What a treat - a new Bryant and May

Wonderful to have the latest Bryant and May on Audible - the two aged detectives who began together in the 40's and are still solving crimes in the 21st century. This is the ninth book in the series so it may be helpful to listen to earlier ones like "The Water Room" or "Seventy Seven Clocks" to get used to the characters, but this book will certainly stand on its own.

Every book brings us a mystery with a central theme and strange and intriguing facts about it - this time the history, myths and anecdotes of the "Punch and Judy Show" and Mr Punch's arrogant evil is well explored in this marvellous twisting tale.

Meanwhile the Peculiar Crimes Unit continues to fight for its existence against the devious Home Office Security and we still cannot be sure it will survive. The team is gradually expanding and we get more involved with their different personalities and interaction.

Tim Goodman is the perfect narrator for this series, all his characters sound just right and his particular irresponsible, grumpy, but very likeable Arthur Bryant could not possibly be bettered.

This is the first time I have listened to an audio version in this series . All of the earlier books were read in print form. Sometimes this series gets a little hard to follow, listening to it makes you slow down and hear every word. I loved it!

What does Tim Goodman bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

His reading brings the characters to life and makes them even easier to picture in the minds eye.

Good but convoluted

I met this author several years ago when I did a story on him for a magazine I edited. Nice guy, good writer and fellow Gator alum. So I want to give him four or five stars every time I read one of his books. The best I could do on this one was three stars because, quite frankly, it was a little hard to follow. The good guys and the bad guys kept trading places and some of it seems like it was made up on the fly. But Grippando did something right because I kept on listening and I kept on being interested. The ending was a bit abrupt but not disappointing. What can I say? A three-star effort and listen.

Good Surprises and Bad Balance Out For 3 Stars

It's going to be simple and obvious right? Grab some Bernie Madoff headlines, throw in a square jawed hero and pretty woman in danger straight from central casting, blend, sell some books and then make a bunch money off the movie rights . . . but that's not what this book is.

The characterizations are a little deeper, the resolutions less formula than I expected. The biggest surprise, initially good, was the plot. It takes awhile to get rolling but it was much more intricate than I expected. The author also went to great lengths to make sure all the details were taken care of: no loose ends. When way too many books are slap dash with their plotting, this was refreshing. So far, so good . . .

. . . but the intricacy of the plot goes from being a pleasant surprise to being way too much of a good thing. When yet another player with yet another set of motives adds yet another layer of complexity you may find yourself wishing the book would just end. This is the only time I've ever read a book and thought "boy, I wish the author had spent a little less time on the plot."

i've listened to most of the 'aimee' books by cara black and while they weren't great books they were at least good. this one though was so disappointing i almost didn't finish. it was slow and boring.

if i listen to another one of her books i'll get it through the online library like i did her others and not waste one of my credits on audible.

Changed the narrator. This one was a bowl of oatmeal.

What didnt you like about Joyce Beans performance?

Her cadence was off. Her male voices were absurd.

Not sure. I may listen from time to time when I can tolerate the narrator just to hear how it ends.

WONDERFUL!!!

Omg..tis book wasso good! One of my best pick thus far. I actually read Abandoned first and I really didnt like it as much as this one. But I found this story amazing to the very end. The story line wasso different from anything I read. The ending and the how and why the killer did what he did was brilliant..the ending..OMG!

totally unbelievable

I will be asking for a return on this book. I could not finish this and would not wish this on my worst enemy. When I listened to the first chapter of this book I actually laughed outright and immediately paused the book to share with my daughter the ridiculousness of what I had just heard. The author of this book seems to think that every person in law enforcement has either been shot; has shot someone; has killed someone; has had a friend or family member killed in front of them because they were a cop; or has had a partner die and/or commit suicide. This is just a really bad book. I would suggest that you not waste your time.

Very dark thriller

This book was particularly dark and disturbing, even for a thriller. While the overall plot had potential, there were scenes that went into specific detail about child abuse and torture. I love a good thriller, but this wasn't even entertaining, it was just twisted.

Another great book in the Smoky Barrett Series!!

I must say this series has made me a huge Cody McFayden fan! I love this series! Smoky Barrett is the perfect heroine. She is intelligent, fearless and a champion to all victims.

Stronger voice

I can listen to this series over and over. There is but one thing I wish could change of Brianna Brontes interpretation of the heroines in the series. Is to please not be so whiny sounding. It always sounds like a Im in constant pain voice. Other than that Im goodThese are strong heroines. No matter the horrors they go through they come out stronger for it. Azreals story would be awesome Hope Lora will head the series back to the east coast breeds.

Wait? Did the killer switch genders half way thru?

Am I just imagining this? I thought up to about 3 hours from the end that the killer was a female. Then suddenly this person calling themselves death is a dude? I could have sworn the killer was referred to as a she and even voiced as a female.

Aside from that, I'm irritated at the same sorts of things other reviewers (see the Amazon reviews, since the Audible ones all seem to be positive). I was unimpressed with Cassa, half the time she acts strong and the other half she's weak and whiny. I was even less impressed by Cabal, he supposedly knew his mate for years but screwed around on her, letting her suffer with mating heat while he was sleeping with half the world. Then when they got together she was either harping on his cheating or melting over how she loved him and he was cold and manipulative, blaming her for something she had no control over all the way up to the end when suddenly he knew all along that it wasn't her fault.

