    Title: A Silent Star
    Author: Tony Attanasio
    Narrator: James Romick
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 3 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-08-17
    Publisher: Anthony Attanasio
    Genres: History, 21st Century
    Publisher's Summary:
Subsequent to the attack on the USS Cole in October of 2000, British intelligence reports pinpointed bin Laden's location in a safe house outside of Abyan, Yemen. A top secret project, code named Perfect Justice, was carried out by a team of highly-trained CIA operatives, two male and two female, in a commando-style raid. It was to be a Black operation, one that would be conducted in absolute secrecy under the cover of official deniability. If unsuccessful, it would in effect never be acknowledged by the CIA or any other governmental organization to have ever taken place. All but one of the team members survived the ensuing firefight, as did Osama bin Laden. His escape, as well as the tragic loss of one CIA team member, prompted the United States government to expunge all evidence of Perfect Justice from the official records. CIA successes are rarely reported, but failures are obliterated from public consciousness forever. This account will outline the planning that went into the raid at Abyan, the details of the operation itself, its tragic consequences, and the subsequent cover-up by an administration facing a senatorial election in New York and a Republican president taking office in a matter of weeks. It will also examine the lives of the four team members, and what may have prompted each to serve their country in this unique capacity. It is hoped that by reporting the events that took place in November 2000, the author of this book will afford some small measure of recognition to those who risked their lives for their country in Operation Perfect Justice, and to one who gave the last full measure of devotion; a sacrifice that will never be acknowledged by the government she served so valiantly. Since no official documentation of this operation exists in the public record, the author will rely on the expertise of selected military and government officials for pertinent material relating to the authenticity of black operations.

    A Silent Star
One outstanding book! We the people, owe these dictated men and women of the FBI, CIA and the DEA and other affiliated government agencies around the world everything. They risk their lives for our safety and security. A Silent Star was filled
with heart stopping task and maneuvers that were
Skillfully carried out, so that we might maintain
life as we know it. A Silent Star took a surprising
turn, with the romance of two of the main characters. What a refreshing and delightful twist.
And, they lived happily ever after.....I will definitely
recommend this book to all that I know.

    A Silent Star Review
A Silent Star is an in-depth perspective of the lives of many of those dedicated to the service of protecting our country regardless of the perils they may face. The author's ability to bring you in as if you are part of the CIA and is actually happening to you keeps the reader occupied throughout the entire book. The detailed step-by-step operations planning offers a sense of excitement and wonder of just what is yet to come - Good vs. evil. All of this along with the humor for comic relief make A Silent Star a must read - you won't want to put it down!
Excellent thriller fitting for our time
I have been in law enforcement nearly 35 years and served 4 years in the Marines before joining law enforcement and I found this book to be superb. A Silent Star was so well written and accurate that I felt I was actually in the story wondering what was around the next corner.

    Publisher's Summary:
During the 19th century, the United States entered the ranks of the world's most advanced and dynamic economies. At the same time, the nation sustained an expansive and brutal system of human bondage. This was no mere coincidence. Slavery's Capitalism argues for slavery's centrality to the emergence of American capitalism in the decades between the Revolution and the Civil War. According to editors Sven Beckert and Seth Rockman, the issue is not whether slavery itself was or was not capitalist but rather the impossibility of understanding the nation's spectacular pattern of economic development without situating slavery front and center. American capitalism - renowned for its celebration of market competition, private property, and the self-made man - has its origins in an American slavery predicated on the abhorrent notion that human beings could be legally owned and compelled to work under force of violence.
Drawing on the expertise of 16 scholars who are at the forefront of rewriting the history of American economic development, Slavery's Capitalism identifies slavery as the primary force driving key innovations in entrepreneurship, finance, accounting, management, and political economy that are too often attributed to the so-called free market. Approaching the study of slavery as the originating catalyst for the Industrial Revolution and modern capitalism casts new light on American credit markets, practices of offshore investment, and understandings of human capital. Rather than seeing slavery as outside the institutional structures of capitalism, the essayists recover slavery's importance to the American economic past and prompt enduring questions about the relationship of market freedom to human freedom.

