Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Biography

Don't overlook this, as it's an amazing personal story
This is one of those books that if u are a man, you'll probably overlook. I certainly did until a good female friend recommended. I am so much in debt, as the lessons in hard decisions and how to recover from bad ones are countless. This book will resonate with you on many levels.
    Raw and powerful
It should be listened to after reading the full book, a deeply moving account. Hearing a widow speak about her husbands suicide is the most heartbreaking and moving thing I can remember hearing in years.
    No notice of abridgment.
I am disappointed to find this was an abridged version of the book. There is nothing on the audible purchase page stating that it was abridged. Sorry I wasted my credit.
    Extremely abridged
This version is probably 1/20th the length of the written memoir. I was expecting a full length book.
Very interesting author & Washington Post biograph
Easy to listen to biography of the author and her Washington Post odyssey while going through struggles of husband depression / suicide & workers strike. Lesson on grit and perseverance for men and women in business , specially in the press publishing roles

    Title: Alone on the Wall
    Author: Alex Honnold, David Roberts
    Narrator: Andrew Eiden, Will Damron
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-09-15
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 633 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Only a few years ago, Alex Honnold was little known beyond a small circle of hardcore climbers. Today, at the age of 30, he is probably the most famous adventure athlete in the world. In that short time, he has proven his expertise in many styles of climbing and has shattered speed records, pioneered routes, and won awards within each discipline. More spectacularly still, he has pushed the most extreme and dangerous form of climbing far beyond the limits of what anyone thought was possible.
Free soloing, Honnold's specialty, is a type of climbing performed without a rope, a partner, or hardware - such as pitons, nuts, or cams - for aid or protection. The results of climbing this way are breathtaking, but the stakes are ultimate: If you fall, you die.
In Alone on the Wall, Honnold recounts the seven most astonishing climbing achievements so far in his still-evolving career. He narrates the drama of each climb along with reflective passages that illuminate the inner workings of his highly perceptive and discerning mind. We share in the jitters and excitements he feels waking in his van (where he lives full time) before a climb; we see him self-criticize in his climbing journal (a veritable Bible for students of the sport); and we learn his secrets to managing fear. Veteran climber and award-winning author David Roberts writes part of each chapter in his own voice, and he calls on other climbers and the sport's storied past to put Alex's tremendous accomplishments in perspective.
Whenever Honnold speaks in public, he is asked the same two questions: "Aren't you afraid you're going to die?" and "why do you do this?" Alone on the Wall takes us around the world and through the highs and lows in the life of a climbing superstar to answer those fascinating questions.

    Great story, narrated by non-climber
This is a great book. Whether you are a climber or not, there is a story to enjoy for everyone. As a climber, I would have enjoyed it more if the narrator had some climbing knowledge. Listening to him mispronounce Chris Sharma's name and not understanding what 5.11 referred to was a bit peeving.
The Emphaaasys is on the wrong sylaaable.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, it's all about Honnold, which is an interesting subject. An interesting slice of the climbing pie.
What other book might you compare Alone on the Wall to and why?
I am not sure. Maybe Kiss or Kill. Or that book about Lance Armstrong. If you like climbing books and can handle some serious mispronounciation, then this book is for you
Would you be willing to try another one of Andrew Eiden and Will Damron s performances?
I am not an orthoepist, but some names of places and important people are mispronounced and it hurts my ears. I can understandthat some of it's just wacky climber lingo, but it's almost like he is mispronouncing the words on purpose. Why would someone do that?
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I really enjoyed it. I didn't laugh or cry, but I liked it.
love climbing and Alex honnold, dislike this book
narrator makes this book very hard to listen to, he comes across as very arrogant and he mispronounces many climbing words. The book reads like a tick list, I did this then this.