I'm also not happy about how all this is handled by Jonas and his manipulation and threats against other breeds, especially Cabal when he finally loses it because Cassa was kidnapped. Actually, I'm not happy about how all the breeds are becoming cold manipulating assh*les.

Then there's the inconsistencies in the timelines and story plots. I'll keep listening to the series, at least for now.

Drama Quenn

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This was my first breed series, but not my first Lora Leigh book. The reviews a were misleading; the female protagonist is complete pain in the rear. If you like a bickering couple, mistrusting couple then this is your book. I havent finished this book, Im on chapter 22 and still reading to find out who is doing the killing. If not for that I would let it go because I sick of Cassa Hawkins being a drama queen.

No, women would be the one to watch the movie and we are tired of lead female like Hawkins.

more great Lawrence Block

Have read most all of Lawrence Block's books. In "Seven Million Ways to Die" he wrote the best description I have ever read of an alcoholic event (I am an alcoholic so I know from whence I speak). What a wonderful writer and look forward to his next novel. Louella E Rehfield.

Too Much...Not Enough.

Scudder's struggles with alcohol have always been an interesting sub-plot in Block's book, but takes center stage here. Center stage with a spotlight and otherwise empty stage -- there's barely a crime to be dealt with! It ultimately renders this tale moribund. I could barely finish it.

That said, Block is one of my very favorite authors...I'll be right in line for his next one. Just a misfire here.

I always enjoy and prefer Block's reading of his own material, but Stechschulte does a fine job here.

It's honesty. It's truthfulness. It's grittiness.

Our Hero was the best. His struggle for sobriety made the story meaningful. His search for the truth made it worth listening to.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The scene where he comes home to find the bottle on the table. His description of the smell, the taste, the want & the need. I felt it deep in my gut.

I know some people find the constant referral to the 12 Steps, AA & Meetings annoying but this whole story is about getting off the booze & working the Steps. None of it would've happened if the murdered man wasn't working the Steps.

I hated having to stop reading...couldn't wait to hear each part to come. Cannot wait to read another by this author.

Easy reading

I liked this book, even the sappier chic-lit parts. I liked that the story moved quickly and was interesting. This is a good choice if you want a casual quick read that doesn't require too much thinking. However there were still definitely parts that will make you think .. And feel.. And maybe even get angry. The narration was great with one exception: all the 14 - 18 yr. old girls sounded like they were around 6 ... Not too realistic. Overall a light pleasant read dealing with a sad tragedy.

Classic Wallander book

Well written with a good plot and great narrater. All those who like detective mysteries this book is for you. I enjoyed the listen from begining to end.

Not a Good Story

I really thought this second Wallander book was awful. I have listened to more than 40 books and this is in my top 5 books of the worst books I've listened too. It was so unrealistic, the fact that Wallander would put his life in danger so many times in going to another country on a case that really did not have a great storyline. I also did not like the fact that this story was previously on tape and has been put on audible without tidying up the annoying breaks in the story saying, end of side one, then saying after a pause, saying side two and so

on...

Great read, but with a niggle

This is very well read. I especially like the way that Sean Barrett switches to a Swedish accent when Wallander and his colleagues are speaking in English to their Latvian counterparts.

But, I have a niggle. This is apparently a transfer from an original "Book-on-tape" as every 30 minutes or so you get an "End of Side X -pause- Side X+1" break lasting what seems like 15 seconds or so, which is invariably in the middle of a chapter, breaking the flow. In some cases there's a Chapter break within a few minutes which is even more galling. Please can someone re-master this to remove these breaks?

Good story but ending over dramatised

A gripping story, well read, with building tension, but the final chapters are a bit over the top without a plausible explanation of some of the narrative events. The residual tape pauses are annoying and could be deleted easily - so why haven't they been?

Great start to the Wallander series of books

As the first of the series of books featuring inspector Wallander, Mankell introduces us to many of the characters that feature in future books. The narration is really good, and I have heard Sean Barrett reading other Scandinavian novels also to great effect.

The story features an interesting time, and though a bit escapist at times, is an interesting and enjoyable listen throughout.

If you are a Wallander/Mankell fan, or a Euro Crime Fan, this has a great feel and is worth the purchase.

Oops, wrong book

I enjoyed this story but unfortunately I got the abridged version. I think the story would have been more developed if I had gotten the unabridged version. I do recommend this story to people who like Cussler's style of writing.

Great book, but a bad abridgment.

A good book. My only complaint with this book was the abridgment seemed to take a lot of the story out.

awsome story

I love the story and The Narrative of everything on there one of the best books I've read for a while

Launch of a New Adventure Series

I began listening with my son who is at that age where reading is too burdensome. The adventure Cussler and Blackwood weave is perfect for that age. Mr Poe's narration included just enough drama to add depth, while not going over the top.

Historicly Boring

Mr. Cussler has moved from fast moving, intriging action and interesting plots to rambling dialogue, history laden prose and a lack of clear connection through the plot. I have many of Mr. Cussler's books and enjoy most of them. Lost Empire is not one of these.
