just read it

i cannot comment on every writer individually because the books sort of ran together for me during a week trip. I read them all and cannot pinpoint every writer.

I can say that they were all wonderful and have great stories mixed with history and geography. They can teach in a great fun exciting atmosphere.

each book continues same excellence

each book in this series maintains the same great narrative. the stories teach history, geography and the arts without seeming to teach. I have enjoyed this teen series and I am far from my teen years.

What made the experience of listening to 11 Birthdays the most enjoyable?

My name is Jackson, and I read this book for Battle of the books. I am 9. I thought it was going to be a girly book, but it wasn't. It was really good. I liked the person who read it. They had great voices and made it sound real. I liked the way the book left you wondering what would happen next. You were rooting for the two main characters the whole time. you wanted them to succeed. You'd think it would be boring to repeat a day, but this book was not boring. It had us all hooked.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the twist. You'll have to read it to see what I mean. No spoliers from me.

Which character as performed by Kathleen McInerney was your favorite?

The old lady with the duck shaped birthmark!

It builds up and resets so much. I didn't cry, but I yelled out frustrated every time the day repeated.

Perfect Family listening

Veteran narrator Kathleen McInerney is perfectly matched with author Wendy Mass in this naturalistic book about 11 year old Amanda and her best boy friend Leo - with a touch of magic realism thrown in to help them get through a year of being on the outs with each other. This story captivated our whole family (including girls ages 8 and 11) on a 6 hour drive last weekend - I only wished it had been 30 minutes longer because as soon as it finished the "I'm bored" chorus started. McInerney deftly handles both narration and the true to life dialogue.

creative storyline

It is obvious the writer is creative and detailed in his detective storyline. The story is fast paced and will keep a reader engaged. The audio reader/voice is enjoyable to listen to.

My boys love this book

My boys, age 9 and 7, love this book. I must admit that I enjoyed it as well. We listened on a long car ride -- the story opens with a kid (who loves detective stories) assigned a class project on quilting. He goes begrudgingly to the library to check out the only book about quilting, when he is accosted by people wearing dark clothes, jumping through windows and trying to capture him. Thus begins a mystery about how librarians are bigger special agents than the FBI. It is funny, engaging, well-written and more adventure than scary. A great listen for kids (and parents) who want more than Diary of a Wimpy Kid and are well-beyond Encyclopedia Brown.

Amazing!

The narrator was amazing, and had different voices for each cat. It fits with the feelings of characters, and the drama. I love the this book series. I highly advise people who like adventure stories to read the story.

Best narrator

Kathleen McInerney can be a tom, a she-cat, and a playful kit and more perfectly. She is the best warriors narrator out of all. Far better than Nanette Savard.

I love it a great book! It has so much drama. And the voices of the cats kinda tell there feelings!

Great listening

This book got us through a long road trip. The kids loved it! A bit confusing at first, but the names of the cats start becoming clear in a short time.

Did not really grab me until near the end.

Do take note that this is from Harper Children's Audio. The narrator lends a cartoonish aspect where even many of the older characters still sound like children--which can be hard to listen to at first. There were also so many names being thrown around, that initially it was hard to follow and to know which of the characters were of actual consequence to the plot. Otherwise the story line was okay, but I probably won't go out of my way to get more books in the series.

Great Listen

This was a delightful story about the love of family, nature, and life in general. I really enjoyed this story and the fun relationship between Grandfather and Granddaughter. Despite the name of the book evolution isn't use in it's typical argumentative state in this book. Rather it refers to the ever changing and evolving person we become as we grow and mature.

A Lovely Coming of Age Story

Set in turn of the century Texas, this sweet coming of age story is fun and informative. Calpurnia is the only daughter in her farm family, but she's not interested in learning how to cook or sew or be a lady. She's interested in science, and especially in Mr. Charles Darwin's new book on The Evolution of Species. She isn't allowed to check it out from the library, but then discovers her gruff old Grandfather who is always off in the woods and keeps to himself, not only has a copy of Mr. Darwin's book, but has exchanged letters with him! Calpurnia and her Grandfather traipse around the woods, observing and categorizing the many species of plants, animals and insects they encounter. As Calpurnia learns about the world around her using the scientific method, she also begins to learn about life and growing up and what her own dreams and expectations are.

The Evolution of Capurnia Tate

A nice story about the relationship between a young girl and her grandfather. I listened to this book because it was on my daughters summer reading list. Begining was a bit slow but looking back, I really enjoyed the story. and so did my daughter.

Calpurnia was a spunky girl in a time when spunky was not appreciated. We enjoyed the story but it seemed to be dummied up a bit. I assume it was written for young girls.

Touching and Relevant

Story:

My 9 year old son and I listened to this touching story of Joey Pigza, his struggles with impulse control, ADHD, some really complex emotions and an imperfect mother who loves him fiercely. Joey gets kicked out of school after a series of accidents brought on by his poor choices & impulse control issues. He gets sent to a scary special school where he struggles to turn things around so when his 6 week suspension is up, he'll be alowed back into his class. The reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because there is so much emphasis placed on finding the right medication and I would have really liked to see some more emphasis on the coping skills that Joey learned. Great story overall and great depiction of struggles with ADHD.

About the triggers:

This book touches on the abuse of Joey by his grandmother in two scenes - one scene, toward the beginning of the book, she tries unsuccessfully to lock him in the refrigerator and immediately after she runs away and doesn't appear in the rest of the book. The other scene, Joey reveals some mental abuse by the grandma where she forced him to act like a dog and hit him with a flyswatter if he didn't. The book reveals Joey's mother used to have a drinking problem and his absent father still does. His father doesn't appear in this book. No drunkenness is depicted in the story.

Dear Mr. Henshaw is a good book with a lot of details. This book is about a young boy named Lee Bots . Lee sends letters to Mr. Henshaw about his books , and for school. Lee gets mad when Mr. Henshaw gives him questions . His mom makes him answer them , but he Ansers with your discussed reader. Mr. Henshaw gives Lee an idea to write in a diary. It works! He writes a lot of things and in joys it . He writes a book for school and gets to eat lunch with an author. The author called Lee an author . Lee was very happy. He had a problems with his lunch other kids kept taking the good stuff , so he made an alarm for it. His parents are devorsed. His dad is always on the road. Lee's mom makes treats for partys . Witty letter dealing with sincere issue

I loved this witty Leah's letter to Mr. Henshaw. He is dealing with serious issue (parents' divorce) yet he handles with wit. I love this novel.

Good kids biography of da Vinci

This was an excellent introduction to da Vinci for my son, but enjoyable for me as well. I like the tone and length for a biography for children. This whole series of books is excellent and my children have listened to these for fun. I have enjoyed them all too. The narrator is great as well. Highly recommended!

I'm the parent writing this after finishing this audible with my son. we get the audibles to go with the books we are reading. it helps to reinforce what he's read and helps him comprehend better. this was a great read/listen! my son loves art, that's why he chose Di Vinci. he stopped it many times to talk about facts. I can see myself getting more who was books/audibles!

Haunting

Laurie Halse Anderson is a phenomenal story teller. I read her book Speak in 1 day, one of her best. This story was intriguing, disturbing, and heartwarming.

The one thing I didn't like is how they audibly handled what I assume are cross outs in the written from of the book. There are beeps and odd volume adjustments. I think I'd rather hear a vocal change rather than an "editing" change. I think Jeannie Stith could have acted the "cross outs" without the annoying beeps. I personally don't like that directorial? choice. I'm curious to see how other audio productions handle that challenge
