    Title: The Prophet Muhammad
    Subtitle: A Biography
    Author: Barnaby Rogerson
    Narrator: Kelly Hunter
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 58 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-06-12
    Publisher: Hachette Audio UK
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Religious Figures
    Publisher's Summary:
The Prophet Muhammad is a hero for all mankind. In his lifetime he established a new religion, Islam; a new state, the first united Arabia; and a new literary language, the classical Arabic of the Qur'an, for the Qur'an is believed to be the word of God revealed to Muhammad by the angel Gabriel. A generation after his death he would be acknowledged as the founder of a world empire and a new civilisation. Any one of these achievements would have been more than enough to permanently establish his genius. To our early twenty-first century minds, what is all the more astonishing is that he also managed to stay true to himself and retained to his last days the humility, courtesy and humanity that he had learned as an orphan shepherd boy in central Arabia. If one looks for a parallel example from Christendom, you would have to combine the Emperor Constantine with St Francis and St Paul, an awesome prospect. Barnaby Rogerson's elegant biography not only looks directly at the life of the Prophet Muhammad, but beautifully evokes for western readers the Arabian world into which he was born in 570 AD.

    Nice Listen.
Barnaby seems, a times, to contradict himself. He moves between one who is, using the Muslim term, Unbeliever, to one who is a Believer. In all, considering the belief of the Author, it is a fairly good account of the Greatest Man to walk the face of the Earth - Peace be upon him.
Kelly please narrate more Books. You were great. :-)
The life of the greatest person in history..
A sublime human being and the greatest prophet. Conquered Mecca through humility, kindness and reconciliation.
    Poison within the honey
The author appears to be admiring the prophet, but portrays him as a person who would support his followers even if they are wrong. A man who chases after his love for women, to the point of a controversial revelation to get him to marry a woman already married to his previously adopted son.
The author describes prophet Mohamed peace be upon him as picking a fight with the jews in Madina, because he didn't like their presence. And skips the betrayal of the jews to the muslims in war and their attempts to assassinate the prophet to show the brutality of an undeserved punishment.
The description of how the Quran was revealed to the prophet is made to convey doubt within the wording of the Quran.

    Title: The Rebbe
Subtitle: The Life and Afterlife of Menachem Mendel Schneerson
    Author: Samuel Heilman, Menachem Friedman
    Narrator: David Cohen
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 59 mins

    Release date: 09-19-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 9 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Religious Figures
    Publisher's Summary:
From the 1950s until his death in 1994, Menachem Mendel Schneerson - revered by his followers worldwide simply as the Rebbe - built the Lubavitcher movement from a relatively small sect within Hasidic Judaism into the powerful force in Jewish life that it is today. Swept away by his expectation that the Messiah was coming, he came to believe that he could deny death and change history.
Samuel Heilman and Menachem Friedman paint an unforgettable portrait of Schneerson, showing how he reinvented himself from an aspiring French-trained electrical engineer into a charismatic leader who believed that he and his Lubavitcher Hasidic emissaries could transform the world. They reveal how his messianic convictions ripened and how he attempted to bring the ancient idea of a day of redemption onto the modern world's agenda. Heilman and Friedman also trace what happened after the Rebbe's death, by which time many of his followers had come to think of him as the Messiah himself.
The Rebbe tracks Schneerson's remarkable life from his birth in Russia, to his student days in Berlin and Paris, to his rise to global renown in New York, where he developed and preached his powerful spiritual message from the group's gothic mansion in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. This compelling book demonstrates how Schneerson's embrace of traditionalism and American-style modernity made him uniquely suited to his messianic mission.

A moderately entertaining, though not even closely biographical, account a Great Spritual leader
ALERT: This book is not a biography by any academic standard. Is closer in fact to a tabloid.
You know, there are academic works that support theories with evidence and then there are educated tabloids that are well written but make supposition's based on loose evidence and hypotheses. This is the latter. The author's of this largely fictional novel have an agenda that is suspect.
Full Disclosure - I am not Lubavitch.
Make no mistake, this is an entertaining read but it's by no means an apparantly well research tome. IF it was by chance researched at all, the authors took so many literary liberties that it can't be considered as credible source for understanding the mindset of Chabad or nor it's Rebbe.
When I read "he MUST have been..." or variations on that theme, it tells me the author doesn't really know, nor have evidence to support the supposition's they are making. No, rather, they are make assertion's based on THEIR perspective, THEIR experiences, THEIR coloring of the evidence. How does one, or can one, stand in the shoes of a great spiritual leader and assume to understand what motivates them or inspires them? One can't. How can one stand in the shoes of a world-wide leader and assume to understand or know what they are thinking? One can't. Yet this book, unfortunately, presses theories, speculation and 'maybe's" as fact.
Like I said, it was entertaining to read...but it gave me very little insight into the thinking of spirit of the great Rebbe.
    Four Stars
    Very good
    Great research and presentation
Seemed to cover many untouched aspects of Lubavitch, and posted a different, "outside", perspective to the Rebbe z"l.

Original and thought-provoking, this concise study is essential for all who seek to learn more about the most controversial figure in Christianity.
    Editorial Reviews:
This introduction to Paul and his gospel is clear, nuanced, and authoritative. Mora Hooker unravels the controversies surrounding Paul and his ethics, by placing the apostle's thoughts in the appropriate historical context. Hooker's analysis is illuminating and well researched; this results in an engaging recording that goes beyond the average summary-based introduction.

