    Title: Here's the Bright Side
Subtitle: Of Failure, Fear, Cancer, Divorce, and Other Bum Raps
    Author: Betty Rollin
    Narrator: Pam Ward
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-25-07
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 6 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Rollin writes of lessons learned and happiness gained: about men, friends, power, and more. She tells us about fair - and foul - weather friends, the usefulness of fear, and the positive outcomes of failure, divorce, and widowhood, as well as her own evolving joy as a cancer survivor. Poignant, timely, and universal, Here's the Bright Side is a unique and inspirational view of how people often find surprising light in darkness.
    Critic Reviews:
"[Rollin] eschews Pollyanna-ish advice for personal examples and research findings on people who've endured tragedies, weather-related upheavals, and aging issues....Excellent." (Library Journal) "While there is nothing new about finding a silver lining in a cloud, this thought is only comforting if it comes from a credible source; and here, Rollin's voice is comforting....Rollin is not religious....but she is relentlessly positive." (Publishers Weekly)

    Good news..
Here's the bright side: If you've ever dreamed of writing a book, but had absolutely nothing to say, this book will be a huge inspiration for you. The author prattles on and on in a series of unrelated and boring antic dotes, all the while quoting other authors and their books. I agree that it can be uplifting to hear other survivors success stories, but this is more like a list of people she has known or heard about who have been fortunate enough to overcome their obstacle and learn from it. They aren't even complete stories.
I have tried repeatedly to listen to this book, but have yet to get more than half way through it. At one point the author relates how she was fired from Vogue magazine, not because she was a bad writer, but because she "didn't know anything". She still doesn't. And her style is annoying.

    Satisifed Customer
Wonderful book. Arrived promptly, in excellent condition, affordable price! I would purchase from seller again. So sorry for such a late review!
YO OPRAH, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
Joe Massengale is a remarkable man who's led an extraordinary rags-to-riches-to-rags-back-to-riches life...from fearing for his own poverty-stricken life in the days of lynchings, to working his way up to owning his own race horses in Hollywood. His biography alone would make an inspiring, thoroughly readable book -- but having it woven through such valuable lessons, and memorable object lessons, all in service of passing on hard-earned down-to-earth wisdom on something as crucial as character-development...well it makes this book all the more important. And how refreshing to have a "good for you" book that's so well-written! David Clow not only writes elegantly, but knows how to get out of Joe Massengale's way to let his subject's own distinctive voice come through clearly. That Joe Massengale happens to be African-American makes me wonder why Oprah Winfrey hasn't devoted an hour to him yet, but let me hasten to add - his lessons are UNIVERSALLY relevant. You do NOT have to be any particular color to "get" this wisdom, nor to need it. Turning children into responsible adults is the hardest and most important job in the world, no matter your color, age, station in life...or gender. Yes, I'm saying even moms can get something valuable from ths book. So could kids, single adults, you name it - anyone with an interest in the being, and shaping, productive, respected members of society. Only perfect people need not learn these lessons, and if you think you're perfect you need this book more than anyone! Need I mention, as I glance at the calendar, that this would make a HECK of a Father's Day gift?

    random opinions about animals
What would have made Animals and Other Stories better?
If any of it were actually based on facts about animals
Would you ever listen to anything by Jay Allison again?
    Probably not.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I was annoyed and incredulous. This book's stories have nothing to do with facts or truths about animals. It is a hodge-podge of mostly unqualified people giving you opinions of what they think animals are like in ridiculously melodramatic language. (As an example, there was a super long drawn out story where some lady went to a slaughterhouse and heard the animals telling her that they were glad they were going to slaughtered so they could be eaten by her...????) If you want to hear a bunch of randos give you their impressions of how animals are in their heads, by all means purchase this book. If you actually want to learn anything interesting or real about animals, I suggest that you purchase something by an author like David Attenborough.
    Not bad but not good
These are a batch of VERY short radio spots, a few minutes each. They were marginally interesting, but unimpressive.
    unusual, touching
Each piece in this collection is fulfilling on several levels: emotional, structural, descriptive, and thought-provoking. Each story's way of being told (as either meditation or reflection or monologue or dream) matches the mood and atmosphere of the particular animal in that story. I particularly liked the memories of the older horse, the reasoning and understanding of cattle, and the prayer of the man who provided a home for orphan cats.

