    Publisher's Summary:
In the midst of a wartime evacuation, a British airplane crashes on or near an isolated island in a remote region of the Pacific Ocean. The only survivors are boys in their middle childhood or preadolescence. Two boys - the fair-haired Ralph and an overweight, bespectacled boy nicknamed "Piggy" - find a conch, which Ralph uses as a horn to convene all the survivors to one area. Ralph is optimistic, believing that grown-ups will come to rescue them but Piggy realizes the need to organize: ("put first things first and act proper"). Because Ralph appears responsible for bringing all the survivors together, he immediately commands some authority over the other boys and is quickly elected their "chief". He does not receive the votes of the members of a boys' choir, led by the red-headed Jack Merridew, although he allows the choir boys to form a separate clique of hunters. Ralph establishes three primary policies: to have fun, to survive, and to constantly maintain a smoke signal that could alert passing ships to their presence on the island and thus rescue them. The boys establish a form of democracy by declaring that whoever holds the conch shall also be able to speak at their formal gatherings and receive the attentive silence of the larger group.
Jack organizes his choir into a hunting party responsible for discovering a food source. Ralph, Jack, and a quiet, dreamy boy named Simon soon form a loose triumvirate of leaders with Ralph as the ultimate authority. Upon inspection of the island, the three determine that it has fruit and wild pigs for food. The boys also use Piggy's spectacles to create a fire. Though he is Ralph's only real confidant, Piggy is quickly made into an outcast by his fellow "biguns" (older boys) and becomes an unwilling source of laughs for the other children while being hated by Jack. Simon, in addition to supervising the project of constructing shelters, feels an instinctive need to protect the "littluns" (younger boys).

I loved the idea of this plot
I loved the idea of this plot: three archetypes of man find a world of women and fight to keep their unsuppressed machismo and misogyny intact. It is such a cool book and such a cool idea. Will definitely get around to drawing some fan art.
A riveting rediscovered 100-year-old feminist science fiction novel that reads like it was written today
This is a lively page-turner, and the writer's voice is so contemporary it's hard to imagine this was written 100 years ago. This is really a fascinating novel about a land ruled by women. It's funny and very entertaining, told from the point of view of three male explorers who trek into this land and undergo many amusing misadventures.
Very interesting treatise on how a society of women would evolve...
Of course one has to have a moment of suspension of belief to accept the concept of their motherhood in a society without men, but what a great work on how men view women, their supposed adoration for the 'weaker' sex, yet at the same time, their disgust for the very ideal of women they created. Would a society of only women evolve into a near perfect civilization which strives together for the benefit of the whole, that evolve so they think in terms of 'we' instead of 'I'? A national identity so intuned, so benevolent that every thought of every person was the advancement of every generation to reach a higher 'goodness'. The creation of a perfect culture which has conquered almost every problem faced by modern society, would a community of women separated from any contact with men be able to create that...interesting concept and fascinating reading when put in a fictional story of three men, one a macho blockhead, another a soft idealist and finally the anthropologist who stands as the man in the middle. How would these three very different men survive in such an accomplished society? Great story. Word of warning, there is an abrupt ending, leading of course into a sequel, so prepare oneself for that. Also, it is helpful to remember this was written by a woman who died in the 1930s. Society was indeed different then than now, but surprisingly not as much as one would think.
    Five Stars
    if only.....
    Herland - an interesting concept
Out on adventure, three young men in a time period not defined but after planes were on the scene, crash and discover a civilization unknown to the outside world - a group without men for 2000 years. Somehow they evolved in ways unexplainable and succeed in bearing children. These three men come to know three women and marry them with different degrees of success. Way far out concepts, yet interesting to consider how women might succeed in learning to live in harmony without the tension of men.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-10-17
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Classics, American Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
A portrait of Colonel Pyncheon looms over his family in the house of the seven gables - an ominous reminder of the curse he left behind over a century ago.
The shadow still falls over the New England mansion's current residents, siblings Clifford and Hepzibah - unless they can expose the one secret that offers an escape from the hex.
Set in seventeenth- and nineteenth-century Massachusetts, Nathaniel Hawthorne's gothic tale was inspired by the Salem Witch Trials and by a family home that still stands today. With the town's horrific history, the house became, for Hawthorne and his readers, an important metaphor for ancestral burden.

