    Magnificent!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend the audiobook of Du Bois' "Darkwater" to a friend because it is his best book. I love his "Souls of Black Folk," but "Darkwater" took me into the uncharted territory of Du Bois interweaving essays, poetry, and short stories. His standout proto-feminist essay "The Damnation of Women" is one of the earliest and greatest feminist essays by a man and in the short story "The Comet" Du Bois writes a science fiction story that is both political and entertaining. I highly recommend "Darkwater" as THE Du Bois book to give to friends.
What other book might you compare Darkwater to and why?
"Darkwater" has no other comparison. It is singular in a class by itself. It is even better than Hemingway's first book "Three Stories and Ten Poems." In "Darkwater," Du Bois is at the top of his game as a deep, creative thinker.
Have you listened to any of the narratorss other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to any of the five narratorss other performances before, but they did a masterful job in switching off to perform essays, stories, and poetry as if they were their own thoughts and words. I heard Du Bois' mind at work.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I want to listen to this book all in one sitting. It is deep, meandering, but with a sharp focus. It is not widely known that Du Bois wrote poetry and short stories. As a poet and short story writer myself, I cheered to read the little known work of this master writer.
    Any additional comments?
Do not stop at reading Du Bois' "The Souls of Black Folk." Read his "Darkwater" as well. If given a choice, I would choose "Darkwater" over "Souls." It is fun, creative, and political. I sense and grasp this man in his entirety when I listen to "Darkwater."
    Brilliant!
He was writing 100 years ago, but the brilliance of Du Bois is absolutely relevant today. Breathtaking work!
A look inside Mr. W.E.B Du Bois mind.
I enjoyed the book, A peek inside Mr. Du Bois thoughts. Worth your time
    Wonderful
DuBois essays are still startling relevant today. I really liked that each essay was read by a different person---it made it much easier to recognize the shifts in topic/essay. The only improvement I'd want is to have each essay dated so it's a little easier to discern what historical events sparked each essay.
    Stunning
A book I didn't know I needed in my life and yet one I don't think I could now live without.

    Title: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 33 votes
    Genres: Classics, American Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
The delirious 1925 Jazz-Age classic that no less an authority than Edith Wharton called "the great American novel".
If any American fictional character of the 20th century seems likely to be immortal, it is Lorelei Lee of Little Rock, Arkansas, the not-so-dumb blonde who knew that diamonds are a girl's best friend. Outrageous, charming, and unforgettable, she's been portrayed on stage and screen by Carol Channing and Marilyn Monroe, and has become the archetype of the footloose, good-hearted gold digger, with an insatiable appetite for orchids, champagne, and precious stones.
Here are her "diaries", created by Anita Loos in the Roaring Twenties, as Lorelei and her friend Dorothy barrel across Europe, meeting everyone from the Prince of Wales to "Doctor Froyd" - and then back home again to marry a Main Line millionaire and become a movie star. In this delightfully droll and witty book, Lorelei Lee's wild antics, unique outlook, and imaginative way with language shine.

A Girl Like I Loves This Book, Which Is An Audio Book
I can't say enough good of this novel. It is conscious of literary form the way Gertrude Stein's poetry is, and it is a biting and effervescent satire of sexual hypocrisies and gender objectification of the Jazz Age. McPhee writes a marvelous introduction, and the narrator is spot- on.
    Brava to all!
    Great story
This was an exciting discovery for me. Anita Loos, the author, has put into words something about men that remains true and funny to this day, over 80 years after first being published.
It tells stories on men and is also a great little history of the 1920's.
It is very funny and highly recommended.
The narrator is absolutely perfect for this book and I hope she does a lot more work for us.
Preferred book much over the movie
the book has a wonderful and beautiful ambience to it and is one of my favorite reads

