Title: Five Children and It

Author: Edith Nesbit

Narrator: Cathy Dobson

Format: Unabridged

Length: 5 hrs and 44 mins

Language: English

Release date: 07-22-11

Publisher: Red Door Audiobooks

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 10 votes

Genres: Classics, British Literature

Publisher's Summary:

First written in 1902, this is one of Edith Nesbit's best loved children's stories. It all begins when a group of five children Robert, Anthea, Cyril, Jane, and their baby brother, the Lamb - move from London to the countryside of Kent. While playing in a gravel pit, they discover a rather grumpy, ugly and occasionally malevolent sand-fairy known as the Psammead who is compelled to grant one wish of theirs per day.

The effects of each wish last until sundown. All the wishes granted to the children go hilariously wrong. When they wish to be beautiful, nobody recognises them and they are shut out of the house. When they wish to be rich, they get a stack of gold coins but nobody will take them. When they wish for wings they find themselves stuck on a tall tower at sunset. When they wish that their baby brother was older, he turns into a grown-up and bosses them about. When Robert wishes he was bigger than the baker's boy (who has beaten him in a scrap) he becomes eleven feet tall. There are many more adventures... but you will need to listen and find out for yourselves....

Critic Reviews:

"The book is lighthearted and funny, as the children get into all sorts of impossible and hilarious situations. It has been enjoyed by several generations of children and their parents, and will be enjoyed by several more." (Rohini Chowdhury)

Title: How to Speak and Write Correctly

Author: Joseph Devlin

Narrator: Shawn Grisden

Format: Unabridged

Length: 4 hrs and 27 mins

Language: English

Release date: 01-25-12

Publisher: Audible Studios

Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 2 votes

Genres: Classics, British Literature

Publisher's Summary:

This book has no pretension about it whatever - it is neither a Manual of Rhetoric, expatiating on the dogmas of style, nor a Grammar full of arbitrary rules and exceptions. It is merely an effort to help ordinary, everyday people to express themselves in ordinary, everyday language, in a proper manner. Some broad rules are laid down, the observance of which will enable the reader to keep within the pale of propriety in oral and written language. Many idiomatic words and expressions, peculiar to the language, have been given, besides which a number of the common mistakes and pitfalls have been placed before the reader so that he may know and avoid them.

Editorial Reviews:

The English explained here is the formal, classical variety. Harold Bloom would love the chapter dedicated to figurative language, in which sophisticated components like synecdoche and metonymy are discussed. The text has a vintage feel; some expressions and contexts seem outdated. But the corrective lessons provided here are valuable in the present. English is morphing quickly in the information age. A foundational understanding of the language will help listeners to write and speak intentionally in an era of linguistic cheats and distortions. Narrator Shawn Grisdens brisk yet fey performance of author Devlins mannered text will transport listeners to the freshman classrooms of year 1910. Grisdens old-fashioned voice will help listeners enjoy the nostalgia while learning.

Publisher's Summary:

Sexually innocent Jude Fawley is trapped into marriage by seductive Arabella Donn, but their union is an unhappy one and Arabella leaves him. Jude's welcome freedom allows him to pursue his obsession with his pretty cousin Sue Bridehead, a brilliant, charismatic free-thinker who would be his ideal soul mate if not for her aversion to physical love. When Jude and Sue decide to lead their lives outside marriage they bring down on themselves all the force of a repressive society. This fearless and outspoken story caused a furor on its publication, and was Hardy's last novel.

Title: Lady Chatterley's Lover

Author: D. H. Lawrence

Narrator: Katherine Littrell

Format: Unabridged

Length: 12 hrs and 9 mins

Language: English

Release date: 08-02-16

Publisher: Spoken Realms

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 28 votes

Genres: Classics, British Literature

Publisher's Summary:

Lady Chatterley's Lover is D. H. Lawrence's last novel. First published privately in 1928, Lady Chatterley's Lover was banned from wider publication in the UK until 1960 and was the subject of censorship and book banning in the United States and elsewhere. Its erotic subject material, colorful language, and discussion of interclass relations were deemed obscene.

Now deemed a classic work of artistic merit written before its time, D.H. Lawrence's thoughtfully penned novel scrutinizes marriage, infidelity, and the things people do to achieve physical and emotional happiness. The novel's frank approach to sex and desire infuses Lady Chatterley's Lover with a modern sensibility that rings as true and thought-provoking in the present as upon its first scandalous publication.
