We love this series and as homeschoolers have learned much(mom included) about history and famous figures worldwide. A must listen for kids of all ages (again, mom included). I'm so hooked that I tend to keep listening while my kids are in some class or activity. I just have to remember to use the bookmark feature. I've gotten grounded several times by my children....they take the iPad into the next class they go to.

Book 8 in the 39 clues series is comparable to this book in the way certain elements interfered with the progress of the cahills. This gives this new series a tie in with the previous series.

What does David Pittu bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

He brings emotions to play into the story as its being read. His tone is not that of someone reading lazily. he makes you want to know what is going to happen next and make you re-listen to part to understand other parts that have come up.

It made want to get the next book in the series to see where it would lead the cahill team next.

Yeah, totally. This is my favorite Cahill book.

A great story for all ages. The saga continues and is only getting better. It is a shame that the wait between installments is so long. Great, fuin read for all.

Will leave you wanting more...

This latest installment of Septimus Heap has some unexpected twists and will not disappoint devoted readers of the series. It is interesting to see the characters grow and mature with each book and in "Darke" they are really coming into their own. What I find intriguing is how much responsability the characters are given at a young age and how the author has woven this into the time and setting of her story. I did miss seeing Aunt Zelda and Wolf Boy, though I did not miss Milo at all (we get a little glimpse of them in the end). Gerard Doyle once again gives a great performance. He is truly enjoyable to listen to. Unfortunately it will be another year before we are able to visit the Castle once again. We can only guess what Angie Sage has in store for us next!

Wonderful

After having been a bit disappointed in Syren, I'm glad to say that I thought Darke was one of the best yet. It took me less than 24 hours to finish the whole book. I started in the afternoon, forewent television in the evening to listen and finished it the next day. The story was intriguing and well written, with lots of twists and turns that came together nicely in the end without being too convenient or contrived. Many of the old characters returned and new ones were introduced. A couple of the story lines took unexpectedly realistic paths without being disappointing as they were handled well. Sage moves on in Darke to reflect the ages of her characters instead of arresting their development as some might be tempted to do, but keeps enough of the surroundings intact to lend the books a sort of homey feel to them. She also obviously loves language and uses it to the fullest advantage and in keeping with "time" and feel of her books. Superb vocabulary, wonderful characters and a great story. Loved this one and can't wait for more!

Can't Wait For More!

I look forward to every single Septimus Heap book. I love listening to them. I think that Angie Sage is a master wordsmith and I get giggles over her use of language. I highly recommend these books. Every time I listen to them, I find myself driving very slow on the way home wanting to get more of the book listened to before I have to turn it off. In addition, Gerard Doyle is an excellent narrator.

Theodore Boone: The Abduction

I enjoyed the first book in this series Theodore Boone: The Kid Lawyer so decided to listen to this one also. Glad I did. Richard Thomas does a good job narrating the story. This story is advertised for children but adults will enjoy it also. It is a short story that leaves one feeling good. It is nice to see a 13 year old with such a focus on what he wants to do with his life. Enjoyed the scenes in animal court in both books. This one particularly was funny. You will enjoy this book for a 4 hour trip with the family.

A kids story??!! Who knew?

I just see now that other reviewers have noted this is a kids story. Huh! Maybe that's the reason I didn't care for it -- I don't recall seeing, anywhere on Audible, that this was intended for kids. If I'd known that, I wouldn't have bought it, that's for sure. Anyway, the official blurb calls the book "pause-resistant" which is a major joke. It's a total sleeper -- not a bad little story, I guess. Just that in the scheme of things, it doesn't matter. There's nothing to keep you listening other than inertia -- and the fact that you paid for it. It's not bad. It's just ....... nothing. If there is an upside, it was listening to Richard Thomas read, and reminding myself, over and over, how much I enjoyed the Walton's, back then. Welcome back, John-Boy. That part was fun. (Overall? Save your credit)

What made the experience of listening to Theodore Boone: The Abduction the most enjoyable?

I heard book one and had to continue on the the story. This book was very enjoyable and I would recommend this to all ages. The story line is perfect as to how a town would react if someone in that community was abducted.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Theodore Boone: The Abduction?

I really liked the part when Theo was in Kitten court helping the Haitians. To me it was hilarious.

What about Richard Thomass performance did you like?

I believe Richard Thomas did an outstanding job. His is not to fast of a narrator. He gives you time to absorb what is written. It is also enough time to let your imagination fill all gaps if there is any. His way of speaking also makes the characters come alive.

