    Publisher's Summary:
The army does not want you to listen to this book. It does not want to advertise its detention system that coddles enemy fighters while putting American soldiers at risk. It does not want to reveal the new lawyered-up Pentagon war ethic that prosecutes US soldiers and marines while setting free spies who kill Americans.
This very system ambushed Captain Roger Hill and his men.
Hill, a West Point grad and decorated combat veteran, was a rising young officer who had always followed the letter of the military law. In 2007 Hill got his dream job: infantry commander in the storied 101st Airborne. His new unit, Dog Company, 1-506th, had just returned stateside from the hell of Ramadi. The men were brilliant in combat but unpolished at home, where paperwork and inspections filled their days.
With tough love, Hill and his first sergeant, an old-school former drill instructor named Tommy Scott, turned the company into the top performers in the battalion.
Hill and Scott then led Dog Company into combat in Afghanistan, where a third of their men became battlefield casualties after just six months. Meanwhile, Hill found himself at war with his own battalion commander, a charismatic but difficult man who threatened to relieve Hill at every turn.
After two of his men died on a routine patrol, Hill and a counterintelligence team busted a dozen enemy infiltrators on their base in the violent province of Wardak. Abandoned by his high command, Hill suddenly faced an excruciating choice: follow army rules the way he always had, or damn the rules to his own destruction and protect the men he'd grown to love.

    Hard truth.
Having served under Captain Hill and First Sargent Scott for the 2008 to 2009 deployment to Afghanistan. I can say with out a doubt they we're the best company level leadership I had encountered in my almost five years at Fort Campbell. Their dedication and love for us (their men) was amazing. The book is true to life, we did not receive proper support and detainees we're repeatedly released even though we had evidence to support further detainment.
    Spot on.
As a former Currahee, this book accurately portrays the best and worst of the 506. No other book or movie describes the frustrations of deployment and the ramifications of toxic leadership better than CPT Hill's account. It was amazing how much came flooding back after listening to Hill's recollection and how accurately he describes Afghanistan. Definitely worth your time.
    Words Cannot Describe
    Stands Alone, Together...Forever
Read, listen, and remember utmost loyalty to brothers above ones self. This was one of the most difficult things I've ever had to read and often uncontrollably had to put it down. Travesty, rage, unparalleled sadness, and even pride fall short to describe my last few days. I love and know several of these men and have been honored to trust my life to their care at some points a long the way.

    Title: Cork Dork

    Author: Bianca Bosker
    Narrator: Bianca Bosker
    Format: Unabridged

    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 565 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Amateur drinker and professional tech reporter Bianca Bosker didn't know much about wine - until she stumbled on an alternate universe where taste reigned supreme, a world of master sommeliers who could, after a single sip, identify the grape a bottle was made from, in what year, and where it was produced, within acres. Where she tasted wine, they detected not only complex flavor profiles but entire histories and geographies. Astounded by their fanatical dedication and seemingly superhuman sensory powers, Bosker abandoned her screen-centric life and set out to discover what drove their obsession and whether she, too, could become a "cork dork".
Thus begins a year and a half long adventure that takes the listener inside elite tasting groups, exclusive New York City restaurants, a California mass market wine "factory", and even a neuroscientist's fMRI machine as Bosker attempts to answer the most nagging question of all: What's the big deal about wine? Counterintuitive, compulsively listenable, and hilarious, Cork Dork illuminates how tasting better can help us live better - and will change the way you drink wine forever.

Kitchen Confidential of wine." (Madeline Puckette,

"Bianca Bosker is an enthusiast. Her passion for wine expertise makes this fun and fact-filled audiobook an extraordinary listening experience. She narrates her text with joy, and her pursuit of the special knowledge and wisdom possessed by sommeliers comes through in every syllable of her journey from oenology novice to working cork dork.... She narrates her audiobook with verve and self-deprecating humor." (

