Engaging

Disclaimer: I received this book in a book promotion offer by the author. This in no way influenced my honest review of the book.

This is book four of the Sue Lee Mystery Series. It is now the final year of World War II and Sue Lee and Jimmy go to Hawaii to examine the contents of Uncle Yohos safe deposit box. They find the scabbard for the sword and a scroll by Yoshi telling some of the early history of the sword. The story goes back and forth between some of the key people in Sue Lees life. Dr. Jane decides to leave San Francisco and join the Royal Army Medical Corp and go to India, apparently there is a desperate need for medical doctors to treat the wounded from the campaign in Burma. Alex and other friends are on assignments of great risks to themselves.

As the book nears the end the author begins to bring to a conclusion some of the characters: for example Sue Lee receives a letter that Tomusso is married to another physician and working in Genoa after the War. Sue Lee leaves the Army after the World War II and takes over her Uncle Yoshis job with the shipping company she is a partner in. Sue Lee discovers the sword (I wont tell youread the book).

One has the feeling this is the end of the series but I understand there is one more book coming up in the series. The book is well written and the suspense builds and builds throughout the story. I enjoy the bits of history that are woven into the story. I find it most delightful to discover a little pearl of knowledge here and there. I am looking forward to the next book in the series as I have enjoyed this interesting series. Jeffrey L. Hering does a good job narrating the series.

Lotingen.

Intelligente, abilmente costruito e scritto in modo elegante.

Riepilogo Editore:

Length: 3 hrs and 23 mins

Language: English

Release date: 07-04-16

Publisher: D. M. Sorlie

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

D. M. Sorlie's third book in the Sue Lee Mystery series takes you deeper into deception and espionage as the World War Two progresses into the year 1943.

Tommaso her, Italian lover, finds himself in a potential explosive situation.

The grenade fell from the boy's hand.

Both doctors froze.

Sue Lee finds herself trapped in a deadly situation in Cuba, at a strategic airbase.

Her right hand was covering the wound to staunch the bleeding as she watched for his next move.

Her new lover Alex takes us deeper in to the war and the deception.

The report was organized by genders - men, women and male and female children. Below that was the percentages, he noted that 78 percent were Jews. Himmler circled and initialed this in red. Alex guessed that the little man with the sloppy wife was an account before the war, counting other people's money. Now the bastard was counting murdered children.

During all this, her new friend Jane has arrived from England.

Jane was known in Gibraltar as the Flying Doctor, a humanitarian helping the sick and elderly in war-torn Spain after the Spanish revolution.

The year after England declared war on Germany, Jane started using her plane to help Jewish families escape from the Nazis through Spain, and found herself deeply entrenched in the underground.

Somehow her cover was blown, and a contract was put out to kill her. Jane was shot while flying and rescued by Sue Lee, who piloted them both back to Gibraltar, and they became good friends. The narrow escape convinced Jane it was time to get out before she jeopardizes others in the underground. Sue Lee invited her to live in California and help solve the problem of the missing sword.

Where is the sword?

Disclaimer: I received this book free as part of an author promotional giveaway. It in no way influenced my review of this book.

This is book three in the Sue Lee Mystery series. It is now 1943 and Sue Lee is still working as an Army code breaker and an espionage agent. Sue Lees Italian physician friend/lover Tommuso, who had returned to Italy and his wife in book one and emerged in book two working on a hospital ship with a Scotsman physician is helping to save lives primarily of refugees and soldiers.

In her personal life Sue Lee is still on the dangerous trail of the missing Japanese sword that belonged to her Uncle Yoshi. Doctor Jane has arrived it San Francisco from Britain to stay with Sue Lee and help hunt for the sword.

The book is well written and researched and is a delight to read. I can hardly wait for the next book in the series. I like the fact that the books are short only averaging between three and half to four hours. It makes a great change of pace after reading a 15 or 30 hour book.

Jeffrey A. Hering has done an excellent job narrating the books in this series. I like the fact that Hering has been the only narrator. I hate it when a series has a different narrator for almost every book in the series.

