    Title: Fiasco
Subtitle: The American Military Adventure in Iraq
    Author: Thomas E. Ricks
    Narrator: James Lurie
    Format: Abridged
Length: 10 hrs and 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-25-06
    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 516 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
The American military is a tightly sealed community, and few outsiders have reason to know that a great many senior officers view the Iraq war with incredulity and dismay. But many officers have shared their anger with renowned military reporter Thomas E. Ricks, and in Fiasco, Ricks combines these astonishing on-the-record military accounts with his own extraordinary on-the-ground reportage to create a spellbinding account of an epic disaster.
As many in the military publicly acknowledge here for the first time, the guerrilla insurgency that exploded several months after Saddam's fall was not foreordained. In fact, to a shocking degree, it was created by the folly of the war's architects. But the officers who did raise their voices against the miscalculations, shortsightedness, and general failure of the war effort were generally crushed, their careers often ended. A willful blindness gripped political and military leaders, and dissent was not tolerated.
There are a number of heroes in Fiasco; inspiring leaders from the highest levels of the Army and Marine hierarchies to the men and women whose skill and bravery led to battlefield success in towns from Fallujah to Tall Afar, but again and again, strategic incoherence rendered tactical success meaningless. There was never any question that the U.S. military would topple Saddam Hussein, but as Fiasco shows, there was also never any real thought about what would come next. This blindness has ensured the Iraq war a place in history as nothing less than a fiasco.
Fair, vivid, and devastating, Fiasco is an audiobook whose tragic verdict feels definitive.
    Critic Reviews:
"A wealth of detail and evidence that is both staggeringly vivid and persuasive....Fiasco is absolutely essential reading." (The New York Times)
"A comprehensive and illuminating portrait of the willful blindness of the Bush administration to Iraqi realities." (The New York Times Book Review)
"Solid reporting, deep knowledge of the U.S. military and willingness to name names make this account the most complete, incisive analysis yet of the Iraq quagmire." (Publishers Weekly)

How not to plan for a war!
Usually when I start listening to an audiobook at some point I get tired and pause it. Not this book! I stayed up and listened to the whole first half, and then I listened to the second half while I was working the next day. I liked this book! Ricks explains the inadequacies of the people and the planning that led to the situation we now have in Iraq. It was a perfect storm of wrong thinking and misplaced optimism. There is no exit plan, because the plan is to stay there for a long time in some capacity.
    lots of content, well narrated
Scary, convincing, tightly written and so efficiently packed full of content that not a word is superfluous. Whoever thinks that Bush is simply a bumbling fool needs to listen to this--although Ricks never comes out and says he's dangerous (or does he?), you know he is after listening/reading this book.

What does Barrett Whitener bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
His accents are a little distracting. Not really needed for a non-fiction, history book.
If you could give The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History a new subtitle, what would it be?

    Any additional comments?
Another enjoyable book by Tom Woods. This really is the "history you SHOULD have learned in school" book. He starts from the beginning of the first European settlers and goes right into the Reagan/Clinton era. Probably the most that I learned was the section on World War I. It is very interesting how war hungry some of the Presidents were and how vocal they were about it. The fact that Woods uses a lot of quotes shows that these aren't just conclusions drawn from connecting dots but letting the actors of history speak for themselves. That's probably the biggest strength of the book throughout. Although there are, at times, conclusions and some assumptions it is balanced with clear moments of history that are there in the open. It's just not clear why you didn't learn about this in school. I also enjoyed the reading suggestions at the end of each chapter. Final Grade - A
Informative, thoughtful, eye opening and funny.
You learn what they taught you had many parts left out or rewritten to smooth out
    the less favorable aspects.
I thought the facts as presented about Roosevelt, the crash of '29 and his struggle to
guide the country through it were somewhat harsh in presentation.
That being said, this book remains a most fascinating listen.
    Fantastic Book
    Any additional comments?
Reading the other reviews, I couldnt believe that they bought the same book. One person claimed the book only attacked the "left". That is an absurd lie. In the book, and in general, the author has no issue whatsoever attacking Republican policies and actions.
Great book. Full of facts. I will listen to it 1-2 times more.
Highly recommended! Not for the faint of heart!
Woods offers a skillful recitation of truth and accuracy of American history. While I cant say that I agree with every one of the authors opinions and conclusions presented in this book, I am moved and impressed with the clear and faithful account of the facts. This is absolutely what every American of any age needs to be taught concerning our past. It debunks the inaccurate and incomplete history that is being taught in our schools and pulls together the bits and pieces of our historical background.