    Vivid
A vivid lively highly engrossing account of the wine. A lovely story that will make you love wine if you don't already or take you further on your wine journey. Beautifully written !
    Interesting but not educational
If you are looking to learn about wine, this is not the book for you. If you want to hear the story of a 20 something journalist trying to insert herself into the world of high wine, this book is great!
I found it to be entertaining but I really did not learn very much about wine aside from the general consensus that the best and most expensive stuff comes from Burgundy and that if you dont want to spend more than a couple dozen dollars per bottle, maybe finely tuning your wine tasting apparatus is not such a good idea.
A Fun Listen, and Lots of Information About Wine
I enjoyed Bianca Bosker's story and narration of her year-long journey with wine and sommeliers. She somewhat demystifies the process of choosing a wine and communicating with a server. Overall its a fun listen, though it runs a bit long I think. There's a lot of detail I could have done without, and I certainly would have preferred fewer f-bombs. Seriously, after enduring about a dozen during two of the latter chapters I was considering deleting the book from my ipod. It's not as if the word has never left my lips, but it was a bit much considering the topic.

    Publisher's Summary:
"My father had more than 50 children."
So begins the haunting memoir of Anna LeBaron, daughter of the notorious polygamist and murderer Ervil LeBaron. With her father wanted by the FBI for killing anyone who tried to leave his cult - a radical branch of Mormonism - Anna and her siblings were constantly on the run with the other sister-wives. Often starving and always desperate, the children lived in terror. Even though there were dozens of them together, Anna always felt alone.
She escaped when she was 13 - but the nightmare was far from over.
A shocking true story of murder, fear, and betrayal, The Polygamist's Daughter is also the heart-cry of a fatherless girl and her search for love, faith, and a safe place to call home.

    Riveting!
Couldn't stop listening. This memoir reads like a novel, LeBaron was the perfect choice to read her own story. I will listen to this one again.
    Boring & poor writing style
I couldn't even make it to a third of the book. There are so many disconnected, underdeveloped anecdotes and the writing style is very poor. I didn't like the author's narration either. I felt like she was reading a bedtime story to a child.
    Redemption...
This book is full of heart wrenching details about little Anna's life but is beautifully redeemed at the end. I definitely recommend it!
    Incredible!!
Loved this amazing story of Gods beautiful redemption of something unimaginable. This story is so important as the scope of the cult is widely unknown.
An amazing true story of hardship & victory
I think I have read every book that is written by someone who would been a part of the LeBaron cult. I have to say that this one was probably my favorite. I think because it gave such hope in her relationship with Jesus Christ that Anna was able to find as she struggled to get over The horrific acts of cruelty and neglect that this girl had to endure for the sake of a madman with far too much power. I think of the words from the book, Unbroken, apply to this cult leader, "The fatal poison of irresponsible power."

A gorgeous, darkly humorous memoir for listeners of Cheryl Strayed about a woman overcoming dramatic loss and finding reinvention, based on this award-winning writer's New Yorker article "Thanksgiving in Mongolia".

    Selfishly Entitled
The author's voice was soothing. But the story! She wanted to do whatever the hell she wanted, and the rest of the world get over it because she admitted wrong doing. But she felt hopelessly betrayed if she was hurt by anyone. Extreme hypocrisy! I have a cheating problem so I'll just cheat no matter who I hurt until I can't deal with it anymore. But Lucy, if you have a drinking problem, it's yours alone because you lied to me, it's not my fault, I have no role in it, I don't feel like dealing with your recovery so I'm out. Just WOW! Brilliantly told though. Could have concluded with some what happened tos: mom, dad, Lucy, Emma, some friends, etc., but then again, like the author's life, it's all about her.
    Empathy
If you don't already understand it, Ariel Levy will teach you the difference between empathy and sympathy. At first, you feel bad for her, and then you join her in her emotion and realize that is what she wants you to do. She wants you to share her journey and her growth, the happy, sad, and the process of hitting rock bottom and truly feeling the pain but slowly recognizing the power within you to continue. Don't feel bad for her, empathize! Also, she is narrating her own story which adds to the impact of the book.
A Woman Who Wears Hers Flaws On Her Sleeve
I LOVED listening to this book, and devoured it in just a few sittings. It's a very raw, personal, and confessional memoir by a woman who wears her considerable flaws on her sleeve in other words, it's exactly my cup of tea. The author does her own performance on the audiobook, adding another layer of intimacy to her story.
Ariel Levy recounts her troubled marriage, her wife's alcoholism, her own cheating, and all the twists and turns leading up to her fertility treatments and subsequent miscarriage, all with such candor that it often sucked the breath right out of me. At one point she references Nora Ephron, who famously said that "Everything is copy," and indeed, Levy has mined her deepest mistakes and regrets for the sake of a story.
The Rules Do Not Apply is a fascinating exploration of modern marriage, makeshift families, infidelity, and what it feels like to be an ambitious, adventurous woman who also feels the tug of parenthood. She's frank about the scope of her grief after her miscarriage (which many people told her was disproportionate), what it's like to be partnered with an alcoholic, and her own compulsion to have an affair. Ultimately, it's about learning you can't really control anything and surrendering to that knowledge.
Some people like to read about heroes and role models, and that's fine, but this is probably not the book for them. For people who enjoy reading stories where people poke around at their darkest corners, this book will scratch that itch.
    shallow, uninteresting, waste of time
This book promised much but delivered little. kinda like reading the Cliff Notes. I don't know why she botheredb to share this...