    Publisher: Charles River Editors
    Genres: History, 21st Century
    Publisher's Summary:
Since the earliest days of recorded human history, people have constructed buildings not just to provide shelter but to send a message. The earliest texts of Judaism speak of the patriarchs building to mark a place or event, while the Mayan leaders of South America built ziggurats not only to sacrifice their enemies but also to demonstrate their power to others. The Arc de Triomphe in France is just that, an arch to mark France's triumph over both its enemies and itself during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. It should come as no surprise that in the dark days following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, New York City began searching for some way to demonstrate its recovery and resolve. The obvious way to do just that was to rebuild what had been destroyed. Since there was no way to bring back the lives of those lost, the most straightforward path was to rebuild the Twin Towers that had fallen, but there was more to be done than to just rebuild the lost Twin Towers; the new building was to be bigger, taller, and better than before, as everyone hoped the country would somehow be. In the decade that followed, the first of a new millennium, the Freedom Tower experienced many of the same ups and downs that the nation did. Plans to rebuild it were met with the same level of controversy as those to fight the war on terror. Likewise, its popularity ebbed and flowed with the fickle hearts of a people grown weary with fighting an enemy overseas and a poor economy at home. Political parties rose into and fell out of power, changing again and again the environment in which the builders were trying to work. At some points, it seemed that the project would never end.
Fortunately, the building itself finally knew victory and opened to the public, much as it seems the United States has made some inroads in the war against terror. At the same time, there is much left to do on both fronts, as the owners of One World Trade Center continue to try to rent out the space they have created, and those fighting terrorism at home and abroad continue to try to weed out the last vestiges of those who wish the nation ill. Ultimately, the final outcome on both fronts remains unknown, though much of the same spirit of patriotism and determination drives the leaders of the nation and the Center on to a much hoped for victory. Those who continue to wait wish them Godspeed, as they look on from a distance and close up at the flag flying at the top of the trade center and over the hills of Afghanistan.
The Freedom Tower: The History of New York City's One World Trade Center looks at the construction history of the Twin Towers' replacement.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 33 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-01-17
    Publisher: Charles River Editors
    Genres: History, 21st Century
    Publisher's Summary:
Before its destruction in the attacks on September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center in New York consisted of two of the world's most recognizable buildings, representing the strength and wealth of New York City in particular and the United States in general. That was the goal all along for philanthropist David Rockefeller, who had largely self-financed the development of One Chase Manhattan Plaza in the late 1950s in the hopes that the 70 story skyscraper would help spur further development nearby. Rockefeller envisioned Lower Manhattan as the site of a global financial center, full of stock exchanges, brokerages, investment banks, law firms, and other financial businesses.
The name World Trade Center, when spoken by an American, tends to conjure up the best and worst about the nation. The idea for such a financial center was conceived of in the heady days of post-World War II prosperity, when the nation's financial prospects had never looked better and Americans were trading all over the world with both former allies and enemies. At the same time, many in New York City, one of the jewels of the East Coast, had fallen on hard times, and it was hoped that the World Trade Center would revitalize Lower Manhattan and bring the Big Apple a bigger share of the prosperity the world was enjoying. Likewise, the center was designed by men steeped in the modern era, when architects could build skyscrapers as opposed to simple office complexes.
As it would turn out, by the time construction on the buildings began, there were ominous clouds in the political and financial skies. The prosperity that had inspired its construction had given way to a financial malaise unlike any seen since the Great Depression, and many people were offended that money that could have gone to social programs was being used to build more office space. There was also political unrest, as many criticized the country's involvement in Vietnam. By the time the Twin Towers and the rest of the World Trade Center were completed, the project was considered by many to be not only a symbol of American prosperity but also another sign of capitalist greed.
For 30 years, the Twin Towers were the most dramatic features of the New York skyline, and for a short while one of the towers could boast of being the tallest building in the world. People came from around the world to visit them for both business and pleasure, and while most days were busy but uneventful, there were exceptions. A stunt seemingly featuring a man dancing in the sky humanized and popularized the buildings, and they began to prosper, just as the nation itself would rise again out of the mire of the 1970s. Almost as quickly, a fire threatened the North Tower in 1975. In 1977, a man decided to scale the side of the South Tower, and in 1983, a fireman completed a stunt designed to warn people about the impossibility of evacuating everyone in case of emergency.

Publisher: HighBridge, a Division of Recorded Books
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 81 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
As a boy, Robert D. Kaplan listened to his truck-driver father's evocative stories about traveling across America as a young man, travels in which he learned to understand the country from a ground-level perspective.
In Earning the Rockies, Kaplan undertakes his own cross-country journey to recapture an appreciation and understanding of American geography that is often lost in the jet age. The history of westward expansion is examined here in a new light - not just a story of genocide and individualism, but also of communalism and a respect for the limits of a water-starved terrain - to understand how settling the West shaped our national character, and how it should shape our foreign policy. In his clear-eyed and moving meditations on the American landscape, Kaplan lays bare the roots of American greatness - the fact that we are a nation, empire, and continent all at once - and how we must reexamine those roots, and understand our geography, in order to confront the challenging, anarchic world that Kaplan describes. Earning the Rockies is a short epic, a story both personal and global in scope.