    Title: Above the Line
Subtitle: Lessons in Leadership and Life from a Championship Season
    Author: Urban Meyer, Wayne Coffey
    Narrator: Jason Culp
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 41 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 809 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Lessons on leadership and team building from Ohio State's head football coach, drawing heavily on the 2014 season and his team's remarkable run to the championship in the face of adversity.
Since he took over at Bowling Green 14 years ago, Urban Frank Meyer III has established himself as one of the elite coaches in the annals of college football. With three national championships and a record of 142-26, he has achieved remarkable results with many teams. But it is Meyer's recent work at The Ohio State University that has elevated him into the realm of such iconic coaching names as Paul (Bear) Bryant, Knute Rockne, and OSU's own Woody Hayes.
Never was that work more successful than in the 2014 season, which ended with Meyer's Buckeyes capturing the inaugural College Football Playoff Championship with a 42-20 victory over Oregon. That the triumph came with a third-string quarterback at the helm - and after OSU had suffered a brutal early season loss and endured the tragic loss of a teammate - only made the achievement that much more extraordinary.
How did Ohio State, a school many thought did not even deserve to be in the playoffs, end up at the summit of college football? In Above the Line, Urban Meyer answers this question and many more. Pulling back the curtain on the high-profile, high-pressure world he operates in, he offers listeners a groundbreaking game plan for creating a culture of success that engages and inspires the people around them - the very game plan he followed every day in the Buckeyes' historic 2014 season.
A student of psychology long before he became a coach, Meyer believes that trust is the bedrock of great achievements and healthy relationships and explains how to build it, step by step - whether in a team, a family, or a Fortune 500 company.
    Members Reviews:
Great for any coach at any level
The concepts are common denominators no matter the sport or level. It's an excellent combination of philosophies and specific stories/anecdotes that further explain why Coach Meyer has been successful everywhere he's been. I took away specific, useful ideas to apply to the teams I coach.
    Urban
It was very powerful and straight to the point . Wish urban would have given a conclusion or even an introduction. To the book
Must a read for anyone serious about leading!
An excellent lead for a true leader! Coach Meyer lays the foundation for influencing and changing lives.

this is definitely my favorite leadership Business book of all time, and I'm not even a Buckeye fan!

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Gloria Steinem - writer, activist, organizer, and one of the most inspiring leaders in the world - now tells a story she has never told before, a candid account of how her early years led her to live an on-the-road kind of life, traveling, listening to people, learning, and creating change. She reveals the story of her own growth in tandem with the growth of an ongoing movement for equality. This is the story at the heart of My Life on the Road.
Includes an introduction read by Gloria Steinem.
    Critic Reviews:
"My Life on the Road is filled with beautifully told stories of the people she has spoken with and listened to, been changed by, helped organize, got radicalized by, could get lost in, could get found in. It is soul material, human and political, funny and touching, deeply spiritual. I began it again the day after I finished." (Anne Lamott)
"My Life on the Road is an inspiring work, a call for action. Steinem shares her life as a global freedom fighter, inviting readers to continue the journey - and the struggle." (Bell Hooks)
"My Life on the Road is a personal, beautiful look at the deceptively radical act of travel and how it formed one of our most important voices for human rights. By delving deeper into her own thrilling story, Steinem shows us that we all have a fighter inside us - we need only pack our bags and follow her." (Lena Dunham)
    Members Reviews:
    Completely Changed Me
I have been moved and uplifted. Her story, her life have changed me forever. I was raised to think of her as the enemy. A bad person. An NPR interview lead me to purchase the book. I've never been so rapidly opened as I was while reading My Life on the Road.
    Such a Good Friend.
What about Debra Winger and Gloria Steinem s performance did you like?
I can imagine there were many who would love to take on this project. DW was such an inspired choice, her slightly gravelly voice and access to the humor and deep humanity of GS comes across beautifully. I could almost see her nodding in agreement as she read.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Several, her easy friendships with the working women and men she encounters in her travels speaks volumes. I would love to find myself sitting next to her on a long flight.
    Any additional comments?
If you are not familiar with Gloria Steinem, here is a good place to start. No matter what your politics may be, her kindness, loyalty, curiosity and unwavering willingness to learn from every experience is clearly a lesson in speaking the truth.
    Missing Gloria's voice.
I.admire Debra Winger tremendously and loved hearing her voice but I truly missed hearing Gloria Steinem deliver her story.
Actually reading the book may be warranted.
Ms. Steinem provided many tales that are educational and eye opening. The time line was hard to follow, as the book doesn't flow according to time, but to "lessons learned" perhaps? Or are grouped according to theme?
I'm not sure if the following is a critique of the book itself, or the narration, but it wasn't clear when one chapter began and the previous ended. This may have been due to Ms. Winger's narration having little emotion, and was somewhat monotonous at times. I think there were even some mispronunciations?
Mostly, I did enjoy the Ms.

