    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 20 mins

    Publisher's Summary:
Theirs was an extraordinary alliance that produced drama, comedy, controversy, and a mutual respect that helped shape both men's lives. Dave Kindred draws on his experiences with Ali and Cosell over nearly four decades, as well as new reporting and interviews, to break new ground in our understanding of these two giants who changed sports and television forever.
    Critic Reviews:
"[This book] shows so effectively how each man helped create the legend surrounding the other". (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
Great insight into Ali & Cosell
Among the many biographies of Ali and Cosell this is the best. Kindred does a masterful job in capturing the interplay between the two and provides superb insight into two of the 20th century's greatest men in sport.
The style of covering first one and then the other of these two men as they worked for themselves and used each other to attain and remain in the spotlight is fabulous.
A biography of Ali without Cosell or Cosell without Ali would not accurately represent the life of either man.
Even for someone who was Kindred's neighbor during his time in Atlanta, I can recommend in a most unbiased fashion this book. If you like the human aspect of sport - even if you don't like boxing you still will enjoy this book. My wife who could not care less about boxing has enjoyed the book as well.
    Thanks Dave!
    Challenging
A Wonderful dual biography! This book challenges the myths that have arisen surrounding both men.
After reading it, I had a better appreciation of both of these individuals and a better understanding of the times in which they (and I) lived. It also makes you reflect on the contibutions both real and imagined of both Howard Cosell and Muhammed Ali. It is very listenable and engaging throughout.
    Great narration, superb story.
I was 11 years old when Ali first fought Frazier. There was a huge dispute in my neighborhood about who to root for. I had no idea of the racial, political, and religious controversy regarding Muhammad Ali. This story brings it all to life in a way that honors both the broadcaster and the athlete. When the narrator dropped into his Cosell impersonation I laughed out loud several times. It amazed me that he could do Ali equally as good! Very believable and very good performance by the narrator.
    Inside info
Is there anything you would change about this book?
    No, it was well researched.
What other book might you compare Sound and Fury to and why?
    Couldn't say.
What about Dick Hills performance did you like?
    Performance was well done.
Was Sound and Fury worth the listening time?
Yes if you are interested in the history of these two people and the times in which they lived.
    Any additional comments?
I learned a few things that I was not aware of even though I lived through these times.

    Title: Wink
Subtitle: The Incredible Life and Epic Journey of Jimmy Winkfield
    Author: Ed Hotaling
    Narrator: Alan Sklar
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 2 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-06-06
    Publisher: McGraw-Hill Education
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
This vivid and compelling biography has already led to Winkfield's recent induction into the horse racing's Hall of Fame, one of only three black jockeys honored there. Wink tells the story of Jimmy's rise from humble beginnings as a shoeshine boy in Lexington, Kentucky, to the top of turn-of-the-century American racing. Bursting with talent, confidence, and charm, this brilliant horseman was poised to become the greatest athlete in what was then the world's biggest sport when he was blackballed by stable owners in 1903. Desperate to continue racing, Wink left his beloved Kentucky, bought a steamer ticket for Europe, and made the world his racetrack.
No athlete has ever had a more spectacular career or demonstrated more courageously how to ride past any hardship. Jimmy Winkfield achieved a human greatness that transcends the limits of sport. Wink tells this wonderful story, this American story, in all its rich and vibrant power.
    Critic Reviews:
"Hotaling's lovingly crafted reminiscence of a great athlete brings a vanished American subculture to light." (Publishers Weekly)