    Title: Audacity
Subtitle: How Barack Obama Defied His Critics and Created a Legacy That Will Prevail

    Language: English

    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 107 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
An unassailable case that, in the eyes of history, Barack Obama will be viewed as one of America's best and most accomplished presidents.
Over the course of eight years, Barack Obama has amassed an array of outstanding achievements. His administration saved the American economy from collapse, expanded health insurance to millions who previously could not afford it, negotiated an historic nuclear deal with Iran, helped craft a groundbreaking international climate accord, reined in Wall Street, and crafted a new vision of racial progress. He has done all of this despite a Left that frequently disdained him as a sellout and a hysterical Right that did everything possible to destroy his agenda even when they agreed with what he was doing.
Now, as the page turns to our next commander in chief, Jonathan Chait - acclaimed as one of the most incisive and meticulous political commentators in America - digs deep into Obama's record on major policy fronts - economics, the environment, domestic reform, health care, race, foreign policy, and civil rights - to demonstrate why history will judge our 44th president as among the greatest in history.
Audacity does not shy away from Obama's failures, most notably in foreign policy. Yet Chait convincingly shows that President Obama has accomplished what candidate Obama said he would, despite overwhelming opposition - and that the hopes of those who voted for him have not been dashed despite the smokescreen of extremist propaganda and the limits of short-term perspective.
    Members Reviews:
Good and balanced view of the Obama years
I think the Obama years will be judged very favorably by history, particularly compared to what came before and after. This book breaks down some of the complexity during that time and makes it easy to understand the motives of the actors involved - on both sides.
Mike Chamberlain narrated E.J.Dionne's book. In a review of that book I said that he sounds like Bob Costas to me. That struck me again this time. I usually will give no more than 4 stars for performance if a non-fiction contemporary work is not narrated by the author but I relented this time. The narration is very clear and I haven't heard Chait speak more than once or twice.
If you have a negative view of President Obama then you might think the author should have taken a harsher stance but I think this book is fairly balanced and maybe just a bit too critical. It is not a hagiography.
    Perspective of the Obama Era
This is an engrossing book; it helps put in perspective the 8 years of the Obama presidency.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the United States today, one in every 31 adults is under some form of penal control, including one in 11 African American men. How did the "land of the free" become the home of the world's largest prison system? Challenging the belief that America's prison problem originated with the Reagan administration's War on Drugs, Elizabeth Hinton traces the rise of mass incarceration to an ironic source: the social welfare programs of Lyndon Johnson's Great Society at the height of the civil rights era.
Johnson's War on Poverty policies sought to foster equality and economic opportunity. But these initiatives were also rooted in widely shared assumptions about African Americans' role in urban disorder, which prompted Johnson to call for a simultaneous War on Crime. The 1965 Law Enforcement Assistance Act empowered the national government to take a direct role in militarizing local police. Federal anticrime funding soon incentivized social service providers to ally with police departments, courts, and prisons. Under Richard Nixon and his successors, welfare programs fell by the wayside while investment in policing and punishment expanded.
    Critic Reviews:
"The book is vivid with detail and sharp analysis. Stretching beyond the typical scope of an academic text, Hinton's book is more than an argument; it is a revelation." (The New York Times )

  • Oh, Florida! Audiobook by Craig Pittman

    Title: Oh, Florida!
Subtitle: How America's Weirdest State Influences the Rest of the Country
    Author: Craig Pittman
    Narrator: Mike Chamberlain
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 38 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-15-16
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 33 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Oh, Florida! To some people it's a paradise. To others it's a punch line. As Oh, Florida! shows, it's both of these, and, more important, it's a Petri dish, producing trends that end up influencing the rest of the country. Without Florida there would be no NASCAR, no Bettie Page pinups, no Glenn Beck radio rants, no USA Today, no "Stand Your Ground" - you get the idea.
To outsiders Florida seems baffling. It's a state where the voters went for Barack Obama twice yet elected a Tea Party candidate as governor. Florida is touted as a carefree paradise, yet it's also known for its perils - alligators, sinkholes, pythons, hurricanes, and sharks, to name a few. It attracts 90 million visitors a year, some drawn by its impressive natural beauty, others bewitched by its man-made fantasies.
Oh, Florida! explores those contradictions and shows how they fit together to make this the most interesting state. It is the first book to explore the reasons why Florida is so wild and weird - and why that's okay. Florida couldn't be Florida without that sense of the unpredictable, unexpected, and unusual lurking behind every palm tree. But there is far more to Florida than its sideshow freakiness.
    Critic Reviews:
"This entertaining book will amuse and astonish Floridians and anybody interested in the absurdity of the Sunshine State or human nature in general." (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
Oh Floriduh. I guess we have always been weird.
Would you consider the audio edition of Oh, Florida! to be better than the print version?
Not a reader, but a good listener.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
I wanted to see if I could learn anything new about my home state. Being a seventh generation Floridian, whose family arrived in Florida in 1774, I was pleasantly surprised by most of these facts. A lot of this information was easy to recall from what I lived and from what I had learned. It definitely gives you a detailed history of Florida.
Have you listened to any of Mike Chamberlains other performances before? How does this one compare?
No. He did a good job in a laid back style. The author seems depicted as somewhat opinionated and a bit left leaning. Some of the bad events were a bit overdone, but I could be biased.
Whats the most interesting tidbit youve picked up from this book?
The one I can remember is the start of Billy Graham. I did not know that, but heard him preach on TV quite often as I grew up.
    Any additional comments?
The overall story was definitely a good listen. I enjoyed reliving the past. As we grew up in Florida, we always thought California was weird. After getting to my current age, I realize we have them beat. I love Florida and I only lived out of state twice. Once for U.S. Navy technical training and once to accept my first civilian job when leaving the Navy. I always wanted to return home to family, friends and the warm climate.

