A TALE OF A CITY ON THE EDGE IN THE 1960s

"MOTOWN" is one of those gritty & spicy crime novels that engages the reader's interest once he/she takes it up. Once again, Detroit is center stage, a prosperous city on the cusp of a change of cataclysmic proportions. The time is 1966. Rick Amstey, a former police officer in his late 30s dismissed for misconduct, goes out for a ride in his landlady's candy-apple red GTO sports car. He eats, drinks, and lives cars. He is a rather carefree soul whenever he puts the pedal to the metal. Speed is his drug and in that era with the auto industry as king, Rick is an unabashed worshipper of heavy metal on wheels. But with the return of his landlady's son from Army service, Rick has to relinquish use of the GTO (which the landlady had reserved for her son).

At that point, Rick opts to move out and moves into an apartment in Highland Park, an autonomous city set in the midst of the City of Detroit. A good historical twist, a bit disburbing on the slavery issue if you want your lincoln unflawed, but a good listen. 'Nuff said

"National Treasure" without a secret map.

History, mystery, good writing, all things needed to keep me captivated. Excellent author who gives enough details of life in the past to give the reader empathy to the characters and the lives they lead.

William Martin never disappoints. The author weaves historical fact into a very believable storyline in this current tale and flashback story. I like how the characters set in the modern timeline found historical evidence of the past timelines characters - no treasure map but National Treasure enjoyment.

Priscilla Royal focuses as much on the everyday life of the inhabitants of the priory as the story she carefully unfolds. The characters stay true to their values although I wish their relationships were a little less stagnant. Worth reading

Not that intriguing. Pretty slow. Seems to be trying to copy World Without End. Needs more sex or something.

Bizarre at times

In the young New Netherlands colony, orphans are disappearing. The evidence recovered suggests some may have even been partially eaten. The leading theory is a Native American beast who consumes children. Terrifying an entire community, but irrevocably changing the towns Orphanmaster, a she-merchant and an English spy hunting fugitives.

For such a dark story, I was surprised at how well it was researched. In fact some of the chapters open with headlines. You get a good sense of the politics, social protocol and economic feel of the time period. You cant help but come away with a better understanding of the origins of Manhattan.

Some warnings:

-The story is gruesome throughout

-The storys romance is contrived. It feels sort of forced amongst the rest of the subject matter.

- There are also many narrators telling the story. They are all pretty roughly sketched (but eerily memorable). The collective tells the story of the colony and its time more than any one character. The timeline isnt fluid either. At times this ensures the reader is lost, and that the author may even be employing the confusion.

So its not for everyone. But if you keep to it, the novel really picks up momentum towards the end of the story and even becomes focused.

The novels narrator George Guidall was perfect. He reads the entire novel as if hes voicing over a movie trailer. I will definitely be on the lookout for more performances from him.

Fascinating Story

Based on the other reviews of this novel, this audio book may or may not be for you. I enjoyed it. George Guidall is an excellent actor (I believe the term "narrator" is too limiting for a person who acts the many characters of a given book. Try Charles Dickens for example).

Angel in Black Noir Mystery

I have to confess I love All the Nathan Heller series by Max Allen Collins . Like all the great gritty detective heroes in the 49s and 50s he is a hard drinking . Love em and leave em type of guy. All the books revolve around some famous crime back then , or an event.

The the thing about Nat is he's very likable even as he's insulting you. These guys are gangsters and the women are dames . I believe anyone who enjoys these. Stereotyped books will love this book. It' occurs around the Black Dahlia murder. Don John Miller narrates this one and is perfect ,

yes, as a big fan of Dan John Miller, reader brings this series to life. If read, it would have been way too long. Dan gets you into this version of the crime. If you are new to this author, pick the story with characters you like and Dan will really get you into the story.

What did you like best about this story?

With the new 1.25x speed, the action and pace made a great match and moved the story along.

This is a gruesome murder, and author has a way with words that can take some of the creepiness out, but not all, so beware if you have a weak stomach.

