    WONDERFUL
I have never written a review but I have listened to over 400 books. I have listened to two books by Kirk Douglas. This one was simply WONDERFUL Jason Alexander was perfect. I loved every minute and hated to hear it end.
    Spartacus still rules!
Mr. Douglas has done a fine job of reflecting and giving some very wise words of wisdom to the rest of us. He comes across as someone you would love to sit down and talk with. He has shown his faults and regrets but does not dwell on them. He appears to be a man of convictions based on research and common sense, not on what might be the popular, 'Hollywood' thing to do. I'm open anytime he would like to have coffee.
    Thank you Kirk Douglas
I have listened to so many books on tape but have never had the desire to write a review before listening to "Let's Face It". I absolutely loved it. It was inspiring, educational and enjoyable. His story telling is fantastic and Jason Alexander narrates it so well. Kirk Douglas' account of his past, his relationship with his parents, his wife and children was instrumental in developing the Kirk that he is today. His life experiences are enriching, not just for himself but for the readers. It seems he learned so much in the past 90 years and has a great desire to make a true difference in this world, not as an actor, but as a human being who is concerned about his fellow man and the future generation.
    Lovely.
Jason alexander is fabulous. I wanted to hear wisdom from someone who has lived 90 years. kirk Douglas was a great success in his career. enjoyed the best life has to offer and yet it was not without some pain. Surprisingly warm, sometimes funny, sometimes sad, sometimes morose, a little dottering. it was a nice read.
    Half great, half bad
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Probably not. When he's talking about his life, it's terrific. When he's talking about world issues, it's just a guy ranting.
Would you ever listen to anything by Kirk Douglas again?
Yes, a full autobiography would be fascinating.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Jason Alexander?
    Yes, good narration.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
This book doesn't lend itself to becoming a movie.
    Any additional comments?
About half of this book is about Kirk Douglas, his life in Hollywood, and his career as an actor. The other half is him talking about world problems and what he thinks should be done. What's fascinating about Douglas is his career. Listening to his personal opinions on issues is just like sitting and listening to any other old guy talk about his view on the world. If he's your uncle, you sit and politely listen.

Good story! but she's not the Aussie Sandra!
This is an interesting, somewhat inspiring memoir, read very nicely by the author. Not great or earth-shaking, but really quite interesting hearing all the details about how she was able to climb from low to high. A really nice aspect was how I felt I could relate - how I could feel I was in her shoes with her struggles & successes.
Her start as a child was ugly and difficult, but not as horrific as she seems to think it was - more dysfunctional (yes, very much so) than disastrous. It does indeed have the appearance of less than auspicious beginnings, but this is true of many who rise to great heights. And not everyone is fortunate enough to have the unwavering support she had from her grandmother, even if often from afar. Having someone who believes in you and to whom you can always turn IS a blessing common to those who work their way up from great depths to great success, and many acknowledge and remark that they would not have succeeded without that grace.
Likewise, her successes appear to be made in no small part of incredible good fortune - I was rather amazed at how she rather "magically" transformed what seemed (to me, at least) as a rather mundane and relatively common talent into a blockbuster. She started by selling a window dressing - what I marveled at more than her talent, hard work (she DID work very hard), and business savvy, was how many people wanted window dressings, to be her customers!! I had no idea!! Then again, I'm not at all familiar with her work, maybe it's beyond fabulous. In fact, I'm not familiar with her at all, had never heard of her before.

    Title: Spilling the Beans
    Author: Clarissa Dickson Wright
    Narrator: Clarissa Dickson Wright
    Format: Abridged
Length: 1 hr and 52 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-10-07
    Publisher: Hodder Headline Limited
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 35 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
As a privileged child, shooting and hunting were the norm, and pigeons were flown in from Cairo for supper. Clarissa's mother was an Australian heiress; her father was a brilliant surgeon to the Royal family. But he was also a tyrannical and violent drunk who used to beat her and force her to eat carrots with slugs still clinging to them.
Clarissa was determined and clever, though, and her ambition led her to a career in the law. At the age of 21, she was the youngest-ever woman to be called to the Bar. Then disaster struck when her adored mother died suddenly. It was to lead to a mind-numbing decade of wild over-indulgence. Rich from her inheritance, in the end Clarissa had partied away her entire fortune.
It was a long, hard road to recovery, along which Clarissa finally faced her demons and turned to the one thing that had always brought her joy: cooking. Now at last she has found success, sobriety, and peace. With the stark honesty and the brilliant wit we love her for, Clarissa recounts the tale of a life lived to extremes. A vivid and funny story, this audiobook is as moving as it is a cracking good listen.

