This time out on LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS: A STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE PODCAST Producer Paul, Awesome Andy, Sufficient Shawn, and Gene “Gene the Podcasting Machine” take a look at the first season episode “Dramatis Personae”. After a Klingon ship travelling from the Gamma quadrant explodes outside the station, the only survivor DS9 manages to rescue passes away after uttering the enigmatic phrase, “Victory!” Then, for some odd reason, the entire crew starts to act bat guano crazy, with Kira threatening mutiny, Sisko tinkering with a space clock, and Dax acting like a complete airhead. Fortunately, Odo, with his non-humanoid brain, is unaffected, but will he be able to find out what is causing this madness before the crew start killing each other off. You’ll just have to download the show and take some time…to Listen to the Prophets.
In a wonderful bit of synergy (read that “he demanded he be included on the show”), Gene “Gene the Podcasting Machine” Hendricks joins Producer Paul Spataro, Awesome Andy Leyland, and Satisfactory Shawn Engel for the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode…The Forsaken. When some rather obnoxious Starfleet dignitaries visit the station, Commander Sisko rightly assigns them to be tended to by Dr. Bashir, but even the good doctor can’t control the lustful passions of Lwaxanna Troi, who gets all tingly in her lady bits for the resident shapeshifter, Constable Odo. But does the inclusion of the mother of Next Generation’s most derided counselor into a Deep Space Nine episode drag the show down? You might be surprised to hear what we have to say. So grab your listening device of choice, download the show, and take some time…to LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS.
In the latest episode of LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS: A STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE PODCAST, Andrew Leyland, Paul Spataro, Shawn Engel and Dr. Bill Robinson cover the episode “If Wishes Were Horses”, an episode which has a various characters from the crew’s imagination showing up on the station and causing general havoc. And by general havoc, I mean portraying a lumpy baseball player, a fictional gold spinning imp, and a slutty version of Lt. Dax. So, not everything is a major problem for the characters…unless you consider the whole imagination space rift thingy that is going to destroy the station. How will the crew survive? Was baseball REALLY this desperate to recruit players? Is Bashir the horniest loser in Starfleet? All of this questions and more will be addressed, so go ahead and download the show and take some time out to…LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS.
This time out on LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS: A STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE PODCAST, one half of Hardcastle and McCormick drops by the show to be a grumpy old man who wants these young Bajoran whippersnappers to get off his lawn…LITERALLY. In the episode, Progress, Kira is forced to chose between helping Bajor and the Federation in securing a planet that is rich in resources necessary for the Bajoran people and a kindred spirit who has fought his life to live free of the oppression of a tryannical government. Plus, the trio of Shawn Engel, Andrew Leyland, and Paul Spataro are joined once again by the co-host of Back to the Bins, Dr. Bill Robinson, so you know you’re in for an aural treat. That’s aural as in “ears” and not oral as in…you get the picture. So why don’t you download the show and set some time aside…to LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS.
Do you wanna hear a story? Well, if you are watching along with Paul Spataro, Shawn Engel, and Andrew Leyland, you might hope for a better one as today we’re covering the first season episode “The Storyteller“. When Chief O’Brien and Doctor Bashir travel to Bajor for a medical emergency, a twist of fate puts the Chief in the role of spiritual motivational speaker for a “village” of people who have to use “the power of positive thinking” to fight off a strange cloud creature. Yes, it’s as ridiculous as it sounds. But there’s also a secondary plot involving Jake, Nog, and a thirteen year old Bajoran leader that balances out the weakness of the “It Takes a Village” aspect of the show. Plus there’s general tomfoolery and discussion that you would expect from the three of us. So prepare yourself to battle the Dal’Rok…with some crappy speechifying from O’Brien, on the latest episode of LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS: A STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE PODCAST.
