From the author of novels like The Moonstone and The Woman in White, Caprisha Page masterfully narrates the short story Mrs. Zant and the Ghost, the tale of a widower and his daughter as they encounter a mysterious woman in a London park. This chance encounter leads to them along a path that involves lost love, murder, (possibly) a ghost, and a fairly vicious love triangle. Is there a ghost? Can Mrs. Zant be saved? Or is it all merely madness?

Very spooky!
I knew this audiobook would be a winner when I saw that it was Gillian Anderson who narrates the story by Wilkie Collins and I wasn't disappointed. I've always been a fan of Gillian Anderson's acting talent. She does such an excellent job with this short story, instilling just the right amount of spookiness in her voice(s). As much as I love to read, I do think that reading this book myself wouldn't have had as much of an impact as listening to Ms. Anderson tell the story.
Is the intriguing woman Mr. Rayburn and his little daughter come across in the park a mad woman or is she ill or is something else altogether happening? Her unusual demeanor frightens Lucy, but the woman's sweetness later wins the little girl over. Her effect on Mr. Rayburn is definitely a positive one and he wishes to help her. The story Mrs. Zant tells is a most unique one. This short story is superbly written by Wilkie Collins and wonderfully acted out by Ms. Anderson. If this audiobook version doesn't give you chills, not much else out there will!
A Victorian Tale of Ghosts and Deceit.
*Audiobook Review
Mrs. Zant and the Ghost is not a scary story, but a sweet one. Narrated by Gillian Anderson, the short story by Wilkie Collins is brought to life. Just not a good life...
The story tells of a woman dealing with the spirit of her long, lost husband. She needs help because her brother-in-law is quietly taking advantage of her. Lucky for her, in comes a good samaritan...
I appreciate the story and Collins, but this tale was severly hurt by the narration. Anderson's monotoned voice and lack of inflection made it difficult for me to enjoy., thus I found myself totally uninterested. I may grab an ebook version to be fair about the story, but for now...
I wanted to like this story from the Victorian era, but sadly, I feel the narration developed a callous that prevented me. As for the story itself, I think I sorta liked it... I think. If I do purchase the ebook, I'll come back and revise my review, but for now, I'm off to the next read!

Classic Victorian Ghost Story
Widower Mr Rayburn is visiting Kensington Gardens with his daughter Lucy when an odd woman startles the young girl. When Rayburn approaches, he sees a pale woman dressed in deep mourning acting in a disturbed manner. He's compelled to assist her, and her story about supernatural forces fascinates him.
Collins' The Woman in White is one of my favorite Victorian period Gothic novels, and I love its convoluted plot and fantastic characters. Mrs. Zant and the Ghost is a novella with some similar themes, but I didn't feel the suspense and pure frustrated helplessness that I did while reading the Woman in White. I pitied Mrs. Zant and her plight, but never really got to know her enough to stress over her situation.
