    Good message/ questionable narration
I struggled to take the narrator seriously as his delivery is airy, but the subject is weighty. It needed a stronger voice to be consistent with the message.

    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 4 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Religious Figures
    Publisher's Summary:
On March 13, the cardinals of the Catholic Church, gathered to elect a successor to a living Pope for the first time in 600 years, announced a dramatic shift. By elevating Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina to become Pope Francis the 266th Pontiff, the cardinals were naming the first-ever Pope from the growing New World to take the helm of the church at a crucial moment.
It was a stunning move by a 2,000-year-old institution that has immense influence - with 1.2 billion adherents worldwide - and huge problems, including a decade-old sex-abuse scandal that has shattered faith in the institution, a shortage of priests, and secular trends that have drained the church of members and challenged its relevancy in a changing world.
From the shocking decision by Pope Benedict XVI to retire, to the introduction of Pope Francis, from the back streets of Buenos Aires to the front row at St. Peter's Square, reporters from The Wall Street Journal have chronicled these dramatic weeks in the life of the oldest institution in the world. Now, in a new audiobook, Journal reporters present a detailed, timely, and original biography of the new Pope Francis, as well as new insight on the bargaining and drama that surrounded his rise. Pope Francis presents the full, in-depth story of the church's change in direction and the man charged with leading it, and consider how Pope Francis might address the years of scandal and shortcomings while leading Catholics worldwide toward a deeper faith.

Five Stars but a few flaws with presentation and spelling
I just started reading it yesterday after it arrived on my Kindle Paper White. I first read the excerpts in the Weekend Wall Street Journal and thus decided to go shopping for it. It is immensely readable. You get pulled into the narrative right away , As a non-catholic but christian I am impressed by this man and what he can do for the whole world as a spokesman for chrisitianity as a whole. However, I have noticed a few a flaws. Apparently the editiors have not done their proof reading as I have come across several spelling errors in the book. They may have rushed this out..not sure how producing e-books is different than print publishing. Also the formatting on some pages or paragraphs do not ident well on the Kindle page as I would have expected to see on the paper version of the book when reading it. But still an excellent read so far.
FRANCIS: An Enigma of Hope for The Church
This is a very insightful and provocative book in its attempt to define who and how the new Pope Francis will impact the papacy. Tracing a person's roots, family, education, training, experience, accomplishments and struggles provides the keys to predict how he may act in the future. The story of Bergoglio's journey from Argentina to Rome is fascinating, provocative and enticing in its quest to give insights into this complex Jesuit who did not seek the papacy. And that is the enigma for the Church as he tackles the Vatican beauracracy.
    Pleased!
I liked this book as it provides an easy to read bio of our Holy Father. It gave me a good foundational understanding of this pope for whom my initial joy over his humility became a an unsettled concern that the world has given itself yet another proponent of 'Rob from the rich and give to the poor'.

    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 17 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Religious Figures
    Publisher's Summary:
A conspiracy within the Vatican - to stop an outspoken Pope
In 1938, Pope Pius XI was the world's most prominent critic of Hitler and his rhetoric of ethnic "purity." To make his voice heard, Pius called upon a relatively unknown American Jesuit whose writing about racism in America had caught the Pope's attention. Pius enlisted John LaFarge to write a papal encyclical - the Vatican's strongest decree - publicly condemning Hitler, Mussolini, and their murderous Nazi campaign against the Jews.
At the same time conservative members of the Vatican's innermost circle were working in secret to suppress the document. Chief among them was Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, whose appeasement of the Germans underlay a deep-running web of conspiracy. Pacelli, who would become Pope Pius XII, was joined by Wlodimir Ledóchowski, leader of the Jesuit order, to keep the finished encyclical from reaching the increasingly ill Pope.
Peter Eisner, award-winning reporter and author of the critically acclaimed The Freedom Line, combines shocking new evidence (released only recently from Vatican archives) and eyewitness testimony to create a compelling journey into the heart of the Vatican and a little-known story of an American's partnership with the head of the Catholic Church. A truly essential work, it brings staggering new light to one of the most critical junctures in modern history.

    Sporadic and a Let Down
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Probably not. I'm a Catholic and a huge WW2 history buff, and after listening to this, I came away feeling let down and unsatisfied. The history is nothing new. The story inside the Vatican is interesting, however. The story bounces around. The theme is very unclear until the very end. I came into this book thinking it'd be about a priest actively working with the pope against Hitler. Instead, it's a priest personally summoned by the pope to perform a task. This priest performs the task with zero enthusiasm and without any heart...that's kind of the same way I felt listening to this book.
Would you ever listen to anything by Peter Eisner again?
Probably not. The story telling was sporadic and random. At first, I thought that this would be about John LaFarge, and for the first third of the book, it was. Then, the story starts jumping around following different people and telling seemingly meaningless stories of their lives while somewhat following a story line and some sort of plot.. The story begins in semi-first person then goes to third person, then back to first person, then is told in the form of a history lesson.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narration, or the voice of the story was somewhat disappointing. I felt like I was a sixth grader being read to by a teacher - too simplistic and not a lot of emotion or variation in the voice. The pace of the story was slow.
    Any additional comments?
This is a story of a simple, naive, uncourageous priest and treachery in the Vatican under Pope Pius XI. The WW2 history is uninteresting and abbreviated. LaFarge's actions are a disappointment. The outcome of this story is a huge disappointment.

    Title: Rogue Rabbi
Subtitle: A Spiritual Quest - From Seminary to Ashram and Beyond
    Author: Jerry Steinberg
    Narrator: John H. Mayer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 21 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-25-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Religious Figures
    Publisher's Summary:
The fascinating story of a man whose exploration in spiritual existence has not been limited to his life as a rabbi, this autobiography shares Jerry Steinbergs experience down a path less traveled. Revealing an understanding of God that goes beyond the conventional, the memoir contributes to a different perception of the world today - an open-eyed and open-minded view that will resonate with readers of any religious or spiritual background.
After traveling to India and investigating the Christian faith, Jerry went into medical school and narrowed his focus to psychotherapy - working with past-life regression, dreams, and psychogenic illness. He also became a rabbi; but Jerry never ceased to explore all aspects of faith, and he took up a specialization in Kabbalah, a discipline of Jewish mysticism. Jerrys self-proclaimed focus has been to seek the essence of spirituality through the interface between rationalism and mysticism, and between religion and sexuality. The story of this real-life spiritual explorer will both inspire and instruct through his universally peaceful and accepting example.

    Unique Story and Perspective
Would you consider the audio edition of Rogue Rabbi to be better than the print version?
I wouldn't say this. I'm sure the print version is great too. I listen to books because I do a lot of driving.
What other book might you compare Rogue Rabbi to and why?
I've been mostly reading books with a Jewish perspective. This one is particularly interesting and an absolutely great story of the ups, downs, miracles and let downs of Jerry Steinberg's life.
What about John H. Mayers performance did you like?
He is a good reader, easy to follow. I did however just the speed up to 1.5x.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Jerry's experience with dreams and past life regression really stood out to me.
    Any additional comments?
I wish I could buy the game he created! His congregation is also very lucky to have someone lead them with such an open, warm and unique perspective.
