Critic Reviews:

Sea's call

John Masefield's poem has always been one of my favorites. I've never quite underwood why, a landlubber for sure, yet the call has always tugged and his words succeed.

Title: The Island of Dr. Moreau

Narrator: Flo Gibson

Format: Unabridged

Length: 3 hrs and 59 mins

Language: English

Release date: 01-10-13

Publisher: Audio Book Contractors

Genres: Classics, British Literature

Publisher's Summary:

Edward Prendick is shipwrecked on an island where a mad vivisectionist tries to transform animals into human beings...with monstrous results!

Thought Provoking

A thought provoking read. This being the third time I read this tome. Although the premise is far fetched I still wonder about the curiosity of humans to create beings in their own image. In current times the process used by Dr. Moreau is beyond plausible feasibility. Yet we have cloning and robotics and anomalies like the ape that was taught to communicate through sign language. All in the name of advancement and betterment of mankind. Wells remains a favorite author of mine.

So What If It's A Classic

This review is for the Kindle version with the Audible edition.

I enjoyed the book although I can't say that it was the most compelling of stories. It is written well it just did not hold my interest very well. I would call it a mediocre read.

An exquisite spell-binding delight; such good company!

Anne, Gilbert, Miss Cornelia, Captain Jim, Leslie and their Prince Edward Island co-inhabitants invite us to share their lives and loves. In doing so, each of us is swept away to a place lending hope, warmth, comfort, and inspiration. To this point, Anneâs House of Dreams so wonderfully crowns the saga of Anne of Green Gables.

Great read

Wells wrote things that were difficult to have imagined during his life time

I see why this book is on the 1001 books to read list.

Wonderful

This is a wonderful story. The portrait of each character is painted with all the colors of humanity. From beginning to end the reader becomes the invisible guest in the 'house of dreams'-sharing the fireside chats between friends, the joys and sorrows that weave there way in and out of each character's life. The wisdom of the elderly, the hopes and struggles of the young and the vivid description of life on the shores of Prince Edward Island make this a delightful read.

Duración: 5 hrs and 31 mins

¿Qué pueblo?- No puedo darte ahora muchos detalles.

Title: Don Fernando

Author: W. Somerset Maugham

Release date: 11-16-12

Publisher: Audible Studios

Publisher's Summary:

Considered by Graham Greene to be Maugham's best work, Don Fernando is a paean to a golden age of enormous creative energy. It discusses the writings of St. Teresa and the paintings of El Greco, and comments with sagacity and wit on such illustrious figures as Cervantes, Velazquez, and the creator of Don Juan.

This vibrant assessment of a great people at their greatest hour is full of happy surprises, curious facts, and stimulating opinions that reflect Maugham's lifelong enchantment with the landscape and people of Spain.

Critic Reviews:

"Maugham's best travel book (Washington Post)

"He was a superb storyteller - one of the very best in our language - who wrote with a worldly, sardonic understanding of the human condition (Daily Mail)

Title: Catalina

Author: W. Somerset Maugham

Narrator: Harriet Carmichael

Format: Unabridged

Length: 8 hrs and 32 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-16-12

Publisher: Audible Studios

Genres: Classics, British Literature

Publisher's Summary:

Crippled 16-year-old Catalina is the one person unable to join in the festivities of the Feast of the Assumption. But then she has a vision of the Virgin, and is miraculously cured. In the dark days of the Spanish Inquisition, such a claim to blessedness has serious consequences, especially when Catalina seems more inclined to obey her heart than the demands of the Church. The last of Maugham's novels, Catalina is a romantic celebration of Spain and a delightfully mischievous satire on absolutism.

Critic Reviews:

"From an era that produced George Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, and John Galsworthy, Maugham is the great survivor." (Economist)

Members Reviews:

Five Stars

Delightful novel.

A good read

An interesting book, based on 16th century Spain. Maugham skillfully combines fact and fiction, transporting the reader to a time long ago when burnings at the stake were a commonplace occurence. Catalina is a beautiful girl, crippled by an accident. Forsaken by her lover, she is desolate - when her prayers are literally answered by the appearance of Virgin Mary, bearing a cryptic message which ultimately leads to a miracle cure. From a poor nobody, Catalina becomes an overnight celebrity. What happens then is the rest of the story.

Interesting for a look at Maugham's later writings.

A strange little book and, I believe, Maugham's last novel. Religious overtones make this story interesting enough, but 3/4's of the way through, the story seems to take a polar shift as if written by a completely different writer! It ultimately disappoints and remains interesting only to diehard or curious fans of Maugham.

Lovely

This is a lovely story! It's earthy and matter-of-fact in Maugham's unique style. I liked it especially because it's a slap in the face to overt religious self-sanctification. Catalina ... you go girl!

Title: Parade's End - Part 3: A Man Could Stand Up

Author: Ford Madox Ford

Narrator: John Telfer

Format: Unabridged

Length: 7 hrs and 51 mins

Language: English

Release date: 08-09-12

Publisher: Audible Studios

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes

Genres: Classics, British Literature

Publisher's Summary:

A Man Could Stand Up, the third volume of Parade's End, brings Ford's characters to the 'crack across the table of History', across which lie their uncertain post-war futures. Divided into three parts, the novel is a kaleidoscopic vision of a society at climactic moment. The Armistice Day fireworks heard by Valentine Wannop in London with which the novel opens are echoed in the nightmare bombardment of the second part, as we are taken back to the war and Christopher Tietjens, staggering through the mud of 'No Man's Land with a wounded soldier in his arms.

The final section returns to Armistice Day and joins the two characters in a frenetic dance, while Tietjens' wartime comrades smash glasses drunkenly around them.

Members Reviews:

Difficult but Profoundly Moving

The method of this book is difficult: it is principally an extended set of internal monologues that carry the story forwards and back in a wash that leaves the reader/listener by turns disoriented and unsatisfied. The first part of the book is the least satisfying in this regard. However, as the story moves into the trenches of the Western Front through the eyes and mind of Christopher Tietjens the sheer emotional power of the story sharpens the senses of the auditor.

The narration is effective and adroit but this is a book in which the author weaves the story with an insight and intensity unsurpassed in this sort of historical novel. I feel like a bystander within the narrative muttering "so many mistakes".

The gathering together of characters at the end of this book on Armistice Day is poignant and almost overwhelming, with the final book of this story looming with opportunity for disaster.
