    Publisher's Summary:
This powerful and ultimately uplifting book honors the heroes of 9/11. It also offers common ground to those in search of meaning and purpose in a world that was changed by the events of that day, both within and outside of the aviation industry. "Tom Murphy offers a beautifully written and powerfully told tale of a group of unsung men and women who showed they have the right stuff in a dark time." (Denis Hamill, NY Daily News columnist)

This book really needs a good proofread. I found so many grammar and spelling errors while reading that was very distracting. There are many passages that seem to repeat as well.
Overall, I think the story is good to remember, commend and just tell the story of how our nation's airlines and airport agencies responded to and worked tirelessly after the darkest day in modern US history to get the skies operational again. Their story is often a silent one and without safe air travel, world commerce and US participation as one of the more powerful countries in the world would have ground to a halt.
    Meah
I purchased this book for a class.
1-Though "required" I never read past chapter 1. The book was required, but it really wasn't. The only assignment which came from the book could have been completed reading a excerpt online.
Readers, note that different schools and professors may require a more in depth analysis of the writing within.
2-The book was listed as "used", I get that, but the cover seen in the thumbnail was not included. I'm a realist, hard cover books have those paper covers that protect the cardboard hard cover; that is what was missing, the paper. Was it necessary? no; did it harm/damage/alter the information within? no. Still usable? of course. That being said, I wouldn't buy a used car stripped of some of its paint either. The white cover of the hardcover was moderately scuffed and has a few black blotches on the cover. For the price, I'll likely just keep the book and may get around to reading later. Just kidding, it will end up on the guest bedrooms bookshelf.

What a great book. It was really amazing to hear the stories of the airline and airport employees as they dealt with the aftermath of 9/11. Definitely emotional and made me rethink what had happened from a different perspective.
    a "911" must read
I often wondered how on earth the air traffic controllers managed the 911 horror. How did they keep their cool? Who made the decisions? I found the 911 Commission report lacking in many respects. This well-written book finally brings us inside the hearts, souls and minds of those maning the front lines during those critical hours. How they made the decisions that seem so right in hindsight, but could not have possibly been predictable in foresight. Well written, compelling and a must read for anyone craving knowledge of what really happened from the folks who were on the inside.

    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 81 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
National Book Award winner Jesmyn Ward takes James Baldwin's 1963 examination of race in America, The Fire Next Time, as a jumping-off point for this groundbreaking collection of essays and poems about race from the most important voices of her generation and our time.
In light of recent tragedies and widespread protests across the nation, The Progressive magazine republished one of its most famous pieces: James Baldwin's 1962 "Letter to My Nephew", which was later published in his landmark book, The Fire Next Time. Addressing his 15-year-old namesake on the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, Baldwin wrote, "You know and I know that the country is celebrating 100 years of freedom 100 years too soon."
Award-winning author Jesmyn Ward knows that Baldwin's words ring as true as ever today. In response she has gathered short essays, memoir, and a few essential poems to engage the question of race in the United States. And she has turned to some of her generation's most original thinkers and writers to give voice to their concerns.

strong voices, witness to our times
the last essay is head & shoulders best above the rest. I'll be listening to it again
    It should be heard.
The essays vary in quality, as do the performances, but these are true stories of souls living, and should be heard.
An Eye-Opening Book on Race by a New Generation
This book is a collection of essays and poems about race by predominantly black people. I find it to be very informative, honest, and wonderful. Most of the essays are amazing. Unfortunately, the editor of this book generously used the term 'Sub-Saharan Africa' and I found it offensive because of the racist history of the term. However, I still enjoyed the book for the most part. So I'm looking forward to listening to/reading other books by Jesmyn Ward. Recommended.

Summary of Red Platoon by Clinton Romesha | Includes Analysis
Red Platoon: A True Story of American Valor by Clinton Romesha is a memoir of the October 2009 Battle of Kamdesh, in which hundreds of Taliban insurgents attacked Keating, the most remote American combat outpost in Afghanistan. For 14 hours, the Black Knight Troop fought to defend their post. The memoir provides a detailed account of the battle, and how Romesha, the staff sergeant of Red Platoon, executed a counterattack that helped save Keating along with many of his men, and earned him a Medal of Honor.
Upon arriving at Keating in late May 2009, the Black Knight Troop - divided into the Red, Blue, White, and Headquarters Platoons and tasked with preparing the base for shutdown - saw right away how vulnerable they were. Established in 2006, the camp was located at the base of steep mountains and bounded by rivers in isolated Nuristan Province. Because Keating was at the bottom of a valley....

