Dissatisfied

Would you try another book from Mick Fleetwood and/or Martin Dew?

If you looking to hear about how all those great tunes came into being, sadly the books doesn't deliver. Also Martin's reading becomes boring after a while.

A Fascinating Syory

Some years ago Mick Fleetwood published his autobiography and I must say it was without doubt the best book about music Id ever read.

This audiobook is not an update to that original title but a complete re-write of his story, and brings the story right up to their 2014 world tour. Ill admit I approached this with some trepidation as I thought it might just re-hash the previous book. But not so, and Im very happy to say that Mr Fleetwood does not disappoint in any way as this title is every bit as fresh and engaging as his first. Fleetwood has also taken the interesting step of not relying only on his own memories of events but has taken the time to talk with past colleagues, friends and even ex-wives to ensure he presents an even telling of the story.

In this age of instant game-show 15-minute stardom people can forget just how long Mick and the various versions of his band have been on the scene. From the early blues scene in London with Peter Green to the heady days of mega-stardom with the revamped band and Buckingham/Nicks the pace never falters.

Touching, riotous, and so much more

First, I purchased this book because Joan Wilson is the reader. She is outstanding here, as always. The book itself is a joy, even with its sadnesses. Life. Mortimer's letters show deep affection, hilarious commentary, and a refreshing humility and honesty. An absolute pleasure.

Great content - irritating 'sing song' narrator

Thoroughly enjoyed author's reflections about her dad former journalist Roger Mortimer.

BUT: Sadly, for me, the female narrator's voice was intensely irritating when assuming character of Roger in a 'sing song' manner. Narrator (not the author reading) needs to brush up her RP as well as dropped a couple of flat 'a's! Really let the cat out! Very faux public school.

Shame that two performers were not used to distinguish between voice of female author and the voice of the subject of the biog Roger. The brother's book 'Dear Lupin' had a fabulous pair of performers - Nicky Henson whom I think read 'Roger's' part would have been ideal again.

Hope the other sister Lumpy and second book by the son Lupin make it to audible too - currently they haven't.

Both the family's books so far bring the late Roger to life with great humour - he must have been a fabulous dad and dinner party guest!

Remarkable 20th Century History of Comic Strips

Would you consider the audio edition of Peanuts, Pogo, and Hobbes to be better than the print version?

Bob Neufeld's narration of "Peanuts, Pogo, and Hobbes" makes me feel like I'm actually listening to the voice of George Lockwood, telling me the fascinating history of his career.

What other book might you compare Peanuts, Pogo, and Hobbes to and why?

This audiobook is incomparable. No other narrative fully recounts how meaningfully comic strips have affected American history.

Which scene was your favorite?

I most enjoyed Lockwood sharing the overall narratives of his favorite comic strips, usually adventure strips, such as "Terry and the Pirates" and "Dick Tracy". I also enjoyed Lockwood recounted how the popularity of adventure strips transitioned into gag strips.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I wish there were more books like this, but this is the only one, which in its own way, makes it a real treasure.

For anyone seeking to learn the history of comic strips, or interested in becoming a comic strip artist, this book is for you. It's absolutely brilliant. I've listened to it many times. R.I.P. Mr. Lockwood, and thank you for this great book.

Wickedly Engaging

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Especially fans of the television series Doctor Who (1963-89, 1994, 2005- ). It is a wonderful insight into the production of classic Doctor who.

What did you like best about this story?

Due to the subject matter, this book is largely for fans of the television series Doctor Who, and it was entertaining, funny and delightful.

Matthew has an excellent voice for narrating and is excellent with his voice characterisation and energetic portrayal of his stories. His sharing of what it is like to be both a childhood fan of a tv institution such as Doctor Who and then find what the reality is like when he joins that same show (good and bad) is really fascinating.

I appreciated his candid sharing and really for the most part it was very humble and earthy. occasionally it was barbed and a touch bitter, but it clearly reflects the wounds of his time in th at role. It becomes clear that some expected too much of an eighteen year old who had started in a major television show with not a lot of prior experience and who was struggling at times to deal as best he could with his own insecurities and issues let alone others. The only thing i found off-putting was his use of the third person when referring to himself. The book was originally written in the third person but how i wished Matthew had just changed it to "I" and "me" in the audio narration.

Tales of Privilege

I love Louis Auchincloss--his fiction is witty and surprisingly nuanced. So when I saw that he had a memoir, I snapped it up. And it doesn't disappoint. Auchincloss, the very model of East Coast establishment, writes a fast-paced story of his life. Unfortunately, I think he waited a little late in the day, because this is far too brief a look at his life. I wonder if his own reluctance to divulge too much is not just symptomatic of the class into which he was born. Auchincloss was the product of privilege and perhaps most surprising is his very dismissive take on his own talent. I personally think that he is a severely underrated author and think he deserves far more appreciation than he is afforded. What this book is good at is evoking a world where servants and wealth are the norm, and the life of the author is very much like that of a Bertie Wooster. Still, this is an enjoyable glimpse of a world where the inhabitants are completely sheltered from the cares and sorrows that most people experienced then and now. Perhaps the thing that I always wondered about was how a person so cocooned from the everyday lives of the 99% could show so much humanity.

