Now he must find a way to best the beast and win back the love of his subjects. Edith (E.) Nesbit was a master at weaving imagination and real life into timeless fairy tales, with fantastic mythical creatures, princes and princesses, magic, and just the right touch of silliness. The Book of Beasts is the first in a series of fairy tales with a common theme: Dragons! For children from 5 to 95, these stories are not to be taken seriously. Let your imagination run wild!

    Great Story
This is an excellent book for all ages to enjoy. Beautiful story about a kid who open a magical book and lets out a dragon and the adventures begin from there. would recommend it to anyone. The narration was excellent.

    Enchanting Classic
This is a wonderful classic story that will delight children and adults who love magic, dragons and adventure. A child king with a magic book that has pictures of creatures that come to life is told in vivid detail by the narrator, each character has a distinct voice. I am looking forward to listening to more books read by Karen Krause. And I will be getting more of E Nesbit's dragon books for my grand kids.
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
    Cute atory.
Dragons and other beasts are let loose by the young king. Listen to t he story to see what damage they create and how the very young king makes everything right again. a cute short story.
Learning to Clean up your mess
A child king (Lionel) finds a book once owned by one of his distant grandsires. Like all good kids, he plays with it and sets a giant butterfly free. Hes warned not to do so again, but he releases yet another fantastical critter (a bird of paradise), and then another (the dragon!), which threatens his kingdom and he must make it right again. A hippogriff and manticore come into play too!
This was a great story for kids and fun for adults too. The very young Lionel knows he is king, but also knows he must answer to his nurse for any bad behavior. He will be sent to bed without supper if he misbehaves. This was a great point about the story because, while the king supposedly had great control over his kingdom and people, he also had to face the consequences of poor choices.
The story starts off with some harmful beasts that are really quite pretty to look at and enjoy. So at first, the consequences of messing around with this magical Book of Beasts is not readily apparent. But as the story continues, we find our young hero king in a world of trouble! I think this is great fun for both kids and adults and would be fine entertainment for a car ride.
Narration: Karen Krause did a great job having the perfect little boy voice for the child king. She also had a stern, yet amusing, voice for the kings nurse.
    Enraptured my son
OK, I'm going to write this review free-form. The questions posed by Audible are not fitting for me on this one. This unbiased review was in exchange for a reviewer copy. It's even more unbiased by the fact that I played it to its audience: my younger kids (ages 11 and 6). Both of them enjoyed the story quite a bit, though my 11 year old had heard it before.

An original tall tale about Angelica Longstrider, better known as Swamp Angel, the greatest woodswoman in Tennessee history.
    Members Reviews:
Fun Read! A frequent request at our house.
This book is terrific! I enjoy reading it out loud as much as my kids enjoy listening to it. It's over-the-top storyline always makes my 4 and 6 year old laugh. The pictures are different from other books and seem to hold their attention for the whole time it takes to read the page. Combining folklore and fantasy, it's a refreshing addition to our library. There is some reference to hunting, so if you're not into that this book may not be for you. For us, it's great! I dare you to try to read this story without falling into a serious southern accent!
The book is full of playful narrative such as:
"The newborn was scarcely taller than her mother and couldn't climb a tree without help."
"The settlers had abandoned their wagons and nearly all hope besides."
"Seems he tried the sweet approach and got licked in more ways than one."
    Tall Tales include Girls too!
Fun to read aloud and the kids love it! When teaching tall tales, you have to include this one! Most tales are about Paul Bunyon but this one is about a girl for a change! Pictures are great and the kids love it!
    Worth the Caldecott honor!
Zelinsky is no stranger to Caldecott awards, and his wonderful illustrations help to tell the story of Swamp Angel, the perfect date for Paul Bunyan. In fact, this is a bit of a Bunyan take off - the Angel has her Bear, and they battle across the country. As with all good folk tales, it has elements of truth in the end to support it's reality - the bear constellation, and the short grass prairie both reinforce that in the book's ending.
    Love this book!
I had this book as a kid && it was my favorite! I bought it for my son to read.