    War from a soldier's perspective
Summary of The Red Platoon by Clinton Bomesha by Instaread is a comprehensive analysis of the authorâs account of the battle of Kander, Afghanistan, when his platoon came under attack by hundreds of Taliban. Keating was a remote and vulnerable outpost that was slated for closure in October 2009, Red Platoon from the Black Knight troop was posted there. Shortly before they were due to pull out, the Taliban attacked. In a 14-hour battle, the men of Red Platoon suffered heavy losses, but were able to hold the position until air support arrived. Bomeshaâs account, covering the time before, during, and after the battle, is a no-nonsense, sometimes humorous story of men at war, and while he doesnât talk about the politics of war, after reading even this 15-minute summary, one is left to wonder why weâre still there.
This brief summary gives a good sense of the book. I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review.
A story of bravery and teamwork
This is a summary of the original. It details the October 2009 Battle of Kamdesh, where the American Black Knight Troop fought hundreds of Taliban insurgents after an attack on the most remote American combat outpost in Afghanistan, Keating.
There are points I would have liked more detail, such as what is an "Alamo Position", other than a defensive one born of desperation. But such a small tome by its nature must not bog itself down with details. I suspect anyone with real interest in the work, will favor the original, but for a very casual reader, this will suffice. For a true aficionado, this will serve as an excellent supplementary text. It honors the courage, the brilliance, and the strength of the soldiers involved in so difficult a combat as a unit and as amazing individuals.
This summary describes about the men involved in the battle and their relationships with each other, both strong and strained.

    Simplicity
If you could sum up How to Read the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence in three words, what would they be?
    Simplicity, Educational, Freedom
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
I was surprised how Mark handled the "Test Yourself" sections. I appreciated how I could listen and learn and still participate to test my knowledge/comprehension.
What about Mark Deakinss performance did you like?
The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were performed masterfully.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Simply the Constitution
    Any additional comments?
American's need to understand their constitutional rights or we will lose them. I have read many books on the Constitution but this was is for listeners of all ages and various levels of understanding. My kids now understand know how to read these documents have that lasted 200+ years and so do I. Many books on the Constitution try and give an angle or their own bias but this is just facts. Well done and the narration could not have been better.
    Politicians Read This!!!
What did you love best about How to Read the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence?
I've never read the Constitution or the Declaration before. I really liked the short simple explanation of the seven Articles. I loved the memory trick, lej sasr, GREAT!
What other book might you compare How to Read the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence to and why?
There is no other book I can compare this with. The "Dummy" and "Idiot" books are too hard. This book made it really clear really fast.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The list of powers given to Congress. I thought the constitution gave them permission to do a lot more.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listened through the first part and suddenly realized an hour went by. It's a fast book.
    Any additional comments?
I care a lot about our horrible gun violence problems, free college tuition, minimum wage, and what we're doing to our environment.

Length: 3 hrs and 43 mins

    Release date: 06-23-16
    Publisher: Sandy Island Press LLP
    Genres: History, 21st Century
    Publisher's Summary:
Friends for Life is a story about the experiences and recollections of two women who were strangers brought together through the yearlong deployment of their soldiers during the Iraq War.
Patti, the mother of Army medic Jon, and Jennifer, sister of infantry soldier James, forge a dear and lifelong friendship as their soldiers fight to stay alive in one of the most dangerous cities in Iraq. The story begins separately with the Patti and Jennifer's recollections of the day their soldiers deployed to Iraq from Ft. Lewis, Washington. As the book progresses, their separate stories of Army life grow together as their soldier's deployment continues. During the journey, tragedies occur and survival tactics are learned by the soldiers on the battlefield and the loved ones at home. The shared experiences, frequent communications, and constant support for each other grow into a sweet and lasting friendship.
This story is a unique, nonfiction, war story, through the eyes and emotions of a mother and sister. Though the two women were separated by many things, including thousands of miles, age, and interests, they were drawn together by shared terrors and overwhelming desire to communicate with and send comfort to their soldiers. The Iraq War is a modern war. This book demonstrates the positives and negatives for the families of modern soldiers. Communication is instant, yet, timing is unpredictable. Often, those at home know more about recent events than the soldiers in the battles themselves do.
Portions of this book contain actual instant messages with the soldiers, offering a window directly into the thoughts, words of expression, family closeness and anguish that was always present during the deployment. The book also serves as a guide to soldier's families for surviving a deployment.

