Title: The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace
Subtitle: A Brilliant Young Man Who Left Newark for the Ivy League
    Author: Jeff Hobbs
    Narrator: George Newbern
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-23-14
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 1888 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
A heartfelt, and riveting biography of the short life of a talented young African-American man who escapes the slums of Newark for Yale University only to succumb to the dangers of the streets - and of one's own nature - when he returns home.
When author Jeff Hobbs arrived at Yale University, he became fast friends with the man who would be his college roommate for four years, Robert Peace. Robert's life was rough from the beginning in the crime-ridden streets of Newark in the 1980s, with his father in jail and his mother earning less than $15,000 a year. But Robert was a brilliant student, and it was supposed to get easier when he was accepted to Yale, where he studied molecular biochemistry and biophysics. But it didn't get easier. Robert carried with him the difficult dual nature of his existence, "fronting" in Yale, and at home.
Through an honest rendering of Robert's relationships - with his struggling mother, with his incarcerated father, with his teachers and friends and fellow drug dealers - The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace encompasses the most enduring conflicts in America: race, class, drugs, community, imprisonment, education, family, friendship, and love. It's about the collision of two fiercely insular worlds - the ivy-covered campus of Yale University and Newark, New Jersey, and the difficulty of going from one to the other and then back again. It's about poverty, the challenges of single motherhood, and the struggle to find male role models in a community where a man is more likely to go to prison than to college. It's about reaching one's greatest potential and taking responsibility for your family no matter the cost. It's about trying to live a decent life in America. But most all the story is about the tragic life of one singular brilliant young man. His end, a violent one, is heartbreaking and powerful and unforgettable.

A beautiful, elegiac remembrance of a friend
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Not possible, but yes.
    Any additional comments?
Gorgeously written, deeply felt memoir of the author's Yale roommate, the ironically named Robert Peace. Whether he was 'Newark-proofing' himself as DeShaun or 'fronting' as Yalie Rob, Peace was a brilliant, engaging, profoundly conflicted young man. Author Jeff Hobbs writes as though he were born to tell his friend's story. The narrator George Newbern is one of the best I've heard on Audible. No embellishments; just a real understanding of and appreciation for the author's prose.
    Everyone Should Read this Book
What made the experience of listening to The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace the most enjoyable?
Robert Peace, the main character, is charismatic, driven, focused, and flawed. HIs should've been a life of steady ascension, despite a tough start in life, and instead he ended up driving in literal circles. The book functions not only as a tale of triumph and loss, but also as an object lesson in the problems poor kids face in improving their status/lot in life.

    Title: My Early Life
    Author: Winston Churchill
    Narrator: Frederick Davidson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-11-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 504 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
One of the classic volumes of autobiography, My Early Life is a lively and colourful account of a young man's quest for action, adventure and danger. Churchill's schooldays are undistinguished, but he is admitted to Sandhurst and embarks on a career as a soldier and a war correspondent, seeing action in Cuba, in India, in the Sudan - where he took part in the battle of Omdurman, of which he gives us a stirring account - and finally in South Africa.
Taken prisoner by the Boers, Churchill makes a daring escape. Back home he embarks on the political career that is to make him one of Britain's most distinguished parliamentarians.
First published in 1930, when Churchill's most testing time still lay ahead of him, My Early Life is memorable both as an adventure-story and as an account of the events and influences that helped to shape the career of a great Englishman.
    Members Reviews:
The Adventures of a Glow Worm
I remember reading about a dinner party Winston Churchill attended in the late 19th Century. When the table talk turned to God and the Cosmos, a female guest observed that all men are worms. Churchill agreed. All men are indeed worms he said, then added a characteristic coda, but I do believe I am a glow worm.
And so he was. Another reviewer has likened the adventures in this book to those of Indiana Jones, and they are about right (with the crucial, almost unbelievable difference that these adventures arent the product of Hollywood scriptwriters and stunt men).
Accused of rampant self-promotion then and later for his willingness to insert himself into the thick of events, its hard not to see his side of things. Born to privilege, he nevertheless found himself on the outskirts of powerdue to his fathers political miscalculationsand in need of a way to make a living. Not content to merely possess a respected name, he strove to make others respect him. Though without an aristocratic purse he certainly enjoyed an aristocratic self-confidenceand a confidence in his country and its empirethat carried him through events that would leave you and me seeking the nearest bomb shelter.
Besides high adventure there is common sense and uncommon insights here. Do we revere the Greeks and Romans for what they wrote and thought? Of course we dothey came first, when all the good ideas were as yet un-thought and unwritten. Has the similarity between your daily routine and a hell-for-leather cavalry charge ever occurred to you? There is a parallel:
In one respect a cavalry charge is very like ordinary life. So long as you are all right, firmly in your saddle, your horse in hand, and well armed, lots of enemies will give you a wide berth. But as soon as you have lost a stirrup, have a rein cut, have dropped your weapon, are wounded, or your horse is wounded, then is the moment when from all quarters enemies rush upon you.
There is much here to cheer us non-glow worms. He was, for example, a flat failure at school. Mathematics and languages frustrated him as much as they frustrated you and me (well, me at least). He lost his first electiona local by-electionby 1,300 votes. His first foray in the public arenaa speech excoriating the barriers that had been erected in music halls to separate the sexeswas never delivered. And perhaps most oddly of all, considering his later reputation, he had to learn to like the taste of whiskey.
Then there is much to make us feel our worm-hood.

