Salvation lies in the damnation of mankind
Gripping, challenging and a completely unexpected brilliant story.
I'm a romance girl most of the time but one who occasionally leaps out of my comfort zone to taste the treats that other genres have to offer. This is by far a stretch for me to read horror mixed with war, but I'm so glad I did.
I kept thinking, when will I start to get bored or disgusted, but that never happened. The more the storyline weaves in and out of the characters lives, the more I wanted to read on. For me the characters made this book. I connected with each and every one of them. The shifting viewpoints let me in their heads and let me know their stories. Particularly with the SS officers, characters I'd never thought I'd like to get to know. The author here was extremely clever in dealing with how to portray them so the reader would give them credibility and actually grow to like them. This was balanced by the introduction of characters from all sides of the war. The Russians, Jewish concentration camp survivors, and civilians.
Now to the plot, and what a plot it was, vampire armies being recruited by Himmler to stop the advancing Russians. But .. That was not all that was at play another subplot, one even more sinister is revealed, when human kinds destruction is the true intended casualty. This story really has it all and at times the writing seemed so believable I had to remember it was fiction, and vampires are mythical. True evil abounds in many forms in this novel but it's the light of the heroes that keep you turning the page.
Oh and being a romance girl I was glad to see there was some of that too. That ticked the last box on this one. For a book that has it all you shouln't miss out on reading Division of the Damned. It's a damn fine read.
Real Vampires and Germans you will love in spite of ...
This book about World War II and vampires is so different from what I expected it to be. Finally vampires how they should be, blood-thirsty, semi-mindless, human hunting monsters. Controlled by a Master.
It is set during WWII on the Russian front. When I started this book I was ready to hate the German SS monsters and cheer on the vamps for getting them. I was unsure how to feel about the Russians. Both groups were almost equally brutal during that period, although the Germans, in my opinion, deserved a swarm of Vampires to devour them. But then this author does that thing with his characters, he gives them redeemable qualities, very redeemable even. Ack! What now? I actually gotten to like the poor SS soldiers and the Russians! How very cleverly done.

    Publisher's Summary:
Amateur sleuth Annie Tillery has been warned to stay away from Nevshehir, Turkey, where she is heading to meet her boyfriend, Ty Egan, and Cedric Zeeks, Ty's best friend. Intent on helping the two excavate an archeological site where they hope to link human remains to the first African ancestors, Annie does her best to shake her foreboding feelings as her plane lands in Istanbul and she prepares to embark on her next adventure.
But when a stranger claims he is there to pick her up and then disappears once he sees Ty, Annie is immediately thrown back into worry mode - especially after Ty tells her there is unexplained tension surrounding the dig and she receives a threatening note at the hotel. Still, as the three head to Nevshehir, Annie is buoyed by the excitement surrounding ancient Turkey and the possibility of uncovering secrets. The dig is plagued by accidents and theft, however, and the three friends, assisted by the head archeologist's twins, must search the ancient city of Istanbul and the caves of fantastic Cappadocia to find who is sabotaging their work.
In this young adult thriller, detective Annie Tillery must once again walk on a dangerous path in an attempt to unravel a complicated mystery and solve the secrets in the fairy chimneys.

    Fascinating and fun adventure
The writing in Secrets in the Fairy Chimneys can be really breath-taking at times so much that I found myself backtracking to reread passages and take it all in again. Lots of depth in description of character and place to bring the exotic into your home and you take in the words. Apart from the CSI angle which, as you would expect from a forensic scientist, is acutely poignant, the rest must have been thoroughly researched as well as nothing about events seems out of place. A captivating and charming plot and a very enjoyable YA book overall. Looking forward to reading more by Linda Frank.
they sat majestically among the gray-green brush and white clay like soil. The air shimmered from the heat
We were in a valley of shapes I couldn't believe were not made by humans, humans with a fabulous imagination. Conical formations called fairy chimneys in various sizes spread away from us in every direction. The color of bleached bones, they sat majestically among the gray-green brush and white clay like soil. The air shimmered from the heat. I could smell the odor of clay mixed with a faint herbal scent that must have come from the brush. Some of the fairy chimneys had windows and doors. Could people actually live inside? It was dry here, and hot.
Anne Tillery has joined her boyfriend Ty at an archaeological dig in Turkey. He and his best friend Cedric are at the dig representing Vermont University. They will be working alongside a Dr. Atsut who is in charge of the project. Ty, Cedric and Dr. Atsut are trying to prove that human remains at one of the earliest known archaeological sites in Turkey contained DNA that would link them to the first humans that evolved in Africa. But, accidents and missing artifacts seem to be plaguing the site and there is even fear that it may be shut down.
As I've found out in other books of this series, Annie is quite a detective. Hopefully she, with the help of Dr. Atsut's twin children, will be able to make the connections that will end the accidents and theft before the Turkish government steps in to put a halt to everything.