    Language: English
    Release date: 10-06-15
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 1911 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
As a journalist whose career spans three decades, CNN correspondent Tom Foreman has reported from the heart of war zones, riots, and natural disasters. He has interviewed serial killers and been in the line of fire. But the most terrifying moment of his life didn't occur on the job - it occurred at home, when his 18-year-old daughter asked, "How would you feel about running a marathon with me?" My Year of Running Dangerously is Foreman's journey through four half marathons, three marathons, and one 55-mile race. What started as an innocent request from his daughter quickly turned into a rekindled passion for long-distance running - for the training, the camaraderie, the defeats, and the victories. Told with honesty and humor, Foreman's account captures the universal fears of aging and failure alongside the hard-won moments of triumph, tenacity, and going further than you ever thought possible.
    Critic Reviews:
"Even the author's long-suffering family had to admit at the end of the season that he was happier, and readers will enjoy running alongside him." (Kirkus)
    Members Reviews:
ESPECIALLY Good for Those of Us Who Don't Run!
I don't run--I watch the Iron Man contest whilst sitting on the sofa and eating Boom Chicka Pop. I creak; I groan. But the thought of running chills my very blood.
That said, I AM into motivation and inspiration and "My Year of Running Dangerously" is most certainly that. We watch as Tom first beats his 7-year old daughter in a foot race then goes on to join her in a marathon where he can come to terms with her being a full-grown young woman. What starts off as her offhand request turns into his obsession and it's fascinating and inspiring to read, excuse me, listen to.
It's about training in sleet and snow, training after a Broadway show. It's about having a wonderful date with your spouse and winding up asking about running gear at the very end of the date... a mood killer if there ever was one.
There's plenty here for the runner (my husband is a runner) about diet and endurance and pacing, but when you look at his journey as a metaphor, there's so much here about how to see and engage in struggle, about how to live with passion and joy. About fear that eats at you as you get ready to attempt your greatest aspiration. About how to go on when the voice in your head says, "Quit... quit... quit..." and, "You'll never make it." Rising up strong from that? How can any listener not be inspired?
Then too, Tom's wonderful narration is topped only by his ability to write. This is one darned funny book. The similes are to die for (him being as graceful as a pig thrown from a train? Poor pig, but pretty hilarious), and his way of viewing life brings many chuckles and smiles. His explanation about how the title marathon got its name is worth the price of admission.
I finished this book inspired. Maybe not to run (walking, anybody?), but to tackle my latest bit of procrastination, definitely.
Most certainly worth the time and price!
    Truely inspiring tale
The author tells his inspiring story with good humor and humility.

    Members Reviews:
Janet is elegant in her vivid honest pictures
I found so much depth and honesty in this story. I wish I knew Janet in person. Her strength and realness was a gift and her mellifluous voice was a blessing. She guided the reader (as if holding your hand like a big sister would) as she described such challenging realities. Thank you Janet, and thank you for this next generation of kids who face their own challenges.
    Inspirational and life-changing
I enjoyed the book, completely relatable to my story as a transgender woman of color
    Informative, eye opener...
Loved it... Im not Trans. I learned a lot about being Trans though. I suggest that you listen intently.
    Redefining what's possible
Beautifully written journey spoken in Janet's own voice! This book helped me get closer to myself, and to heal past wounds and judgments I still carried on my path to womanhood. Janet has given voice to many women like us or "#GirlsLikeUs" and by telling her story we now know how to unapologetically tell our own.
    A Wonderful Memoir
I've been meaning to read this memoir for a long while and when I saw it was on audible, narrated by Janet Mock herself I couldn't pass it up.
The core of this book is Janet describing her coming of age, a journey she takes us through with gorgeous prose and a refreshingly honest depiction of what her life was like from the time she was a young girl gradually becoming more and more comfortable with herself and doing whatever she could to be true to herself.
It's a great read, Janet's life story one that deserves and begs to be heard, one that gives insight into an experience we don't often see told.
Now in regards to the audiobook itself I couldn't have been happier. Janet has a voice that's wonderful to listen to and an enthusiasm and emotional truth to the way she not only writes but speaks as well.
I couldn't have chosen a better book to start 2016 with and I can't wait to see what's in store for the future of Janet's writing career. And in the meantime I know this will be a book I'll want to come back to and experience for years and years to come.
Thank you so much Janet for sharing your journey!

