Publisher's Summary:
The U.S. economy is in shambles. The ordinary citizen is slipping in his battle for family survival. The incoming president denounces the financial shenanigans of speculators and vows to regulate the greed of those who have precipitated the disaster. Vast acres of national forest and a plethora of small businesses are in a life and death struggle against corporate powerhouses skilled at making and exploiting the law. In ballot boxes across the country, the progressive vision has been ratified, promising a counter-offensive against decades of corporate control. The year is 1902.
Within an historical context eerily reflective of the current day, John Sagacity Adair, Sage to his friends, is determined to expose the chicanery of the financial establishment. He works secretly on behalf of the growing labor movement, pursuing his mission into hobo jungles, lumber camps, seedy saloons and the drawing rooms of the rich. Fighting beside him are a parlor house madam, a leader in the local Chinese tong, an Appalachian coal-miner's daughter and an Afro-American maitre d' who shows more class than the people he serves.
On the night Sage uncovers a potential timber fraud, he is also faced with a cry for help. A brutal railroad guard has been murdered and his friend's young nephew must be cleared of the crime. Faced with the choice between pursuing the personal or the political, Sage chooses the personal only to find himself led straight back to the political. Events cause Sage to question how he will maintain his humanity and hope over the course of what promises to be a life long struggle.
Members Reviews:
A first-rate historical novel with great writing and a believable plot. I loved it.
This is the first book of a series and I'm looking forward to the others. The author captures a fascinating time in the history of Portland, Oregon. The research that has gone in to this book is amazing but what's even better is the writing. I have had a tough time putting it down and getting other work done. S.L.Stoner is a truly gifted writer who takes you there and keeps you on your toes with a fast moving plot and a lot of twists that all make sense. I highly recommend this book.
Historically correct mystery
The historical references, time period depiction, and events all could have happened; however, I could not warm up to the characters. Sage Adair tells the tale, but only occasionally do I feel any real emotion as a result of his actions, the events he encounters and endures, or from the other characters in the story. It could have been an excellent book, but I personally found it in the mediocre range. However, in all fairness this title was referred to me by a friend who liked the Sage Adair stories immensely.
Delightful and Suspenseful
If, like me, you despise greedy rich people, always look for the union label, and live in Portland, Oregon, I can't imagine a book you would enjoy more. Like the protagonist, I experienced a significant reversal of fortune from a combination of hard work and good luck, but my loyalties remain with the working class. This well-written, lively story delighted me and I'm going to read all the books in the series. (I'm deep into the next one right now.) Fun reading perfect for my summer break!
If you are a historical mystery fan, I would definitely recommend this book to you
This story opens with the murder of a young boy.