Good History of Crime in NYC
Short stories of NYC crime that the NYPD was involved in/investigated etc. From old crimes to more recent. I was worried this was just going to be a NYPD praise book but that's not the case. Very impartial and worth the read. I enjoyed it. Very dark though at times but that is crime I suppose.
    Excellent book. excellent research!
Fascinating exploration of the history of NYPD and its famous cases. A real page turner.
Great for listening in small bits
Would you listen to Undisclosed Files of the Police again? Why?
This audiobook is perfect for people who like to listen in small bits - on the treadmill, while doing dishes, etc. Each story is self-contained and gripping enough to get you through a few minutes of doing something else that's not that fun.
    Any additional comments?
Some obvious audio editing problems - the sound fades in and out at times, and you can definitely hear where pick-ups were inserted. Doesn't distract too much.

    Title: What Have We Done
Subtitle: The Moral Injury of Our Longest Wars
    Author: David Wood
    Narrator: David Pittu
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-08-16
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 26 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
From Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Wood, a battlefield view of moral injury, the signature wound of America's 21st-century wars.
Most Americans are now familiar with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its prevalence among troops. In this groundbreaking new audiobook, David Wood examines the far more pervasive yet less understood experience of those we send to war: moral injury, the violation of our fundamental values of right and wrong that so often occurs in the impossible moral dilemmas of modern conflict. Featuring portraits of combat veterans and leading mental health researchers, along with Wood's personal observations of war and the young Americans deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, What Have We Done offers an unflinching look at war and those who volunteer for it: the thrill and pride of service and, too often, the scars of moral injury.
Impeccably researched and deeply personal, What Have We Done is a compassionate, finely drawn study of modern war and those caught up in it. It is a call to acknowledge our newest generation of veterans by listening intently to them and absorbing their stories and, as new wars approach, to ponder the inevitable human costs of putting American boots on the ground.
    Critic Reviews:
"David Wood makes other reporters smack their foreheads and ask themselves why they didn't do that story. It was sitting right there in front of you and you didn't see it until David put it all together." (David Martin, national security correspondent, CBS News)
"This is a rare achievement. It is highly personal, emotionally charged, comprehensive, provocative and evocative, and, thus, educational. I see this as a must read for students and clinicians." (Brett T. Litz, PhD, clinical psychologist, VA Boston Healthcare System and Boston University Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences)
"David Wood is a treasure - a defense reporter who is both knowledgeable and morally perceptive. Plus, he can write. Read this and you will learn about our soldiers, our wars, and even the times in which we live. If I could, every time I heard someone thank someone else 'for their service,' I'd give both parties a copy of this book." (Thomas E. Ricks, author of
    Fiasco and
    The Generals)
    Members Reviews:
    Trauma goes deeper than PTSD
I have followed David Wood's writing and work for several years now, and here is another example of why he is a Pulitzer Prize recipient for his work. Even though I have the book in print, I really wanted to hear the story with my ears as if he were telling it to me. In fact, David does narrate Chapter 2! I have studied and followed the phenomenon of Moral Injury for many years as it has emerged from the shadows of PTSD in Veterans. While Moral Injury is an integral part of the PTSD experience, it is also it's own set of triggers for behavioral health issues and social problems. The title "What Have We Done", is so appropriate here because we really have to ask ourselves what exactly have we really done. There are sooooo many opinions out there about just wars, volunteer military, heroism, psychological damage, etc. that focus on those symptoms and reactions that are in response to a traumatic incident or situation.
