Title: Brewer's Hill Butcher: Jeffrey Dahmer's Reign of Terror and the Role of Religion
Subtitle: Mastermind Serial Killers, Book 1
    Author: A. Zens
    Narrator: J.-M. Kuczynski
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-24-17
    Publisher: Locust and Honey Productions
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 28 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Criminals
    Publisher's Summary:
The killing pattern of Jeffrey Dahmer is somewhat remarkable. While many authors rightfully express how shocking and unexpected the discovery of Dahmer's Milwaukee apartment full of horrors was, there's much more to the story.
It is worth asking, "How could someone so externally soft-spoken, friendly, and polite toward authority figures keep such grisly torture and murder so well-hidden from those around him, including the tenants in his Milwaukee neighborhood?" Apparently, no one could see it coming. The sexually charged torture and murder simply did not fit the psychological profile which he exhibited toward the world.
This book, though, has a radically different question to answer and a different premise from most books in the true-crime genre. What kept Dahmer in check from racking up even more victims than he did? In large part, it was due to the restraining influence of moral religion and the hospitality of his grandmother who provided a loving, but structured environment for him. These were the intervening years when Dahmer describes an internal struggle where he felt the urge to perversion, but was able to say deep-down, "No" to the impulse to anesthetize, maim, torture, and kill another homosexual victim. The point is not that Dahmer was ever truly sincere in his religious beliefs, but that religion bound his soul to recognize the difference between right and wrong.

    Title: Harry's Fight
Subtitle: Harry Marsden - From Catholic Care Home Abuse to Gangster to Good Fellow
    Author: Stephen Richards
    Narrator: Jim Cassidy
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 55 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-18-17
    Publisher: Mirage Publishing
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Criminals
    Publisher's Summary:
This is the story of Harry Marsden and the abuse he and many others suffered during their childhoods at the hands of the Catholic Church in St Mary's children's home. This book tracks the young Harry Marsden from a four-year-old being abandoned by his mother, through the savage treatment he and many others endured from the strict and brutal regime of the Sisters of Charity, to his rise to the top of the crime world, and then his turnaround to becoming a top boxing coach honored with award after award.
Physical and sexual abuse of children in care homes is well documented, but here is something far more powerful than a committee sitting to hear evidence of child sexual and physical abuse in the Roman Catholic Church. The Catholic Church sat on many acts of abuse by its clergy, the scandal of cover-ups has been revealed, but bringing attention to such evil and wholesale deeds to the public eye was not possible without the courage of the thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of victims to step out of the shadows and speak out.

  • My Days in the Underworld Audiobook by Agni Sreedhar

Title: My Days in the Underworld
Subtitle: Rise of the Bangalore Mafia
    Author: Agni Sreedhar
    Narrator: Manish Dangardive
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 16 hrs and 2 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-01-17
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Criminals
    Publisher's Summary:
Agni Sreedhar is an underworld don turned writer turned journalist turned filmmaker. He studied law in Bangalore and was intent on entering the Indian Civil Service when circumstances forced him to turn to crime. Starting from the early 1980s, Sreedhar found himself entrenched in the bitter gang wars that shaped the contours of modern Bangalore. This book is an intimate, first-person account of the two decades he spent in the world of crime. But My Days in the Underworld isn't just a tale of murder and blood. It is a study of a system that runs parallel to the world ordinary people inhabit - a lateral universe, one with its own police force and laws, one where the criminal justice system has all but failed. This is a story of a city as seen through the personal histories of politicians who ruled Karnataka, men like Gundu Rao, Ramakrishna Hegde, Bangarappa and Deve Gowda as well as those who were responsible for shaping Bangalore's underworld: Dawood Ibrahim, Chhota Rajan, Sharad Shetty, Kotwal Ramchandra, Jayaraj and Muthappa Rai.
    Members Reviews:
A stream of consciousness narration that I enjoyed more than I should
This is a riveting stream of consciousness account of all things related to the rowdy Bangalore underworld and it's detailed, three-decade history as told by 'Agni' Sreedhar. I use the term 'stream of consciousness' because there is no real plot or focused narrative in this book, replete with jarring phrases that come out of nowhere, out-of-sync incidents, and more characters than a Garcia Marquez novel in every paragraph. However, what I liked was the vivid imagery it brings up if early Bangalore and the insiders' bare account of its underworld. What 'Agni' Sreedhar misses in terms of coherency or direction, he makes up in a seemingly honest (even the lies are easy to pick out!), bare bones description of what it was like to be a gangster in Bangalore in 'those days'. As a Bangalorean interested in crimes, this was a read that I enjoyed a lot more than I should have!
    Gripping and well narrated
I have read the 3 book original Kannada version of this book (Daadagiriya Dinagalu). The narrative in those books is truly amazing. I completed part 1 and most of part 2 during a 15 hour flight from Dubai to Seattle and couldn't wait to get home form the airport to finish the remaining parts! Sridhar's detailed narration including recalling many of the minute details of the dates and various locations in and around Bangalore where many of the incidents took place were quite surreal to me, having grown up in south central Bangalore myself.
This English version, though not so detailed, is a very faithful abridged version of the Kannada magnum opus. The author and editors have done a great job in keeping the narration spiffy by cutting down details that may seem alien to non-Kannada readers and also trimming down on some of the parts that are less relevant to readers of this day and age. Although I do wish some parts were kept detailed like the original. For instance, the days the author spent with Kotwal prior to his killing are very vividly depicted in the original leading up to a very palpable sense of impending murder and suspense. In the English version I felt we got to Kotwal's death a bit too fast.

