Title: One Foot on the Edge
Subtitle: The China Bohannon Series, Book 1

    Narrator: Rebecca Cook
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 6 mins

    Publisher's Summary:
The gay 1890s aren't always. Gay that is. Sometimes life is dangerous, especially if you're next on someone's murder list. In 1896, there aren't many career choices for a young lady. China Bohannon has fled one bad situation, and is looking to start her life over as a strong, independent woman in the wild and woolly town of Spokane, Washington. Convincing Gratton Doyle to take her seriously as a bookkeeper is hard enough, and when it comes to working as an investigator in the Doyle & Howe Detective Agency, it's well - nigh impossible.
But what if China is able to solve a murder case no one, including the police, wants to take on, that of a young girl found dead, her body thrown in the river? Maybe Gratton will hire her then. But first, China has to avoid becoming the murderer's next victim.
    Members Reviews:
    Series Debut
Newly arrived in frontier Spokane and having convinced her Uncle Monk and his partner Gratton Doyle to give her a trial job as bookkeeper for their detective firm, feisty China Bohannon is thrilled when Monk says he needs her help on a job.
The job is little more than rifling through female belongings in search of missing jewels. But China's nose for trouble gets her interested in a missing young girl. Later, when China stumbles upon the body, you know more trouble is on the way.
China has enough problems convincing Grat she's worthy of the office job. As she persists against his firm suggestions in "investigating" the murder, he gets his dander up and, worse, she becomes a priority on the killer's to-do list. Grat does his best to protect her, despite her inclination to become vulnerable to danger.
This is actually the debut number in this wonderful series and this reader came on it backwards, having read the two later novels first. But I was pleased to learn a little more about China's background, how she got her dog Nimble and the beginnings of her testy relationship with Grat.
If you haven't read this series, I heartily recommend you get started.
    Very Worth The Read
I've never been a big fan of mysteries, but after reading C.K. Crigger's One Foot on the Edge (The China Bohannon mysteries), it looks like that is going to change. I plan to purchase the second book in this series as soon as I finish telling you how much I enjoyed my first encounter with China Bohannon.
China is intelligent and resourceful, traits mostly frowned upon in females in the 1890's. Her commitment and resolve to get a job done, or rather just to get a job in her uncle's detective agency, leads her deeper and deeper into a case everyone, including the police, has written off as closed.
The characters are vividly drawn, and I felt the setting was brought to life with Crigger's ability to transport the reader to the place and time. I appreciate that China is not just another pretty face, but dresses in the fashions of the times, which are described in enough detail to add interest to the story's setting .
All in all I found One Foot on the Edge to be an entertaining read. I cared about the characters and what happened to them and it kept me turning the pages.

    Publisher's Summary:
From the author of City of Silver, a beautifully rich and puzzling historical mystery set in Paraguay, 1868.
A war against Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay has devastated Paraguay. Ninety percent of the males between the ages of eight and eighty have died in the conflict and food is scarce. In the small village of Santa Caterina, Padre Gregorio advises the women of his congregation to abandon the laws of the church and get pregnant by what men are available. As he leaves the pulpit, he discovers the murdered body of Ricardo Yott, one of the most powerful men in the country, at the bottom of the belfry.
There are many suspects: Eliza Lynch, a former Parisian courtesan who is now the consort of the brutal dictator, Francisco Solano Lopez, and who entrusted to Yott the countrys treasury of gold and jewels; Lopez himself, who may have suspected his ally Yott of carrying on an affair with the beautiful Eliza; Comandante Luis Menendez, local representative of the dictator, who competed with Yott for Lopezs favor, and a wounded Brazilian soldier who has secretly taken up with one of the village girls.
Lynch is desperate to recover the missing gold, and the comandante is desperate to prove his usefulness to Lopez. To avoid having an innocent person dragged off to torture and death, a band of villagers undertake to solve the crime, including Padre Gregorio, the village midwife, her crippled husband returned from combat, their spirited daughter, and a war widow. Each carries secrets they seek to protect from the others, while they pursue their quest for the truth.

