Publisher's Summary:
Thomas Buckley is one of the first of his kind. In the year 1651, he is a private investigator. He has gained a reputation for impartiality that has spread throughout the New Hampshire settlement of Portsmouth. He is called there to investigate a strange series of murders. Witchcraft is suspected, but cannot be proven. There must be another cause, yet he cannot find one.
While at Portsmouth, he discovers a strange priest who lives alone in a solitary church. He finds a grieving family who hasn't yet recovered from the loss of their son. A witch who lives in the forest seems to be at the center of it all. Yet, what the people believe happened and what is actually true are two different things.
Buckley can sense that he is running out of time. For if he cannot discover who is behind the murders, a woman will be burned alive.

Great Concept, Lousy Followthrough
I got this for free a while ago and only just now got to it. It's 3 stars as a freebie, if I had paid the $6.99 it probably wouldn't get 2 stars.
Writing had a few errors but it was moderate considering many self published books out there, with a slower yet descriptive wordy style very much like the period it is set in.
Slowly yet decently told with an intriguing main character -- until a rushed ending that, frankly, is as disappointing as it is not plausible. I'll chalk it up as a rookie mistake as it's the eye rolling full confession stimulated with hardly any real provocation, and clearly without the confessing villain thinking of the consequences of said confession.
My suggestion to the author is, hire a professional editor (editors do more than proofread, they help with plot holes and other story/continuity issues) and/or join a writer's group (they can help with pointing out areas needing attention in your work as well).
Three Stars
I mostly enjoyed this story but it has a lazy ending--
Two Stars
Outdated style.
Lackluster
When I read the description of the book, I was excited. At 60% not much was happening, and it never did. Could have been a blockbuster with a great story to tell. Mr. Smith, I will be waiting for another story only because I sincerely liked the main character.
Great book
I was hesitant at first but was very quickly surprised at how good and interesting this short story was.I couldn't put it down. I definitely recommend reading it.