THRILLING FOR RACING, HORSE PEOPLE AND OTHERS
It is the definitive history of a black jockey before many re-appeared at Churchill Downs, again, when the spotlight was cast back on Goldencents who wasn't the best chestnut to attempt a Derby win.
This book is complex, illustrates history in America, and is well-written. If you like history, TB horses, and the prevails of a jockey who was a trend-setter despite divorces, health issues, and riding in Europe, you will enjoy this classic. The book focuses on the time frame with acccuracy, depicting why male jockeys were selected by trainers differently and why so few broadcasters knew this story until recently.
There are a lot of jokes about not the Southern culture nor the times but about Jimmy Winkfield's ability to endure almost anything. TB trainers, riders, historians, and others will be absored in this tale that depicts the possess of putting together a winning jockey and a winning horse combination. Some people who know their Churchill Downs history will love it as a gift and others who don't will learn how amazing training horses can be as a profession or how grueling.
This tale has been covered by writers depicting white athletes but jockeys around the world might enjoy this as much as reading a book about Julia Krone's ground-breaking career. You don't have to be into racing to understand the importance.
    Great Research
This book has been instrumental in my research. I have really enjoyed reading about the life of Jimmy Winkfield. Awesome!
    very good read
Wink,I have enjoyed reading this book. Lots of history, fantastic, interesting, the mans life is amazing, i wish i could meet him. it is terrible to think of him trying to get a job with a jack hammer, his hands should never be on such a tool. they were for gently guiding thoroughbreds. Ed Hotaling is a wonderful author to read turning each page is like opening up a new surprise.
    LOVED THE BOOK
I lived 15 years in Louisville, Ky and never heard this story
Great story! Actually, an awesome story. Not so thrilled with the writing style. Still a good read.
    Great story
Wink is a true story about what the infuental people in our country have done to other people. and are still ding today.

    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
The ultimate bully-magnet, Finkel grew up heckled and hazed until destiny came in the form of a trading-card game called Magic: The Gathering. Magic exploded from nerdy obsession to mainstream mania and made the teenage Finkel an ultra-cool world champion.
Once transformed, this young shark stormed poker rooms from the underground clubs of New York City to the high-stakes tables online, until he landed on the largest card-counting blackjack team in the country. Taking Vegas for millions, Finkel's squad of brainy gamers became the biggest players in town. Then they took on the town's biggest game, the World Series of Poker, and walked away with more than $3.5 million!
Thrilling, edgy, and ferociously feel-good, the odyssey of these underdogs-turned-overlords is the stuff of pop-culture legend. Acclaimed author David Kushner masterfully deals out the outrageous details while bringing to life a cast of characters rife with aces, kings, knaves¿and more than a few jokers. If you secretly believe every player has his day, you're right. Here's the proof.
This audio also includes an interview with Jon Finkel, a.k.a. Jonny Magic.
    Critic Reviews:
    "A lively...picaresque." (Publishers Weekly)

    A nut flush
David Kushner evenly writes a short history of a group of guys who turn passion for gaming into a serious vocation. Even if you don't know a thing about poker, you'll enjoy the journey, the disappointments and the wins of this rag-tag gang of gamblers.
    Loved it!
Very absorbing tale of a unique character. Jonny is very engaging and many will find something of themselves in him and relate to his story. It gave me some insights into the mind of my own game loving teenage son.
Whether you know anything about the games or not this true story will keep you listening right through to the end nonstop.
    Liberal storytelling at it's worst
The book is okay as far as stories like this go. Some of the transitions and resolutions of events could have been better told, but if that is how it happened, then that history is probably the truth. What REALLY ANNOYED me about this book (and why it gets it's 1 star rating) is that Dave Williams was the winner of the $3.5 Million at the WSOP, and John Finkel had NOTHING to do with it.
John and Dave are both Magic: The Gathering players in 2000. That's the similarity and the connection, they didn't play together "for years" and Finkel didn't teach Williams to play Magic. It's like giving Jason Schmidt credit for Barry Bonds hitting 73 Home Runs in 2001, (both players were in the same sport "baseball" and on the same team that year)
I guess I just find it disappointing that this book was so misleading from the outset. I do not recommend it for the same reason I would not recommend only reading 1 side of any history....it's (at best) biased, and at worst, lying.
    Extremely interesting
    One of my favorites.