    Riepilogo Editore:

    Publisher: Made for Success
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
How can we evolve through adversity and change our lives? It is one of life's great questions. In Evolving Through Adversity: How to Overcome Obstacles, Discover Your Passion, and Honor Your True Self, author Seconde Nimenya answers the above question and demonstrates that the best way to overcome adversity is to go through it. Through her own life story, Seconde explains how to apply this theory by what she calls the RRU (reflect, rectify, and unite) model. Her personal credo to evolve through all adversity and achieve any desired outcome is to take time to reflect on who you are, then assess your situation, rectify what you don't like, and reinforce or unite what you do like.
Seconde details her life story, from walking hundreds of miles to school across mountains to being struck by lightning and having to hide in the bushes when a civil war erupted in her native country. Then she underwent culture shock as she came to North America and realized how her cultural background both helped and hindered her in evolving into the woman she wanted to be.
Seconde's story serves as a source of reflection for listeners about their own lives. Listeners of this book will be inspired and empowered first to achieve their personal peace and then to help create peace in their communities and their world. They will learn how they can evolve past adversity; forgive themselves and others; and discover, love, and honor who they are.

    A ride through life
In this book full of highs and lows of the author's life, Seconde Nimenya brings us on a journey through childhood, early adulthood, marriage, immigration and culture shock. On the way, we (along with her) are confronted with hardships of life and the realities of two worlds apart not only in terms of distance but also culture, lifestyle and times. At the end we really get to understand what it is to Evolve Through Adversity.
    The connectedness of experience
It was a great pleasure to read Seconde's book. I especially enjoyed reading about her growing up in Burundi. I could also relate to the struggle of balancing work and family, and of moving and living in a foreign country (Norway and England for me).
    Thought provoking read
Seconde does a wonderful job describing her life in Africa as a child then moving to the west as a young adult with a new family. She explores the cultural differences as a woman that she encounters and her journey trying to find her self along the way. She has added thought provoking questions at the end of each chapter to help you relate her story to your own.
    Five Stars
I loved the inspirational way Seconde told her story and at the same time involved the reader to reflect.
New Book Tells Inspiring Story of Migration and Self-Realization
Seconde Nimenya has lived a fascinating multicultural life on two continents, and now she shares her story in her part-memoir, part self-help book Evolving Through Adversity. She even reveals in the book that she once had an addiction to self-help books, so I'm not surprised she wrote one, although it is different than any I've ever read before because her experiences differ so much from most American self-help authors.
Seconde was born and grew up in Burundi, a place I daresay most readers have never heard of--I admit I hadn't.

Length: 10 hrs and 30 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-08-16
    Publisher: moloney minds ltd
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The Gardens that Mended a Marriage offers the promise of paradise. It tells the story of how the writer and her husband, an architect, built a contemporary Moorish house on the top of a mountain and created a Persian garden, following the recipe laid down in the Koran for a paradise on earth.
Except it wasn't as easy as that. The land slipped down the mountain, the neighbors sued, the town hall went into paralysis and wouldn't allow them to finish the house. The Spanish builder turned out to be incompetent, the lawyer disinterested and the project manager seriously ill. In between times, she visited gardens all over the world for ideas and tended her precious vegetable patch in north London and waited. Through all this, they argued, made up, disagreed about the garden, argued again, invested a lot of money and almost gave up.
But over the years they came to understand that a significant shift happens in a relationship when you let go. It was the creation of the garden that taught them. Nature will allow you to sculpt her land, nurture her plants and take control only if you agree to her conditions. So it is with a marriage. You can fight human nature only to a certain extent. It's a trade-off. Accepting that fact is the real recipe for a paradise on earth.
Dr Karen Moloney is a business psychologist, leadership coach and a futurist. She travels the world meeting remarkable business people and helping them become even more remarkable. At least, that's her day job. But by night, she's a writer.
She has written a novel, a business book, a funny self-help book about guilt written with her sister called I Should Shag More, and this one - gardening as a metaphor for marriage.

Funny, witty, sometimes sad story about gardens and relationships - and people who create something special for both. Maloney's descriptions of gardens all over the world make me want to dig up my own plot and start over. The book is inspiring and fun.

    Publisher's Summary:
Not every face of breast cancer has laugh lines and graying hair....
Currently, in the United States alone, nearly 250,000 women under age 40 are living with breast cancer. This year, approximately 11,000 women under age 40 will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and close to 1,300 will die. For women in their 20s and 30s, being diagnosed with breast cancer is a vastly different experience than for their older counterparts.
I'm Too Young considers how breast cancer affects young women's lives: their career goals, health insurance coverage, career changes, education, and shifting work/life priorities. It shows us women dating during treatment and after, coming to terms with their altered bodies and sexuality, and making decisions about breast reconstruction. It tells the stories of a young mother explaining her diagnosis and treatment to her young daughter, a woman deciding whether to risk becoming pregnant after fighting the disease, and one determining whether to have her daughter tested for the breast cancer gene. And it looks at women struggling to gain strength from their religions in the face of spiritual crisis.
Through the gift of shared experiences, freelance writer Beth Leibson-Hawkins offers comfort and companionship, and brings hope to a younger generation of breast cancer survivors.
