    Hard to guess the audience
I am more than just familiar with all of the operas that he lectures on. And "lecture" is the operative word. This would bore anyone who doesn't already love the operas. Anyone who already is familiar with the operas and their settings would find it boring, and uninteresting. Too little insight, too many dry facts that do not add richness to the experience of the music, the production or the plot. I cannot guess what class of "reader" this would appeal to me, but I'm definitely not it.

and he loved dancing to it and turning the pages as he ...
We first discovered this book-CD set at the local library when our son was two, and he loved dancing to it and turning the pages as he danced. Then it disappeared from the library, so we bought it for his fourth birthday. This time, he enjoyed playing his drums along with it. It's an excellent combination of music and book, with beautiful pictures, and I highly recommend it, especially to people who love music and words, and want their children to understand that love, if not also share it.
    Son LOVES this book!!
This is a beautifully illustrated book with great poetry for the young jazz lover!
    book review
Very nice illustrations. It is more of poetry than a story about jazz, but I do appreciate it. I'd read this with probably late elementary age kids.
    Poetry for all ages
Any one who loves jazz and the jazz culture will be wooed by this lovely book. Illustrations by Christopher Myers and fine poetry by Walter Dean Myers written in the text like music itself. This is a fine book for all ages, a treasure to American heritage.
    Torn Binder
The book would have been great if it had come to me in one piece, but the binder was all torn. So the only thing I can think to do with it is frame the pages.

    Wish the playing was better
Would you listen to Keyboard Conversations again? Why?
Quite surprised from such a musician to hear such a poor performance. Very blurry and heavy, many times banging too. To be honest, I do think the info is great especially for young kids, but I will save the money and not buy more from him.
I Take Back What I Said
I take back what I said in my previous review about this being too short for a whole book credit. Yeah, it's short, but it's really great and more than worth it. Go for it!
    Totally enjoyable
It's a great idea to have the combination of the concert and the explanation. It brings the piece of music and the composer closer to you. The performance is fantastic, I have listened to it again and again.

    Publisher's Summary:
Copland embraced the populist movement of the 1930s and began to alter his musical style, saying: "I wanted to see if I couldn't say what I had to say in the simplest possible terms." Later, at an age when most men think of retiring, he launched a new career as a conductor, leading orchestras around the world.
Schwarz uses musical excerpts from the ballet, Appalachian Spring (which originated from a proposal from Martha Graham), Billy the Kid, and Fanfare for the Common Man to explore the use of folk tunes, delicate traces of melody, and overlapped harmonies in Copland's music.

As a performer he was one of the first great superstars, dazzling his audiences as much with his flamboyant dress and gestures as with his unprecedented virtuosity. Liszt's approach to music placed him in the vanguard of Romantic innovation. He greatly expanded the range of sonorities available from the piano, inventing both delicate figuration and thundering effects. By addressing dramatic and poetic themes in his compositions, he helped create instead a music that expressed those sublime, ecstatic, harrowing, and heroic feelings that the Romantics held to be the essence of life.

At the end of the presentation, the main piece analyzed should be just played in its entirety without commentary.

  • La sonnambula Audiobook by Thomson Smillie

    Title: La sonnambula
    Author: Thomson Smillie
    Narrator: David Timson
    Format: Original Recording
Length: 1 hr and 16 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-26-12
    Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
La sonnambula was written by Bellini as a vehicle for two of the supreme singers of his age and accordingly is a fine example of the school we call bel canto, where beauty of voice and the virtuosity of the singers is integral to conveying the emotions in the soul of the composer. The fact that Bellini was one of the great melodists, writing long, beautiful vocal lines, that he was a master orchestrator, and that he could write stirringly for the chorus all conspire to make La sonnambula an extremely enjoyable example of Italian opera in its prime.
    Editorial Reviews:
Thomson Smillies series Opera Explained is an ingenious and enchanting production that makes opera accessible to listeners of all types. In this edition, Smillie helps listeners achieve a higher understanding and appreciation for the comic opera Lelisir damore, by Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti. By mixing the beautiful pieces of music from the opera with Smillies insightful and entertaining examinations - performed expertly by veteran narrator David Timson - listeners are given the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful example from one of the more unapproachable forms of art.