    The House of Secrets
This was for me a unusual read, I enjoyed it but yet at the same time it was a up hill road of twists and turns. Some leading no where. Such a plot! Not too give way the ending but that was the very best part of the whole book. My heart was so wrenched with the family for the troubles they had to go through. The love that was felt by them as a family was the deepest that can be had. It made it all worth it. As a classic this is well worth the read.
    Great--for fans of Hawthorne classics!
This is another good Hawthorne book. It builds the characters
descriptively so your mind's eye is there. It gives a peak
of how things were in that era. Written in his usual,
exquisite, expressive use of the English language.
    Worth the read so far
Purchased for our daughters AP Lit course - it has great use of vocabulary and type is large enough to annotate side margins. Message if you have specific questions about story line as she has not completed reading as of yet...
    Better the second time.
I read this when I was in my teens in junior high and am cycling back through the classics in my mid 60's this was better than I remember and the plot and pacing was amazing considering when it was written. Can't beat it if you have never read it.
    Good book
Will make you realise how stale and limited language has become these days. Hawthorne had a vocabulary and used it. Its an old book but a good story.!

    Publisher's Summary:
"Government 'help' to business is just as disastrous as government persecution.... The only way a government can be of service to national prosperity is by keeping its hands off." (Ayn Rand)
The seminal events in Ayn Rand's life occurred when she witnessed firsthand the Bolshevik Revolution and the ultimate Communist victory as a teenager. Rand's experience with the maelstrom of this revolutionary zeal and cultural breakdown greatly contributed toward the formation of Rand's philosophy of objectivism, individualism, and antireligious ideas. During her last year of high school, she was introduced to the history of the United States and immediately decided to make America her model of what an ideal society should look like. Rand came to the United States as a young woman for a visit in 1925 and, as fate would have it, she never returned to Russia.
When Rand first embarked on writing The Fountainhead, her first major literary success, she intended to deliver a book that incorporated her philosophies on 20th century society while telling a story that was less politically inclined than her initial novel, We the Living, which was set in postrevolutionary Russia and promoted her tough, unwavering stand against communism. In The Fountainhead, Rand took many of the seeds of individualism that she sowed in We the Living, enhancing and heightening them into her new book's dominant theme. The Fountainhead clearly represents Rand's disdain for and rejection of the notion of collectivism, and holds not merely individualism but also objectivism, a philosophy attributed to the writer herself, as components critical to man's ideal state.

    do not buy
The cover of this book is made to look like you are getting the actual books of the Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. It is neither of those books. In .small writing it has the rest of the title. This is someone's published book report on these books, and a mediocre one at that.

A classic tale of doomed romance, Longfellow's classic epic poem reminds us that man's inhumanity to man and refugees have been with us many centuries. The story of how the Cajuns came to Louisiana is only a part of this moving, evocative poem. Two lovers separated by a cruel fate stand against a canvas of America in the making.
    Members Reviews:
    Ethnic cleansingâ
âof sorts. I recently read Kate ChopinâsThe Awakening (Dover Thrift Editions)which, in part, depicted the French influence on the culture and society in Louisiana at the end of the 19th Century. Although I had once briefly worked in the northern part of Louisiana, several decades ago, I was only vaguely aware how this French influence occurred, with hazy notions connected with the expulsion of the âAcadiansâ from Canada. I knew of this poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, which commemorates the event, and finally decided to read it.
There was an expulsion of approximately 12,000 descendants of French settlers from the Maritime Provinces of Canada over a decade, from 1755-64. This occurred during what is most often called the French and Indian Wars in North America. The expulsion was conducted by English authorities. Most interestingly, NONE of those expulsed were moved to Louisiana. The first wave were moved to the original 13 colonies; and since that was considered a failure, the second wave was moved to England and France. It was those who went to the latter who were the ones who migrated on to Louisiana.
Wordsworth wrote this poem almost a century after the original event. He wrote the poem in dactylic hexameter, which was the âepicâ poem form used by Greek and Roman poets. The form means that each line is composed of six âfeet,â ideally composed of one long and two short syllables each. Who amongst us knows that meaning without looking it up? I might have once known that for the high school test, but it was forgotten within 24 hours.
The poem is set in Grand-Pré, which is on the central west coast of modern day Nova Scotia. Wordsworth depicts an idyllic pastoral scene, with sturdy Norman homes dotting the landscape. Evangeline is the daughter of Benedict Bellefontaine, wealthiest farmer, age 70, my coeval. She has eyes only for Gabriel, son of Basel Lajeunesse, the blacksmith. They become engaged, and then the English show up, about half way through the poem, with their expulsion orders (the justification for such an order is never given in the poem.) Benedict never leaves his native land; Gabriel and Evangeline are split up in the confusion of the evacuation, and placed on different ships. Both are briefly in Louisiana at the same time, but not together. A ânew and improvedâ pastoral scene is depicted, as Longfellow says: âHere no hungry winter congeals our blood like the rivers; Here no stony ground provokes the wrath of the farmer.â Through time and space the two protagonists wander, across America with Evangeline often just a few days behind Gabriel, never quite catching him, until (gulp!) old age, in Philadelphia, of all places.
This edition introduced me to a British publisher called âForgotten Books.â They have almost a half million titles in print. They reproduce long out-of-print works. Regrettably they provided no details on the original edition. Furthermore, the reproduction is of so-so quality, a criticism I saw in a review of one of a book on Calculus, by Phillips.

