Atticus Riot and Bel are two of the most intriguing characters I've encounter of late.

I'm a huge fan of historical mysteries so I hungrily gobbled this one up. Ms Flynn doesn't disappoint, not in storytelling, or in the development of wonderful characters and a sense of place. This book gives the reader the sights, smells, and feel of San Francisco in late 1899. It takes the reader from the dirtiest wharf dive to the most prestigious men's club in the city, and many places in-between. As the Volume I suggests, I certainly hope this is the beginning of what will certainly be a long running series. The main characters are intriguing and beguiling. When you turn the last page, you too, will want to read more of Atticus Riot and Bel. They may not be a match made in heaven, but in the hell that is turn of the century San Francisco, they both have reasons to keep certain things to themselves. I will eagerly await Volume 2 as I need to know what happens next to Atticus Riot and Bel.

This book was well written with an interesting plot with many surprises. Strong characters as well as interesting historical detail. Highly recommended.

A great read! Enjoyed the historical setting of San Francisco. I also liked the.characters, Atticus Riot and Tim and Bel. I hope there will be more of them from Sabrina Flynn. It reminds of some of the books by history professor, Louise Locke. She has written a series called "The Victorian Mysteries of San Francisco."

Fun, with flaws

The story is good; the writing is better than just good; and the book itself (I read the Kindle edition) is a testament to the fact that using spell check is no substitute for a good copy editor/proofreader. I enjoyed the book, but kept tripping over misplaced commas, dropped words, words that were obviously meant to be deleted as the author revised, and the really annoying misuse of the word "guy" instead of "gey" for an intensifier. I don't consider this sort of thing to be picking nits; anything that causes the reader to stop and think more about the words and less about the story is a problem for the writer--and these were problems that showed up several times in each chapter.

Aside from that, however, the Stapleford family is looking forward to marrying off Richenda, and to that end Richenda has invited a member of minor European royalty to be her maid of honor. The Royal in question, however, is not interested, which puts the bride in a very embarrassing position, so the family asks Euphemia, who's the only person they know with a real grasp of protocol, to pinch-hit and impersonate her. Death, of course, ensues, and Euphemia, Rory, Merry, and Bertram all attempt to find out exactly what happened and whodunit.

Poor editing or lazy author

Author in too much of a hurry to not demand excellence in editing? Publisher should be ashamed there has been sufficient time to make the corrections, especially in an e-book. These errors were continual and interfereâd with the read. This author should have more respect for her readers. Don't skip any future production stages. There are plenty of places to catch errors.

Please do not spend your money. The author did not spend her time well.

Misused words, extra words or not enough words in sentences, fractured grammar, and incomplete or misleading sentences throughout the book make it seem as if the author dictated this book to her computer with some sort of voice recognition software and never bothered to re-read it herself! Please do not spend your money on this book or your time reading it. The author did not spend any of her time making it worth your while. I read it on my Kindle so can only give my opinion on that version..

Ye Gads!

Did the author, Ms. Dunford, fall off her horse while riding to hounds and while addlepated continue to write this book? It is a mish-mash of poor editing, spelling and grammer. It certainly is a "faux-par (sic)"! However, the heroine of the story continues to be delightful and in spite of my sighs and many groans I liked the story. I certainly hope the author recovers enough to continue to delight us with more books. I do wish the "who dunnit" not be so obvious. Please give us more complicated mysteries for the heroine (and us) to wrap the little grey cells around.

A first-rate historical novel with great writing and a believable plot. I loved it.

This is the first book of a series and I'm looking forward to the others. The author captures a fascinating time in the history of Portland, Oregon. The research that has gone in to this book is amazing but what's even better is the writing. I have had a tough time putting it down and getting other work done. S.L.Stoner is a truly gifted writer who takes you there and keeps you on your toes with a fast moving plot and a lot of twists that all make sense. I highly recommend this book.

Historically correct mystery

The historical references, time period depiction, and events all could have happened; however, I could not warm up to the characters. Sage Adair tells the tale, but only occasionally do I feel any real emotion as a result of his actions, the events he encounters and endures, or from the other characters in the story. It could have been an excellent book, but I personally found it in the mediocre range. However, in all fairness this title was referred to me by a friend who liked the Sage Adair stories immensely.

Delightful and Suspenseful

If, like me, you despise greedy rich people, always look for the union label, and live in Portland, Oregon, I can't imagine a book you would enjoy more. Like the protagonist, I experienced a significant reversal of fortune from a combination of hard work and good luck, but my loyalties remain with the working class. This well-written, lively story delighted me and I'm going to read all the books in the series. (I'm deep into the next one right now.) Fun reading perfect for my summer break!