From a soldier in the unit
This book was awesome. I served with one of the authors son. He was a medic in my company and I was a team leader in 2nd platoon. I can tell you from first hand experience that this book is 100% factual. Being a soldier you often forget about what your loved ones are going through back home. This book brings to light all of what they go through. I found myself in tears through parts of the book because I remember how hard it was for me to get through some of these experiences. I have recommended this book to all my family and friends. Thank you for writing this book. Deuce four forever!!!!
    Awesome
A really good book describing how families make it through a deployment. Having gone thru a deployment with my husband's family this book helped me to see that all families struggle at times!!
    Whatever Gets You Thru
Excellent Book!!! The Authors were able to convey the extreme raw emotion that is associated with having a loved one in Harm's Way. This is the first generation of family and friends who have had instant communication with their soldiers ( in some cases), who are on the front lines. They can communicate thru e-mails. IMing, phone calls, and web cam. Many of the soldiers, especially in Afghanistan now, do not have these amenities and some of the soldiers do not have the time or the desire to stand in line for two hours to call home, or use the internet. if it is available. I don't know which is harder, the knowing or the not knowing what your soldier is experiencing. In each, case, the key work is waiting.

The years in question were pivotal ones, seeing the perfection of a type of warfare that would eventually be exported to Afghanistan and Iraq and has come to seem like the only kind of warfare in existence - wars in which there is never any clear victory, but not quite enough lives are lost to rally the country against it. Length: 11 hrs and 52 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-10-16
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 351 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
When Bronwen Dickey brought her new dog home, she saw no traces of the infamous viciousness in her affectionate, timid pit bull. Which made her wonder: How had the breed - beloved by Teddy Roosevelt, Helen Keller, and TV's Little Rascals - come to be known as a brutal fighter? Her search for answers takes her from 19th-century New York City dogfighting pits - the cruelty of which drew the attention of the recently formed ASPCA - to early 20th-century movie sets where pit bulls cavorted with Fatty Arbuckle and Buster Keaton; from the battlefields of Gettysburg and the Marne, where pit bulls earned presidential recognition, to desolate urban neighborhoods where the dogs were loved, prized, and brutalized.
Whether through love or fear, hatred or devotion, humans are bound to the history of the pit bull. With unfailing thoughtfulness and compassion and a firm grasp of scientific fact, Dickey offers us a clear-eyed portrait of this extraordinary breed and an insightful view of Americans' relationships with their dogs.

    The definitive argument about pitbulls
Well researched and fascinating. You'll learn a lot about dogs, but perhaps even more about humans.
    Wow!!!
I LOVED this book! Not only for the content, but for the narration as well.
Randy Kaye did a marvelous job narrating this book. Her voice just flowed with the reading. Everything was precise and she was so easy to listen to. I will look for more books she has narrated.
The author did a a wonderful job with the investigation for the content of this book. It was all so interesting and eye opening.
We have a dog that is least partially Pit Bull, as we know her mother was a Pit. Her name is Simba as she looks just like the lion on The Lion King. She is the most wonderful, loving, athletic, strong, smart pet that I have ever known. So for me, the book was personally gratifying as the words in this book verified what we all along had thought about having a Pit bull.
We live in a subdivision where it is in our covenant's that you can't have a dog that is 50% pit bull or more. We have had her for 4 yrs now and haven't been run out of town yet! Probably because she is so friendly, loving and just so darn cute!
Buy this book whether you have a Pit or not. You will be glad you did!
    Stunning achievement
This book is an impressive piece of reporting, with important information for anyone concerned about animal welfare in the United States. It not only presents a thorough description of the history of pit bulls and pit bull prejudice in this country, but it also describes a thought provoking connection between racial discrimination, social equity, and pit bull type dogs. Fascinating, well written and engaging!
    Staggeringly thorough, very well written.
Easily one of the best of the genre. Rightly emphasises the inseparable link between what these dogs have come to symbolize in our culture and the people perceived to own them.
Good for both sides of the pit bull debate
Important information for anyone working with dogs (of all kinds) ... and sometimes really tough to listen to.

    Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 55 votes
    Genres: History, 21st Century
    Publisher's Summary:
When a bolt of lightning ignited a hilltop in the sleepy town of Yarnell, Arizona, in June of 2013, setting off a blaze that would grow into one of the deadliest fires in American history, the 20 men who made up the Granite Mountain Hotshots sprang into action.
An elite crew trained to combat the most challenging wildfires, the Granite Mountain Hotshots were a ragtag family crisscrossing the American West and wherever else the fires took them. The Hotshots were loyal to one another and dedicated to the tough job they had. There was Eric Marsh, their devoted and demanding superintendent who turned his own personal demons into lessons he used to mold, train, and guide his crew; Jesse Steed, their captain, a former marine, a beast on the fire line and a family man who wasn't afraid to say "I love you" to the firemen he led; and Andrew Ashcraft, a team leader still in his 20s who struggled to balance his love for his beautiful wife and four children and his passion for fighting wildfires. We see this band of brothers at work, at play, and at home until a fire that burned in their own backyards leads to a national tragedy.
In this impeccably researched audiobook, drawing upon more than a hundred hours of interviews with the firefighters' families and colleagues, state and federal officials, and fire historians and researchers, New York Times Phoenix Bureau chief Fernanda Santos has written a riveting, pulse-pounding narrative of an unthinkable disaster, a remarkable group of men, and the raging wildfires that threaten our country's treasured wild lands.
    Critic Reviews:
"In Fernanda Santos' expert hands, the story of 19 men and a raging wildfire unfolds as a riveting, pulse-pounding account of an American tragedy; and also as a meditation on manhood, brotherhood and family love.
The Fire Line is a great and deeply moving book about courageous men and women." (Héctor Tobar, author of

    touching
heartfelt story. i didnt know a single one of these gentlemen but by the end i felt that i had lost 19 brothers!!
Amazingly Told Story of Heroism and Loss:
The heartbreak for me after listening can be but a mere fraction for those that lived this modern day story of loss and grief. This story of optimistic young lives snuffed out as quick as they seem to start is weaved seamlessly with the selfish human actions at the root cause of these fires. This book will make you feel the hope of achievement, as well as the heartbreak of young people dying for a cause. Anger also is a strong emotion elicited by this book, as we are shown a mirror for our own egotism despite the ecological warnings. Very powerful and will leave you walking with a sick feeling of loss--though this lesson is one that needs to be felt.
    Well written story
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
This is a good story, mostly biographical about the Granite Mountain Hotshots. The author does a good job of weaving the bios into the history and timeline of the Yarnell fire that cost the lives of 19 fire fighters.

13 Hours by Mitchell Zuckoff and the surviving members of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) annex in Benghazi is a narrative recounting of the events surrounding the militant attacks on the Benghazi diplomatic compound and the nearby CIA annex on September 11 and 12, 2012. These attacks resulted in the deaths of Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, State Department communications expert Sean Smith, and two CIA Global Response Staff (GRS) members, Tyrone Woods, and Glen Doherty.

Excellent summary! This made me change my mind and now I am buying the original book and watching the movie!
This Summary and Analysis book is about Mitchell Zuckoff's "13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened In Benghazi". I must say that this is indeed a great companion to the original book specially for busy people. I have evaded watching or reading about negative news of warfare, killings and anything that has to do with war. Not that I don't care, I do. I am aware. I just don't want to delve too much into negativity that the wars have brought into this world. Anyway, that changed when I read this summary of 13 hours. I am even thinking of buying the original book and watching the movie. I wish for the truth to emerge amidst all the controversies. This independent analysis about a controversial event in American political and foreign affairs has effectively tugged at my heart. It has given me the nudge I needed to buy the original book, watch the movie and stand up for the truth. It's well worth the time to read it first before diving in all 332 pages of Zuckoff's original book.
Overall an excellent purchase and I highly recommend this summary book.
I received this book for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Inching a little closer to the truth of what actually happened.