Excellent Series of Books

I down loaded book 1 in the series as my wife was nagging me for a new book to listen to. It wasn't long before I downloaded all ten books. They were easy listening and it was great that David Pittu was able to narate all the books in the series. The series may have been written for teenagers but my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed them

A Clues Nightmare

Where does The 39 Clues, Book 10 rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I think this book is pretty good. It's kinda violent and kinda sad. But,overall its a great book and it's part of my favorite series.

I really love the codes and traps in the Gauntlet.

Fun kids story.

I loved this book as s kid so decided to give it a shot as an adult. I can now see many problems with it but that doesn't matter as a kid. I think it takes he main character through a rewarding adventure that gives a good life lesion at the end.

It is also fun to picture. Recommended.

Fun and Exciting

My husband read this as a kid and wanted to share it with our daughter. It took some time to get rolling and capture her attention but it was great for bedtime.

The different voices were most helpful in distinguishing the different characters and emotions. Great way to model reading to lower level readers.

No, we read two chapters a day.

I used the audio version as a read along with my 7th grade class. We finished two days before the Christmas break and they were excited. They would come in and talk about how they saw the trailer for the movie that morning, or the night before. They wrote a short chapter review after each chapter and we discussed how the trailer followed the book. After the break, I am sure we will have further discussion on how the book and movie were the same and what were the differences. Overall, having the audio version that followed the book, word for word was a great way to keep them interested in reading.

Wonderful

As part of my WW1 reading I came across this story about a War Horse in WW1 so decided to read it. The narrator, John Keating did a great job reading the story. The story is told from the point of view of the horse just like Black Beauty. The use of the horse Calvary in WW1 was a good example of trying to fight the with the equipment and tactics of the past. Machine guns, tanks and gas made the use of the war horse a disaster. The story has Joey following another war horse through the German lines. He is captured and becomes a German war horse then later he returns to English hands. The boy that raised him joins the army veterinary corp in a hope to find Joey. Read the story you will find it interesting as just a story but you can also learn a bit of history.

Enjoyable

John Keating as always, did a fabulous job of narration.

As an avid horse lover I am always looking for another great horse book. This book is written from the point of view of a horse during WWI and tells of the harsh realities faced by both people and the horses. It doesn't go into so much detail that it wouldn't be safe for children however.

The book is even better than the movie and thats saying a lot considering the movie is great.

Excellent new series

I would place this series in the same type of category as the Harry Potter series with the characters as owls instead of people. It pulls you into the story and carries you along as if you were an owl yourself. I listened to this 3 book set prior to watching the movie, big mistake! As usual, the movie did not do justice to the books and I was so distracted by the inconsistencies between the books and the movie that I couldn't enjoy the movie! I would say the movie was based on the books solely by using the book's name, some character names and the GaHoole tree! While listening to the books, my attention was captured from beginning to end and leaving me wanting more! That's the way you know you've just listened to a winner!!

Could be better

I'm not even five minutes into this audio book and I cannot stop laughing at the narrators voices. The boys sound like young children, and the overall tone sounds like he's narrating a Hardy Boys Secret Files book. Bill Irwin was much better.

Good story, the narration.......

The poor narration was so distracting that it ruined the experience. It sounded more like comedy than mystery to me.

what happened at midnite & cabin island

I don't have much good to say about the reader of these titles....he reads like a 5 yr old reading to a 5 yr old. The previous narrator of the hardy boys series was great..Bill Irwin....don't like this narrator....there is no need to sound like a clown....there's nothing wrong just reading in your natural voice like the previous narrator...that's all....dissapointing

Narration Makes it Sound Like a Spoof

Sometimes, a narrator should just stick to a straight-read. Chris Mannal's intonation and rhythm seems a little off, but I think it might've been manageable if he'd chosen not to do character voices. His voices for the cast are all wrong -- Frank and Joe Hardy sound like little children, Fenton Hardy sounds like the guy who reads movie trailers, and the toughs all sound like extras from Bugs Bunny cartoons. You'd think this was a parody of the Hardy Boys, except the story isn't actually a spoof (the plot is pretty good).

It's kind of a shame, especially since this happened with the Nancy Drew books too. Apparently, with both series, the audio publisher switched from Listening Library to Phoenix Books, and so we lost Bill Irwin and Laura Linney (who did the first batch of Nancy Drew books). Irwin did a fantastic job with the first seven books...he was able to make the books entertaining, while anchoring the overall tone of the mystery. Unfortunately, Mannal isn't up to the task, and made listening to this no fun at all.

Rotten Narration

Apparently Mannal thinks 17 year Joe Hardy should sound like 9 year old.

While Bill Irwin was wonderful in narrating Hardy Boys books one through, Mannal is abysmal in narrating volumes 7 through 10, and ruins the suspension disbelief. Returning or exchanging volumes 8 through 10.
