    Resumen del editor:
It is the story of a patricide and of the four sons who each had a motive for murder: Dmitry, the sensualist; Ivan, the intellectual; Alyosha, the mystic; and twisted, cunning Smerdyakov. The novel plunges the reader into a sordid love triangle, a pathological obsession, and a gripping courtroom drama.

    Hermanos filosóficos
What did you like best about this story?
    Any additional comments?
What would have made Los Hermanos Karamazov [The Brothers Karamazov] better?
What did you like best about this story?
    la psicologia de los personajes
Would you be willing to try another one of Daniel Quinteros performances?
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Los Hermanos Karamazov [The Brothers Karamazov]?
    ninguna en especial

    Publisher's Summary:
When Maximilian Ophuls is murdered outside his daughter's home by his Kashmiri Muslim driver, it appears to be a political killing. Ophuls is the former U.S. ambassador to India and America's leading figure in counter-terrorism. But there is much more to Ophuls and his assassin, a mysterious man calling himself "Shalimar the Clown", than meets the eye. One woman is at the center of their shared history, a history of betrayal and deception that moves from World War II Europe to the troubled Kashmir region to contemporary America.
Rushdie effortlessly weaves a series of interconnected narratives to form a sweeping and ambitious tale, at once timeless and startlingly modern, that reaches back through the years and across the continents.
    Critic Reviews:
"Shalimar the Clown is a powerful parable about the willing and unwilling subversion of multiculturalism." (Publishers Weekly)
"If Rushdie cannot make you see and smell and feel the loveliness of life in Kashmir, he does, finally, make a commanding story of its loss." (The New York Times Book Review)
"A masterly deployment of interconnected narratives spanning six decades....Dazzling....A magical-realist masterpiece." (Kirkus Reviews)
"A cogent descriptor of Rushdie's sheer and magnificent talent. His beautifully metaphoric language and sly sense of humor keep his complex plot, with its layers of personal and cosmic meaning, tightly woven." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
    Complex, Exotic, Suspenseful
I have never read Rushdie before but now I am beginning to understand his popularity. This book begins with a murder and then proceeds to fill in with backstory of extreme detail. It is this story in Kashmir that I found to be, at first, somewhat daunting. The names, words, customs and history were very foreign and a bit difficult to wrap my mind around. However, after hanging in there I became more comfortable with it and began to understand and get very involved. By the second half of the story I was hooked. The story kept me on the so-called "edge of my seat" to the last line.
The writing is excellent and has a supernatural quality. The narration was perfect, considering all of the foreign words and accents required.
    Excellent, although not for everyone.
    Incredible
I've been working my way through all of Salman Rushdie's works, and this latest book in an incredible read or listen. Like all of his works, Rushdie delves heavily into parallel dimensions, west/east, past/present, male/female, but also manages to tell a tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat for most of the second half of the book. I was particularly impresed by the ending - well done, Mr. Rushdie!
Also worth noting is that the narrator does an excellent job, and his accent and delivery do a great deal to smooth out sections that would otherwise be difficult to western ears.
Timely story of Kashmir, the Pak-Indio argument
I'vr never read Rushdie before, and wasn't sure what to expect. Lovely prose, with detailed embroidery, sometimes interfered with the movement of the story but usually swept me along. The reader was fine, though some consistent mispronounciations were irritating (camino "ray-al" was replaced with camino "reel," for instance). All-in-all enjoyable, and it really shed some light on the battle over Kashmir.

The best series I have ever read or listened to. Excellently written and narrated. The Sacrifice is book 3 in the series and continues the story of Abrahm's Daughters. This story is a whirlwind of emotions mixed with humor and tears as you follow the daughters through all of life's trials and tribulations.

Love this series. I recommend this series to anyone who loves a true love story about families and there struggles. Great back ground on the Amish life and there struggles with God.