    Title: Wilt, 1962
Subtitle: The Night of 100 Points and the Dawn of a New Era
    Author: Gary M. Pomerantz
    Narrator: Stephen Hoye
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-27-05
    Publisher: Books on Tape
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 22 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
In 1962, the National Basketball Association, stepchild to the college game, was searching for its identity. Its teams were mostly white, the number of black players limited by an unspoken quota. Games were played in drafty, half-filled arenas, and the players traveled on buses and trains, telling tall tales, playing cards, and sometimes reading Joyce. Into this scene stepped the unprecedented Wilt Chamberlain: strong and quick-witted, voluble and enigmatic, a seven-footer who played with a colossal will and a dancer's grace.
Pomerantz tracked down Knicks and Philadelphia Warriors, fans, journalists, team officials, other NBA stars of the era, and basketball historians, conducting more than 250 interviews in all, to recreate in painstaking detail the game that announced the Dipper's greatness.
At the heart of the book is the self-made Chamberlain, a romantic cosmopolitan who owned a nightclub in Harlem and shrugged off segregation with a bebop cool but harbored every slight deep in his psyche. March 2, 1962, presented the awesome sight of Wilt Chamberlain imposing himself on a world that would diminish him.
Wilt, 1962 is not only the dramatic story of a singular basketball game but a meditation on small towns, mid-century America, and one of the most intriguing figures in the pantheon of sports heroes.
BONUS: This audio contains the original fourth-quarter radio broadcast of Wilt's record-shattering 100-point game.
    Critic Reviews:
"In his undeniable excellence and egotism, Wilt Chamberlain was America itself, inspiring worship, ambivalence, and downright awe." (Philadelphia Inquirer)

    Wilt, 1962
I loved this book. It was much better than I had expected and was very well written and spoken. The author's genius lay in his ability to write about a two hour time period in a way that not only kept my interest but had me on the edge of my ears even though I knew the outcome. I left this book having a new appreciation for Wilt Chamberlain. I never realized was a great man he was. Unfortunately our culture has relegated him to the status of an icon that slept with 20,000 women. He was not only a great basketball player but a man of great depth, kindness and strength. I was sad when this book ended. Anyone that enjoys biography and sports will love this book.

    Critic Reviews:

    Members Reviews:
    A Wonderful Life it is
This is a short book that fans of the movie will enjoy. There are some tidbits I had not read elsewhere. Most of the books written about this movie suffer from the fact that 40 or 50 years had elapsed by the time anyone thought to write a book. Thus the eroding of people's memories, and the passing of many of the actors.
Still the inconsistencies are charming. It was Jimmie Stewart's favorite "picture" and he shot a lot of pictures. His statements, again 40 years later, that the the film was shot in sequence over 7 weeks don't match statements made by Capra that the film was shot over a period of 3 and a half months, and out of sequence, like most films.
But who cares? The movie was not a big hit when it first came out. It was billed as a romance, not as a Christmas movie. Critics thought it was sappy.
Through clerical error, the film went out of copyright in the 70's and was free to air. Television stations eventually started airing it several times a week during the holiday season. As a result, it gradually became a holiday classic. Enough time had passed that the film was seen by modern day viewers as a mostly accurate depiction of small town life in the 1940's.
Why is this film so moving?
As we go about our daily routines, we often find them burdensome. There is a lack of meaning or purpose. We are just going through the motions. The little things we do don't matter, no one notices. This movie makes you rethink all that.
The book details a scene, cut by Capra, where Clarence the angel confronts Potter about his theft, confronting him as well about his life of selfish penury. In this scene, Potter got what was coming to him.
Yet it wasn't included in the movie. Food for thought.
    Five Stars

Huge fan of the movie and this book creates great insight into how the movie was made and all the little extras that make the movie even more special. The photographs are great as well. Highly recommend this book for any lover of the movie. It's a keepsake.