Hard to put it down. Great story, keeps you intrigued about what is really going on.
    Unique And Well Written
I enjoyed reading The Dead I Know. What I enjoyed most was the character of Aaron Rowe as he takes up a job training to be a funeral director. This fact alone would make an interesting read. However, Aaron's got other issues. He has horrible nightmares and he is a somnambulist who can wake up anywhere and not remember a thing. He also lives in a run down trailer park with Mam who isn't herself anymore and always calls Aaron, David. He has an interesting life for being a teenager and he has a lot of his plate.
The Dead I Know packs a punch and at 200 pages is a swift, engaging read. It was interesting to me to read about the ins and outs of funeral work. Aaron takes to it rather well though it is difficult work and it seems to help keep his mind off other things while at the same time it stirs up deep emotions.
I think this is a very well written, unique book. It's got a lot dark humor and the shining light that comes through is John, the owner of the funeral parlor and his family. John takes Aaron under his wing and tries to teach him the business. John's wife and daughter take to Aaron and his days are quite happily spent with them at the funeral home, it's the night that is the most haunting for Aaron, and his troubling sleeping habits are a challenge so working at the funeral home turns out to be a sort of bright spot in his life where order and a sense of purpose give him something to look forward to.
If you want something different to read-perhaps unsettling, The Dead I Know is a great choice.
    Humor? What Humor?
This is an odd little book.
First of all, I kept hearing that it was full of black humor. I didn't find it remotely amusing. I did find it full of unexpected depth and remarkably sweet for a book about death.
It's a bit of a coming of age story, set against the backdrop of a funeral home and a life of poverty and heartbreak. I never really understood what drove Aaron to work at the funeral home, but I soon didn't care. I just read along, fascinated, as he learned about death, grieving, and living.
While the subject of death is treated honestly (and at times gruesomely), it is also treated with huge amount of respect and reverence.
    Well worth the read.
THE DEAD I KNOW is a fantastic novel. There is no simpler way to put it.
THE DEAD I KNOW by Scot Gardner is an exciting and surprising novel flooded with anticipation and excitement. It is sure to keep any reader on the edge of his or her seat with every turn of a page.
Aaron Rowe is no stranger to death. He is not afraid of it, either.

Quick & Dirty: In Wicked Games, an engaging, memorable story will have you sitting of the edge of your seat.
Opening Sentence: âAre you sure youâre okay?â asked Carter.
    The Review:
Lilah and Carter met as freshman. That first year, their love was strong, and it seemed as if nothing could tear them apart. But cracks are forming that are starting to show. All it takes is one night with Jules and one depressed, jealous girlfriend to make actions spiral out of control, and tears, sweat, and even blood will be shed.
This is an intensely hooking novel. From the start, I was a little nervous I was starting a another typical love story with typical characters and a typical plot. The first chapter is on a beach, with two young lovers, so that strengthened my fear. Donât get me wrong, I love me some romance, but Iâve been reading a lot of those lately, so when I realized it was much more than a cheesy love story, I was estatic. Let me tell you, this captured me and reeled me in on a hook, with itâs unique characters, enrapturing plot, and beautiful writing style. The characters were right next to me, acting out the words on the page. Just, wow!
Carter is a swoon-worthy male character, caring, affectionate, with a tinge of rebellion. When his girlfriend is being rude and over-dramatic, then threatens to hurt herself if he leaves her. You could say itâs a pretty rough patch to be in. But Carter handles it with an admirably calm exterior, though we, the readers, get to see the tumultuous storm of emotions on the inside. Jules was also an amazing one, and I fell in love with her point of view. Lilahâs the crazy one, the moody one, the one that made me think a murderer was lurking in every corner. Her POV was also exceptionally well done. Just enough humanity to make me feel sorry for her, and empathy for her case.
Uch. The ending. The ending of this book was surprising, heartbreaking, horrible, in so many ways. It was sadly ironic. I donât want to give too much away, so Iâll stop there. Donât try to infer what happens, because I didnât say what character the horrible thing happens to, so technically, you will probably be way off if you guess. I know I was, even though I was waiting for a different tragedy.
For anyone fitting in the new adult or young adult categories, I think youâll love this one.

Bodies have a canny way of finding Samantha Jean Haggert - the first, the dead body of her mama; the second, a naked man in the middle of the Arizona desert. For Sam, dealing with one dead body in her lifetime was more than unfair. Two is downright cruel.
Seven years after running from West Virginia, Sam's now a young woman of 19, trying to put the pieces of her life together with the help of her family - Jacob, Boone, and Laura. But the naked man in the desert spirals her world out of control, resurrecting past hurts and revealing old secrets. It also pits against one another the two men who vie for her heart: Carson, her friend, her first kiss, and the one man who knows everything about her past and loves her despite it; and Turner, the stranger who knows nothing, but who excites and frustrates her all at once.
When bad choices made as a child lead to more bad choices as a young adult, Sam finds herself at a crossroads, forced to face her demons head-on if she plans to have any future at all - with Carson, with Turner, or with anyone. But fixing the wrongs of the past takes time, and learning to forgive one's self is damn near impossible.

