Captivating

What made the experience of listening to The Elephant to Hollywood the most enjoyable?

I found Michael Caine to be a surprisingly candid and open author. The book is touching and almost sweet. I am amazed by his sense of gratitude for his apparent 'good fortune' and his humility regarding his ability as an actor.

I particularly enjoyed Michael recounting Christmases and why they are so special to him, His need for family closeness.

The unique character behind the story. I think all biographies should be read by their subjects, it adds another dimension that might have been lost being read by someone else

Absolutely loved it. Listened to it on an 18 hour drive to Italy, played it going, and just had to play it again on the way back. Not once did we get bored or weren't fully immersed in the story. There was silence in the car for the whole journey! :)

Entertaining

This narration is really fresh and enjoyable. I love when Michael Caine chuckles and sometimes practically laughs out loud. You feel like you are in a pub with him and listening to him reminisce about the old days. Thoroughly entertaining!

Without a doubt....a fantastic one!

If you are a parent (even more fittingly a father) you will laugh until you cry. The diaper chapter had me calling all of my friends (who were fathers) and describing how they MUST listen to Jay read his book. It seemed as he was speaking to me as if it were my own story. Every fall I spend hundreds of hours in a tractor during harvest and I listen to it each year. Every year that passes, as my own children grow I can relate to and laugh at more and more of this hilarious authors tales. 1000% GREAT BOOK!

I love Jay Mohr and Knew this book had to be good.

Turns out its GREAT. Not to sound corny but this book really did make me cry and laugh at the same time.

Critical book for any father

I have two children, and I found it very easy to connect with Jay Mohr. His stories were of the sort that most people could relate to. The entertainment value was incredible. At many times, I couldn't stop listening to the story. On top of that, I asked Jay some questions about his book on twitter, and he responded. Buying Jay's book on Audible was undoubtedly worthwhile. I liked the story so much I bought paper copies for friends. Please, if you haven't bought this yet, stop wasting time and buy it already!

Many laughs...

Even those without children can relate to the stories that Jay Mohr tells us. I laughed much throughout the book. it was like attending a comedy concert live! Not only is the subject humorous, but Jay also shares the lessons that he has learned and that all parents should learn. I love the voice he used when his son was speaking and tha narration was great.

Save your money the "letters" take up about 28 pages front and back in this 179 page book. The rest does not really apply.

I rarely do reviews for books these days but long ago did watch thier t.v show. At the time I was beginning to write a letter to my new born son, over the years, one that I would finish and give to him when he is older and can appreciate it. I thought that was what I would find in this book. Letters to her children, long letters, that befits each and every special one. This was published in 2010. So she had six years to write meaningful letters to her eight children. They fell very short and seemed almost informal. If I had read any of those as a child especially the youngest six I would feel that a stranger could have done as well. The common theme was you were all born at the same time and in the hospital a long long time. Then maybe a sentence personal to the child. Like Alixis, her name was picked out for their 3rd child, before they decided to try for just one more. Then Hannah , you were the first one I got to hold in the NICU, while the rest is a repeat on how hard it was to keep them really just moaning of how it is taking care of her kids. The rest of the chapters were accounts of what seemed random events. I thought maybe they would lead up to something special happening to a certain hild there but no that wasn not it. The first chapter was about her trying to go out to eat at a resturant all kids in tow in their very young years and a dog licking her leg. Yes, a near chapter on a dog licking her leg and how angry that made her no mention of fear for the kids safety, but she made sure to say this was her first incident of being recognized from the show. This book was not made for her kids. It was made for her. If you gave the letters when they say graduate high school I would have used the years in between and would have made sure each letter was very long. Hand written and very specific about each child in great detail. I know that she can not manage the one on one time a normal parent would. But she does have help in her two oldest kids not to mention the nannies. So she could have allotted time during the week even an hour or two of one on one would be so beneficial and maybe she could write letters that are meaningful enough she would not feel right selling them to publisher's. The most irksome think I have found in any of her books is her talking about how hard it is to care for them. Yet she has time to always have makeup on and hair done ( when filming) time to train to do marathons. When they decided to keep all of these kids. They knew exactly what they were in for. They had too as they had twins the first time and can not use the young mother with no idea of parenthood.