Blood and Guts of Pro Football
Excellent descriptions of Joe Namath's key football games. One gets a good feel of the personality that changed the marketing of the game. However, I feel there's another aspect of Joe that wasn't expanded upon - his spirituality. He meditated and had a keen interest in the science of astrology.
The author gives detailed bio sketches of some key people in Joe's life but I found them far too long. Shorter versions would have been better.
A disagreeable aspect was the author's objectifying of women tone in describing Joe's womanizing dalliances.
Throughout the bio you keeping hoping for Joe to overcome his obstacles but it's not fully to be. In this way it's not a feel good football story. Years ago I read George Plimpton's Paper Lion. That was a feel good football story which had humour and good insight into the lockeroom bantering. This is missing in this book and I'm sure tomfoolery was present in the Jets' lockroom. It would have made it better.
All in all, recommended for the football fan. Much work went into the researching and interviewing for the book. Probably nothing else comparable out there on Joe Namath.
    Joe Namath #1
Nothing more be said. It's Joe Namath bare bones as Joe Namath was always "bare bones" in his life, how he played the game and how he played the night. The last of the great QB Passers and QBs who called the game their selves! A surprising insight into the real violence that, occasionally, is planned and plotted into the game plan and an incredible insight into Mr Joe Namath's "origins". No silver spoon kid here. I Listened from beginning to end. Another way of "I couldn't put it down". Great book! Well written! Well Read, as per usual, by Mr Scott Brick!
    Namath (Unabridged)
If you love football you will love this book. The man that changed the history of football.

    Publisher's Summary:
In a career that spans over seven decades, Roger Moore has been at the very heart of Hollywood. Of course, he's an actor who has starred in films that have made him famous the world over; but he is also a tremendous prankster, joker, and raconteur. Despite the fact that he is widely known as one of the nicest guys in the business, on and off the screen he has always been up for some fun. In this fabulous collection of true stories from his stellar career, Moore lifts the lid on the movie business, from Hollywood to Pinewood. One Lucky Bastard features outrageous tales from his own life and career, as well as those told to him by a host of stars and filmmakers, including Tony Curtis, Sean Connery, Frank Sinatra, Gregory Peck, Peter Sellers, and many more.
    Members Reviews:
Roger Moore lovers enjoyed Moore's first memoir
Roger Moore lovers enjoyed Moore's first memoir, "My Word Is My Bond," and clearly the publishers attempt to cash in on that love with "One Lucky Bastard." Moore is a delightful bon vivant, but this book contains a few too many funny stories about virtually unknown British actors to work well. When Moore recounts funny moments with major stars, such as Lana Turner and Frank Sinatra, the stories work well. Moore copies David Niven here, the raconteur actor who wrote an excellent memoir entitled "The Moon's A Balloon," and then followed it with a lesser tome, "Bring On The Empty Horses." History repeats itself. That said, the book is a pleasant diversion and Moore is very funny when he's ratting himself out with self-deprecating wit.
    Interesting insight from ex 007
Roger Moore is almost too much of a gentlemen to be sharing stories about other Hollywood types, but what's there is definitely interesting and funny.
    Another Bond, James Bond
Gives a different outlook on Hollywood stars of a different time. Always enjoyed Roger Moore.
    Five Stars
    fun to read.
    Terribly disappointed.
We expect more of the actor's tales regarding his career. Instead, we get anecdotes regarding performers he's known, and most of them are ones that have been published many times over. Naturally, he is not involved with 96% of these. So if you're wanting a book about Moore, this isn't one to purchase.