Using Cline's own telegrams, letters, and reports, the testimony of scores of survivors, and our latest understanding of the science of hurricanes, Erik Larson builds a chronicle of one man's heroic struggle and fatal miscalculation in the face of a storm of unimaginable magnitude. Riveting, powerful, and unbearably suspenseful, Isaac's Storm is the story of what can happen when human arrogance meets the great uncontrollable force of nature.

    A wonderful listen
I've been requesting this book from Audible for three years and its finally here! It's a great story and a wonderful listen. I've both read the book and listened to this version a dozen times over. I actually put it on my iPod and drove through Galveston using it as a sort of guided tour.
The narrator is excellent. Highly recommended as a chilling story about a family fued, the history of the National Weather Service and the Texas Gulf Coast, as well as one monster of a storm. The Daily News in Galveston has a good companion web site once you've finished the book. Good stuff!
How to ruin a book in one easy step. Abridge it.
This book in its unabridged form is a wonderful, informative and thrilling read. In the unabridged form I come to know the storm and its power just as if you are one of the people experiencing it. I was introduced to the US Weather Service while in its infancy and to Isaac, one of the services rising stars. Isaac becomes a flesh and blood person and Galveston a thriving port city alive with people and commerce . While reading the unabridged book I was carried away by the slow building winds and the surf until they become one of the most powerful storms in US history.
In Audible' s abridged recording I missed so much of the heart of the story that I do not believe I heard the same book that I read. I do not recommend the abridged version of Isaac' s Storm because so much is lost in this cut version. You will be buying a book reduced to well below its lowest common denominator and simply miss what I feel is the essential life of the book and all that makes it an impressive read. I highly recommend this book in its unabridged, readable format and am truly sorry the Audible book is a mere shadow of the original book.
    Excellent
I picked this book because I loved Devil In The White City by Erik Larson and wanted his earlier work. Erik has a rare talent of making non-fiction read like fiction. This book is outstanding. AND to think how timely it is with the aftermath of Katrina and how politics got in the way of managing that disaster.
I highly recommend this and Larson's other book if you haven't gotten that one yet.
    Isaacs Storm
Well written, gripping story of the disastrous 1900 Galveston hurricane with a great deal of general information on hurricanes and their forecasting. Strikes eerie parallels with Hurricane Katrina. Makes you wonder if it is possible for us to learn from history. We should certainly give it a try.

  • In the Company of Soldiers Audiobook by Rick Atkinson

Title: In the Company of Soldiers
    Subtitle: A Chronicle of Combat
    Author: Rick Atkinson
    Narrator: Rick Atkinson
    Format: Abridged
Length: 6 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-09-04
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 65 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Granted complete access to the commanders and troops of the 101st, Atkinson saw their war from the preparations in Kuwait through the occupation of Baghdad. As the war unfolded, he witnessed the division's struggles to overcome a murderous attack by one of its own soldiers, a disastrous Apache helicopter raid, and fierce resistance from guerrilla diehards in Najaf, Karbala, and Hilla.
At the center of Atkinson's drama stands the compelling figure of Major General David H. Petraeus, described by one comrade as "the most competitive man on the planet." Atkinson observes Petraeus as he teaches, goads, and leads his troops and subordinate commanders in several intense battles. All around Petraeus, we watch the men and women of a storied division grapple with the challenges of waging war in an unspeakably harsh environment. But even as the military wins an overwhelming victory, we also see portents of the battles that would haunt the occupation in the long months ahead.
In the Company of Soldiers is a dramatic, utterly fresh view of the modern American soldier in action from the premier military historian of his generation.
    Critic Reviews:
"The most intimate, vivid and well-informed account yet published of those major combat operations that President Bush declared at an end on May 1." (The New York Times Book Review) "Excellent reportage..." (Booklist) "Superb writing and balance make this the account to beat." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Interesting, informative and balanced
Unlike the multitude of reports heard during the war from embedded journalists, Atkinson's experience as a war historian provides a depth to our troops' experience during the war. While I was initially hoping for a more detailed summary of the war as a whole, as in Atkinson's brilliant Crusade (about the '91 Gulf War), this view from the 101st Airborne's perspective is still captivating. Unfortunately, the abridgement prevents the book from being completely engrossing. Whole chapters are skipped, with a separate narrator providing a summary. The book still flows reasonably well, but it's a pain to have things keep fast-forwarding all the time.
Only a few portions of the book, primarily the last chapter, deal with WMD and other potentially "policital" topics. Here Atkinson occasionally does insert commentary, but it generally feels like that of a historian's analysis. For the most part, it's a review of facts - for example, WMD weren't found and Iraq - Atkinson hardly "sneers" over this.
I wish it weren't abridged, and I hope he writes a Crusade-style book on the full war, but this one is still well worth a listen.
    You are there
No doubt this Pulitzer Prize winner (An Army at Dawn) knows how to write. He also is a solid narrator. One gets a sense of what it was like to be in boots on the ground, though Atkinson was embedded with military leadership, so it's not the Ernie Pyle account of the dogface. But, it's good writing, good narration, and gives one a perspective of the uncertainties of war and the need for innovative and imaginative leadership at all levels. For someone looking for more extensive discourse on whether we should be in Iraq, find another book, but don't skip this one altogether.

