Another Winning Entry
The RANCHO DIABLO series has become one of my favorites. The three writers behind the books are Bill Cruder, James Reasoner, and the author of this tile, Mel Odom.
The trio has established a set of evolving characters as the steady Sam Blylock exerts his influence over the mostly young hands and when they get into trouble, he's always there to get to the bottom of it.
Here, nineteen year old Randy Post thinks the young saloon girl, Jessie, is just as in love with him as he is to her. We young men an be foolish. He comes into town with a head of steam looking for her and when sh ends up dead in the alley behind he bar, the bar owner gives him a shotgun butt to the back of the head. Marshal Tolliver finds testimonies and evidence at odds almost immediately. Several people reported hearing two shots, but Randy's gun had only been fired once and Jessie only had one bullet in her. Was there another shooter? Had to be, but no one had seen anybody.
Of course he has to arrest the boy and word is sent to Sam Blaylock.
Together they start looking into what's really going on.
Nicely paced tale as they uncover the real story and a nice action filled climax.
Recommended for all western lovers.
Short but sweet.
All the books in this series are short, but I have enjoyed them all. There are several reviews describing the details of the story so I won't go into that.
There is a new person in this one, a cousin of Randy's that prays and sings hymns a lot. Think you will find her interesting. The Sheriff and Sam and Tucker are their usual selves, righting wrong and doing good. Gabby i as usual also, just being Gabby. This book features more about Randy and how close the whole group on the Rancho Diablo are. They will fight for each other.
These are good short reads that don't take much time and are enjoyable. If you like Westerns I think you will like this series.

Very good writing. He keeps his characters alive and always part of the story. High on my list of Western writers--of course I always wanted to be a "cowboy."
Not your standard bank robbery!
Very nice addition to the "Rancho Diablo" series. Plenty of action and events leading up to action to satisfy most people. To really appreciate this story and the characters, reading some of the preceding books would be helpful (and enjoyable because they are all well worth reading for fans of Classic Westerns). This story is a short, but enjoyable read.