    Publisher's Summary:
In the tradition of #Girlboss and Mindy Kaling's Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, a funny, quirky, and inspiring memoir from online entertainment mogul, actress, and "queen of the geeks" Felicia Day about her unusual upbringing, her rise to Internet stardom, and embracing her individuality to find success in Hollywood.
The Internet isn't all cat videos - almost.
There's also Felicia Day - violinist, filmmaker, Internet entrepreneur, compulsive gamer, hoagie specialist, and former lonely homeschooled girl who overcame her isolated childhood to become the ruler of a new world - or at least the world of Internet-geek fame and Goodreads book clubs.
Growing up in the South, where she was homeschooled for hippie reasons, Felicia moved to Hollywood to pursue her dream of becoming an actress and was immediately typecast as a crazy cat-lady secretary. But Felicia's misadventures in Hollywood led her to produce her own web series, own her own production company, and become an instant Internet star.
Felcia's shortish life and her rags-to-riches rise to Internet fame launched her career as one of the most influential creators in new media. Now Felicia's strange life is filled with thoughts on creativity, video games, and a dash of mild feminist activism - just like her memoir.
Hilarious and inspirational, You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) is proof that everyone should embrace what makes them different and be brave enough to share it with the world, because anything is possible now - even for a digital misfit.
    Members Reviews:
Don't dismiss this one out of hand!
I had never heard of the author until a Goodreads friend wrote a glowing review of this book, so I decided to check out the audio sample; I liked it a lot, and my library had long hold queues for the book, so I dropped an Audible credit on it - great choice!
Sorry if this sounds fogey-ish to the whippersnapper cognoscenti, but to explain ... Felicia Day had a series called The Guild on You Tube, has moved on to other projects, and is very well known in "gamer" circles, and geekdom in general. Not for you, you're thinking? Not for me either, and I loved this book!
I hate re-hashing plots (as it were), but regarding what to expect: her youth being home schooled in the Deep South (by liberal parents), University of Texas (at I believe 16), a solid career in advertising gigs in L. A., internet addiction to online gaming (role play NOT gambling) which pretty much tanks her acting gigs, then resurrection with her own creative work, which succeeds more than she'd ever expected.
Here's why I'm raving about the book so much: she's naturally funny (largely self-effacing), yet makes serious points effectively. Highly distilled, her message is about living for yourself, not others' expectations, as well as not getting too caught up in (meaningless) drama.
Again, I want to emphasize that I started the book as trying something "out of my comfort zone." If you're a fan of memoirs by someone who expresses herself well (Felicia left Texas with an A average), but are hesitant about the sci-fi/fantasy/gaming aspect, don't worry about it! Unless you've been hanging out in a cave, or the very heights of intellectualism, you'll manage.

Grammy Award, Best Spoken Word Album, 2016
Jimmy Carter, 39th president, Nobel Peace Prize winner, international humanitarian, fisherman, reflects on his full and happy life with pride, humor, and a few second thoughts.
At 90, Jimmy Carter reflects on his public and private life with a frankness that is disarming. He adds detail and emotion about his youth in rural Georgia that he described in his magnificent An Hour Before Daylight. He discusses racism and the isolation of the Carters. He describes the brutality of the hazing regimen at Annapolis, how he nearly lost his life twice serving on submarines, and his amazing interview with Admiral Rickover. He describes the profound influence his mother had on him and how he admired his father even though he didn't emulate him. He admits that he decided to quit the navy and later enter politics without consulting his wife, Rosalynn, and how appalled he is in retrospect.
In A Full Life, Carter tells what he is proud of and what he might do differently. He discusses his regret at losing his reelection but how he and Rosalynn pushed on and made a new life and second and third rewarding careers. He is frank about the presidents who have succeeded him, world leaders, and his passions for the causes he cares most about, particularly the condition of women and the deprived people of the developing world.
This is a wise and moving look back from this remarkable man. Jimmy Carter has lived one of our great American lives - from rural obscurity to world fame, universal respect, and contentment. A Full Life is an extraordinary listen.

