    Title: Sweetness
Subtitle: The Enigmatic Life of Walter Payton
    Author: Jeff Pearlman
    Narrator: Malcolm Hillgartner
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 18 hrs and 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-17-11
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 98 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
At five feet 10 inches tall, running back Walter Payton was not the largest player in the NFL, but he developed a larger-than-life reputation for his strength, speed, and grit. Nicknamed Sweetness during his college football days, he became the NFLs all-time leader in rushing and all-purpose yards, capturing the hearts of fans in his adopted Chicago.
Drawing from interviews with more than seven hundred sources, acclaimed sportswriter Jeff Pearlman has crafted the first definitive biography of Payton. Sweetness at last brings fans a detailed, scrupulously researched, all-encompassing account of the legends rise to greatness. From Paytons childhood in segregated Mississippi, where he ended a racial war by becoming the star of his integrated high schools football team, to his college years and his thirteen-year NFL career, Sweetness brims with stories of all-American heroism and covers Paytons life on and off the field. Set against the backdrop of the tragic illness that cut his life short at just 45 years of age, this is a stirring tribute to a singular icon and the lasting legacy he made.
    Critic Reviews:
"Jeff Pearlman does the work of first-rate biography in his addictively readable Sweetness. He presents Walter Payton in all of his flaws and contradictions yet leaves you in the end with a much deeper appreciation of an uncommon man." (David Maraniss, Pulitzer Prizewinning author)

    A Really Sweet Guy
I met Walter once. He lived next to my mother in Arlington Heights for 8 years before he moved to his mansion. My mother baby sat for Walter & Connie's kids occasionally. He was really a sweet guy, my mother loved Walter & Connie & the kids. The book was a bit of a downer as it detailed his many flaws, particularly infidelity. Still, I loved learning about his life story. He was a real "stud". Walter died of liver cancer at age 46, probably from taking so many unregulated pain medications during and after his his playing days. Football is a beautiful sport, but tough on the body. Excellent research, really good writing.
    Great
A candid account of one of my favorite people. He is more complex than I imagined. Great narration.
    Excellent and very complete!
I looked forward to getting back to "the book" each time I had a drive to make. It is a long book but held my interest throughout. If you are interested in the 1985 Bears this book adds a lot to the story at a deeper level about a key player.
Honest Accounting Of A Fascinating Life
Started listening to this book after getting a tip from A Football Life episode on Walter Payton. Thought that there had to be more to the man than the sparkly clean image put forth by the media and the family and this book does a very thorough job of giving the details of a rather complex human being without being a tabloid.
The narrator did an excellent job with the pace and the different sounding voices. It was an audiobook that was hard to turn off. It covers Walter's life from Mississippi to Illinois and pretty much everything in between.

  • Here Comes Trouble Audiobook by Michael Moore

    Title: Here Comes Trouble
    Subtitle: Stories from My Life
    Author: Michael Moore
    Narrator: Michael Moore
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-13-11
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 407 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
This book is Moore's most personal to date - and will be irresistible to fans and foes alike. A sort of anti-memoir, Moore breaks the autobiographical mode while he hilariously presents 20 far-ranging, irreverant vignettes from his own life.
Moore is his own meta-Forrest Gump, as one moment he's an 11-year old boy stuck on a Senate elevator with Bobby Kennedy and the next moment he's inside the Bitburg cemetery with a dazed and confused Ronald Reagan.
Changing planes in Vienna, he escapes death at the hands of the terrorist Abu Nidal (others weren't so lucky). In search for a bag of Ruffles potato chips one day, he ends up eliminating racial discrimination at private clubs all across America. He founded his first underground newspaper in fourth grade.
He refused to be on the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite at 16 ("There's not enough Clearasil in the world for that to happen"). And he became the youngest elected official in the country at age 18 by enlisting an "army of local stoners" who had no idea what they were doing as his campaign staff.
And none of that even comes close to the night the friendly priest at the seminary decided to show him how to perform his own exorcism.
All of this is the stuff that makes for great fiction - but every one of these stories is true and from the life of one Michael Moore, a son of Flint, Michigan, who became an iconic voice for American progressives everywhere. But before that Michael Moore became the Oscar-winning filmmaker and all-round rabble rouser and thorn-in-the-side of corporate and right-wing America, there was the guy who had an uncanny knack of just showing up where history was being made. Like the night he was passing through Berlin and some crazies started chiseling on a very large wall. The next thing he knew he was on top of that wall, taunting soldiers who apparently thought he wasn't worth wasting a bullet on.
This book is a wild, revealing, take-no-prisoners ride through the early life of Michael Moore. Alternately funny, eye-opening, and moving, this is a book Michael Moore has been writing - and living - for a very long time.
    Members Reviews:
So that's how he got that way
A collection of humorous stories that provide more than a glimpse into how this filmmaker came to be. There are a lot of short "chapters" in this autobiography. Now that I have listened to them all, I wish I had rationed them out. Just like in his films, Moore's love for country and other people, albeit often exhibited in tactless fashion, shine through. Plus it is funny, I laughed out loud three times, despite well-honed skills of stifling such while sitting in the quiet car on a commuter train.
it was a very interesting read
I have never reviewed a book before, I like to keep my opinions to myself. Yet, I really felt the need to comment on this book. It was informative, interesting and actually very funny. Truthfully, I didn't know a lot about Michael Moore beyond the very negative things I have read about him and his movies (I have yet to see one). This book showed me a whole other side of him that I hadn't read about. Now, I'm not saying every word is factual, it's supposed to be, considering he is reading it as his life story, but who knows. It has however given me pause, to think to myself, (not that this is something my parents didn't teach me)......