Clarissa is a Character in the Truest Sense
What made the experience of listening to Spilling the Beans the most enjoyable?
The honesty was brutal. She lived a fascinating life and hit the highest highs and lowest lows in her time with us.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Clarissa Dickson Wright of course. She was truly, one-of-a-kind.
What three words best describe Clarissa Dickson Wrights voice?
Droll: aptly humorous and timely without trying. It is genuine and earnest. And yes... funny.
Sensitive: clinical at early on, but you feel the heartache when her heart aches.
Resilient: few have the staying power that Clarissa states as matter-of-fact. Simply stated, it was the way it was.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The point where this "tough one" relates the loss of her dog due to the depths of alcoholism was incredibly moving to me. For all of Clarissa's strength, there is a most fragile heart revealed in moments like these.
    Any additional comments?
"Spilling the Beans" is an easy listen and a brief one too. I enjoyed it. Perhaps more so because I was new to her story. I arrived here not as an ardent fan rather knowing her merely as one of "The Fat Ladies" and casually so. Upon getting wind of who this woman actually was, I realized that this was a woman of depth with a compelling story to tell. At that, I wasted no time finding this book and am glad for it.
a good read about her life .inspirational
many parts left me laughing out loud and also tearing up. she is an inspiration to those with fought beginnings
    Refreshing and inspirational!
Inspire of her many challenges, Clarissa always presents her life with a sense of hope and delight. An excellent story.
    Enchanting throughout! A must read!
Beautifully written. A glorious use of language, beautifully read. Honest emotion affects Clarissa's reading at certain points and is all the more moving for it. I adored this book and didn't want it to end. Honest, funny, sad and insightful. Loved it!
    Interesting

    Title: Running the Table
Subtitle: The Legend of Kid Delicious, the Last Great American Pool Hustler
    Author: L. Jon Wertheim
    Narrator: L. Jon Wertheim
    Format: Abridged
Length: 5 hrs and 55 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-17-07
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
In most sports the pinnacle is Wheaties-box notoriety. But in the world of pool, notoriety is the last thing a hustler desires. Such is the dilemma that faces one Danny Basavich, an affable, generously proportioned Jewish kid from Jersey, who flounders through high school until he discovers the one thing he excels at - the felt - and hits the road.
Running the Table spins the outrageous tale of Kid Delicious and his studly, if less talented, set-up man, Bristol Bob. Never was there a more entertaining or mismatched pair of sidekicks, as together they go underground into the flavorfully seamy world of pool to learn the art of the hustle and experience the highs and lows of life on the road. Their four-year odyssey takes them from Podunk pool halls to slick urban billiard rooms across America, as they manage one night to take down as much as $30,000 - only to lose so much the next night that they lack gas money to get home.
With every stop, the action gets hotter, the calls get closer, and Delicious' prowess with a cue stick becomes known more and more widely. Ultimately, Delicious sheds his cover once and for all and becomes professional pool's biggest sensation since Minnesota Fats.
In a book sure to appeal to fans of Bringing Down the House and Positively Fifth Street, Wertheim evokes a subculture full of nefarious but lovable characters and illuminates America's fascination with games and gambling. He also paints a lasting portrait of an insanely talented and magnetic hustler, who is literally larger than life.
    Critic Reviews:
"Wertheim's eloquent and vivid prose...perfectly captures the squalid, sepia-toned environs of America's billiard halls." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
Funny and sad look at what it takes to get really good at pool, and how to not make money being the best at a sport.
Funny tale of a fat guy who learned to play pool living in a trashy poolroom with a bunch of other ne'er do wells, everyone living hand to mouth and trying to out hustle each other and the world, while staying one step ahead of their next bath and using the alley in back as a toilet. It takes a full time dedication to pool, plus at least one mentor plus lots of losing a backer's money, to get good enough to beat a few others and join the crowd of starving pool players, pros without a tour, everyone starving except a very few who got lucky or happened into some remunerative situation outside of trying to win the cheap pool tournament money prizes available. Even the best, even those who once won big bucks, by the time they are in their forties or fifties they are near broke, and realize they should have stayed with their job at UPS and tried to advance their, instead of playing pool fifteen hours a day seven days a week, earning just enough pool winnings to stay broke and to play the ponies which makes sure they stay broke. Show me a successful pool player and I will show you a married guy whose wife has a good paying job and won't let daddy get at her paycheck.
Nice stories, intereresting characters, well written.
A good book, and well written.

