Length: 7 hrs and 42 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-13-15
    Publisher: silksoundbooks Limited
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes

    Publisher's Summary:
Written in 1911, The Card is the story of Edward Henry (Denry) Machin, who rises from washerwoman's son to the Mayor of Bursley (Burslem in the Potteries town of Stoke-on-Trent) via a mixture of gentle deceit and personal hype.
He is literally a trickster of confidence. His rise to fame is begun at an exclusive ball to which he has got himself invited, where he has the audacity to claim a dance with the glamourous but imposing Countess of Chell. His reputation as a card, or someone we all want to talk about, thus confirmed, Denry continues his irresitable rise through the sticky class system of turn-of-the-century Britain using money, influence and the allure of what we have come to call celebrity.
With the aid of the Countess, who cannot seem to prevent herself helping him, Denry conquers Bursely, The Five Towns and, as the longevity of the books reputation testifies, the literary world.

  • The Hunting of the Snark Audiobook by Lewis Carroll

Title: The Hunting of the Snark
Subtitle: An Agony in Eight Fits
    Author: Lewis Carroll
    Narrator: Phil Chenevert
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-09-15
    Publisher: Spoken Realms
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
What a fun and delightfully silly poem! "The Hunting of the Snark: An Agony in Eight Fits" is a nonsense poem (although many insist it is an allegory) written by Lewis Carroll. If you think Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was wacky, try this one. Published in 1876, the poem borrows the setting, some creatures, and eight portmanteau words from Carroll's earlier poem, "Jabberwocky", in his children's novel Through the Looking Glass (1871).
The plot follows a crew of 10 trying to hunt the Snark, an animal that may turn out to be a highly dangerous Boojum. The only one of the crew to find the Snark quickly vanishes, leading the narrator to explain that it was a Boojum after all. The Bellman, whose only navigational skills consist of ringing his bell, is my favorite next to the nervous beaver who knits lace most of the time.

    The Best Kindle Option Available
I took a gamble on buying this edition when no one had reviewed it yet. I tried several other Kindle editions available and had found them truly appalling in terms of formatting. This however, is significantly better, featuring well structured chapter breaks and all the original illustrations, which enhance the story a lot.
Furthermore, considering it contains both books, plus the excellent Hunting of the Snark, it is a fantastic price.
However, there are still some glaring mistakes, such as some formatting bugs in a few of the poems and spelling errors in places (such as at the start of Looking Glass, where some of the Ls are replaced with 1s - I guess a scanner did the 'writing here').
5 stars for the great price and superior formatting over the other options. -1 star for the glaring lack of proof reading from the publisher.
    Good book
A classic children's book that never gets old. I bought it for my daughter and we read a chapter every night. The only issue I have is that it's a little smaller than I expected, but that's okay.
    Fun and ridiculous, as intended
Playful poetry may be more amusing for adults. In any case I finally learned about the Boogum. What fun! Theres some discussion that there is a hidden message in his poem. If so, I admit to it being way over my head!
    Italicized Text?!
I really wanted to like this--the original illustrations are beautifully reproduced--but bizzarely, half the books are italicized in their entirety, making them pretty much unreadable. If this were fixed, I'd give this 5 stars.
    Outstanding, of course.
There is nothing for me to add to the mountains of praise already out there for this masterpiece of nonsense literature â arguably the finest sustained piece there is, with only William Gilbert and Thomas Hood to rival it.
As the Victioran languge is sometimes a little dated, readers might care to go instead for Martin Gardnerâs Annotated verion that explains everything in detail (too much detail for some tastes).

    Publisher's Summary:
This adventure story of the south seas is one of Conrad's best-known works.
Jim is a young man who has chosen a career with the Merchant Marines. Early on he is tested by the sea and found wanting. His ship founders on the high seas and sinks. Disregarding the passengers, Jim and the rest of the crew manage to escape in lifeboats. The passengers die with the ship. Haunted by his one act of cowardice, Jim wanders from port to port in search of self-respect. He manages to redeem himself and earn the title of Lord Jim in a dangerous and exciting fashion.
Like all of Conrad's stories, it begins a little slow, but as the story unfolds the action builds to an exciting conclusion.

Great, but not the best Conrad
Of the Conrad I have read this has the most story, character development, action, and romantic tone, but it maintains the deep existentialist undercurrent of his other works. This is quite a good book, but is my least favorite of the Conrad I have read. Lord Jim asks existential questions. if we are a product of nature, can we be condemned for our actions? Given our powerful inclination for self justification, can we trust our self image at all? Lord Jim is a less pure example of Conrad's writing than is Heart of Darkness or Nostromo.
I am happy I read this, but would not recommend it as a first Conrad. I recommend reading Heart of Darkness, if you love that, read Lord Jim.
The narration is very good, completely clear, well paced, with strong characterizations.

All short stories are open to interpretation and philosophical dialogue, but this memorable tale from acclaimed author Virginia Woolf might be described as a case study in the mentality of hoarding or at the very least an obsession.
What would John give up to discover and collect a very unusual group of items? Would this collection improve his life, or would it give way to madness?
    Narrated by Glenn Hascall.

Avoid it if you're not interested in reading christian-esque stuff.
Not being familiar with Oscar Wilde's works as well as I should be I guess, the religious bent at the story's conclusion was a bit of an unwelcome twist for me. 1 star for being a lovely tale until the end, plus a second star for the file itself being put together well. No glaring typos or the like.