    Publisher's Summary:
At only five years old, Saroo Brierley got lost on a train in India. Unable to read or write or recall the name of his hometown or even his own last name, he survived alone for weeks on the rough streets of Calcutta before ultimately being transferred to an agency and adopted by a couple in Australia.
Despite his gratitude, Brierley always wondered about his origins. Eventually, with the advent of Google Earth, he had the opportunity to look for the needle in a haystack he once called home and pore over satellite images for landmarks he might recognize or mathematical equations that might further narrow down the labyrinthine map of India. One day, after years of searching, he miraculously found what he was looking for and set off to find his family.
A Long Way Home is a moving, poignant, and inspirational true story of survival and triumph against incredible odds. It celebrates the importance of never letting go of what drives the human spirit: Hope.
    Members Reviews:
Hard book to rate... 3 or 4?
"A long way home" is the straightforward telling of Saroo's experiences as a 5 year old stranded on a moving train, being lost in Calcutta and eventually being adopted and taken to Tasmania by new parents. As an adult using childhood memories and Google Earth he eventually figures out where in India his childhood home was located. The actual events as they happened are amazing, however... the writing style and reading of the book are average at best and at times irritating. I should probably have ranked it a 3, but I simply enjoyed the story...
This would make a great family movie and has been briefly depicted in a 28 minute video available on Youtube and produced by "60 Minutes." I watched this after reading the book and enjoyed seeing Saroo, his family and the locations where the book took place.
    Enjoyed the Journey
Would you listen to A Long Way Home again? Why?
Great story. I learned about India, about adoption, bonds of love between mother and son. I continued to think about these people for weeks after I had finished the book.
    Good, but repetitive.
Would you try another book from Saroo Brierley and/or Vikas Adam?
I believe this story is a unique memoir and therefore interesting. It is not however, incredibly well written and therefore I don't think I would read another book from Saroo Brierley and/or Vikas Adam.
What did you like best about this story?
The uniqueness of this story is what I liked best. We can all learn from memoirs and make text to self connections. I also enjoyed the happiness of this story.
A Life Unfolds! Amazing Narration - MUST LISTEN!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This book is a MUST LISTEN! The story in itself is simply unbelievable...a young child gets lost on a train in India and it's about how the turn of events takes his life across India and onwards. The story is written and narrated beautifully, the voice of the narrator is perfect. I would highly recommend this story because it's true and speaks of the strength, endurance and will of a young 4 year old child as he gets lost, realizes it and then pushes past obstacles through instinct and saves his life many times. This book has reminded me about how instinct and will is present in all of us from a young age and sometimes we ignore it as adults.

    Publisher's Summary:
Annie Kagan is not a medium or a psychic, she did not die and come back to life; in fact, when she was awakened by her deceased brother, she thought perhaps she had gone a little crazy.
In The Afterlife of Billy Fingers: How My Bad-Boy Brother Proved to Me There's Life After Death, Kagan shares the extraordinary story of her after death communications (ADC) with her brother Billy, who began speaking to her just weeks after his unexpected death.
One of the most detailed and profound ADC's ever recorded, Kagan's audiobook takes the listener beyond the near-death experience. Billy's vivid, real-time account of his ongoing journey through the mysteries of death will change the way you think about life, death, and your place in the Universe.
In his foreword, Dr. Raymond Moody, author of Life after Life, explains the phenomena of walkers between the worlds, known to us since ancient times, and says that Dr. Kagan's thought-provoking account is an excellent example.