    Publisher's Summary:
In many ways, this momentous year led us to where we are today. Whether through youth and music, politics and war, economics and the media, Mark Kurlansky shows how 12 volatile months transformed who we were as a people. But above all, he gives a new insight into the underlying causes of the unique historical phenomenon that was the year 1968.
    Critic Reviews:
"In this highly opinionated and highly readable history, Kurlansky makes a case for why 1968 has lasting relevance in the United States and around the world. Whether you agree or disagree with its points, you'll find it makes for fascinating reading." (Dan Rather)
    Members Reviews:
    Great book, terrible reader
Important note- my 1 star rating is solely due to the quality of the narration- I loved the book, as I've loved all of Mark Kurlansky's books, but the reader in this recording is positively awful. The choice of a reader with a very pronounced, almost affected, British accent struck me as odd, but as others have noted, his often bizarre mis-pronounciations are so distracting that I would certainly have requested a refund if I'd paid full price.
The reader is apparently unfamiliar with names like Phil Ochs- he pronounces it 'Awks' (thoough later he pronounces Arthur Ochs Sulzberger's middle name as 'oaks'). Thelonius Monk is called 'Thelanus'. My favorite, though, is Robert Lowell, whose surname is at first repeatedly pronounced so as to rhyme with 'towel', though a few chapters later, it is unaccountably pronounced normally.
Unfamiliarity with the pronunciation of some pretty well known names is bad enough, but then there are the real howlers- doctoral is pronounced 'doctoreeal', and Earl Warren is quoted on the need to 'revolve' the conflict between the generations.
Hands down- the worst narration of any Audible production I've heard- and I've been a Serious Listener since the subscription program began.
My advice- wait until they re-record the book with an acceptable narrator, or read the hard copy. The book is worth reading, but this narration is definitely not the way to do it.
Don't let this reader near a foreign word
The book is ok - but no better than that. Unfortunately, that's the good news. I could not recommend the audio version because the reader has not bothered to learn the correct pronunciation of words or names in any language other than UK Engish. He mangles American names (and there are many), he mangles Slavic names and words (and there are many), and he kills that most beautiful language of all-French. It's comical to hear him attempt "Ho-Ho-Ho Chi Minh-the NLF is Going to Win!" It seems like quality control really slipped up on this book--the errors aren't even consistent from one part of the book to the next.
Slanted but intensely interesting and well written
This is one of the best books I've listened to in years. Being born in Chicago in the late 1960's I grew up hearing a lot about the Chicago Democratic convention as well as the Prague Spring and, of course, the various civil rights marches and actions.