If you could sum up The First Star in three words, what would they be?

Hard to believe.

What other book might you compare The First Star to and why?

Fifty-Nine in 84. What they had Grange do was as insane as what happened in that book.

Which scene was your favorite?

Overall the barnstorming tour was incredible. I am amazed any of the Bears survived the tour. 3 games in 3 days? Really? 18 games in 10 days? None of this would have been allowed today. The players on the other teams that punched him and hurt him were pretty stupid. They were too dumb to realize that his success would help them in the long run.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I broke it up. It was well written but was too depressing at times when you realize the stupidity and greed of those involved. Grange made money, sure, but the promoters and Hallas really played him.

Insightful history told in an excellent tenor

Lars Anderson does a wonderful job of combining sports with the larger societal framework. Papadakis, often shrill on his radio program, brings just the right tone to the reading. One that can be listened to again and again.

I don't know what she accomplished with this book

11/1: So I've always wondered why there were two mom's on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and didn't realize that there was drama associated with the switch. Apparently Janet Hubert was railroaded out of Hollywood because of the split up. She certainly has no love lost for Will Smith. I definitely preferred the show when she was the mom, and it will be interesting to hear her take on why she was removed. I'm listening to this as an audiobook where she's the narrator and it's excellent so far. She reads it exactly as I remember her acting. I'm definitely enjoying it so far.

11/4: So I'm sorry I used one of my free audible credits on this book. It would have been better borrowed from the library. It's hard to critique someone's memoir - it's kind of like saying "I don't like your life", but the person's life is what it is. :-) But by the end of the book I was tired. She whined a lot, I felt. She was indeed "done wrong" by Smith and the studio - if you accept her version of the story - and a lot of awful things happened to her as a result of getting kicked off the show, but some of it was the result of crazy decisions she made. And she kept flip-flopping throughout the book - she hated what the cast did to her, but she's always wondering what they're doing. Really? The book is also a bit disjointed in places as she jumps back and forth between stories, but she said she wanted to tell the story "in her own words" without any editors or publishers telling her what to say.

Anyway, I'm she was able to get her life back under control, but this book didn't really do anything for me. You kind of want memoirs to inspire you or at least make you think. She confirms that Hollywood is a crazy place, but we already knew that. :-)

I think you can safely skip this one. There's also quite a bit of swearing in it, if that bothers you.

Not great

I'm a big Hamilton/Mclaren fan, so I was excited to download this title. The early parts of the story are interesting, detailing Hamilton's rise through the karting and lower formula series on his way to F1.

Unfortunately, even casual F1 fans that were watching the 2007 season will know 98% of the F1 information presented already. The F1 portions are mostly recaps of the races from '07, including a complete reading of the race result and drivers championship standings after every race. In other words, the reader will tell you about a dozen times that Sebastian Vettel has 1 point. These readings total up to at least 10 minutes of listen time.

In addition, the glowing way in which Hughes portrays Hamilton gets a bit tiring and redundant after a while. It seems that every move Hamilton makes on track is "inspired" and "flawless". At times, it sounds more like a fan blog than something worth paying for.

Lewis Hamilton is undoubtedly a gifted driver with a long career ahead of him. I recommend waiting till the full story can be told. In the meantime, the Murray Walker audiobook is excellent.

A Brilliant overview of a Brilliant talent

What did you love best about Lewis Hamilton?

For anyone who would like to have an overview of the genius called Hamilton up to his World championship this is an ideal place to start. From the day he received his first remote controlled car to the time he started out at McLaren. It gives a complete and meticulous breakdown of the stormy relationship of himself and Alonso. At the most significant episodes during their fight for dominance. Also his rise as a kid through the ranks of motorsport.

The only small criticism is the skipping over some of the important moments like when he met Ron Dennis as a kid. I think it was probably the moment that changed his life. Also some other relationships e.g Rosberg.

But other than this- it is probably a very very good summary.

I rated hime as full marks - because he allowed the story to the foreground. And allowed it to tel itself.

Disappointing!

I had high hopes for this book having loved her book "Spilling the beans" which I strongly recommend. I found this book to be boring and rambling in parts. It was disjointed, far too self indulgently preaching about country sports and a huge disappointment to me. Choose something else!

This is Second Book