Spiritual & Hip - goes past usual Astral & Cycles
For people who have already read books by Brian Weiss, Michael Newton, Robert Monroe, William Buhlman, Robert Bruce, Dolores Cannon, Eben Alexander, etc etc . . . all the various authors have managed to write about common areas and cycles and happenings beyond this physical Earth and existence or lifetime experience. They didn't write about these common areas intentionally, but readers who cover a broad swath of authors on these topics will start to notice the different authors describing the same places or procedures.
This book touches on some of the commonalities reported on by these authors and others. But what makes it different is an experience described that goes beyond the reincarnation cycle. It's an exhilarating description of experiencing what it's like to be a Universe, or beyond Space and Time, or in light or mental realms.
At the same time, "Billy" is very articulate when "he" returns to report back to his sister and help her accomplish his assignment to create this book. Billy uses complex vocabulary and historical references and sends his sister to look in iTunes for a certain song, or tells her to look up the meaning (via Google) of various names or words, and she finds another song on Youtube - so he appears to be very "connected" to information and communication abilities even from the "other side."
Billy also either manipulates or predicts syncronistic and very appropriate symbolic events.
The story is enjoyable, has a natural flow, and enough mystery to stay interesting from beginning to end. Fun listening if you are a person who likes to compare what people have found out so far about mystical topics that we aren't going to learn about from traditional academia or on the evening news.
A beautiful and mystical story yet down-to-earth because it is so human with our flaws and drama - it manages to be an *experience* in a few places that have fascinating information and descriptions of the "other side" of death for Billy.
It was the first time I read a description of what is past the reincarnation cycle.

Length: 14 hrs and 35 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-20-14
    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 728 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The Third Plate is chef Dan Barbers extraordinary vision for a new future of American eating. After more than a decade spent investigating farming communities around the world in pursuit of singular flavor, Barber finally concluded that - for the sake of our food, our health, and the future of the land - Americas cuisine required a radical transformation.
The revelations Barber shares in The Third Plate took root in his restaurants kitchen. But his process of discovery took him far afield - to alternative systems of food production and cooking that maximize sustainability, nutrition, and flavor. Barber explores the traditional farming practices of the Spanish dehesa, a uniquely vibrant landscape that has been fine-tuned to produce the famed jamón ibérico. Along the Atlantic coast, he investigates the future of seafood through a revolutionary aquaculture operation and an ancient tuna fishing tradition. In upstate New York, Barber learns from a flourishing mixed-crop farm whose innovative organic practices have revived the land and resurrected an industry. And in Washington State he works with cutting-edge seedsmen developing new varieties of grain in collaboration with local bakers, millers, and malters. Drawing on the wisdom and experience of chefs and farmers from around the world, Barber proposes a new definition for ethical and delicious eating destined to refashion Americans deepest beliefs about food.
Traditionally, Americans have dined on the "first plate", a classic meal centered on meat with few vegetables. Thanks to the burgeoning farm-to-table movement, many people have begun eating from the "second plate", the new ideal of organic, grass-fed meats and local vegetables. But neither model, Barber shows, supports the long-term productivity of the land. Instead, he calls for a "third plate", a new pattern of eating rooted in cooking with and celebrating the whole farm - an integrated system of vegetable, grain, and livestock production.
The Third Plate is truly a publishing event: a monumental work of personal insight and global analysis that definitively remakes the understanding of nutrition, agriculture, and taste for the 21st century. Barber charts a bright path forward for eaters and chefs alike, daring everyone to imagine a future for our national cuisine that is as sustainable as it is delicious.

    Good Information - Well Told
If you could sum up The Third Plate in three words, what would they be?
    Know Your Food
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Third Plate?
I am so happy to read a book about food that starts with a discussion of the quality of the soil, the presence of indigenous plants, shrubs and trees as forage for animals, and the criteria of flavor as the most important quality of food. This is an important book and is also informative and entertaining.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I especially enjoyed his description of the Glass Onion cafe and its menu.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Not really since this is non-fiction. Must say that the degradation of American food sometimes makes me cry and any discussion of Round Up Ready seed always makes me cry.