Powerful Thoughts, But Doesn't Add Up To A Powerful Message

Before picking up this book I was familiar with David Shields, having read "Black Planet," "The Thing About Life Is That One Day You Will Be Dead," and "Reality Hunger" and a few other of his essays. Shields is both brutally honest emotionally and intellectually super-powered; for instance in "Black Planet" he combines a racial study of the NBA along with personal revelations that he imagines that he is as "long and lean" as Gary Payton while having sex with his wife.

In "How Literature Saved My Life" Shields misses his mark. Ostensibly this is a work about - like the title says - how literature saved his life. However, literature really didn't save his life. Like many reviewers, I thought I was headed for a work on the loneliness and alienation of modern society and the redemptive powers of literature. Shields hints at this, but most of this work is about the literature he likes and how most of literature fails him. In fact, he hasn't read much literature since the late 1990's (pg 124). What Shields has been more focused on is the pursuit of a new literary form, one he calls collage, that would exist on the "bleeding edge" of genres between fiction and non-fiction and memoir and essay. These are the books that Shields writes about, the ones he loves, the one he quotes from and recommends. That's a big part of this book - as well as much of this book is an argument why he published "Reality Hunger" which was pretty tiresome since it is not that interesting and not that easy to relate to.

Still, Shields' voice is powerful enough that it kept me intrigued the entire time, and I'm sure this will be a book I reread passages of continually. Shields will deconstruct himself, including the less pleasant parts of himself, with exacting laser vision and leave himself bare to the reader.

Short Bio on Thoreau is Worth It!

Disclaimer: I am an avid audiobook listener, especially biographies. I wanted this on audio. So I called my brother who is an audio engineer and said, let's make an audiobook for the experience. So we spent 3 days in his studio and recorded it, got my book designing friend to design a cover and submitted it to Audible, iTunes, etc. Good experience, but obviously my reading skills are not on par with accomplished narrators!

Whether you read it or listen to it, I think you will benefit from this short bio on Thoreau.

This book, written by Ralph Waldo Emerson's son (who was 18 at the date of Thoreau's death) is an excellent short biography of Thoreau. Edward Emerson does a great job of countering criticisms of Thoreau. One of the quotes I will remember is "to his lonely happiness the world will owe the best gifts he has left."

He was certainly a happy, but also a lonely man. Edward remembers him as both. Henry was kind to the children especially of the Emerson household. The short 50 or so pages/just over 2 hrs on audio is well worth it. After reading this book I began to connect Thoreau's life to that of Jesus' and Socrates. They both were outcasted by the society who didn't understand them, they both were friends to outcasts and dedicated to their ideals. Thoreau was certainly a prophetic voice carrying ideas and ramifications into our own time period.

I started at 4 stars, but considering the brief nature of the book, I think the investment is well worth the yield. Everyone needs some Thoreau in their life, and this is a great addition/brief picture of his life to augment one's reading of his works.

An introduction to the lives of 6 Great Composers with music!

This is a delightful audible book on the lives of 6 famous composers for grades 3-6. Along with a biography of the artist there are samples of the composers works to introduce young people to classical music.

The composers are:1.Vivaldi

2.Bach

3.Mozart

4.Beethoven

5.Dvorak

6.Shostakovich

Each section explains the challenges and eccentricities of the famous composer and it will keep children entertained. Marin Alsop does a wonderful job of narrating along with the occasional sound effects thrown in for good measure.

I recently took a classical music course for adults and it awoke in me a new love of classical music and I believe this book could do the same for young people.

Very Interesting!

My 10-year-old son LOVES listening to these CDs, and I have to admit that my husband and I both enjoy them as well. Many hours in the car have been pleasant because my son is engaged in listening. The accounts of each composer are tastefully done and give quite a bit of interesting detail into the composer's life and personality. We have checked them out from our library many times and my son would now like us to purchase them because he enjoys listening to them so much. I only wish they would make more as there are many more composers still to study.

Embarrassingly bad, even for a seven-year old

This is clearly a presentation intended for children, but it is not indicated what age group is being targeted. The narration assumes no sophistication on the part of the listener, nor does it attempt to broaden or encourage more focused listening skills on the part of the child. Among the musical selections played are the most un-Shostakovichian work of the composer's, the variations on "Tea for Two" and the Romance from the film Gadfly, evidently in an attempt to sweeten the presentation. A portion of the Second Piano Concerto is played, and then the child is asked if the quote of the song, "What Do We Do With A Drunken Sailor" was heard in the score. Why in the world would a child be familiar with this somewhat esoteric World War II era song? A recording of the song outside its compositional context should have been played, which would have made the concerto example more meaningful. But this opportunity was overlooked.

Why People Call Morrissey A Twat

I came to this audiobook not knowing very much about Morrissey except what I had interpreted from his music.

The first section of the book was fascinating, his childhood, schooldays and I particularly enjoyed the story of how Morrissey began to fall in love with music and the music that inspired him to become a singer. The writing is heartfelt, warm and leads you into a possibly premature fondness for the guy.

The Story of the Smiths formation and career though is terribly underdone. You would imagine The Smiths period of his life would take quite some time to detail but it is almost casually slapped down - a collection of random anecdotes which make no linear sense and give improper credit to the legacy of the band and its place as a stepping stone into his solo work. At this point in the book, Morrissey does goes to some effort to almost fondly credit the other members of the Smiths for their various contributions to the music, despite the acrimonious issues that were to follow after the breakup of the band.

What follows after the "story of the Smiths" is confusing though.