    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 99 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Courageously honest, downright inspiring, and just a little bit saucy, Paula shares the highs and the lows of her life in her inimitable charming and irreverent style. She talks about her childhood, the difficulty of her first marriage, and how the death of her beloved parents precipitated a debilitating agoraphobia that crippled her for years. But even when the going got tough, Paula never lost the good grace and sense of humor that would eventually help carry her to success and stardom.
Whether she's telling tales of good times or bad, Paula Deen speaks as frankly and intimately in this memoir as few women in the public eye have ever dared. Her story is proof that the good, old-fashioned American dream is alive and kicking, and there is still such a thing as a real-life happy ending.
    Critic Reviews:
"Her voice is measured and her messages and philosophies are culled from a life of climbing many of life's mountains - divorces, deep-seated fear and panic attacks, financial insecurity - that many of the women who adore her also have scaled." (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
    Members Reviews:
    Here's Paula!
I liked this book and am especially I got it in audio format. Paula's distinctive Southern accent is a vital part of her personality, and it just doesn't come across on the page as it does for real here.
The book flags rather badly in its last quarter, after the success of The Lady and Sons (her restaurant) and her TV shows. She just runs out of material to write/talk about. But until then the book is very entertaining--I laughed out loud many times.
You'll learn a lot about Paula Deen you didn't expect. I never thought about Paula having a sex life, for example . . . (She does!)
Anyway, I recommend it to lovers of her show.
    touching....
I think this was a touching and honest account of her life. It is very interesting to know more that just the side you see on TV. She is a funny and amazing woman. I thoroughly enjoyed listening, laughing and crying through the book with her.
    Great Sucess Story
You will laugh out loud. What a kick Paula is I really liked her. Paula showed if you want something you got to work for it. I loved it.
Paula Deen is a real person after all.
Where does Paula Deen rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I loved the open honesty she brings to her book. I also appreciate her ability to no man-bash the father of her children. So many women who later become successful do this but Paula talks about the father of her children with the best of honesty.
The book gave me appreciation to get started and take hold of your live. No matter what stage of the game you are in.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
several parts made me laugh and yes a few tears were shed.
    Any additional comments?
I liked the book. If you know southern culture or would like to learn a little about it. This is a good book.
I bought this for my mother.

    Publisher: Headline Audiobooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 19 votes

    Publisher's Summary:
Rich in hilarious anecdote, it tells the story of Niven's school and Sandhurst days, his posting to Malta with the Highland Light Infantry, and how he escaped the army for a new life in the States. There he joined New York high society, before crossing the continent, lured by Hollywood. He returned to Britain to serve during the Second World War, but then made Hollywood his home.
A self-confessed name dropper, Niven's encounters range from garden walks with Churchill to finding Greta Garbo swimming naked in his pool.

"An immensely enjoyable, witty and racy memoir." (Sunday Times)
"Forthright, bawdy, and often hilarious, zany and zestful, his anecdotes should keep you entertained for hours." (Sunday Express)

    Wonderful....but....
my only regret about this audiobook is that it is too brief, I wish it was longer.
Everything I had hoped it would be!
A fabulous book, beautifully written and skillfully delivered by this enchanting author. The book moves very quickly and packs in lots of information. I listened to it twice and the second time, I picked up a lot of the detail I lost in the first reading. David speaks beautifully and his charm exudes throughout. A book I will surely enjoy listening to again. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book!
Abridgement leaves something to be desired
Would you try another book written by David Niven or narrated by David Niven?
I adore David Niven's writing style and narration.
Would you recommend The Moon's a Balloon to your friends? Why or why not?
I cannot recommend this book because the abridgement leaves out so much of the written work.
What about David Nivens performance did you like?
David Niven's delivery of the abridged autobiography is excellent.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
The lighthearted style of the writer/narrator made this a very good listen. There were some very sad passages and the emotions were alluded to, but it never became mawkish.
    Any additional comments?
On the whole I was disappointed, probably because I had read the book when it was originally published and I am very aware of the huge gaps that the abridgement has left. It is such a shame as the book was one of the best of its type. I was going to buy and listen to the next instalment of David Niven's memoir, but I think that I will re-read the book instead - simply because I am so disappointed with this audiobook.
    Velvet Niven
I have been reading a lot of autobiographies lately but I still return to this one as the most honest and moving. Short, heartfelt and authentic read by the man himself.
    Absolute Classic
What did you like most about The Moon's a Balloon?
Hearing the narator read his own biography. I have been put off several biographys in the past where 'ghost readers' are used!!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Apart from David, there are so many other characters to choose from as he glances in and out of other peoples lives that it is impossible to pick just one.
Have you listened to any of David Nivens other performances? How does this one compare?
I am half way through 'Bring on the Empty Horses' and this is just as captivating.