    Members Reviews:
Beautiful, heartfelt, hopeful... an amazing sequel to an amazing book
I can't say enough about this book, the first book,Desert Rice, or really any of this author's books. First, she got me to fall in love with a zombie western inWanted: Dead or UndeadandSurvivor Roundup, and I don't even like zombies. Or westerns. Then she broke my heart in two with Desert Rice, and now, she follows it up with this gem of a novel. With beautiful prose, a distinct and enchanting voice, and life-altering themes of love, forgiveness, passion and hope, Angela Scott once again brings readers into the very heart of her characters' lives.
I started this book and couldn't put it down until I finished it. Sam went through hell when she was 12, raped by men sworn to protect, left broken and horribly abused. Now, she's 6 years older, but still has the scars from her childhood. She hasn't yet tested the boundaries of love and passion until she stumbles upon a mysterious man in the desert who was left for dead. When she saves his life, she changes her own life in ways she never could have imagined.
Now she's torn between the steady heartbeat of the love of her childhood friend, or the new passion that burns for the handsome stranger who has undone the carefully built walls around her body and heart.
I can't say more without spoiling the journey, but if I could I'd have a lot to say! I'll leave it at this: Angela Scott, I hope you write fast, because I'll be buying the next book (and reading it) the moment it's available!
Great series. Great author. Love all her books so far.....
The story line is great and mesmerizing. Now that I've finished the novel, I want to know more about the main character's lives. I hope a third novel is made in this series. Read Desert Rice first. You will not be disappointed. Then jump right into this one. The writing is simplistic, but it is a captivating story.

    Creatively Imaginative Spooky Tale
Review of Black Door by Evans Light
    5 stars
From reading the blurb and studying the excellent cover art, I had certain presumptions going into this story. I expected something on the order of the B-movie Sleepaway trilogy (the set with the evil female serial killer preying on unsuspecting adolescent campers), or at minimum a set of directors akin to a Morticia and Lurch couple. Not so, not so at all; author Evans Light spun this story in a direction I couldn't possibly have imagined, and I am very thankful. "Black Door" is a totally enjoyable, yet very spooky, tale, but not one in which I had to close my eyes to make it to the end. Mr. Light has an incredibly imagination, and I highly recommend "Black Door" to a wide readership
    A 26 page novel!
This really, really short story impressed me greatly! I've read much longer books that didn't get the job done as well as Evans Light did in 26 pages. Everything was there - from beginning to end, great character and plot development in an eerie tale that had me holding my breath at the end. And all in 26 pages! Three kids and their dad on the way to summer camp. Or so they think. I recommend this to everyone, it's that good. Three thumbs up, Evans!
    Black Door
Although I was disappointed that this book was only 26 pages long, I did think it was okay. I didn't realize it was short until after i bought it. I enjoy full length novels. Hoping to read something else from this author that is a lot longer next time.
    Black door.
Well, this turned out to be one heck of a story and the ending was such a surprise that it put a smile on my face. Not what I was expecting at all! Yep, I'd recommend this story and author.
    Confused?
Lots of emotions when reading this book. Wary at the beginning, terrified in the middle, and confused/relieved at the end. A good story that draws you in and keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next - but then the end is rather unsatisfactory.

    Disappointing * Spoiler Alert*
The first 2 books were awesome! The third book started off sort of confusing me and I kept waiting for it to get better but it didn't. I figured I was already invested so I bought the final book. I felt like it picked up the rhythm of the first 2 books pretty quickly and was glad I purchased it. By the end of the book I was lost. She loved Byron, then possibly started to develop feelings for Matt, then wanted to go away with Jared with Matt dead on the floor and the Byron thing supposedly sitting chained in the corner?!?! And.... was the bad guy only pretending to be Jared to get her to go with him willingly or was it really Jared? Then there is Dakota, the only one with any sense at all, just gets left behind? So basically Lucy was incredibly fickle, stupid, and a crappy best friend.
    Outdoes Twilight
This entire series was a fast, easy read. I finished a book a day and read the entire thing in four days. And I was pleasantly surprised. It was much better than I expected, spooky, eerie, very sad in spots, and (although I'll probably get some negative comments for this) in my opinion, it was superior to Twilight.
I'd put off reading any of Ms. Cusick's books because I thought they'd be nothing but teenage fluff, like the above-mentioned Twilight, but it was actually quite a bit darker, and I was glad.
It took me a while, however, to warm up to it. In the first book, I found the plot cliche: girl loses her family and must go to live with distant relatives she barely knows, and spooky things ensue...I've read it a hundred times.
I also didn't care for Lucy at first. She seemed a little bit spineless, prone to breaking down into hysterics at the drop of a hat and constantly whining that nobody understands her. (Who in this world feels understood?)
But by the third and fourth book, Lucy was finding her strength and her courage, and I was happy to see it. I also loved the character of Dakota Montana, who dresses like a thrift store waif and in her own words, (believes in everything supernatural). She's the best friend who's there when needed and forgives in a heartbeat.