The book will chronicle Lin's high school, college and early career in the NBA with particular emphasis on the media explosion surrounding his success as starting point guard with the Knicks. It will explore how Jeremy's Christian faith, family, education and cultural inheritance have contributed to his success. The book will also include interviews with basketball experts on Jeremy's future in the NBA, Asian-American thought leaders on the role of race in Jeremy's rise to stardom, and renowned Christian athletes and pastors on the potent combination of faith and sports.
    Members Reviews:
A Thoughtful Look at Jeremy Lin's Life
I enjoyed reading this book. In it, Dalrymple does an admirable job not only of chronicling Jeremy Lin's basketball career, from his school days to his days in the NBA, but also of delving into the values and influences that have shaped Jeremy Lin and made him the person he is today. Dalrymple accomplishes this by alternating between an ongoing account of the seven-game winning streak in early 2012 that inspired the "Linsanity" phenomenon around the world and an exploration of Jeremy Lin's life story, beginning with his ancestors and going up to the present.
In this book, Dalrymple makes several good points. First, Dalrymple argues that Jeremy Lin succeeded on the basketball court precisely because of his Chinese heritage, rather than despite his Chinese background, for his family instilled Jeremy with the values of hard work and working for the good of the group. Likewise, Dalrymple argues that Jeremy Lin's Christian faith made him a better player because it gave him a greater purpose in his career, and because it taught Jeremy the crucial lesson of humility, which makes him a far more compelling player than other athletes who live only to promote their own glory.
I and my Singaporean wife have adopted a Chinese boy, and I would be glad to hold up Jeremy Lin as a model for him to admire and emulate as he grows up. I would likewise recommend this book to those who wish to read about a player whose character makes him eminently admirable.
Can't believe I didn't read this book sooner
I've been so busy watching all of Jeremy's games, videos, tweeters, FBs, magazines and on and on, so finally now there is a break of season and he's finished his annual Asia tours and I finally have time to read the books. This is the second book I read and I truly love it. Although I thought that I knew everything about JLin but the author yet can bring tears in my eyes with every chapters. A must read for all sports fans or not.
    excellent book
Before I read this book, I read another book which also documented JLIN's story. However, I love this book much better. The author put the information in a way that's very easy to follow and his writing style is colorful and imaginative. I especially appreciate the author's insight into the success of Linsanity which are so true in my observation.
    OK book
I bought this as a gift for my athletic grandson. However I read it before giving it to him. The story is quite engaging and gives the background of J. Lin's rise to fame and his Christian beliefs.

    Publisher's Summary:
But it wasn't Walter Johnson's blazing fastball alone that placed him on a pedestal as high as any in American sports. It was Johnson, above all others, who came to personify "gentlemanly conduct in the heat of battle", as Shirley Povich put it. One of a small number of like-minded stars tempering the game's roughneck reputation in the century's early years, he was still around to help shepherd it through its darkest hour of the "Black Sox" scandal. For several generations, Johnson's presence in the big-league consoled parents all over the country. If the game was good enough for the modest, decent, and honest Kansas farm boy, they figured, it was okay for their sons, too.
Throughout a life as full as it gets, and a career as dazzling as any in the history of sports, Walter Johnson remained an unspoiled individual, his name unmarred by any hint of wrongdoing on or off the field. This is the grand story of one of the good guys.

    Greatest Pitcher of All Time?
All baseball fans owe it to themselves to read about one of the truly great pitchers. The book also gives an appreciation for the man and the times he pitched during.
I found the book entertaining and loved gaining a better understanding of baseball during the teens through thirties... they were very different times. It was also interesting to read about baseball in the nation's capital at the time.
In the end, this was a well done, well read book about one of the greatest baseball players in history... to appreciate baseball one needs to understand it history and this books ensures that and more.
The answer to the question in the title is... yes!
    VERY INTERESTING
I found this book VERY interesting. Not your typical bio of a person who had a rough life and fought his way through trouble, etc... But a story about a regular guy, with irregular talent who found motivation in his pride. How hard this man worked his entire life, is more than inspiring.
But, this book is for REAL baseball fans. If not, you may get bored at times. If you love the game, and its players, its worth reading about, maybe the best pitcher to throw a ball.
    Amazing story.
Great story but the narration suffered a bit. Any time he read a quotation it was one of two voices and intonations.

This is a good book for those who like hearing about living in a different country, travel also about a new love coming together. Written and narrated by the actress who was the wife in All Creatures Great and Small. Wanted the second book but it is not on audible so I will have to read it!
    Delightful!
I read this book many years ago and Carol Drinkwater's warmth came shining through. So too her audible reading. As a lover and former owner in the South of France, all the places, things and people were deliciously familiar to me. I could smell the smells, taste the tastes. It made me long to return. Thank you
