Completely loved this third book in Geri Schear' elegantl series about Holmes, Watson, and their friend, Lady Beatrice!!
Excellent, riveting adventure! I loved this third book of the Sherlock, Watson, and Lady Beatrice series from Geri Schear and resented having to take time for sleep. It was either that or - doze off while reading the Kindle edition on my PC - fall face first into my keyboard.
Drivingly intense, relentlessly energetic, and exhausting thrilling Return to Reichenbach is far more than I had expected. It moves up to #2 as my favorite in the series as the complete embodiment of ACD's consulting detective is captured in his effort to capture the fiend and haunting menace called the Scorcher. Tension abounds and all characters are captured beautifully. No matter which chapter or person, whether friend or foe, all were extremely well-done.
I loved the reality and detail of Geri's description and characters; plus I look forward to Holmes monograph on surface streets London and its boroughs. As yet I haven't gotten an image of Lady Beatrice; however, it is easy to envision younger versions of Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwick for her leading men, with Christopher Lee as Mycroft via "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes".
Only once was I taken out of the story, which was when Holmes met Bradstreet and they stood in front of 221B Baker Street to decide upon a destination, then Holmes entered the officer's "car" to go there with the policeman.
As a person who understands the language of many generations and centuries in London, it took a couple minutes to recapture 'RfR's' words because my mind had wandered to the police of that era driving Mini-Coopers or Vauxhalls. Possibly, Sherlock, John, and Beatrice would have chosen black models, if colors were available. Sorry for the nonsense, but an accidental misnomer can take a person far out of the story. : )
Holmes in Danger . . . .
This is the third of three (so far) books featuring Sherlock Holmes and the woman identified as his âwifeâ, Lady Beatrice. This adventure finds Holmes moving from Dartmoor to Ireland to Reichenbach, as the title indicates. Once again, Ms. Schear shows that sheâs a wonderful storyteller.
As I mentioned in my review of the first Lady Beatrice volume, âA Biased Judgementâ, I disagree with the notion that Holmes and Lady Beatrice are actually married. He respects her, and he may even have feelings for her, but the actual marriage is a construct of Ms. Schear, and those parts related and referring to the marriage have been added to the original text by Editor Schear.
There is a long history of constructing romantic relationships for Holmes â see my review of âA Biased Judgement for more extensive information about this, as well as how I rationalize acceptance of the accurate parts of the narratives, while explaining away the parts that have been added by later editors.