Michael Palin has kept a diary since being newly married in the late 1960s, when he was beginning to make a name for himself as a TV scriptwriter (for David Frost, the Two Ronnies, etc). Monty Python was just around the corner. In this first volume of his diaries, he tells for the first time how Python emerged and triumphed. Perceptive and funny, it chronicles not only his struggle to find a niche in the world of television comedy, but also the extraordinary goings on of the many powerful personalities who coalesced to form the Monty Python team.

    Silly is the word.
Short, terse, but enjoyable odyssey through the life of Michael Palin; who just happened to be one of the core members of a silly group of brits which changed the course of comedy.
Silly is the word. Palin's the name.
    fascinating
I listened to halfway to hollywood first and immediately bought this as i wanted to know more about the early years of python. I'm old enough to have been around when Python was born although I can't recite the parrot sketch or any others. Palin is a great story telller it was fascinating to re live the 70's through his eyes knowing what we know now about his career and those of his fellow Python's
    An Interesting read.
I bought this book as Python fan and I wasn't disappointed. It gives great insights into the feelings of the group at the height of their success and all from the viewpoint of the quiet python. The fact that Michael Palin narrates himself only adds to the enjoyment.
A must read for any Python fan. Not to be missed.
    takes yer back!
I have spent several enjoyable afternoons laying on the conservatory sofa listening to Michael Pailin's selected readings from his diary. Whilst I was never a big Monty Python fan, I nonetheless very much enjoyed listening to Palin's recollections, read in his relaxed manner, recalling a very memorable era for all of us aged around 60. Have just downloaded the next installment and hope it is as good.
    This might seem ridiculous but...
An audiobook diary for me is strangely dissatisfying. Much as I love Michael Palin, this book I found rather dull. It tells the story of the rise and fall of Python - and with it the well being and mental state of the protagonists - but in diary format offers no particular insight or depth. A typical days entry is in truth fairly dull, as I suppose the life of a writer and performer must be.

    Wonderful
I found this audiobook very easy to listen to and certainly inspiring... Definitely worth the time and money.
Loved it and the fact it was read by the author.
I can thoroughly recommend it. Enjoyed it all, although very sad in some parts. But the girl came good in the end.
    brilliant read poor lady
omg what this lady went through is awful
well worth the read but have your tissues ready
    Strong lady
Would you consider the audio edition of Unbeaten to be better than the print version?
I found Kim's voice a little hard on the ears, but I'm pleased I listened to, rather than read the book.
What did you like best about this story?
How Kim was able to get back up, dust herself off and deal with everything she had thrown at her.
What about Kim Woodburns performance did you like?
A great deal of emotion was in her performance.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Having a world of love from my mum, I was heartbroken to hear how cruel and wicked her mum was. Her family was cold and chose to turn a blind eye on so many things. I was moved to tears when Kim spoke of her baby, you could hear the emotion in her voice.
    Heartbreaking
Got to say Kim does get my back up at times but know I feel I know where she is coming from and never will I thing a negative thought about her again xxxx

    Publisher's Summary:
Honus Wagner, whose career in baseball (most of it with the Pittsburgh Pirates) stretched from 1895 to 1917, was the first American sports superstar of the twentieth century. One of the first five players to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in its first year (1939), he was probably the best shortstop in baseball's history. His great career and the dawn of baseball as popular entertainment occurred simultaneously, and he has become an icon of the early game; his 1909 baseball card, one of which sold four years ago for $451,000, is a holy grail of American memorabilia. This first major biography shows why Wagner was America's favorite image of sport during baseball's transition to the modern era.