    Title: The Forgotten Soldier
    Author: Guy Sajer
    Narrator: Derek Perkins
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 21 hrs and 48 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-14-17
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 1110 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
When Guy Sajer joins the infantry full of ideals in the summer of 1942, the German army is enjoying unparalleled success in Russia. However, he quickly finds that for the foot soldier the glory of military success hides a much harsher reality of hunger, fatigue, and constant deprivation. Posted to the elite Grosse Deutschland division, with its sadistic instructors who shoot down those who fail to make the grade, he enters a violent and remorseless world where all youthful hope is gradually ground down, and all that matters is the brute will to survive. As the biting cold of the Russian winter sets in and the tide begins to turn against the Germans, life becomes an endless round of pounding artillery attacks and vicious combat against a relentless and merciless Red Army.
Sajer's perspective as a German foot soldier makes The Forgotten Soldier a unique war memoir, the book that the Christian Science Monitor said "may well be the book about World War II which has been so long awaited". A work of stunning force, this is an unforgettable reminder of the horrors of war.

    A Beautifully Written Heartrending Tragedy
This is one of the most beautifully written, most vivid and horrific accounts of war I've read/listened to in a long time. It's absolutely amazing.
It was so amazing in fact, that I Googled it: and tho' I found that there were a few inaccuracies, it is true, it was lived. Guy Sajer himself says that it's not meant to be a strategic/chronological account but is instead meant as an emotional rendering of what he experienced.
And emotional it is. It starts with him as an optimistic young soldier fighting for the Germans even tho' he's half French (from what I Googled, it is suggested that he did it because he felt the Germans were Europe's best hope to save countries from Bolshevism), goes through testing as a member of an auxiliary unit, and then the greatest part of it is flat-out war and chaos.
There is smoke, fire, death all around him. Struggling innocents, struggling participants. I'd just finished listening to "Enemy at the Gates", about Stalingrad, and here in "The Forgotten Soldier" there was a greater accounting of it at the costs of Germany. But there is so much more: more battles, more to be won and lost, and so much hunger and privation.
I have never suffered so much alongside another person as I did with this book, it's so humane.
It's not just warfare that's soooo vividly portrayed; this is just a well, well-written book. Nature, comradeship, fear are written elegantly, with brilliant prose, and Derek Perkins delivers it flawlessly, humanely.
    This is a credit well-spent, 21 1/2 hours I wouldn't trade for the world.
    an amazing book
Story of survival as a German soldier in Ww2 Soviet Union. You don't usually think of them as human, with human emotions. They were, and it is a very touching story. At the end, the symptoms he suffers are clearly post traumatic stress disorders. An amazing story of survival.
    Heartbreaking, exhausting, and insightful
This is an exhausting listen, but very worthwhile. You'll find criticism of the accuracy of the historical details, so it's not meant as a tactical military history. It nonetheless does an amazing job of putting the listener with the men who lived this and providing a window into how they likely experienced it.