  • Bossypants Audiobook by Tina Fey

    Title: Bossypants
    Author: Tina Fey
    Narrator: Tina Fey
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 30 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-18-11
    Publisher: Hachette Audio UK
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 447 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Once in a generation a woman comes along who changes everything. Tina Fey is not that woman, but she met that woman once and acted weird around her.
Before 30 Rock, Mean Girls, and 'Sarah Palin', Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV. She has seen both these dreams come true.
At last, Tina Fey's story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live; from her passionately halfhearted pursuit of physical beauty to her life as a mother eating things off the floor; from her one-sided college romance to her nearly fatal honeymoon - from the beginning of this paragraph to this final sentence.
Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we've all suspected: you're no one until someone calls you bossy.

    No PDF??
A very funny book probably enhanced by Tina's narration. The only thing that disappointed was that it wasn't longer, and that the frequently referred to PDF doesn't seem to appear with this version - I see that there's an identical version not available to Australians which reviewers say the PDF appears in "My Library" as a link underneath the table, but no such luck with this version - why do we miss out??
    Laugh out loud funny!
I love Tina Fey and I love 30 Rock so I was hoping this book was going to meet all my humour expectations if there is such a thing. I was not disappointed. I am not going to give you an intellectual analysis of this book, I am just going to say that it is laugh out loud funny and it was a joy to listen to!!
Unfortunately Tina refers to a PDF several times throughout the book and it does not seem that this has been provided by Audible or whomever. But do not let that stop you from purchasing this audiobook!!!!
    Tine Fey does not dissonant
What did you love best about Bossypants?
I started reading Bossy Pants in an actual book.. but decided to pick it up in Audio Book as I though her voice would really make a difference.. it did! Her narration was fantastic, it really have her story an extra layer of awesome. The additional bits you got from having it read to you also were fantastic, including the recording from some of her stand up. Very very good!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed out loud to this, and had a sudden urge to watch 30 Rock!
Don't listen to this on the train!
If you could sum up Bossypants in three words, what would they be?
    Pants wetting funny!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Tina is unabashedly truthful and that is why this audio book is so funny.
    Any additional comments?
This audio book had me in stitches. I frequently got strange looks from people on the train when I either laughed out loud or was crying in an attempt to keep the laughter in.
    This book is FUNNY!
As a big 30 Rock fan (I don't have cable so my SNL knowledge is limited) I had high hopes for this book and it was terrific. Easily the funniest book I've listened to. I'm sure the print version is funny, but having Tina Fey narrate it as well took it to that next level. You get to hear the book the way it appeared in her head as she wrote it and I laughed from beginning to end. I can't wait for her to write another book.

