this book contains 4 short stories and they are as good as most other short stories I've read. however, most of the time i do not understand the endings any more than these. the last story of the book Legend of a Badman, Hogan writes a very great story with more information (all good) about the main character than you might get from several others combined. Mr. Hogan keeps you interested at all times. he doesn't waist several pages trying to describe scenery or people. He just gets right to the scene and lets your imagination do some of the work, and i like that. It's a must read for your western library.

    Excellent!
I always enjoy tales about Henry "Hashknife" Hartley and Dave "Sleepy" Stevens. Hashknife can no more stay out of a mystery than some people can keep from eating. The characters are well developed and believable.

In 1967, a brutal murder in the midst of an anti - Vietnam War group sparks an investigation by Sam McCain, in Ed Gorman's most politically charged mystery yet.
When we last saw Sam McCain he had been drafted to fight the war in Vietnam. But Sam's military career ended in boot camp when he was accidentally shot in the head and forced to spend three months in a military hospital to recover.
Sam has now returned to his hometown of Black River Falls, where he works as a lawyer and part-time investigator for the court of the snobbish but amusing Judge Esme Whitney.

When Cullen is found murdered, the obvious suspect is Steve Donovan, but Sam has serious doubts about the man's guilt. At least three people had reasons to murder Cullen, and Sam begins to suspect he'll discover even more as his investigation heats up, in this dynamic new politically charged mystery novel by a veteran of the form.

The End of An Era, Sam McCain the detective, and this Iowa author-founder.k
Worthwhile read, seemed a bit more reminiscent and introspective of Mr Gorman, his final efforts.
    Disappointing
Very disappointing...After reading all ten in this series, I would have hoped for a "wrap up", some resolution to how the hero's life turned out...even a cliff hanger would've been better than...nothing. The story itself was "blah", not exciting at all...Wondering if there will be a book #11...
    Another winner for Ed Gorman
The not quite last (I hope for the time being) series on McCain this is a maturing of the hero.
The delightful descriptions and character development continues, with perhaps a little to much
anti Vietnam war rhetoric..that is if it is possible to have to much anti Vietnam war rhetoric
    Another great read
    Rooting for Sam McCain
When you find yourself rooting hard for the hero, you know you're reading a good story. Sam McCain is one of those heroes and this is one of those stories: part murder mystery and part Vietnam-era social commentary, it's a joy from beginning to twist ending.
    Four Stars
Gave it to my wife who enjoyed it!

    Publisher's Summary:
He's dead. So says his own newspaper, the Glasgow Gazette: Douglas Brodie, 25 January 1912 - 20 July 1947.
Just four weeks before, a senior banker was kidnapped. Brodie delivered the ransom money, but the drop went disastrously wrong. Brodie was coshed in the kidnappers' den. He woke with a gun in his hand next to a very dead banker with a bullet in his head.
The case against Brodie is watertight: the bullet comes from his own revolver, the banker's wife denies knowing him, and his pockets are stuffed with ransom notes. In an apparent act of desperation, Brodie cheats justice by committing suicide in his prison cell. Could this be the sordid end for a distinguished ex-copper, decorated soldier, and man of parts?

    another great story
Would you consider the audio edition of Gallowglass to be better than the print version?
Generally yes. This author is ideal for audio. The number of chacters is right for the story but not too many for listening. Pace of story is ideal. Only negative is that Samantha's accent is completely wrong for the character. Her accent is not scottish middle class which grates slighty to my scottish ears.
What did you like best about this story?
Although you could work out most (but not all) of the plot before the end, the story, writing and pace kept you involved.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
    The funeral tea
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I found a lot of humour but was also interested all the way through
    Any additional comments?
With this ending, can Brodie star in another book?
    Buchan-nesst
The beginning of this story seemed more in the style of John Buchan, but eventually seemed more like the prose of previous books in thus series. It was a little disappointing to begin with, but with well drawn characters it was not hard to keep on listening to the story
The narrator was excellent and made the story and characters come to life. Despite the beginning it was another good book in this series

An incalculable fortune in conflict minerals lies on the bed of a lost lake in the middle of the African jungle, where an active volcano stands tall and deadly, having already destroyed the only civilisation nearby. The volcano serves as a border between two warring central African nations. And an uncontrolled, murderous guerrilla army claims the territory for its own, using a combination of modern terrorist techniques and timeless black magic to keep strangers out. Richard Mariner is leading a team into the savage heart of it all in a perilous mission, seeking the lake and the fortune it contains his only clues a half-forgotten legend and a mysterious black pearl that is so much more than it seems.
    Members Reviews:
    Exotic setting for adventure
Peter Tonkin has written several adventure stories featuring Richard Mariner and his wife Robin. Richard is head of a large company with varied interests around the world. In this book Richard and Robin are involved in finding a lost lake located near a volcano that is the border between two African nations that have been at war with each other for many years. At the same time a renegade guerrilla army also claims the territory for itself. At stake is a fortune in conflict minerals reputed to be hidden in the lake. References are made to events that happened in this area, and between people featured in prior books. Not much effort is made to fully bring the reader up to date on these occurrences which mars the plot somewhat but does not prevent the enjoyment of a good old fashioned adventure story placed in an exotic setting in the midst of African Jungles.
Fans of Tonkin's prior novels featuring the Mariners will enjoy this one, and new readers can bring themselves up to snuff with a bit of effort. The reward will be immersion in very well researched pure adventure in settings completely outside of the norm.