    Wonderful Fun!
I truly enjoyed listening to Tarzan of the Apes. After sampling all the versions currently available I ended up choosing this version, narrated by Simon Prebble, and I am so glad I did. The narration was just perfect and my only disappointment was that he does not narrate the other books and I had to choose another narrator for book 2.
As for the book itself...it is a lot of fun. Edgar Rice Burroughs is becoming one of my favorite authors, having also enjoyed the John Carter books. Tarzan has a lot of different adventures and he doesn't meet Jane until well into the story...but EVERY adventure Tarzan has both before and after meeting Jane is interesting and fun to listen to. Due to the length...I was not able to listen to this all in one sitting but I REALLY wanted to and had a hard time turning it off.
The ending was rather sad and left me wanting more...so I have already downloaded and listened to the second book. You will not be disappointed in continuing this story if you enjoyed this first book.
Highly recommend for a fun adventure story.
    Excellent all around.
I'm very fussy about narration and this performer is as good as they get. I am not writing more because I'll die if I don't download book 2 immediately.
    Old world storytelling. True adventure!
The narrator is perfect. The prose is succinct yet expansive. The conjured imagery is beyond modern silver screen technology. Don't miss this.
    great potential--not realized
I tried to hang in there for the story--which had great potential--but the ending stuck.
    Loved it!
I downloaded this upon recommendation from my daughter. I loved it! My only regret is that I could not sit and listen from beginning to end without interruption. I HIGHLY recommend this particular narrator, he definitely brought the characters to life. He had me in stitches at times!

    Great
I enjoyed the narration. What a sad yet triumphant novel. Triumphant for Tom, Eva, St. Clair, George, Eliza, Ophelia, Topsy, the Shelbys, all rising above the fray and looking to God for ultimate redemption.
    life changing
a beautiful story of finding freedom and the cruelties of slavery. heart wrenching truth, but need to be heard by all.
    Classic, but not a masterpiece
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I always wanted to read this book. I chose the audible version simply due to time, and I am glad I listened and not read. Had I read the book, I would have put it down. The other reason to listen/read this book is because it, like many good books, are on the "banned book" list by those that like to control morality through bans, laws, and control.
In the end I was glad to finally check the book off.
What about Susie Berneiss performance did you like?
The performance was spectacular and flawless. I was pleasantly surprised at the flow of some of the words and terms that would make most people stumble and stutter.
Was Uncle Tom's Cabin worth the listening time?
I believe it was worth listening to. The accomplishment of saying the book is done overreaches the content however.
    Any additional comments?
The book is littered with Christianity references, which isn't offensive - despite not being a Christian - but is nonetheless a bit too much for my palate. Those that can't stand a few hours of those types of references might want to steer away.

In this unabridged production, you will walk with the young sailor Ishmael through the fires of life on a whaling vessel. Each character is brought to life by the narration of B.J. What made the experience of listening to Moby Dick the most enjoyable?
I've wanted to read this book in its entirety for years but couldn't commit the time. Listening to it however is a breeze.
What other book might you compare Moby Dick to and why?
Any of the big classics of the 19th century by the likes of: Dickens, Poe, Austen, Twain, etc.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    Too many to mention
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    Too many to mention
    Any additional comments?
This book is packed with significance and multiple layers. Everyone knows that. But what I didn't know is that it's actually a very easy read, full of light and humorous moments and fantastic adventure. Can't speak for the multiple other narrators whose versions are also available on Audible, but this reader, BJ Harrison, is terrific. Here's another thing: I just finished Donna Tartt's "The Goldfinch" Stylistically speaking, I'm sure she was influenced by Moby Dick.
    more than I expected
I've always wanted to Read Moby Dick but I procrastinated. this audio version was excellent and very well performed I would recommend it to anyone looking to finally listen to Moby Dick.
    Thar she blows!
If you could sum up Moby Dick in three words, what would they be?
Great American Classic! B.J. Harrison's reading is amazing. He uses a different voice for each character, infusing the characters with their own personalities, thus bringing them to life. He has an incredible vocal range from highest tenor to lowest bass.
Ishmael, clearly learned, but an outsider, tells the story of Ahab and his desire to wreak vengeance on the white whale that bit off his leg, thus "dismasting" him. Ishmael explores obsession, madness, violence, love and prejudice by making astute observations on the social mores of the times, which are surprisingly relevant today.
One passage that particularly struck me was when Ishmael sees, for the first time, the tatooed countenance of one of his shipmates, Quequeg, a South Seas native, and immediately deems him a savage. However, Ismael quickly realizes that in most ways, Quequeg is more civilized than many of his peers, and acknowledges his error by saying, "Ignorance is the parent of fear." Ismael and Quequeg become fast friends.
Some reviewers have been upset by the detailed descriptions of the killing and processing of the whales. While I'm an animal anti-abuse advocate, I feel that those passages are integral to the existentialist nature of the book. I thoroughly encourage you to listen to this unabridged, rather than an unabridged, edition. I can't imagine that the cutting of any passages would do anything other than alter the deeper meaning of the book.