    Publisher's Summary:
Like every girl, Sarah Jakes dreamed of a life full of love, laughter, and happy endings. But her dreams changed dramatically when she became pregnant at age 13, a reality only compounded by the fact that her father, Bishop T.D. Jakes, was one of the most influential megachurch pastors in the nation. As a teen mom and a high-profile preacher's kid, her road was lonely. She was shunned at school, gossiped about at church. And a few years later, when a fairy-tale marriage ended in a spiral of hurt and rejection, she could have let her pain dictate her future. Instead, she found herself surrounded by a God she'd given up on, crashing headlong with Him into a destiny she'd never dreamed of.
Sarah's captivating story, unflinchingly honest and deeply vulnerable, is a vivid reminder that God can turn even the deepest pain into His perfection. More than a memoir, Lost and Found offers hope and encouragement. Perhaps you, like Sarah, find yourself wandering the detours of life. Regardless of how lost you feel, you, too, can be found.

    Awesome book,
This book was well written. In so many ways it reminded me of my own struggle and it helped me to see the direction I should be going in. it's my go to book when I feel that I'm slipping backwards. when that happens I immediately start the book over from chapter one. I've listened to this book at least 5 times.
From time to time i have to remind myself that GOD has a plan for me and my life and as long as I stay focused on him all will be well.

    All of it
    Very relatable
No matter what your own story may be you'll be able to relate and learn.

    awesome read
Sarah Jakes story is inspiring and beautifully shared in this book. I honestly didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did. I wish more women could find the strength to use their trials the way Sarah has...to become stronger and build a brighter and better tomorrow.

Life doesn't get more hilarious than when Chelsea Handler takes aim with her irreverent wit. Who else would send all-staff emails to smoke out the dumbest people on her show? Now, in this new collection of original essays, the number-one best-selling author of Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea delivers one laugh-out-loud moment after another as she sets her sights on the ridiculous side of childhood, adulthood, and daughterhood.
Family moments are fair game, whether it's writing a report on Reaganomics to earn a Cabbage Patch doll, or teaching her father social graces by ordering him to stay indoors. It's open season on her love life, from playing a prank on her boyfriend (using a ravioli, a fake autopsy, and the Santa Monica pier) to adopting a dog so she can snuggle with someone who doesn't talk. And everyone better duck for cover when her beach vacation turns into matchmaking gone wild. Outrageously funny and deliciously wicked, Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang is good good good good!
Being unpopular: "My parents couldn't have been more unreasonable when it came to fads or clothes that weren't purchased at a pharmacy."
Living with her boyfriend: "He's similar to a large toddler, the only difference being he doesn't cry when he wakes up."
Appreciating her brother: "He's a certified public accountant, and I have a real life."

DELTA Adventures with Everyday Tactical Advice
Would you listen to The Mission, the Men, and Me again? Why?
I will definitely listen again. The depth and breadth of everyday practical applications from each of his stories and missions was very captivating. Every mission he talked about, including the planning aspects, had advice that you can apply in your day-to day life. The overarching theme was to consider how your decisions will affect: 1st - Your Mission, 2nd - Your Men, and 3rd - Me.
He also went into some of the concepts that helped him to understand what he needed to do to become a better operator and leader. "The mind has three elementary phases it goes through when it's thinking: saturate, incubate, and illuminate. although they generally occur in order, all three are continuous processes, so your mind is constantly cycling through all three phases. The most effective approach to a situation is to detect our mind's ability to recognize the life patterns that happen" How you handle and solve problems when you encounter them, will ultimately decide the outcome. Throughout the book, he explains his adventure and ends with a life lesson so we can understand, adapt, and master the future.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Peter Blaber
What about Joe Barretts performance did you like?
He did not overdo it when it came to trying to portray the accents of the enemies. The tone and performance was just right.

    Any additional comments?
If you're looking for a story book collection of battles and adrenaline spiking drama, this isn't that kind of book. The author did a great job in both titling it appropriately, as deciding what to include. I took many notes from the author, and have incorporated his leadership lessons into my personal and professional life. A must read for any junior leader, or senior leader who has lost his/her base.
    among the best
this book is among the best of the many spec ops books that have been published since 911 and is a window into the way the "War on Terror" should, and hopefully will, be fought. all those chicken hawks clamoring for "boots on the ground" should pause and consider the alternatives. small, entrepreneurial groups of highly trained spec ops soldiers are the better alternative.
"IT'S NOT REALITY UNLESS IT'S SHARED!"
I'm going to sound cliche'...however it's my reality. This book changed my life! I'm a 30 year old man now (29 when I first read this.) I lost my father to suicide a few years back. I am married and own a window coverings business. I am a bit of a nomad...I lose myself to lack of wisdom and guiding principles.