What do you do when you discover information that is before its time? What do you do when your curiosity takes you on an adventure that is so bizarre that there is nothing normal to relate to? This is what happened to Dolores Cannon in 1968, long before she began her career as a past-life hypnotherapist and regressionist. Travel back with us to that time when the words reincarnation, past-lives, regression, walk-ins, New Age were unknown to the general population. This is the story of two normal people, who accidentally stumbled across past-lives while working with a doctor to help a patient relax. It began so innocently, yet it crossed the boundaries of the imagination to open up an entirely new way of thinking at a time when such a thing was unheard of. It went totally against the belief systems of the time. It was so startling that they should have stopped, but their curiosity demanded that they continue to explore the unorthodox. The experiment changed the participants and everyone involved, and their beliefs would never be the same. Dolores Cannon is now a world-renowned hypnotherapist who has explored thousands of cases in the 40 years since 1968, and has written 15 books about her discoveries. Her books are translated into more than 20 languages. She is teaching her unique form of hypnosis all over the world. When she lectures people ask, "How did you get started on all of this?" This is the story of her beginnings. The book was written in 1980, her very first book. It has laid dormant, gathering dust, until now, waiting. Now is the time for it to come forth. Enjoy the adventure!

One of the best Past Life books of many I've read
I read the hard copy of this book some years ago, but still found this audio book version gripping. It is the past life regression of one woman that goes back through American history and then back to early Europe and the greater reality spirit/soul entity realm.
The historic first-person views of rural American life and Chicago city life and rural/town/castle life in the United Kingdom and early Germany were realistic and all the details that could be confirmed later on via research made the regressions even more interesting - like little details of specific cars (like the Stanley Steemer or the Packard), who was the President/King/Queen at the time, names of cities, towns, rivers, streets. Names of people. Details of farm chores of earlier times that are no longer practices of today. Speaking in a different language.
Even more interesting was when the spirit/soul entity was asked to look at the JFK Dallas incident and what was described. And, another incident I hadn't heard of before, when a submarine called the Scorpion went missing. The description of the soul/spirit entity of the tall red-haired man and what he did was not one of the theories included in the books about this submarine listed on Wikipedia. This book isn't even listed on the Wikipedia article along with other books that covered the missing submarine - but that website is hard core materialistic.
The narration was good. I hope The Convoluted Universe series will be narrated too in the future. With a good narrator. That's important!
    I loved it
Wow, this book is a lot of fun. I enjoyed the narration. Just more proof that spirituality isn't hocus pocus, and I love their practical outlook on the phenomenon.

    Publisher's Summary:
At only five years old, Saroo Brierley got lost on a train in India. Unable to read or write or recall the name of his hometown or even his own last name, he survived alone for weeks on the rough streets of Calcutta before ultimately being transferred to an agency and adopted by a couple in Australia.
Despite his gratitude, Brierley always wondered about his origins. Eventually, with the advent of Google Earth, he had the opportunity to look for the needle in a haystack he once called home and pore over satellite images for landmarks he might recognize or mathematical equations that might further narrow down the labyrinthine map of India. One day, after years of searching, he miraculously found what he was looking for and set off to find his family.
Lion is a moving, poignant, and inspirational true story of survival and triumph against incredible odds. It celebrates the importance of never letting go of what drives the human spirit: hope.
    Critic Reviews:
"Narrator Vikas Adam's clear diction and engaging Australian accent are easy to embrace right from the beginning.... The incredible true story of a lost child who travels from India to Australia is fascinating; assigning the elegant simplicity of good storytelling to Adam was a stroke of genius. His pacing is deliberate and calm, allowing listeners to absorb the story's details fully. There is no need to dress this story in a melodramatic voice - the story itself carries all the emotion we need. Rather, Adam steps back to give us space to feel it." (AudioFile)