The children need serum from the outside world if they are to survive. Their only hope is a few chosen Eskimo drivers and their teams of dogs, who must make a relay race across the wilderness if the serum is to get to Nome in time. The Cruelest Miles Makes Exciting Reading
Fans of adventure stories will love this book. Certainly the rescue of Nome, Alaska from a 1925 diptheria epidemic is an exciting story. Gay and Laney Salisbury's book also includes a lot of Alaskan history and information about Eskimo culture. Their careful research and attention to detail make their stories about the dog drivers and especially the sled dogs positively riveting.
    Chilling!
This is one of the best listens in my 3+ years of audio-book listening. It is extremely well-read, has wonderful flow, and includes lots and lots of relative facts and detail which serve to enlighten the tale and not bog it down. The events and people are fascinating and inspiring, and the history is amazing -- sometimes hard to believe that it all actually occurred in the early 20th century, at a time when most of the country (lower 48) enjoyed modern luxuries and forms of transportation.
I found this book so fascinating, that I purchased the written volume also, and my young son and I read along/listened to the entire thing for a history lesson. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Alaska, sled dogs, or simply a fascinating event in American history.
    A Very Good Book
This one is well worth the listen. It was a fascinating story and was told in a well formatted way that allowed the listener to follow all the supporting stories without becoming lost in minutia that happens so often with historical accounts. The performance by Barrett Whitener was, as usual, outstanding! He made an interesting story even better through the narration. I especially liked the way the author provided the history of the native peoples and how they survive in such an inhospitable place. However, his description of the dogs and the side stories about them and their behavior made this book one of my favorites and will be listened to again, several times I'm sure. If you like little known history and if you like dogs I can't imagine that you will not like this book!
    Shirley
beautifully narrated and written. The history about the Alaskan natives and the wonderful dogs was awe-inspiring.

    Publisher's Summary:
TR's speed of thought and action, and his total command of all aspects of presidential leadership, from bureaucratic subterfuge to manipulation of the press, make him all but invincible in 1904, when he wins a second term by a historic landslide. Surprisingly, this victory transforms him from a patrician conservative to a progressive, responsible between 1905 and 1908 for a raft of enlightened legislation.
Interspersed with many stories of Rooseveltian triumphs are some bitter episodes - notably a devastating lynching - that remind us of America's deep prejudices and fears. Theodore Rex does not attempt to justify TR's notorious action following the Brownsville Incident of 1906 - his worst mistake as president - but neither does this resolutely honest biography indulge in the easy wisdom of hindsight. It is written throughout in real time, reflecting the world as TR saw it. By the final chapter, as the great "Teddy" prepares to quit the White House, it will be a hard-hearted listener who does not share the sentiment of Henry Adams: "The old house will seem dull and sad when my Theodore has gone."

    An attention getter
Not every Audible book catches my immediate attention. In fact I have had to plod through several of them. Theordore Rex, however, caught my enthusiastic attention immediately and I could hardly put the book down (turn off my Audible player).
Of interest to an economics professor, this period of time was extremely active in the development of regulation of industry, anti-monopoly activites, and environmental consciousness. I had no idea just how active Roosevelt had been in these areas. Yet I am not a supporter of the term "robber barons" as the captains of industry in this time period have been labeled.
Listening to this book has been the most worthwhile time that I have spent in a long time.
    Great biography
If the other reviewer noticed, this is the second book of a planned trilogy, and Audible has the book they really wanted, about his time before the presidency.
This was a really good biography. I don't know much about Teddy, but I'm sure there were some things left out due to just needing to cover nearly 8 years in a few hours, some sections just felt rushed. But all in all, I greatly appreciated learning about the President and all of the long term benefits he provided this country.
    Excellent narration, definitely abridged
Went with the abridged version since the narration for the unabridged was so poorly rated across the board.

