Wie es zu Ende gehen sollte, weiß man nicht so genau, ebenso wenig, wann mit den Vorarbeiten begonnen worden ist. Büchners Woyzeck ist etwas Halbfertiges, es strebt nach individueller Vollendung. Das macht es umso spannender, sich damit auseinanderzusetzen. Woyzeck, der brave Soldat, muss seinem Hauptmann die tägliche Rasur angedeihen lassen und das mit der gebotenen Sorgfalt. Es mache sich nicht gut, mit Blessuren aufzutreten, sagt der, das spräche kaum für einen untadeligen Lebenswandel.

Der Ranghöhere nimmt die Gelegenheit zum Anlass dafür, weitere Distanz zu schaffen. Sein Untergebener lasse sich zwar im Prinzip auch nicht tadeln, er sei wie er von Grund auf gut, doch davon abgesehen dumm und auch nicht unbefleckt, was die Moral angeht. Zum Beweis führt er mangelnde meteorologische Kenntnisse an und den Umstand seines außerhalb der Ehebande geborenen Kindes. Woyzeck weiß indes, Tröstliches aus der Bibel zu zitieren und hält es wie Bertolt Brecht. Möglichst tugendhaft zu sein, meint er, müsse finanzierbar bleiben.

Im Himmel, sollte er dahin kommen, wäre er wohl einer von denen, die den Donner rühren. Damit endet die erste Szene, und die Fronten sind abgesteckt. Woyzeck ist schon ein armer Tropf, der sich jedoch zu helfen versteht. Doch er muss unablässig kämpfen.
