Arthur Conan Doyle named "The Red-Headed League" his second favorite Sherlock Holmes story. The tale first appeared in 1891 and was included in Doyle's debut collection about the Victorian detective. The premise is comical: a poor London pawnbroker appears at Holmes' Baker Street address to complain of being recruited by an odd newspaper advertisement exclusively seeking red-headed male applicants. But the mystery is a minor, albeit amusing, challenge to the famed consulting detective, who quickly traces the advertisement to a troupe of burglars.

Edward Raleigh, winner of AudioFile's Golden Voice Award, brings his usual range and ability to the performance. Of all the actors who have played Sherlock Holmes, Raleigh ranks among the most exceptional.

This book was great!!! It left with cliff hangers that made me keep wanting to read more!!! It was one of those books that you could not put down. The plot of the book was there was a man named Mr Jamez Wilson. One day he had applied for a job in the red headed league. Thins job was only open to those men who had red hair. Mr Wilson was a red headed mad so he applied for the job, along with the thousands of others. This job was an easy one. You get payed a lot for only doing a little job like copping down an encyclopedia. Everything went fine for about eight weeks or so until one day when Mr Wilson went to work it was closed down. Mr Wilson had asked the townspeople and no one has even heard of that before. Mr Wilson was confused, so he went to Mr Holmes a very famous detecive to solve this case. Mr Holmes was waiting in a celler full of money on night because he thought it was spusious. The next thing you knew the door opend! You'll have to read to find out what happend after that!

Great audio book!!!!!

This is an audio book of a legendary story. You will enjoy it if you like mystery novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

A collection of classic travel book reviews

I was hoping to hear more about Paul Theroux's traveling.Instead he reviews Kipling and other classic travel literature which was interesting,but I don't always like the classical stuff as much as the modern travelogue.There were a couple of short essays of Paul's travels,but having to pay for two parts really wasn't worth the credits.Buy Dark Star Safari or Ghost train for a much better adventure.Buy London Embassy or Elephanta Suite for some entertaining short stories.This one was worth a pass.

Superior craftsmanship!

Years ago I stopped buying short story collections as I found it to be like buying a CD by a favorite band: There would be the one, popular, Top 10 cut, then the rest of the music would be filler. I was encouraged by a writer-friend to read Corpus Christi and I have to say honestly that each and every story is a gem. This book made me laugh and weep and sing and dance--and weep again--sometimes in the sadness of the story, sometimes in joy at the gift of Johnston's writing. Long ago it seemed the literary world lost the vision of a short story with beginning, middle, end. Here the skill in such craftsmanship is reborn. Bret Johnston deftly chisels every sentence out of the substance that is his beloved medium: the written word.

Thank the muses!

If you love the short story as an art form, buy this book! You won't be disappointed.

Not crazy about this collection

The writing is well executed but the plots seem a bit repetitive and even hum drum at times. I couldn't finish it.

It's OK reading, not Hemingway or Faulkner....

I liked it--a book of literary stories anchored around the town of Corpus Christi. By the end of the book all the stories fit together and gave it the feel of a novel. If you like literary short stories, you'll like Corpus Christi.
