An indictment of slavery from a viewpoint of mora ambiguity

Melville's prose is ornate and difficult to read, yet the story is gripping. An American merchant ship, the Bachelor's Delight, sailing up the west coast of South America encounters the San Dominick, a Spanish slave ship that is obviously in distress. Wanting to give assistance, the ship's captain, Amasa Delano, boards the ship and tries to find out from the captain, Benito Cereno, what has happened. What he sees -- an absence of ship's officers and of most of the crew, and Black who are freely moving about the deck of the ship without being confined to the lower decks astonishes him. Cereno's woeful story makes no sense to Delano, but Cereno's Black servant, Babo, will not leave him alone to ask further questions. The pacing of this book is masterly as Delano's suspicions grow and he gradually becomes aware of the grisly events aboard the San Dominick. The book is told from Delano's viewpoint -- and as such is morally ambiguous from the modern reader's point of view.

Good Short Novel!

If you like Melville, but don't have time for one of his longer works (Moby Dick, etc.) this might be just the one for you! This edition of the kindle-book is okay. You know how some of them are cheap and full of typos; this one is not. Give it a try! You might like it. It has a suspenseful story line.

a sad commentary on the institution of slavery

This lesser known novel of the sea by Herman Melville offers a glimpse into the slave trade as it occurred in the New World a couple of centuries ago. It is based on a true event, a rebellion on a slave ship in the waters off South America. The "hero" is a decidedly clueless, but good-natured ship's captain; the "villains" are slaves who try to win their freedom while at sea but do not have the skills to pilot the ship to freedom. A massive deception is at the center of the plot, but its success is not entirely convincing. Still, something like this apparently happened, and it's a sad tale in a sad history of the colonializing of the Americas and the human practice of slavery. Melville specializes in epic sad tales.

What is reality?

A combination of a Stevenson yarn and a house-of-mirrors, B. Cereno will hold your interest as the sad story unfolds. What is real and what is merely perception? A fascinating study of a fictional relationship, this is weird but good reading.

The Brilliant Satire Of Twain

"The Gilded Age" was my first Kindle book. I read it along with a history of the Progressive Movement, which was enjoyable and useful for placing myself in late 19th-century America. Twain created a satirical tragedy that masterfully encapsulates the excess of the Gilded Age, and the distractions that drove our entire society into a ditch. It's brilliance is manifested by its relevance to our world today, almost 140 years after its publication. The story describes a fundamental aspect of human nature that we all need to examine more closely.

Mark Twain is such an American treasure; I wish he had a contemporary counterpart.

Love Tevis in general

Though this "format" of brash youngster going against the King/establishment has become a bit cliche in structure (see all Tom Cruise movies where he plays same character repeatedly) I still enjoyed this early Tevis. It is a classic and though it is rather linear and stripped down it works. There are a few surprises still. Tevis knew what he was doing and gets better in next novels. There are hints of more mythic elements in this with the lame girl and limping janitor hinting at some wasteland motif, but he doesn't dwell on or develop this until his more poetically and symbolically written Man Who Fell to Earth and Mockingbird. And the film of this, classic as it is and well done, changes some things, one of which I can understand whether i liked it or not, and the other which I think detracts from one of his main themes at the end. You don't need to know pool to enjoy it and I was unfamiliar with a few items, but it is still well written and drew me to research a couple things. There are a few great videos on youtube with Willie Mosconi who I believe was a consultant on the film, and Minnesota Fats who was not real, but claim-jumped and moniker taken by New York Fats I believe. In either case good novel.

The sound of the train on the tracks near the pond reminds him that society and technology are a stone's throw away, and the noises lead him to contemplate the benefits of living away from the constant pressures of social interactions and expectations. This philosophical narrative includes a sprinkle of humor, but the main focus is on living life to the fullest and on appreciating the world outside material needs.

In the final chapter of this book, you'll find an essay titled "On the Duty of Civil Disobedience", in which Thoreau contends that people should not allow the government to control or limit their principals, and it's an individual's duty to stand up to and not comply with such attempts by the government. Thoreau was mainly inspired to write this piece due to his disgust with slavery and the Mexican-American War.

A Wonderful Classic!

Walden is Henry David Thoreaus account of living on Walden Pond in Massachusetts and reflecting on society and city life. Included in this edition is Thoreaus essay, On the Duty of Civil Disobedience, in which Thoreau examines the government, and argues that it is an individuals duty to challenge the governments decisions, a very good addition.

In Walden, Thoreau reflects on a solitary life he lived for two years, musing about animals, the plants he grows, and the sound of the train on the tracks. In doing so, Thoreau gained a deeper understanding of life and survival through studying all the nature around him.

In many ways his experiences can translate to peoples lives in today's society. It really gets you thinking about life and makes you think about and examine your own existence as it challenges its readers to challenge social norms. Overall this was a very well read book and great piece to add to your collection.

Last, let me say that the narrator was truly a delight to listen to with his clear articulation and charming British accent.