    Title: Endgame
Subtitle: Bobby Fischers Remarkable Rise and Fallfrom Americas Brightest Prodigy to the Edge of Madness
    Author: Frank Brady
    Narrator: Ray Porter
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-01-11
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 572 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
From Frank Brady, who wrote one of the best-selling books on Bobby Fischer of all time and who was himself a friend of Fischers, comes an impressively researched biography that for the first time completely captures the remarkable arc of Bobby Fischers life. When Bobby Fischer passed away in January 2008, he left behind a confounding legacy. Everyone knew the basics of his lifehe began as a brilliant youngster, then became the pride of American chess, then took a sharp turn, struggling with paranoia and mental illness. But nobody truly understood him.
What motivated Fischer from such a young age, and what was the source of his remarkable intellect? How could a man so ambivalent about money and fame be so driven to succeed? What drew this man of Jewish descent to fulminate against Jews, and how was it that a mind so famously disciplined could unravel so completely? From Fischers meteoric rise, to an utterly dominant prime unequaled by any American chess player, to his eventual descent into madness, the book draws upon hundreds of newly discovered documents and recordings and numerous firsthand interviews conducted with those who knew Fischer best. It paints, for the very first time, a complete picture of one of Americas most enigmatic icons. This is the definitive account of a fascinating man and an extraordinary life, one that at last reconciles Fischers deeply contradictory legacy and answers the question, who was Bobby Fischer?
    Critic Reviews:
The Mozart of the chessboard is inseparable from the monster of paranoid egotism in this fascinating biography. Brady, founding publisher of Chess Life magazine and a friend of Fischer, gives a richly detailed account of the impoverished Brooklyn wunderkinds sensational openingBrady gives us a vivid, tragic narrative of a life that became a chess game. (
    Publishers Weekly)
I learned something new on nearly every page of this wonderful book. Frank Brady is the perfect biographer for Bobby Fischer, and
Endgame tells the full and fair story of Fischers astonishing rise and heartbreaking fall." (Christopher Chabris, author of
    The Invisible Gorilla )
Fischer is Americas greatest antihero. This fascinating biography is filled with hope, Cold War intrigue, the fulfillment of genius, and an explosive fall from grace that is both deeply moving and, ultimately, profoundly sad. (Jeremy Silman, author of
    The Amateurs Mind)
    Members Reviews:
    Overly Factual
I thought this book was compelling because of its subject, and it's well written, with logical, linear threads.
But I wanted to read more about Fischer's breakdown, and what led him to withdraw from conventional life. I wanted to see Fisher from the inside. I don't know if that's even possible, or if he ever sought counseling or even knew or cared that his life was in a "move" more baffling than his most challenging chess match.
I'd love to see another writer, or even this one, continue to plunder the depths where "Endgame" leaves off.
The terrible conflict between genius and reality
I was blissfully unaware of the life of Bobby Fischer. From my childhood, I was aware that he was one of the finest chess players in history and the greatest American chess master. I was drawn to this book because Fischer seemed like an interesting character.

a charming memoir, simply and ably told
this book is so charming! coeds in new york city in the 40's, back when young women could travel to the city for the summer in relative safety, date sailors whom they met at dances at Columbia, and only the well mannered (and male) worked at Tiffany's. A thoroughly enjoyable read!
    Wonderful Memoir
What a delightful book! A wonderful peek back into New York City at the close of WW2.A must for those of us not born before the war. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the inside look into the way Tiffany ran its exclusive store.
It is so well written that it took you right into the atmosphere of the department stores, Schraft's, and the Automat where the girls ate their lunch making you feel you were there too.
The narrator was excellent .Just the right tone for the youthful Marjorie a small town girl from Iowa, as she worked that last summer of the War in the bustling city.

    Release date: 07-09-10
    Publisher: Hyperion AudioBooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 85 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Michael J. Fox abandoned high school to pursue an acting career, but went on to receive honorary degrees from several universities and garner the highest accolades for his acting, as well as for his writing. In his new book, he inspires and motivates graduates to recognize opportunities, maximize their abilities, and roll with the punches - all with his trademark optimism, warmth, and humor.
In A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future, Michael draws on his own life experiences to make a case that real learning happens when life goes skidding sideways. He writes of coming to Los Angeles from Canada at age 18 and attempting to make his way as an actor.
Fox offers up a comically skewed take on how, in his own way, he fulfilled the requirements of a college syllabus. He learned economics as a starving artist; an unexpected turn as a neophyte activist schooled him in political science; and his approach to comparative literature involved stacking books up against their movie versions.
Replete with personal stories and hilarious anecdotes, Michael J. Foxs new book is the perfect gift for graduates and fans.
    Members Reviews:
    Good stuff!
Michael again entertains and delights with his playful reading. Enjoyed hearing (between the lines) the maturity, perspective and focus he's developed over the last few years. I actually think I could listen to this again and that doesn't happen often.
    Thoroughly Enjoyable!!

no one can tell the story better than himself
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I had lots of laughs when listening, but also learnt to know that he had a tough start in his career.
    Any additional comments?
M J talks a little fast but that's not a problem for me, if that's a problem for you just rewind and listen again, it's worth it.
Very inspiring and good food for thought.
A very inspiring memoir written by a man who has a learned the important things in life and wishes to pass that knowledge on
Was like an extended commencement speech
Not sure if this book was geared toward young adults. It was a bit cursory and prescriptive.... I would have liked a bit more story telling and may be a little less philosophizing... I do love him though....and I wish him and his family the best....

