good, I get to see rich people having trouble due to having so much money" but ended it feeling sad and sorry for all of them. None of them deserved what they got. I guess it's more of a curse than a gift.
    Ended too soon
It was an interesting and sad story of a family with little love. Wished the end would have included the trial and how the will was distributed

Length: 3 hrs and 2 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-14-08
    Publisher: Orion Publishing Group Limited
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 152 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Moving quickly on from the devastating crash that nearly killed him he ranges widely over his life and times: a visit to Glastonbury with James May reminds of him of his early years of playing in a band and how and why he never quite made it as a rock star; the stunts and other perils that come his way like the TopGear North Pole race (why is it Richard who is out in the howling elements in a dog sled whilst the others are in the heated cab of an all-terrain vehicle?), Africa where he falls in love with and repatriates a stray car, and the US (once to be chased by Rednecks in middle America, the other in pursuit of his mad hero Evel Knievel); his passion for cars, what he owns and why and although he loves his wife why it is a toss-up whether he says hello to the wife or the cars first. Balancing home and family with a crazy, peripatetic working life (or not, sometimes), the hamster is well and truly back on the wheel.
    Members Reviews:
    Chapter on Evel is missing.
I don't know if the chapter on Evel was never recorded or wasn't included on Audible, but it's really disappointing to know that I'm not getting the whole book.
I only wish it had been unabridged!
Where does As You Do rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
As You Do ranks high on the list. Richard Hammond's self effacing sense of humor makes for a very fun listen
What was one of the most memorable moments of As You Do?
His description of meeting the sled dogs in the arctic race was epic! Not to put in any spoilers, but he literally gets dragged across the ice and through pile after pile of "doggie deposits" while the dogs essentially ignore him (they are very big and powerful) in their quest to reach their owner, whom they really care about.
What about the narrators performance did you like?
This was narrated by the author, who does a fantastic job with the pacing and tone.
    Any additional comments?
It's short, and full of laughs, I heartily recommend it.
A must for Top Gear fans
The sequel to "On The Edge", his first book after his horrific crash in the rocket car. Hammond's humour is one that we can all relate to. Even after becoming a huge celebrity and a successful family man and surviving a bone-chilling crash that should have killed him, he still writes with the innocence of a cheaky 10-year-old, but with the the intelligence of a graduate. His rants with his co-hosts are always hilarious and the tales of top-fueled craziness never left me wanting. Very well written, very well read. Great book. It was great to get another insight into his amazing life. And I feel like I know him like a friend after reading it. Definitely worth listening to.
    Must-listen for Top Gear fans
Hammond relates some of what happened during the production of TG segments like Botswana and the magnetic north pole. Very entertaining, but I just wish it was longer.
    Top Gear in words
If you could sum up As You Do in three words, what would they be?
    Audio Top Gear
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Author... It's Richard!
What about uncrediteds performance did you like?
    All of it
    Any additional comments?
This is basically just Richard giving us a more detailed explaination of a few of the shows episodes and recounting how he managed and handled it all.

    Members Reviews:
If you like Dawn French - You will love this book!
I love to read or listen to auto-biographies and biographies but usually prefer auto-bios (unless historical figures, of course, and I still like the biographer to use as much of the figures own writing, etc.). As a fan of Dawn French, British humor, Absoluteley Fabulous and the Vicar of Dibley - I suspected I would like this book but really knew nothing about Dawn French other than the TV shows (how she started, her family, her association with Jennifer Saunders, etc.) I learned all about those things and more. What made this particularly interesting is the format she wrote this in. Each chapter/section was a letter to various people - her deceased dad, her husband, daughter, friends, etc. She creatively used the letter to explain her relationships, thoughts, advice - you name it. It was so interesting - funny and sad in parts - touching and honest throughout. The only negative part (and it isn't really negative) is that she sometimes refers to stars, star scandals and other matters that are apparently well known in England (but not in USA - Well, she does live in England and this was undoubtedly primarily targeted for the Britich reader.) All that said, great listen. While she did not read it, the person who did read it sounded just like her. If you didn't know it was her - you'd swear it was. Just listening to her letter to her father in relation to his death (by suicide) is a lesson on forgiveness and love and worth the price of admission. Thanks for bringing this to us Audible.
    Classic Dawn...
What a laugh out loud book. Beautifully narrated, at times I thought it was Dawn herself reading to me. I could feel her pain, disappointment and joy. I really recommend this book to anyone that's a Dawn French fan. Thank you for a lovely book, hope to read more of your books....
    Thank you, Dawn!!!
Dawn French covers many, many topics as she writes letters to friends, family and the dearly departed. Her correspondence to them creates a memoir that is vivid, funny and insightful. Wish she would have narrated, but understood why she didn't. Liza does a good job with it though.

    Not Just Weight Loss
This isn't a weight loss book, although she does discuss her weight issues throughout. It's much more than that. She discusses her entire life, pre-fame, One Day at A Time, marriage to Eddie Van Halen, motherhood, with a great deal of honesty. If you came of age watching One Day at a Time, you'll enjoy this book very much. Valerie herself narrates, and does a great job. It's like listening to a good friend talk about her life.
If you're looking for just another "how to" weight loss book, this is not for you.
    Entertaining
Delightful look at Valerie's life and struggles with weight. I think much of what makes an audible book good is the readers tone and connection with the listener. Valerie did an awesome job narrating, it wasn't like she was reading, it was more like you were sitting with her chatting about her life.
    Inviting
this is book you can cuddle up with and feel understood. Valerie Bertinelli is honest and understanding while giving you a few incites she has learned along the way through her weight loss journey.
    Engaging
Losing It, mainly deals with Valerie's struggles with her weight and negative self perceptions.
There are other personal aspects such as her relationship with Eddie and her sitcom life.
Valerie gives a great read of her book; really drawing you in with a warm and friendly voice. By the time I had finished listening, I felt as though I was hearing a friend speak about her life.
It goes by quick and even quicker if you're drawn in, like I was.
The only fault I have is that this is abridged. So, I'll be borrowing the book from the library to see what I missed.
    Losing It
Plain and simple, if you are curious about Valarie Burtinelli's life, you will enjoy listening to her account. The book is not literary but an easy listen where you can kick back and relax. For those who enjoy autobiographies of the rich and famous, not only do you hear about her life first hand, but gain insight into the mindset of someone who struggles with body weight and how it overtakes your thoughts, in essence your entire being. Her struggle with codependency, her weight, and her own identify are presented very graceously and honestly.