Lacked substance pertaining to the story and persons written about.

It suggests buying the novel first then reading this, however I disagree, this is an excellent overview of the novel, it would be far better to have read this first, if not you would find Catcher in the Rye very hard to be involved in

    A favorite story, read horribly!
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It's a wonderful story, but this was painful to listen to.
What was one of the most memorable moments of An Old-Fashioned Girl?
I have always loved this book and even own a first edition of it. I have read it countless times and thought having the audiobook would be a treat. Boy was I wrong. All the fun moments that I loved reading myself were butchered by the narrators over dramatized reading.
What didnt you like about Anne Johnstonbrowns performance?
The reader, Anne Johnston Brown read the story with over exaggerated accents that completely distracted from the story. Her attempts at a country accent for Polly came across as uneducated and unintelligible. Same with Tom...not quite sure what she was going for there. There was no need to overdramatize such a simple, wonderful story. Very disappointed with the audiobook.
    Any additional comments?
So saddened by this performance. If this was someone's first exposure to this lesser known Louisa May Alcott treasure they would turn it off and not finish - missing out on the sweetness of wonderful love story.
    Sadness
I was so excited to find one of my favorite girlhood books available on Audible. Imagine my disappointment when the main character is made to sound more like Tammy Tell Me True. This is NOT a story about a hillbilly girl. I hope at some future time Audible will redo the book with a better narrator. Louisa Mae Alcott must be turning in her grave!
Love the story, don't care for the narration
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I absolutely love this story and have for years. I was disappointed in this narration - the reading is very mechanical with over-done drawls for the character voices that don't seem to fit the characters. I would absolutely recommend the story, but not this narration. I'm hoping to find a different narration that I like better.
What other book might you compare An Old-Fashioned Girl to and why?
Little Women. It's a comparison of an old-fashioned life of work and character compared to a frivolous, giddy "fashionable" life. The conclusion is similar to Little Women - showing the value of work and purpose in life.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I don't like the character voices. The drawling tones don't match my mental images for the characters. The narrator is so focused on enunciating every sound that the prose comes across as very mechanical. It's hard to get into the story because the reading is so measured and enunciated.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
I love the story, so I would go see it and hope that the dramatization lived up to my mental images.
    Any additional comments?
    Love the story.