    Publisher's Summary:
The definitive story of Hollywood's most famous couple.
He was a tough-guy Welshman softened by the affections of a breathtakingly beautiful woman; she was a modern-day Cleopatra madly in love with her own Mark Antony. For nearly a quarter of a century, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were Hollywood royalty, and their fiery romance - often called "the marriage of the century" - was the most notorious, publicized, and celebrated love affair of its day.
For the first time, Vanity Fair contributing editor Sam Kashner and acclaimed biographer Nancy Schoenberger tell the complete story of this larger-than-life couple, showing how their romance and two marriages commanded the attention of the world. And for the first time, in exclusive access given to the authors, Elizabeth Taylor herself gives never-revealed details and firsthand accounts of her life with Burton.
Drawing upon brand-new information and interviews and on Burton's private, passionate, and heartbreaking letters to Taylor, Furious Love sheds new light on the movies, the sex, the scandal, the fame, the brawls, the booze, the bitter separations, and, of course, the fabled jewels. It offers an intimate glimpse into Elizabeth and Richard's privileged world and their elite circle of friends, among them Princess Grace, Montgomery Clift, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Peter O'Toole, Michael Caine, Marlon Brando, Rex Harrison, Mike Nichols, Laurence Olivier, Robert Kennedy, Tennessee Williams, Noel Coward, John Huston, Ava Gardner, the Rothschilds, Maria Callas, and Aristotle Onassis. It provides an entertaining, eye-opening look at their films, their wildly lucrative reign in Europe and in Hollywood, and the price they paid for their extravagant lives.

    Paul Boehmer needs more practice
Rarely am I dsappointed in a book AND the narrator (in this case Paul Boehmer).
The context of the book is only a step up - if that - from stuff we've read in 'D List' tabloids.
Paul Boehmer sounds like an inexperienced narrator (at least in delivering documentary) who is reading this book as practice. Perhaps with a few more tries he could have managed to get the job done well. He pays little or no regard to accentuating a quoted piece of text so that I could decipher that it's different from the rest. His tone of voice fluctuates at all the wrong times -leading me to believe something's going to be said, when indeed, he's already said it. This results in me feeling like I wasn't listening or paying close enough attention. But, alas, that is not the case. He's simply doing a poor job. I don't think I'll be able to listen to this book to its finish.
    Listener, beware!
A great tale about passion and glamour.
Did Paul Boehmer do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
The book is the one you want to be as quickly as possible to be continued once you have put it aside. It is a good pastime, relaxing and entertaining. Could have had a stronger analysis of the characters but it may have reduce its enjoyment.
Paul Boehmer is Appallingly Awful as Narrator
Where does Furious Love rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This is a fabulous read; I have the book itself.

From Esther Martin, owner of the scariest bar in Baltimore, to the American playwright Tennessee Williams; from the atheist leader Madalyn Murray O'Hair to the insane martyr Saint Catherine of Siena; from the English novelist Denton Welch to the timelessly appealing singer Johnny Mathis---these are the extreme figures who helped the author form his own brand of neurotic happiness. Role Models is a personal invitation into one of the most unique, perverse, and hilarious artistic minds of our time.
    Critic Reviews:
"Waters delivers a worthy tribute to his personal pantheon of artistic icons. An impressive, heartfelt collection by a true American iconoclast." (Kirkus)

    Running Waters
It's rare that I laugh out loud when reading a book. During John Water's superb reading of his own book, this happened over and over and over again. Great literature? Probably not, but lots of tongue-in-cheek fun for listeners like me, who have a warped sense of humor. Don't miss this one.
John Waters is a national treasure.
I could listen to John Waters everyday and I wish he had a daily podcast. He reveals such amazing obscure films, books, and performers that often go without credit. There were quite a few times I laughed out loud listening to this and it's like he's talking to you instead of reading. Even the books he talked about which I'm not interested in reading kept me listening. Hopefully he'll release his previous books in audio format. He's got such a great passion for all things the general public calls "bad taste" or makes them aware of it with his own flair.
    Smutty But Funny
I don't know how he does it, but John Waters pushes the envelope further in each chapter he writes. Without a doubt, this is the most vulgar book I've ever read, but also very humorous and honest. Waters promotes, even celebrates what mainstream America disdains, and does it with profound joy and insight.
    I loved this book
This is a very funny book. I think it is for people who already know John Waters, so they will not be shocked by his stories. It was so honest and believable even with the crazy people depicted in it. My only fault was that for some reason, my audio download did not have the ending of the book downloaded on it. I plan to call customer service because I could listen to John Waters all day. I suggest you be sure to listen to the sample before buying, because his humor may be offensive to some readers. I however loved it.
Just like having a ticket to Mr. Waters' show
If you have been to one of John Waters' talks you have heard some of these stories before. He is just as animated and enthusiastic on this reading as he is on stage. The characters, almost all real people, are fascinating. And getting a glimpse into the author's brain, with his own voice, is both scary and amazing. Though my personality is nearly the opposite of his, I have always seem him as something of a hero. I enjoyed listening a whole lot and will probably do a repeat sometime. (Be prepared for some raunchy stuff, though not much cursing.)