    History comes alive!
The first review I ever did here was for "Clemente" ~ which I loved. However, after listening to "Honus Wagner" I can say that I'm even more impressed! Wagner's career coincided w/ the growth of baseball from a "game" to a "sport" and he was truly its' best ambassador.
Besides the expected details of The Flying Dutchman's career w/ the Pittsburgh Pirates, we are also introduced to the dramatic changes that were happening in America at the turn of the 20th Century. Automobiles replacing carriages; athletes & actors replacing statesmen & scholars as the public's sweethearts; Coporate mergers & takeovers affecting everday life; etc.
Plus there is SOOO MUCH I learned about old time baseball that I never knew before: The DH rule nearly introduced in the 1890's; Rabid fans who roadtripped across the circuit to cheer their teams; players suspected of using "performance enhancements" and the public's outcry.
An INCREDIBLE read that literally brought a tear to my eye when completed. BRAVO HONUS!!
Bringing the great Honus Wagner back to life
When the events an author is writing about happened 100 years ago, the best compliments a reader can pay the writer is to say the material is well-researched and entertaining. That is undoubtedly the case here. While by no means is this an elite biography, Wagner himself was an elite player, truly one of the all-time greats. I wanted to learn a lot more about him and about how the game was played at the turn of the last century, and this book accomplished both. in particular, the narration was very enjoyable.
    Awesome baseball history!
Not only does it give an excellent biography of one of baseballs all time greatest players, it also gives an excellent history of the start up of the National and American leagues.
A must listen for all baseball fans.
    Very dry
This book is like someone going through the newspaper archives of each game and reading the recaps. Filled with uninteresting items like pitcher x had a sore arm, player y had two hits. The authors did not distill the information and present a compelling storyline. I wanted to be interested, to learn about Wagner and baseball at the turn of the century, but it was boring. Sure, there's some good nuggets, but you have to dig.

    Publisher's Summary:
From the moment the ship docked in Le Havre in the fall of 1948 and Julia watched the well-muscled stevedores unloading the cargo to the first perfectly soigne meal that she and her husband, Paul, savored in Rouen en route to Paris, where he was to work for the USIS, Julia had an awakening that changed her life. Soon this tall, outspoken gal from Pasadena, California, who didn't speak a word of French and knew nothing about the country, was steeped in the language, chatting with purveyors in the local markets, and enrolled in the Cordon Bleu.
After managing to get her degree despite the machinations of the disagreeable directrice of the school, Julia started teaching cooking classes herself, then teamed up with two fellow gourmettes, Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle, to help them with a book they were trying to write on French cooking for Americans. Throwing herself heart and soul into making it a unique and thorough teaching book, only to suffer several rounds of painful rejection, is part of the behind-the-scenes drama that Julia reveals with her inimitable gusto and disarming honesty.
This memoir is laced with wonderful stories about the French character, particularly in the world of food, and the way of life that Julia embraced so wholeheartedly. Above all, she reveals the kind of spirit and determination, the sheer love of cooking, and the drive to share that with her fellow Americans that made her the extraordinary success she became.
    Le voici. Et bon appetit!
    Critic Reviews:
"This is a valuable record of gorgeous meals in bygone Parisian restaurants, and the secret arts of a culinary genius." (Publishers Weekly)

    Beautiful!
The story captures the life of Julia Child extraordinary! I loved every minute and found myself upset when it all ended.
I opted for the abridged version because I felt the full version would be a little boring. If I could do it over again, I'd go for the unabridged!
    Thank you, Julia
What a wonderful gift Julia Child left us when she agreed to work with her nephew to finally put into words her life in France. I could visualize Julia speaking throughout the book and smiled.
    To be admired
I have always loved and admired Julia Child. As a child growing up I would watch her cooking shows and I really feel she is one of the major reasons I fell in love with the kitchen. It saddens me to think that I will never get a chance to meet this wonderful woman. I found it intensely heartwarming to hear her wonderful story about her life and her rise to "fame". This book is a wealth of insight into her life and the struggles that she faced and conquered. It made me want to meet her even more. If you are a fan of Julia, I advise giving this a listen and let your mind imagine being there on her journey with her. How remarkable that must have been.
    All the best...