    Members Reviews:
    Adorable
I am big on celebrating the seasons and this is a wonderful addition to our books on Spring. The story is simple and leaves a lot to the imagination interpreting the illustrations. My 3.5 year old boy loves this book. As you can see on the cover there is a dog. We lhave a dog too and who doesn't love a dog and his boy?! Additionally there is a page where the boy is waiting for his seeds to grow and wonders why they are not growing. He thinks "...maybe it was the bears and all that stomping, because bears can't read signs that say things like "please do not stomp here-there are seeds and they are trying"." A few pages later the boy puts his ear to the ground and the illustrations show the layer below the ground so the reader can see an ant colony for example. Those are my boy's two favorite parts. Now we just have to get out to the yard and plant our own seeds!
    Looking for signs of spring
Good book for helping young children to notice the small changes that come ever so gradually with the shift from winter to spring. I mostly liked this book, but the text seems a little awkward. The real "story" is told by the pictures, however, which are wonderfully expressive in the most subtle yet enjoyable way. Each turn of the page brings very slight changes to the plants, animals and child's clothes, which are not expressly mentioned in the text. Older children will notice on their own. Very young children can be prompted to look, from page to page, at the boy's clothes, for instance, to see how he gradually sheds his winter wear. This is the best part of the book.
A beautifully illustrated, whimsical book about spring
We love the artwork of Erin Stead (A Sick Day For Amos McGee, Bear Has A Story To Tell, If You Want To See A Whale) so we were excited to buy this book. It did not disappoint. The illustrations are as beautiful as all of her other books, there are all these lovely little touches on each page (details like the dog planting a "bone" plant), and the text is like poetry rather than a straightforward story. If you are looking for a linear narrative-type story, then you will not enjoy this book. If you enjoy something that is a little bit off the beaten path - that also happens to have truly lovely artwork -- then this is the book for you. Our 3YO son loves this book and is always eager to point out his favorite little vignettes on each page.
    Great artwork
The story is simple, yet my kids at summer camp enjoyed the pictures and the story line. I was almost surprised by how much they have loved the book and enjoyed it.
    Boring text.
Was a boring book. Yes you need to wait for the seeds to grow..... yes you need to have patience to wait for them to sprout.... let alone fruit or flower.... but it could have been done in a far less boring way... I think it was the text that made it so boring not the artwork.

touching story of a young girl's love of deer
I wept when I read this book as a child. The book was a gift to me from my father twenty years ago, and I recently passed it to my best friend's daughter. It is the story of a young girl's love of the deer in the woods around her house, and of the community's love for this child and her family. It is a beautiful story, with beautiful, spare illustrations and I hope it will remain available to many generations.

Classic Sleeping Beauty true to the original tale
What did you love best about Sleeping Beauty?
Delightful telling of the beloved tale for those who love the original, richness of fairy tales. Details and characters differ from the all too familiar Disney retelling, lending freshness to the story.
Which character as performed by Kathy Verduin was your favorite?
The old woman with the spinning wheel has a wonderfully realistic tremor to her voice.
Sleeping Beauty sounds young, eager and perfectly imperious as a young princess would do.
    Any additional comments?
The narration of this book is clear and well paced for a young child. The tale does not "talk down" to children with overly simplistic vocabulary.

    No Burgess Included!
The title says this includes readings of Thornton W. Burgess, and the back says it has readings of these three Burgess books:
-- The Adventures of Peter Cottontail
-- The Adventures of Chatterer the Red Squirrel
-- The Adventures of Reddy Fox
But in fact none of those are included, and no Burgess readings are included at all.
It's fine if you're looking for the Beatrix Potter readings; that's all it has.
    A wordy classic
This book is full of short stories written by Beatrix Potter. I enjoyed reading the book very much. The stories were always adventurous. However, I found that the stories might be a little to lengthy for children to sit through (unless it is time for bed). The author of these stories is telling children that even though getting into mischief is fun at the time, it is not the best choice to make. Especially in the case of Peter Rabbit when his siblings get to eat gooseberries and milk and he has to eat beet stew because he is sick from getting into trouble. This shows children that there is a price for getting into trouble.
Excellent Collection Replaced by Larger One!
This excellent collection of five Beatrix Potter stories has obviously been replaced with the larger collection read by Claire Bloom, "Tales by Beatrix Potter." My school library owns the title viewed here, but we will undoubtedly upgrade to the newer collection whenever it's available in CD. Listening to Beatrix Potter in Bloom's crystal clear British accent is THE way to hear these delightful, and classic, stories!
    Be There Now!
Vanessa Maroney does a fantastic job of providing a trip into Olde Britain and the world of Beatrix Potter! Her lovely English accent just adds realism to the journey.

This is a story from the Just So Stories collection.
Here is the complete and unabridged collection of Rudyard Kipling's delightful Just So Stories, which he first told to his own children before setting them down on paper: How the Camel Got His Hump, How the Leopard Got His Spots, How the Elephant Got His Trunk, The Butterfly that Stamped, and many others. Written in the late 1800s and first published in 1902, these enchanting animals remain unforgettable, over 100 years later. To hear these magic fables by a master of children's literature is to enjoy them.
    Editorial Reviews:
The effervescent flute melody that opens this audiobook version of "The Crab That Played with the Sea", part of Rudyard Kiplings Just So collection of origin fables, immediately transports the listener to one of the legendary authors awe-inspiring fantasy worlds in this tale of how the actions of a rebellious crab explain why crustaceans shed their skin once a year.
The omnipotent Elder Magicians intimidating boom and the quivering desperation of Pau Amma, the monster crab, are captured with equal aplomb by the talented Geoffrey Palmer, who brings this charming childrens story vividly to life.
    Critic Reviews:
"This collection includes Kipling's 12 original Just So Stories narrated by Geoffrey Palmer, whose deep and resonant voice is perfectly suited to the tales. It is satisfying to hear the stories as they were meant to be told - aloud." (School Library Journal)