    Title: Nordic Tales
    Author: Selma Lagerlof, Bjornstjerne Bjornson
    Narrator: Walter Zimmerman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-02-05
    Publisher: Jimcin Recordings
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 32 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Lagerlof was a Swedish novelist, who in 1909 became the first woman writer to win the Nobel Prize for literature. Her work is deeply rooted in Nordic legends and history. She turned away from the dominating realistic movement and wrote in a romantic and imaginative manner about the peasant life and landscape of Northern Sweden.
Bjornstjerne Bjornson was a Norwegian writer, editor, and theater director, known with Henrik Ibsen, Alexander Kielland and Jonas Lie as one of the "four great ones" of 19th-century Norwegian literature. Bjornson campaigned widely for liberal and national ideals, and became an extremely popular national figure. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1903.
This collection contains four of this remarkable duo's most widely anthologized stories.
Stories included are, "A Christmas Guest" and "The Outlaws" by Lagerlof and "The Father" and "Railroad and Churchyard" by Bjornson.
    Members Reviews:
    Transports one to The North
I've recently started reading/listening to anything I come across regarding Scandinavia after falling in love with the Nordic countries on recent trips. This collection of short stories is among the best "true" Scandinavian ones yet.
A lot of you may not like the slow moving, seemingly uninteresting characters. But the characters in all 4 stories are very much like real Scandinavians that I know. It takes a lot of time & patience getting a feel for them and then *BANG!* the real personalities come out and blossom in a wide array of colors.
My favorite story is "Railroad & Churchyard" which at first seems like a droning, pointless account of two life long pals (one of which, Knute, is a true "man of few words"). Suddenly even the more talkative of the two buddies is shocked when his friend that he's know for decades suddenly opens up and radically changes everyone's life in their small far north village.
Knute's sudden over-eagerness eventually nearly destroys himself and the town. The moral of it being (at least the way I interpret things), "don't get too cocky." A valuable lesson we should all take away from the Nordic peoples.
    What a great listen!
If you could sum up Nordic Tales in three words, what would they be?
    Really fun.
    Any additional comments?
I am from the US and I am touring Scandinavia. I wanted to learn more about the culture so I bought this audiobook to listen to in the car. We really enjoyed this. "The railroad" was especially good.
Interesting perspective into a different culture
Though not overly entertaining. I recently traveled to Norway for two weeks for the first time. I listened to a couple of these tales before going and the rest after. I can vaguely associate them, their subjects, tone, and lessons with the culture I experienced, but only barely. Lessons or morals were hard for me to decipher from the tales, but maybe to be simpler to understand, they'd have to be shallower lessons.
I respect the folk tales, but wouldn't recommend them for entertainment. I've enjoyed tales of the Norse gods, Vikings and "The Real Heroes of Telemark" (about WWII) much more.

    Idioma: Español
    Fecha de publicación: 07-13-17
Editor: Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial
Please note: This audiobook is in Spanish.
(Scott Bryan Wilson, The Quarterly Conversation)

    Title: Heather, the Totality

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 59 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-07-17
    Publisher: Canongate Books
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
The Breakstone family arrange themselves around their daughter, Heather, and the world seems to follow: beautiful, compassionate, entrancing, she is the greatest blessing in their lives of Manhattan luxury.
But as Heather grows - and her empathy sharpens to a point, and her radiance attracts more and more dark interest - their perfect existence starts to fracture. Meanwhile, a very different life, one raised in poverty and in violence, is beginning its own malign orbit around Heather.
Matthew Weiner - the creator of Mad Men - has crafted an extraordinary first novel of incredible pull and menace. Heather, the Totality demonstrates perfectly his forensic eye for the human qualities that hold modern society together - and pull it apart.
    Members Reviews:
    What a disappointment.
Heather is the glowing center of the Breakstone family. Sheâs beautiful and magnetic, worshipped by all, especially her parents, Mark and Karen. To outsiders, their family seems perfectârich, successful, happyâbut, in reality, Mark is plagued by insecurity, Karen is deeply lonely, and their family life is suffering. As a result, Heather feels simultaneously neglected and smothered by her parents, and is irritated by their inability to provide a more balanced and stable version of love.
Bobby Klasky is having some issues of his own. After being released from prison, heâs just trying to surviveâworking odd jobs to make enough money to eat and move out of his drug addict motherâs trailer. Heâs doing okay for himself, but heâs not mentally stable. In truth, he thinks people are disgusting, and he would really love to torture them and rape them and kill them until theyâre all deadâstarting with the most beautiful person first.
If you think you know where this story is going, well, you probably do. Heather, the Totality is a predictable, expected, one-dimensional book that offers up nothing new in the way of character development, plot, or general insight. Weâve all read this has-been story a million times beforeâand, whatâs worse, there are better versions out there.
What bugs me most, though, are the women in this story. They are so unbelievable and cliche. Karen, as a mother, is all wrong. I know many, many mothers (good ones and really bad ones, too), and Iâve never met a woman with such little personality or dimension. And Heatherâgood grief. She is the nymph from a cheesy porno: gorgeous and innocent, yet damaged, naughty, and, gasp, so willing. Ugh.
In other words, youâre going to want to skip this one. I know, I know, but itâs Matthew Weiner! Itâs Mad Men, for crying out loud! Believe me, I feel the disappointment, too. But unfortunately, this little novel is no good. Itâs just no good. Do yourself a solid and let it pass you by.
    Why?
No stars. Yup. No stars. If it were possible, I'd erase the one that amazon requires. The author, showrunner for Mad Men, must recognize this is an outline that will be ultimately rejected for production. Maybe five words of dialogue -- all exposition, and cliched at that, and the only reason I finished it was that it was short.
I really did not enjoy this book
I really did not enjoy this book. I was excited to get it after hearing reviews on NPR. I was glad it was short.
    A great read
Excellent writing - I hope there will be more from Weiner.
the hype didn't live up to the book
    Can't get into it.