    Melville fantastic, spanish edition disaster.
The spanish edition has mistakes, errors, and was difficult to read and understand.
This is not a good Spanish edition
This is not a good Spanish edition! Actually is a very very bad edition...

Very good version for Kindle app on Android
The stories are excellent. The kindle version (which I got for free - thanks Amazon!) worked very well. I did find a few spelling errors towards the end of The Mysterious Island, but overall, both books were very well adapted to the kindle app on my phone.

    Great Bedtime Reader
All of the Illustrated Chosen Classics are great bedtime readers. My wife sits in the hall of the children's bedrooms and reads these stories to them at bedtime. The difference between these books and the traditional novels is that these stories move very fast. My son, in particular, will hear one of these abridged classic novels and, if he likes it, will then read the full unabridged version on his own. Kind of gives our kids a taste of the classics without having to start reading a really large and sometimes overwhelming looking book. My son is 10 and my daughter is 15. We have about 30 of these types of books in our library.
    A Classic Still
Like many people of my age (62), I read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as a child because at that time it was widely perceived to be a child's or young adult's book. This is unfortunate as it is not nor has it ever been directed at the young. In my rereading I discovered for the first time why it is still called the original great American novel. Huckleberry, like Twain, is opinionated and perceptive. His narration and point of view drive the novel forward. Rather than relegate this work to the children's shelves or castigate it as racist, folks should embrace this novel for what it is, a bildungsroman that shows the growth of a country as well as the growth of its young protagonist.
It captivated a classroom full of surly teens
I teach English, and the junior year in North Carolina is devoted to American literature. I approached Huck Finn with no small amount of trepidation because of Twain's use of vernacular. I ran into the same problem with "Their Eyes Were Watching God" and solved that by listening to Ruby Dee's audio recording, which students loved. I purchased this recording of Huck Finn, and it was to die for fabulous. Students read along in their books as we listened to the recording, and it helped bring the characters and the story alive for them. They laughed when I hoped they would laugh, and they understood the novel so much better by being able to listen to it. This recording was invaluable.
Reading this book as an adult is a whole different ...
Reading this book as an adult is a whole different experience. I'm fairly sure the versions I read as a child were watered down.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Beautiful and Damned tells the story of Anthony Patch, a 1910s socialite and presumptive heir to a tycoon's fortune, and his courtship and relationship with his wife Gloria Gilbert. It describes his brief service in the Army during World War I, and the couple's post-war partying life in New York, and his later alcoholism. Gloria and Anthony's love story is much more than just a couple falling in love. Their story deals with the hardships of a relationship, especially when each character has a tendency to be selfish.

Lordy. Two people, who have no business getting married, end up falling in love with each other
Lordy. Two people, who have no business getting married, end up falling in love with each other. Anthony is a dull intellectual and Gloria is a capricious flapper, and they somehow manage to fool each other and themselves that they are meant to be. And naturally, their worse instincts make it into a nightmare marriage. (To be fair, I don't want to say whose fault it is...but it's definitely a lot more Anthony's fault).
And that's not even considering the wide assortment of friends, 1920's young aristocrats meandering away their lives until they're 29 and looking in the mirror, and finally notice that they aren't immortal.
The book is just shy of being a great book. But the first half is thunderously slow-paced, a little too on-the-nose about how much Anthony and Gloria putter around. And the second half...there's a lot to unpack there, but I'm not sure if the conclusion is executed well enough to earn the ending. But it's clear that Fitzgerald was well on his way of refining his style and themes of empty decadence and tragic romance.
...And it's also clear that Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda had issues. Write what you know, I guess.
Great Fitzgerald as always, The Audio book read by William Dufris makes it even better
This is by far one of my favorite books of all times, and having listened to the Audio Book read by William Dufris, I enjoyed it even more. His voice talents are amazing and he really immerses the reader/listener into the book.
The Sad tale of being the spoilt brat of life, is beautifully portrayed and complemented by Fitzgerald's writing style. I'll definitely re-read this book again in a few years times
    Absolutely touched
The beautiful part of this book with the short stories is amazing. I loved every story R.M Drake wrote. Each spoke to me in a different way, as if I could relate it to my own life. I felt moved and touched by each and every short story. Some reviews complain they didn't like the stories at all, but in my opinion, I couldn't have enjoyed any other just like these. I will never forget these stories I have read and I hope he makes another book similar. I rather read them than his quotes/poetry any day. Hands down, one of his best books I've read this far.
This book is a real disappointment. The novel must be in the public domain ...
This book is a real disappointment. The novel must be in the public domain because this volume is soul-less, lacks any publication history, except that of the Seller. Even the cover illustration is inappropriate. I expected a high quality paper back with the appropriate publication history and perhaps some remarks about Fitzgerald and the book itself.