    very good
Carter's book is a very good read. It has a nice chronological theme in general. At some points it approaches the topics with a cause and effect of specific issues presented during president Carter's time in the white House. He proceeds to follow up these issues to modern times to show how it has effected the modern world. Thank you, president Carter for this encompassing view of your life, political career, and a touch into the workings and causes of your center.
    Loved it
I was looking for a memoir of an interesting person who is currently in their 80s or 90s. I was hoping to enjoy the journey reflecting on their lives while looking for wisdom to apply to my own journey.
"A Full Life" hit the mark on every level. The fact that it was read by the author was an unexpectedly big bonus.
I will look for other similar audiobooks read by their author hoping they will come close to how exceptional this one addressed my interests
    Amazing Reflections

Carter is a fascinating man. I have read a couple of his books, but this the first of his that is more more memoir than policy.
I listened to this as an audiobook and he narrates it himself. This feels like a bit of a wrap up, especially since his recent cancer diagnosis. There is not a sense of finality about it, but rather a wrapping up.
Carter gives a brief review of his life. If you did not know anything about him, this is a good place to start. He spends time talking about his presidency, but not too much.

    Publisher's Summary:
"It's such a savage thing to lose your memory, but the crazy thing is, it doesn't hurt one bit. A blackout doesn't sting, or stab, or leave a scar when it robs you. Close your eyes and open them again. That's what a blackout feels like."
For Sarah Hepola, alcohol was "the gasoline of all adventure." She spent her evenings at cocktail parties and dark bars where she proudly stayed till last call. Drinking felt like freedom, part of her birthright as a strong, enlightened 21st-century woman.
But there was a price. She often blacked out, waking up with a blank space where four hours should be. Mornings became detective work on her own life. What did I say last night? How did I meet that guy? She apologized for things she couldn't remember doing, as though she were cleaning up after an evil twin. Publicly, she covered her shame with self-deprecating jokes, and her career flourished, but as the blackouts accumulated, she could no longer avoid a sinking truth. The fuel she thought she needed was draining her spirit instead.
A memoir of unblinking honesty and poignant, laugh-out-loud humor, Blackout is the story of a woman stumbling into a new kind of adventure - the sober life she never wanted. Shining a light into her blackouts, she discovers the person she buried, as well as the confidence, intimacy, and creativity she once believed came only from a bottle. Her tale will resonate with anyone who has been forced to reinvent or struggled in the face of necessary change. It's about giving up the thing you cherish most - but getting yourself back in return.

    Blackout: A Knockout
"What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call [her] up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though." J.D. Salinger
I ran across this quote accidentally yesterday and thought of this book, which I've been holding off reviewing because it moved me so much that I felt like I couldn't do it justice. I think, though, that Salinger's quote is the highest compliment one can give an author of a memoir.
Through raw honesty and her wonderful way with words, Sarah Hepola has perfectly, poignantly and humorously captured the true essence of the hole in the soul I've seen in so many addicts/alcoholics. I was prepared to quote numerous passages from her book about "Martini math," and switching bodegas so no one of the guys would catch on to purchasing patterns, and her experiences with strangers when she was drunk (and could remember), but I think one best paints the picture for anyone considering buying this book, of her moment of finally "quitting":

" [t]he need to hold onto booze was primal. Drinking had saved me. When I was a child trapped in loneliness, it gave me escape. When I was a teenager trapped by self-consciousness, it gave me power. When I was a young woman unsure of her work, it gave me courage. When I was lost, it gave me the path -- that way, towards the next drink and everywhere it leads you. When I triumphed, it celebrated with me. When I cried, it comforted me. And, even in the end, when I was tortured by all it had done to me, it gave me oblivion."