Which scene was your favorite?

lots of clues if you can catch them. This is my first of 3 books I own in this series. #1 and Bye Bye story of Marylyn Monroe. I started with this story as it peaked my curiosity. I don't know much about this author as I purchased books due to Dan John Miller reading them.

This is great entertainment if you like noir type films/stories. Author weaves the 1920's and forward so well into a mystery. I can't wait to listen to the other stories I own.

What did you like best about Enemies at Every Turn? What did you like least?

Best: Finally! Finally, there was some sort of a continuation of the story! I thought Mr Donachie had fallen asleep.Least: It felt as if the story was written because it had to be. It seemed shallow, dragging and it could have starred as well or better as just a chapter in a book. The whole book sort of slogged along, and as far as a conclusion... It just seemed to die in mid-plot.

I did get the next book just to see where it was leading and it was pretty much the same. I've gone back to re-reading O'Brian & Lambdin; I get more pleasure out of those old stories. It may be time to wrap it up and move on to something else. Or rest on one's laurels.

A rebellion inside a rebellion

This is book eight of the John Pearce series. In the last book Pearce was caught up in smugglers ring and smugglers are after him in this book. In this book Pearce is given a command by Pitt and sets off on a mission to contact the leaders of the rebellion in the Vendee. The situation is complicated by the discovery of his ex-mistress among the rebels. The rebellion is a disaster and Pierce must retreat, ex-mistress in tow and the smugglers still chasing him. The ending leaves the reader hanging until the next book comes out.

I do not like it when they change the narrator in the middle of a series. Peter Wickham was doing a great job narrating the series. Then they substituted Michael Tabor Barnes as the narrator. It is unfair to the new narrated as no matter how great they maybe they are not the original voice that the reader is use to.

You go a long way before a story

What disappointed you about The Inquisitor's Key?

I love Jefferson Bass and always anticipate his new books. But-this is just too long, drawn out, and frankly you begin not to care. Tom Stechschute is as always great, but the French accent is grating.

No, try one of the prior books, they are wonderful.

I don't know. I don't usually read a book I've listened to or vise versa!

If youve listened to books by Jefferson Bass before, how does this one compare?

I enjoyed the last third as much as the other audio books, but it was not as engaging as others. Too much history and the story of the distant past does not seem very interesting or relevant until the end of the book.

Main Character, Bill Brockton. I enjoy the way the book sounds as if Bill is telling the story, with his wry sense of humor and sense of humor coming through.

A cross channel escapade

This is the seventh book in the John Pearce Series. This series must be read in order otherwise one is lost.

The first half of the book deals with Pearce and the Pelicans trying to have the Admiralty agree to try Captain Barclay for perjury. All of the evidence Pearce had went down with the sinking of his last ship. The monies Pearce has coming from prize money is still tied up by the prize board. The three pelicans were forced off the ship they were supposed to wait on for John Pearce to come and get them. They have to make it on their own to London avoiding Press Gangs all the way.

Pearce is sitting in the Pelican Pub when a stranger offers him and his friends employment. The task is illegal but should be profitable. They are to fetch a ship laden with contraband back from France.

The book does not have a much of the sea action as prior books. As usual the book is well written, the history and setting is well drawn. Jonathan Keeble narrated the book.

Disappointing

What disappointed you about Blown Off Course?

The story is boring. Mr. Donachie is locked in a world where he loves his own sense of humor. Problem is, it falls flat.

This is not a full novel, it is a half of a story. Published immediately after this novel Is David Donachie's "Enenies and Every Turn", Obviously a scheme by the author to achieve getting paid twice for one novel.

The series started off well betrayal intrigue action and adventure but after book 5 i started to realise, the author is gonna spin this yarn out and now after reading up to book 8 in the series we still have no real resolve of any of the core issues i feel cheated and i wont be reading further titles in this series or by this author

Dan John Miller is an excellent narrator, perfect for Nathan Heller. He brings the character to life.