Length: 4 hrs and 41 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-24-12

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Religious Figures
    Publisher's Summary:
For centuries, Augustine's writings have moved and fascinated readers. With the keen eye of a writer whose own intellectual analysis won him a Pulitzer Prize, Gary Wills examines this famed fourth-century bishop and seminal thinker whose grounding in classical philosophy informed his interpretation of Christian doctrine.
Saint Augustine explores Augustine's thought as well as the everyday man who set pen to parchment. It challenges many misconceptions, including those regarding his early sexual excesses. It portrays Augustine as being "peripheral in his day, a provincial on the margins of classical culture" who didn't even know Greek. Here is a lively and incisive portrait of one who helped shape Western thinking.
    Critic Reviews:
"Wills's agile mind matches the agility of Saint Augustine. He presents his subject with candor and with empathy." (New York Times Book Review)

    Great Life of Augustine
    Great Life -
Excellent, well written, enjoyable. Brings History to life without being over pious. Like me , he said he didn't 'know' Greek. Im sure he had as much Greek as I have.
I liked the picture on the first edition showing Augustine in his 'street' clothes. The new picture of a mitered bishop is a bit too much. Miters came in much later and maybe they should be dumped now. This is even mentioned in the text. EvXaristou!

    Good primer in St. Augustine.
This relatively short book does and excellent job of explaining St. Augustine, for those of us who have always wanted to know a little bit more about him.
    Good Book
Interesting look at Augustine's thoughts by a prolific writer who usually has a different take than usual. A well educated author who writes well.
    Five Stars
The shipment was quick and the book is excellent reading.
    Thanks,

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Religious Figures
    Publisher's Summary:
Winner of the PEN/Ackerley Prize 2013
At 14, Richard Holloway left his home in the Vale of Leven, north of Glasgow, and travelled hundreds of miles to be educated and trained for the priesthood by a religious order in an English monastery. By 25, he had been ordained and was working in the slums of Glasgow. Throughout the following 40 years, Richard touched the lives of many people in the Church and in the wider community. But behind his confident public face lay a restless, unquiet heart and a constantly searching mind.
    Critic Reviews:
A wonderfully honest and deeply moving reflection on the nature of doubt, saintly almost in its modesty - though Holloway might not like my saying so. A breath of fresh doubt that so many of us need, whether believer or nonbeliever, and I'm both. (MICHAEL MORPURGO)
    Members Reviews:
    An honest and moving memoir
An exceptional book. If you are interested in Anglo Catholicism and the dreadful knots and schisms it has experienced over the last thirty or forty years, Richard Holloway's account of his life within the church and the politics of religion is fascinating.
The tragedy of the 1998 Lambeth Conference, the decisions and divisions which resulted from that date, are laid bare and the church is seen in all its arrogance.
Richard Holloway reads his own book bravely, sings and recites poetry - lays himself bare to the reader/listener.
For anyone who has questioned his/her own faith, admired religious men and women for their dedication but worried about whether they also have crises of faith along the way, for believers and sceptics alike, this book illustrates and discusses the decisions we make in life and the trials and consequences we inevitably face.

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Religious Figures
    Publisher's Summary:
This book follows the amazing life of John Corbly, circa 1733 to 1803, from the time he was shanghaied in Ireland as a young teenager to the troublesome times of the Whisky Rebellion in frontier Pennsylvania.
Once in America, he experiences some good luck. Indentured to a good Christian family, he learns farming, believing it to be his destiny. But those were not God's plans for him, and this unassuming young man eventually becomes a lay preacher and evangelist.
Persecuted for his beliefs, he moves his family to the wild frontier of Pennsylvania. Once he reaches this untamed area, like the other frontiersmen, Corbly finds only pain and suffering as crops fail, there is no money, and Indian raids wipe out whole communities in a matter of minutes.
The Fledgling government has little respect for these rugged frontiersmen. The bureaucrats think this remote province across the mountains is good for only one thing - collecting taxes - that these poor, unfortunate frontier families are not able to pay. More fear and anguish results from the brutal actions of the Federal government who send troops and drag the suspected "insurrectionists" out of their beds in the dead of winter.
Yet, through it all, the indefatigable Rev. John Corbly never loses faith, establishes many churches throughout Pennsylvania, and continues to evangelize until his dying breath.

A very good book and quite humours. A little to much history and it made the preacher sound like he was for making moon shine. I would recommend the book to anyone black or white alike for its fun reading alone.
    i love it
was a well written book i like books of long ago.we could use more books of this kind love it
Great book about a great man - but the Kindle version may not work
Purchased the kindle version. Unfortunately it's completely broken and borderline unreadable - it must have been processed automatically from a scan. Characters like apostrophes and quotation marks are missing in every location, and several places (in the first two chapters - so far) sentences are strangely jumbled - for example: "They weren t the high spirited pair he had learned on during the carriage ride, but a splendid pair of draft responded to his every animals that command." and another: "It was late afternoon when Applegate called John over and handed him a five pound her attendance and Mister the bride away" umm, what?
    Needs work.
Update: The author contacted us and took care of our problem. =)
    my review
interesting and kept my interest all they way through... a nice read! I enjoyed this book a lot! I am going to read all the books by this author.
Remove this book from this web page.
This book is pure fiction and does not portray Pastor John Corbly. It should not be listed in this selection of historian Don Corbly's books which are historically correct, fully documented and sourced, indexed, and authentic.
Amazon says it is shown here only because the words John Corbly appear in the title and is merged with other books which bear the name Corbly, even the name of the author, Don Corbly.