Many interesting characters

Fascinating period in history

Lots of mystery and intrigue

Nice to see women in positions of authority. Unusual in that time period

Publisher: Edward Ware Thrillers at War, an Imprint of Cheops Books, LLC

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 2 votes

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

Adolf Hitler threatens Colonel Sir Edward Ware and Dora, Lady Ware, that if they do not hand over the Lawrence maps, key to world domination, he will kidnap their daughter. The late Lawrence of Arabia has drawn these maps for the British military to prepare for the next European War. Hitler guesses this, and wants to tip the scales in favor of Germany instead of England.

Churchill, Edward's best friend, and the Colonel are running their own foreign policy under the noses of first Baldwin and then Neville Chamberlain and the British government. Tension does nothing but build through Nazi rallies, through the Munich Accords in 1938, but does not stop with the first shots fired after the Polish Invasion in 1939. Finally, the war itself will be won or lost depending upon what Edward and Dora do next. Will it be their country or their daughter? They must choose.

Members Reviews:

Epic Historical Fiction Thriller

If you like novels during the period of Adolf Hitler, this one is for you.

The book starts out with a tensely constructed dinner scene with Adolf Hitler. The main characters Colonel Sir Edward Ware and Dora, Lady Ware are scared that the Führer might kidnap their daughter, if they donât hand over the Lawrence maps. The late Lawrence of Arabia had drawn up these maps for the British military to prepare for the next European War. Hitler wants them.

The suspense grows from there. Hitler even toys with the Wareâs by holding onto their baby. Great scene.

Through out the story there are large historical figures who have frequent cameos such as Churchill, Chamberlain and Goering. The story is easy to read and has a dark period tone and well written characters.

As it is part of a series, the author was smart to have an ending that leaves you wanting more.

About Ladies in Danger series

This series is about the adventures of the marquess of Southgate named simply as "South" as he unravels the mysteries of the regency era.

Plot Sypnosis

When the Lord Killian Ware, second son of the Duke of Worthing, arrived from his country seat, he was in tears. His daughter disappeared two weeks ago. The Duke begged "South", the Marquis, to find her. Meanwhile, the Marquis' younger brother, Killian, who is rumored to be something of a rogue and a gambler, but is very kind-hearted, found an orphan boy in the streets and rescues him from a pair of ruffians. The boy swears he'll serve the Marquis' brother until he dies. Killian laughed, adopted the boy as a page. Killian, South, and the page must now race again time to find the Duke's daughter before it was too late. How is the mystery of the howling earth tied to the Duke's daughter disappearance?

Members Reviews:

This is a captivating enough story to be entertaining and it's not too long so you can enjoy it without spending a ton of time

This book has a similar kind of feel as Sherlock Holmes. There is a duke whose daughter is missing and he needs help finding her. This is a captivating enough story to be entertaining and it's not too long so you can enjoy it without spending a ton of time. I liked the characters and the plot was good but sometimes a little predictable. You will enjoy it if you like a bit of mystery and adventure.

Good Story, Easy Read

This is the second in a series by Deborah Diaz which I enjoyed. With all the ingredients needed to make a good mystery, Diaz has developed the Marquess of Southerton's character a little bit more in this one. It has a mix of Sherlock Holes and Nancy Drew, which makes for an interesting read. Look forward to picking up the next book in this series.

I can't wait to read the first and third book!

A little predictable, but still a suspending story, which takes not so much time for reading. The characters developed very well, especially duke. I now can't wait to read the first and the third book! It's not only a mystery but also a thriller. Recommend!

Decent, not Great

Was OK

The Hardy Boys meet Sherlock Holmes.

The Earth Was Howling is the second short mystery story with the Marquess of Southerton and his brother Lord Ware. It reads like a chapter book version of a Hardy Boys story but with less mystery than Frank and Joe would like. The Marquess is a Sherlock Holmes wannabe with his brother taking center stage in this story.

The story was decently written but not intricate enough to be a real mystery. It seemed like parts of the story were just revealed like a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The author's characters were fun and drawn sufficiently well to leave this reader wanting more story but the plot's brevity left too much out.