There’s lessons to be learned on today’s episode of LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS: A STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE PODCAST. In the episode, BATTLE LINES, first and foremost, if you are taking the spiritual leader of the planet you are trying to garner favor with through a spatial anomaly 70,000 light years away into an unexplored quadrant of the galaxy, be sure not to let her get killed on an alien planet. Oh sure, something about the planet allows all the people living on it to die and be reborn over annd over again, so Kai Opaka really isn’t technically dead, but she’s never making it back to Bajor, and Commander Benjamin Sisko is to blame for the loss. Not the best moment in fostering understanding. Secondly, don’t let Kira emote…she’s just a little over the top this early into the series. But one thing you should do is let Paul Spataro, Andrew Leyland, and Shawn Engel tell you all about this episode, and how it relates to “Breaking Bad”, the series we’ll be covering after “Firefly” and “Justified”. So grab you favorite podcast listening device, download the show, and take some time to…LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS.
Get ready to scream with delight as lyricist and Rocky Horror Picture Show sequel star Cliff DeYoung guest stars on the latest episode of STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE! Yes, marvel to the man behind such songs as “Come Sail Away”, “Babe”, “Mr. Roboto, and…wait what? That was DENNIS DeYoung?!? Okay, whatever. This time out Paul Spataro, Andrew Leyland, Shawn Engel, and special guest Dr. Bill Robinson discuss and disect the episode VORTEX, where a mysterious alien who might have links to Odo’s origins visits the station and promptly kills another alien who is making a shady deal with Quark. It’s another character developing episode focusing in on our favorite space station constable, and one that seeds the idea of a whole race of shapeshifters, something very important to the DS9 story. Plus, there’s humiliating discussion of one of the host’s love of awful 80’s bubblegum pop, and the hopes of those singers ending up in Playboy. So what are you waiting for?!? Download the show and take some time to…LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS!
Today, in our epic TENTH episode, Paul Spataro, Shawn Engel, Andrew Leyland, and special guest host Dr Bill Robinson get to watch and talk about an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine that is completely 180 from the prior episode, “Move Along Home”. This time out, Quark becomes the leader of the Ferengi empire in the episode, “The Nagus”. And if your perceptions of the Ferengi were based on the toothless portrayals in Next Generation, well prepare to have them shattered here, as their ruthlessness and underhandedness is defined and perfected. Plus we are introduced to the character of the Nagus, played impeccably by Wallace Shawn, a cackling, wrinkly Godfather analogue that makes this one of the best episodes of the first season. Who would have thought that this show could turn out an episode this good after a show starring 80’s porn actors and stupid hopscotch scenes? So if you want to find out how much we loved this episode, I suggest you grab your mp3 listening devices, download the show, and take some time to…LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS!
Is Scott Gardner justified in his claims of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine being the worst of the Star Trek series? Well, if you only went by this lastest episode, you might just agree with him, as this time out Andrew Leyland, Shawn Engel, and Paul Spataro tackle…Move Along Home. Yes, the episode where the members of the command crew of DS9 are captured by the cast of a late 80’s porn shoot and forced to do horrible versions of hopscotch while reciting insipid sing song rhymes. And to add insult to injury…ROCK CLIMBING!!! Yes, it “Lost Continent” and “Hercules Against the Moon Men” didn’t fulfill your quotient for that level of inanity, then this episode surely will. Am I getting across that this might not be out favorite episode of the show? But fear not, because despite the episode not being the best, our coverage and discussion most certainly is. So send off the end of the year by knowing it only gets better from here on out.
In a BRAND NEW episode of Listen to the Prophets, Paul, Andy and Shawn continue their trek (Get it? Because this is…never mind, I’ll stop now) through the first season of Deep Space Nine with the episode THE PASSENGER. Sadly, Iggy Pop is nowhere to be seen (but Siouxsie and the Banshees make an appearance as Shawn failed to get a reference once again). This one deals with a murder mystery dealing with a criminal who just won’t die and might have transferred his BRAIN into a member of the DS9 Crew. Once again, the show apes another drama as we get a crime story episode this time out. Plus we read feedback from you wonderful listeners and chat about tangentially related Star Trek news. What more could you want in a podcast? So get ready to travel to the far reaches of the galaxy and take some time…to LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS.