    Wow great voice!
Would you consider the audio edition of Ticket Man: Inside the Criminal Underworld of New York City to be better than the print version?
A book audio is new for me. My first impression is it's telling a wonderful story with enthusiasm. The voice has a little New York accent and switches from a 14 year old boy to the main character so well. I had it on while driving a two hour ride and the trip flew by. I tried to imagine what the characters look like, and wanted to hear it till it finishes.

Coming from an Italian immigrant family, Alphonse Gabriel Capone definitely became famous, but for all the wrong reasons. Popularly known as Scarface, Al Capone went on to become famous (or infamous) as the leader of the Chicago Outfit, during the Prohibition era.
Before he became the king of the crime scene, he was a Five Points Gang member who then later went on to become a bouncer. From there on, he became the bodyguard of Johnny Torrio, the head of a crime syndicate dealing in illegal alcohol. A conflict with the North Side Gang, which led Torrio to be almost killed, forced him to retire and hand over control to Capone. As his business expanded, his crimes and killings increased, forcing the federal authorities to prosecute him for tax evasion so that his reign on crime could be ended. The prosecution resulted in 11 years of prison for Capone.
But how did Capone actually begin his life of crime? What was his childhood like? How did he become such a pain for the authorities? How did his life end? Let's find out in this audiobook.

    Great story
We were always told we were related to James. When my sons had nevet heard the stories but when they had DNA checked, sure enough, it was true! My father loved the stories written by James, wife and daughter. His uncle had claimed he road with the gang, late in his life. His grandmothers sister, had a son the only man she ever spoke of was James. So it was very interesting.

    Publisher's Summary:
Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of Zero Zero Zero by Roberto Saviano, read by Paul Michael.
From the international best-selling author of Gomorrah, this searing exposé of dirty money and the drug trade reveals how they are at the heart of our lives, our economy, and our world.
    Critic Reviews:
"The most important book of the year.... Here it is, laid bare: cartel as corporation, corporation as cartel; cocaine as pure capitalism.... Saviano realises the brutal truth: that to understand narco-traffic is to understand the modern world...it is revolutionary." (Ed Vulliamy, Observer)
"A dense, dazzling, dizzying narrative about the terrifying violence of the cocaine trade, but also the vast, unassailable reach of it." (Rose George, Independent)
"A tremendously gripping work of reportage." (Ian Thomson, Evening Standard)
"Italy's bravest investigative writer...must-read nonfiction." (GQ)
"Impassioned, remarkable." (Misha Glenny, Financial Times)
"After reading Saviano, it becomes impossible to see Italy, and the global market, in the same way again." (The New York Times)
    Members Reviews:
Fascinating read into a hidden business world.
This book is a fascinating look inside a business that breeds corruption and horror in many societies from the poor producers to the victims in the production cycle. Not a recommended read for anybody fighting addictions and Thier own demons.
Typical Drugs Came From Nowhere Nonsense
This author writes beautifully. The problem is his memory for the drug war keeps activities safely away from the US and the UK. I suppose you can never give an honest account of the drug war and why it exists these days. Still, for anyone who knows who caused the entire decades-long war and who started the practice of state-sponsored subjugation with opium, you can only wince and be appalled that the worst offender of the conflict, America, gets zero condemnation.
    terrible performance
i really have to question the wisdom of employing a voice actor that can't pronuce Spanish names properly for this book

    Title: Fast Ride to Hell
Subtitle: When the Dalton Boys Rode in Kansas
    Author: Nick Vulich
    Narrator: Bryan J. Howard
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 19 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-17-16
    Publisher: Nicholas L Vulich
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Criminals
    Publisher's Summary:
The Adair robbery was the beginning of the end for the Dalton gang. By all accounts, it was one of their more successful raids. The take was estimated at somewhere over $17,000 - not bad for a single night's work. But the pressure put on the gang afterwards led them down the path to carelessness - and ruin.
Eight well-armed men rode up to the small frame station about an hour before the KATY No. Two train on the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas line pulled in. Night station agent Heywood found himself taken captive before he knew what had happened.
The robbers appeared unconcerned. They waited on the station platform - laughing, and shooting jokes. For Heywood things weren't near as pleasant. He was kept at the muzzle end of eight Winchesters as he waited to flag the train down.
As soon as the train came to a standstill Emmett and Grat boarded the engine. One of them took engineer Glen Ewing captive. Bill Doolin, George "Bitter Creek" Newcomb, and Dick Broadwell fanned out, and grabbed the conductor, and the rest of the train crew. Charley Pierce stayed behind to watch the horses.
After the robbery, the Dalton boys rested up in the Dog Creek Hills that night. They split up the booty, and slept all day. After that, they split up and rode off in groups of two and three. In Beyond the Law, Emmett says Bob took an inventory of the gang members, and trimmed the band down to five core members he knew he could trust - the remaining members were the brothers, Bob, Emmett, and Grat Dalton, Bill Power, and Dick Broadwell. Bill Doolin was wild and unruly, mentally awkward. Pierce and Newcomb displayed an uncurbed "rampant foolishness". But the biggest reason for divesting members from the gang was it was too large. There was not enough 'divvy' when each split was made.
Bob needed more money for that fabled escape to South America. But that greed, that lust for more money, would leave him shorthanded for the gangs final job. Another byproduct of the Adair robbery was that the heat on the boys was turned up a notch, as more lawmen scoured Indian Territory searching for them. After the robbery, the express company put a $5,000 reward on each mans heada total of $40,000. It was enough to tempt strangers, and good friends.
The boys were on a fast road to hell, with a posse of deputy marshals close behind them, and the scent of blood and money ahead.