A compelling story of how fear and prejudice affect our perspective. Thought provoking and enlightening.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It's not a laugh or cry book - it talks about problems that we still seem to encounter today. It makes one think.
    Beautifully read, captivating
Captivating the mood of the time, Forster describes the colours and sounds of India with great detail, vivid and compelling. A wonderful listen, Syal articulates rather magically throughout. Loved it.

    Publisher's Summary:
These extraordinarily evocative stories depict the generation born in a small-town America during the Depression and growing up in a world where the old sexual morality was turned around and material comforts were easily had. Yet, as these stories reflect so accurately, life was still unsettling, and Updike chronicles telling moments both joyful and painful. The texts are taken from his recent omnibus, The Early Stories, 1953-1975.
In describing how he wrote these stories in a small, rented, smoke-filled office in Ipswitch, Massachusetts, he says, "I felt that I was packaging something as delicately pervasive as smoke, one box after another, in that room, where my only duty was to describe reality as it had come to me -- to give the mundane its beautiful due."

    Publisher's Summary:
Five-year-old Daisy Gonzalez's father is always waiting for her at the bus stop. But today he isn't, and Daisy disappears.
When Daisy goes missing, nearly everyone in town suspects or knows something different about what happened. And they also know a lot about each other. The immigrants who work in the dairy farm know their employers' secrets. The hairdresser knows everything except what's happening in her own backyard. And the roadkill collector knows love and heartbreak more than anyone would ever expect. They are all connected, in ways small and profound, open and secret.
By turns unsettling, dark, and wry, Kennedy's powerful voice brings the town's rich fabric to life. Tornado Weather is an affecting portrait of a complex and flawed cast of characters striving to find fulfillment in their lives - and Kennedy brilliantly shows that there is nothing average about an average life.
    Critic Reviews:
"Dark and dangerous and strange and wonderful...Kennedy writes with the gritty poetry of Daniel Woodrell and misfit sensibility of Flannery O'Connor." (Benjamin Percy)

the narration was ok, no complaints there. the book, absolutely awful! so mundane! i got the book due to it being advertised on Snapchat as a must read summer book. ill never follow a Snapchat recommendation again.
    ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
    Are you kidding me?
What a HUGE disappointment. The author totally lost her focus unfortunately. So many weird zigzagging themes/Ideas that my head was spinning by the end. From the embedded writer in the cow patch to the strip tease joint to the kid w autism that repeats his words 3 times--how about Iraq War, Iraq War, Iraq war, ice cream, ice cream, ice cream, pistachio, pistacho, pistacho. Maybe it was the name Daisy--the cow.
Darn. I was hoping. I could go on but am too confused by the totally idiotic & disappointing ending. Daisy becomes a WHAT? Her brother a manatee? Or was it a jersey cow? Oh and BTW, Daisy was not wheelchair bound. She uses a wheelchair. But then her father is gonna "come back as a giraffe" and Daisy is advising the surviving in bird talk, so in comparison, wheelchair bound is nothing.

    A Favorite writer fizzles
Hard to believe that Banks wrote this tedious tale. The parts that involve the struggling working class family that packs it in and moves to Florida, is engrossing and realistic but the part that starts following Haitian culture, characters and plot twists bored the pants off me. The book became its own metaphor: drift, drift, drift.