    Publisher's Summary:
During the last four years of Richard Nixon's life, Monica Crowley served as his foreign-policy assistant and political confidante - a trusted member of the small circle of advisers with whom he shared hours of daily one-on-one conversations.
This is the remarkable story of the final public and private years of the 37th president, based on full reconstructions of the conversations Crowley had with him at the time.
Nixon in Winter puts the listener behind the scenes with the former president, allowing a unique glimpse into his life as elder statesman and private citizen. It is filled with dramatic revelations about Nixon's influential role on the world stage, whether taking action himself to guide American foreign policy or whispering advice to his successors. His hardheaded views on the end of the cold war, his emotional final trip to China, his powerful inside role during the 1991 Persian Gulf War, and his poignant thoughts on the legacy of Vietnam are recounted, as well as his frustrations with being out of power and with the foreign-policy failures of presidents Bush and Clinton.
With astonishing candor, Nixon also shares his final, startling thoughts of Watergate, including his assessments of all the major players in the scandal and what he would - and would not - have done differently. And he offers an uncompromising look at the way the sexual scandals surrounding the Kennedys, Bill Clinton, Clarence Thomas, and Robert Packwood have changed the politics of scandal.
Above all, he reveals a more private self than ever before as he reflects on his faith and his family, copes with the death of Mrs. Nixon, and struggles to deal with aging and the only force that could ultimately destroy him: death.

    Nixon in Winter
I was a senior is HS when Nixon resigned in 74. I felt betrayed , then, because I felt he had lied to the American people. I was always, however, impressed with Nixon's accomplishments and his ability to always fight back and return. This book is about Nixon's post-watergate re-emergence. I found the book very interesting, especially the areas where Nixon worked behind the scenes in politics and world affairs. The portion dealing with his relationships and the death of his wife was especially poignant. Nixon's need to be remembered, and not for Watergate, was a driving force as he saw his end on the horizon.
    Great Nixon account
If you could sum up Nixon in Winter in three words, what would they be?
I have no idea why Nixon fascinates me so much, but this is a great account of his last years. A man still trying to redeem himself after such a stupid mistake with Watergate. A brilliant mind unfairly sidelined for a relatively small political infraction, Nixon was probably more surprised than most to be driven from office for covering up the crime of bugging the Democrats. Parties had been bugging each other for years. It was seen as standard operating procedure, not as the crime of the century. From resignation to death, Nixon tried to become the respected elder statesman he craved. Yet, history and time can be an angry parent, unwilling to ever fully forgive, and reminding you often that you are unworthy.

    Publisher's Summary:
You've been lied to by the government. We shrug off this fact as an unfortunate reality. America is the land of the free, after all. Does it really matter whether our politicians bend the truth here and there? When the truth is traded for lies, our freedoms are diminished and dont return. In Lies the Government Told You, Judge Andrew P. Napolitano reveals how Americas freedom, as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, has been forfeited by a government more protective of its own power than its obligations to preserve our individual liberties.

    Great book
If you like Ron Paul this book will appeal to you. If you still think there is any hope in either Democrats or Republicans doing what is right then this book will just annoy you. Read it anyway. If there is the potential for men like Ron Paul or Andrew Napolitano having an influence on the national political stage then there still might be a glimmer of hope that things could get better.
Over the top in places but still good
Generally, I enjoyed the book and learned many things.
That being said, before buying this book, you should know: Napolitano is an ardent libertarian, 2)he is, to put it mildly, opinionated 3)in at least one instance, maybe two, in my opinion, his opinions "border" on conspiracist 3)some people will be offended by his treatment of Lincoln and other publicly revered persons - he ignores the tension Lincoln felt between his desire to see an end to slavery and his desire to save the union, saying (incorrectly) that he [Lincoln] was not concerned about slavery prior to the war - he also calls him a tyrant due to his actions re; the press during the War (actually, I'd agree on the latter, but still, some people don't like their idols torn down, so i am warning you) and finally, the Judge seems to use the argument of state's rights when it is convenient and the argument against state's rights when that is convenient.
Nevertheless, with those caviats, I highly recommend the book. You may not agree with Napolitano's opinions but the book is quite helpful for understanding the thinking behind libertarianism and those who believe original intent. It may even convince you.
Truth Told by a Champion of freedom and liberty
If you could sum up Lies the Government Told You in three words, what would they be?
I have to say that Judge Napolitano is fearless in his works here. In an ere where speaking your mind and telling uncomfortable truth that exposes lies and liars in the all powerful and omnipotent "Federal Government", it takes courage. Judge Napolitano shows how many areas of Federal and State powers are enhanced by lies especially during stressful times in our history
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
I so enjoyed the narration because Judge Napolitano actually narrates his book and he does it with the passion only he can give as the author. He gets into it and that really draws you in and gives the audio book superb accuracy when delivering the points. Judge Napolitano is exceptionally gifted as a reader, orator and writer.