    Title: Light Years
    Author: James Salter
    Narrator: Mark Boyett
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-10-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 62 votes
    Genres: Classics, American Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
This exquisite, resonant novel by PEN/Faulkner winner James Salter is a brilliant portrait of a marriage by a contemporary American master. It is the story of Nedra and Viri, whose favored life is centered around dinners, ingenious games with their children, enviable friends, and near-perfect days passed skating on a frozen river or sunning on the beach. But even as he lingers over the surface of their marriage, Salter lets us see the fine cracks that are spreading through it, flaws that will eventually mar the lovely picture beyond repair. Seductive, witty, and elegantly nuanced, Light Years is a classic novel of an entire generation that discovered the limits of its own happiness - and then felt compelled to destroy it.
    Members Reviews:
    A story of ordinary unhappiness
The book covers most of the life of Nedra and Ivri, a middle-class suburban couple with two children. They go through life withouth true values, intimacy and any deep sense of realities. There are hopes (no true passions) and rather trivial dreams (traveling to Europe, glamour , wealth, the sexy secretary..) ; their life fades away and ends almost like a candle that has burned out in the dark. Beautifully written, but unengaging , sad and,at times , almost boring.
    Elegant and elusive
I understand why other writers prize James Salters as a novelist. His scenes are vivid, evocative, and also oblique. There is a fascinating combination of detail given and fact withheld. Like Proust, he tells you a lot--but leaves out a lot as well. His prose recreates the feeling of certain friendships: colorful and engaging in the moment, and then somewhat puzzling in the aftermath. Yet the characters take on so much life in Salter's masterful hands. I greatly enjoyed "Light Years": arty but not arch, poetic but not self-indulgent--nothing goes on too long, everything proportionate. And no one writes similes like Salter. I reveled in it, but readers who are in search of straightforward, page-turning narrative could get frustrated This is literary fiction of the highest quality.
The narrator Mark Boyett, is very good in all the important ways--his rhythm is just right, he evokes the different characters (with their many foreign accents) nicely, and he doesn't moon over the lyrical sections. My only gripe is that he mispronounces foreign words from time to time, a pet peeve of mine: he says "restina" for "retsina," for example, puts the wrong accent on the Italian word "facile..." You get the picture. It's a small blemish on a fine achievement. Boyett found the right tonality for this delicate novel, which I would not have thought conducive to an audiobook.
    Old school unabashed alpha male
What made the experience of listening to Light Years the most enjoyable?
I love the spare writing style and the unabashed view into the mind of an uncompromised alpha male. It's a rare thing in good literature. Acceptable in MadMen days, but cowed in our age of gender equality. Glad that there is equality, but men and women are NOT the same.
What about Mark Boyetts performance did you like?
He reflected the personality of the main character very well.
Not my favorite purchase, not my worse...
Story was well written, but it bore me at times. Wasn't excited to find out the end. It took me a while to finish.
    Salter's fine poetic prose
IA beautiful melancholy novel of a certain time and place, well read.

    Great story and performance
This is a great horror story and FMH's performance is top-notch, giving the listener a great feel for the atmosphere of creepiness that Lovecraft intended.
    loving Lovecraft
great storytelling. wonderful narration. I can not wait to listen to the rest of lovecrafts works
    Recommended version
FNH gives a fantastic performance with great inflection, a pleasing voice, and with great diction.
    Good story, hard to listen
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes, this book is a must to anyone interested in Lovecraft's stories. But don't pick this version. There are free versions of this story on Librivox and I'm sure the performance is better. For this version, I had a hard time to follow the narrator.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Felbrigg Napoleon Herriot?
Anyone without the strong accent. I'm pretty fluent in English (I'm a Francophone from Montreal, Canada), but I was having a hard to fully understand what he said.
    Choose a different version.
Story is great but the narrator utterly fails to convey the tone and atmosphere of the book. Their are plenty of different versions with a different narrator. I would recommend one of them.

    Publisher's Summary:
Jack London, famed for his tales of adventure, was also a science fiction writer only rivaled in his time by the great H. G. Wells. The Iron Heel is a dystopia that would, in part, inspire George Orwell's masterwork, 1984. The Iron Heel tracks the rise of an oligarchic tyranny in the United States of America - and the doomed attempt to counter it. It is a novel more relevant today than it was in its day. Hear the "tale of capitalist oppression" that George Orwell couldn't stop thinking about.
    Members Reviews:
    Brilliant argument against oligarchy, okay...
    ... at best, novel.
Calling this a novel of ideas might be a misnomer, because I'm not sure there's a novel here. The characters resemble mouthpieces for political views more than they do real people. I understand the value of this book. Were it not for The Iron Heel, perhaps 1984 wouldn't have been written. So it's worth a read/listen in regards to its influence on Orwell and others. Isolated, taken solely on its on merits, I can't say it was a satisfying read.
Great story, terrible production and performance
The combination of poor production and terrible performance makes this interesting story barely listenable. sad
    Socialist Dogma
Not Jack London's best. More Wishful-thinking than a novel. and Easily the worst reading performance ever.
    Terrible narration.
This is a great book but I couldn't make it through the audio book due to the narration. When it's not flat and boring it's practically slurred in an attempt to sound "male."