    Invisible Country: A Mystery
As I had lived in Paraguay for 6 years, I loved this. For those who do not know Paraguay, It is a great companion to At the Tomb of the Inflatable Pig. This history in the latter book sheds much light on the histrionics of the Invisible Country. A great read!!!!!!
    Paraguay Revealed
Paraguay was just a name on a map of South America until I read this richly detailed mystery. Against a backdrop of the War of the Triple Alliance, and with a wide assortment of characters, this story has given Paraguay meaning that I will not soon forget.
Recommend this book to all readers of historical fiction.
Invisible Country is an excellent exposition of the horrors of war, created and maintained by a narcissistic sociopath dictator, in the final third of the 19th century in the little known country of Paraguay. The writing transforms the reader to the culture and class structure of a country where ninety percent of the male population were killed during the war. The novel starts with an interesting proposal from the local village priest to solve the population problem and continues with the local population's strategy for surviving the war. Romance persist and is well told under these trying conditions. Recommend this book to all readers of historical fiction.
Thanks to Annamaria Alfieri, Readers Will Learn the Suffering the Paraguayans Endured During the War of the Triple Alliance!
In 1868, the War of the Triple Alliance has devastated Paraguay. Ninety percent of the male population is dead. Most everyone is starving. The small village of Santa Caterina is no exception. Bring It On!
Jack Hadley had crossed the river and the border into Mexico to kill a renegade named Ranse Brennan, but his timing was not very good as revolution and war had broken out led by the bandit leader, Megares. To make things worse, Brennan had become a colonel in Megares' army. But it didn't matter to Hadley he would get Brennan just the same. Wm. Raine was the master of western fiction--full of action and quick fists. Known for quanity rather than quality back during his life time--he wrote over a hundred novels--for the most part he has sadly been neglected as the good writer he was. He is one of my favorites. I think you will enjoy this book.

    Good
This is another good story once again. The reason why I sort of gave it a 3 star, is maybe there need to just a little mystery or in it.
Holds related events together very well and with little confusion.
    Pretty good reading.
    A very fine short story!
While the story is based on historical science (Archimedes' "I found it!" when he applied geometry to hydrostatics and mechanics), it also includes an ancient lesson on human behavior that is as old as humanity itself: the rejection of observed reality for economic gain (see for example the current USA Congress).
    A Sleuth in Ancient Egypt
I am personally not fond of these types of stories, read it for the interesting premise, thinking it would have a different twist. It did not. Same old same old.

Dr. G and CSI Meet....? That's the Problem
The premise (and promise) of Devoured and a recommendation from one of my favorite authors, Matthew Pearl, was all I needed to give this book a try. Unfortunately, it didn;t meet my expectations but, hey, 3 stars isn't that bad. What I mean in the title of this review is while the characters of Hatton and Roumande were interesting and sympathetic, I don;t know that the author could decide what the rest of the book should be. Too many characters and misdirection became a bit of a jumble. The letters from Borneo were enthralling and if they gave clues to the evil that lurks in the heart of men they did not give enough clue as to what kind of evil. The supposed importance of Wallace in the book - even featured on the author's website - played no significant role whatsoever. The themes of "dirty cops," human trafficking, and others were very intriguing but came too late to rescue my impression of the whole book. I will say this: the last 1/3 of the book was VERY STRONG and I will definitely and happily give #2 - "The Devil's Ribbon" - a try based on this strength.
And can I add: I LOVE my Kindle Fire while reading historical fiction. Part of the fun is the 19th century vocabulary and being able to use the Kindle's dictionary feature or a quick flip to the web on my fire while reading to look up a word or idiom is awesome! Well done, amazon!
    A Dark and Disturbing Tale
I'm a huge fan of Victorian mysteries. I read all of Anne Perry's books.
I enjoyed this very dark and complex tale which delves into the issues the 19th Century struggled with regarding the evolution of man. As well as a look at child labor and police practices of the day. There is also a fascinating introduction to early forensics here.
A Clause for Murder (Crime Mystery)
    You will devour this book......
This book was grisly, and a vampire novel. It was also a race against time, to get a precious family member saved. I loved it. It was creepy, but I liked the engrossing story, and mystery. It was very well written.....
Devoured By Their Lusts, They Became Victims Of A Vindictive Killer
In 1856 London, forensic science and the theory of evolution are angering Christian politicians and clergymen. Benjamin Broderig, aristocratic collector of biological specimens, has returned from exploring Borneo. The letters he wrote to Lady Katherine Bessingham, detailing his adventures, have disappeared. Proving quite controversial in their anti-Christian stance, these letters have drawn the attention of several Londoners, including a vicious killer.

I enjoyed the adventure. I listened to it on a long drive and it made that drive seem much shorter than it was. When I bought the book, I wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by all the twists and turns.

    Reliable Good Book
Would you consider the audio edition of The Elixir of Death to be better than the print version?
The performance of this audio was first class, helping to bring the characters to life while you can just relax and listen.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Hilda was my favourite character, she is a no nonsense sensible independant woman with a strong character.
What does Paul Matthews bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
Paul has a good voice to listen to and easily portrayed the different characters without going over the top with changes in voice tone and accents.
