Title: The Story of Classical Music
    Author: Darren Henley
    Narrator: Aled Jones
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-07-11
    Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 13 votes
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
The lives and music of the great composers of classical music unfold in this entertaining account, introduced by singer and presenter Aled Jones. In 1200 years, classical music grew from the chanting of medieval monks through the symphonies of Beethoven and the grand operas of Wagner to the huge orchestral sound-world of the 21st century, with its electronics and its film music. In his easy-going style, Aled Jones paints vivid portraits of over 80 composers, each one illustrated with some of his, or her, most famous music. This all-encompassing introduction to classical music also includes a wealth of biographical and instrumental information on the CD-ROM element: put CD 4 into the computer and up will come pictures, articles, sheet music, quizzes and more, which will inform and fascinate the whole family.
    Editorial Reviews:
This charming compilation is cheerfully hosted by the clear and friendly voice of Marin Alsop, who walks young (and curious adult) listeners through an engaging history of classical music. Alsop's commentary leads and follows ear-pleasing segments of great classical music, briskly recorded masterworks punctuating short biographies and observations. The language is clear and chatty. A wonderful way to learn about the great names and histories of the world's great composers and musical movements.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Story of Classical Music to be better than the print version?
great way to understand how music has developed. Aled is easy to listen to and the music inserts are fun.
Brilliant! Great for adults and children alike
Covering some 1500 years of music in just over 4 hours is an ambitious feat, but this overview of classical music is a fun narrative that captivates to the end! Young listeners will be introduced to significant composers and the broad changes in style over time, while older listeners will appreciate having familiar works and composers put in their historical context.

Learn about Blues Music with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. Blues music is a type of African-American folk music. It is concerned with expressing emotions through song. Generally, blues songs deal with tragic themes such as lost love, hardship, poverty, and death. Indeed, the name "blues" comes from the emotions expressed in the songs themselves! However, blues songs are presented in a way to make audiences feel better about their own situation in life. This is because they encourage listeners to take control of their lives and move past any hardship. Due to this, blues music is very effective at connecting with its audience. This is best proved by Lead Belly, a famous US musician who was released from jail in 1925 due to his ability to sing the blues!
The distinct vocal style that characterizes the blues stems from southern work songs. These work songs were sung by plantation slaves in the south of the United States of America in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Title: Discover: Music of the Romantic Era
    Author: David McCleery
    Narrator: Jeremy Siepmann
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-19-09
    Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 13 votes
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
Amid a background of wars and revolution, the 19th century produced many of the world's best-loved composers, including Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, and Tchaikovsky. Discover: Music of the Romantic Era charts the course of music through those turbulent but exhilarating times with 40 music excerpts. Light-hearted but authoritative, it tells the fascinating, often scandalous life stories of the 19th century's greatest composers and describes how they created musical history.
    Editorial Reviews:
For some of the eighteenth and twentieth centuries and most of the nineteenth, "romantic" music dominated the concert halls of Europe and America. Ever expanding the scope of musical grammar, it sought to express deeply felt emotional states, tell rousing stories, and evoke beautiful pictures. The works of its composers remain among the most universally enjoyed in the classical repertoire. While Naxos's critical history of the era is cursory, on the plus side, the recording contains spirited musical illustrations. Critical analyses of individual compositions are clearly stated and illuminating. Narrator Jeremy Siepmann has a pleasant, mature British sound. He employs it in a documentary style that is placid but never dull.
    Members Reviews:
    Well done volume
Good succinct chapters on the composers and the Romantic era in music. It is a helpful small volume with good examples of composers and their works and a good summary of the basis of romantic music.

©2008 Alan Cross; (P)2008 HarperCollins Canada
    Editorial Reviews:
Alan Cross has been a disc jockey for over 30 years and has the confident and cool voice to prove it. Some years ago, he embarked on a writing project intended to trace the roots and development of "alternative rock". His project took him up through seminal 90s acts like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Now, he has added a volume to bring his collection more up to date. Volume four focuses on newer bands like the White Stripes and the Killers and how they are "sending ripples" through the industry.
As Cross acknowledges in his introduction, how formative these newer bands will end up being is an open question. Whats not an open question is that Cross knowledge and speculation are great fun in and of themselves.

©2008 Alan Cross; (P)2008 HarperCollins Publishers Ltd.
    Editorial Reviews:
Alan Cross has been a disc jockey for over 30 years and has the pleasantly serene, confident, and cool voice to prove it. Some years ago, he embarked on a writing project intended to trace the roots and development of "alternative rock", a sometimes misleading term, as Cross acknowledges.
Cross began his history with 60s alternative icons like the Velvet Underground, went up through the 1980s with New Order and others, and continues here in Volume 3 with a deep dive into the 90s. Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, and others are placed in their context and given a thorough treatment. One highlight of this recording is Crosss musings not only on the music, but on the shifty process of history itself.

Excellent Companion To "La Vie En Rose" With Marion Cotillard
I bought this book because I was fascinated with the Marion Cotillard film of Edith Piaf and also because I could use it to gain more experience with reading and speaking French.
It has a good photo section and is a very personal picture of the French singer as seen through the eyes of a close confidante.

Kim Cooper is the editrix of Scram - a journal of unpopular culture. She is also the co-editor of the acclaimed books Lost in the Grooves and Bubblegum Music is the Naked Truth. She lives in Los Angeles.
    Editorial Reviews:
With its multi-layered low-fi sensibility, Neutral Milk Hotel's 1994 album rolls from meek melancholy melodies to joyous triumphant swells, creating an enigmatic indie classic whose fans hold it close to their hearts. Music writer Kim Cooper, herself a fan, puts some context to the mystery, describing the collaborative environment from which the album emerged and the reasons for bandleader Jeff Magnum's sudden decision to take a hiatus from music following the albums successes. Donna Coney Island's emphatic performance of the audiobook engages the listener, painting a living picture of the friends and musicians who created the album while treating it seriously, as a significant moment in time. Fans of the album and the newly initiated will delight in this loving aural portrait.
    Critic Reviews:
"Exhaustively researched and warmly narrated, Kim Cooper's Cinderella story of the 1997 Neutral Milk Hotel album that has sold upward of 150,000 copies primarily through word of mouth and caused its primary creator to withdraw from the public-eye functions as an indie-rock doctrine. Tracing the evolution of the band's main participants back to their childhoods and following their paths through the culmination of their final tour, she debunks myths and humanizes developments along the way" (The Chicago Tribune)
    Members Reviews:
    Great book, terrible narration.
How exactly does a 4-star book become a 2-star audiobook?
Kim Cooper's fascinating and insightful look into Neutral Milk Hotel's magnum opus, "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea," paints a thrilling portrait of the creation of one of indie rock's crowning masterpieces. Unfortunately, Donna Coney Island's soulless narration drones on with the delivery of a grab-bag pick from the pool of corporate "on-hold" recording talent. I halfway expected an AT&T customer service rep to interrupt, and rescue me from the tedium of her "always smiling" presentation.
    Awesome!
Great stuff. Their story is so interesting. Author/Narrator calls Keith RIchards Keith Richard, and Arcade Fire The Arcade Fire. Ohhhh wellllll. Fun listen!