    Simply Astonishing True Story
We saw the movie based on this memoir last weekend, and immediately I looked for the book here on Audible, because I didn't want the story to end. I don't think I will ever forget this miraculous story. Be aware that the book originally was titled A Long Way Home, but as far as I can tell this is the same exact recording, only with a few extra minutes of Epilogue added. The narrator reads a tad slowly, but is otherwise capable, and appropriately naturally speaks with an Aussie accent but does perfect Indian accents for Saroo's birth family and other Indian characters. WHAT AN AMAZING STORY--See the movie FIRST! I know that's the opposite of the usual recommendation, but in this case it makes the best sense. The movie pulls you strongly and immediately into the story, and the book more slowly and methodically lays out the details, including details that didn't make it into the screenplay for the film.
    Grade: A
    Listen on higher speed
Story is okay. The reader is very slow but tolerable if you listen on 1.25x the normal speed. I just think this book could have been 2/3 the length with better writing.
    Amazing Story!
This story underlines the true definition of the human struggle. It also shines a light on the social ramifications of a political system catering to whims of those with, rather than those without.
    Such an incredible story!
I've heard about Saroo's story like probably a lot of people when the movie Lion was out. But I thought it would be too heartbreaking to watch. So I searched for the book and I'm so glad that I did. This is such an incredible and inspiring story, I feel like doing something more to help others.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the highly anticipated sequel to her New York Times best seller, Etched in Sand, Regina Calcaterra pairs with her youngest sister, Rosie, to tell Rosie's harrowing yet ultimately triumphant story of childhood abuse and survival.
They are five kids with five different fathers and an alcoholic mother who leaves them to fend for themselves for weeks at a time. Yet through it all, they have each other. Rosie, the youngest, is fawned over and shielded by her older sister, Regina. Their mother, Cookie, blows in and out of their lives "like a hurricane, blind and uncaring to everything in her path".
But when Regina emancipates herself as a minor and escapes, her siblings are separated. And as Rosie discovers after Cookie kidnaps her from foster care, the one thing worse than being abandoned by her mother is living in Cookie's presence. Beaten physically, abused emotionally, and forced to labor at the farm where Cookie settles in Idaho, Rosie refuses to give in. Like her sister, Regina, Rosie has an unfathomable strength in the face of unimaginable hardship - enough to propel her out of Idaho and out of a nightmare.
Filled with maturity and grace, Rosie's memoir continues the compelling story begun in Etched in Sand - a shocking yet profoundly moving testament to sisterhood and indomitable courage.

    Amazingly told an narrated
Thank you to the family for sharing their stories thank you for sharing how love can keep strong even in distance and it takes one person to anchor you and one day at a time we can walk through hell and become more than a statistic.
    Moving memoir
After finishing Etched in Sand by Rosie's sister Regina Calcaterra, I missed the stories of the five children I'd come to know. They are sad stories, but the love and perseverance shared by these siblings is so powerful, it left me yearning for more. Rosie delivers as she tells her stories of hurricane Cookie. My heart still aches for this family. I'm moved by the friendships that carried Rosie through and led her to be a loving mother. What a beautiful legacy Rosie and her siblings have created by breaking the cycle.

I loved this book. Rosie is a resilient young girl who overcame a heartbreaking childhood. I read the book once and listened to it twice. So we'll written and do well read. Everyone needs to listen to this book atleast once.

This book is very well written, and the narrator does a great job! I was riveted to this book!
There is no greater strength ....
Than that of child's will . This book allows us to see there is hope and strength in every child. As a mother it helps you to know that loving your child is the greatest gift you can give them. As a person this book allows you to heal with Rosie and know that some of our struggles pale in comparison; it will change your day your week and for me many days beyond that. Thank you Rosie

    Personal note:
Hello, my darlings! I am incredibly pleased to present Buffering: Unshared Tales of a Life Fully Loaded!
As a big fan of memoirs, I wanted to try my hand at writing about the events of my life that deserve a little more consideration than can be accomplished in 140 characters or a six-minute vlog. Now on the cusp of turning 30, I'm ready to expose some parts of my life that I haven't shared before. Before, it was all about privacy, process, and time. And now the time has come! I'm ready to put myself out there for you.
I'm a little nervous about all these vulnerable words going into the world, these tales about my love life, the wrestling I've done with faith, how I feel about sex and my family and myself. I've had a lot of trials, a lot of errors, but also a lot of passion. Here's the thing: I've always found comfort in the stories shared by others, so I hope my stories, now that I feel ready to tell them, will bring you some comfort, too.
And when you listen to this book, please remember: Buffering is just the time it takes to process.
    Enjoy!
    Love, Hannah

She made me feel less alone.
If you could sum up Buffering in three words, what would they be?
    Energetic. Heart-stopping. Honest.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Hannah, because even though we are SO VERY different - her and I have felt some of the same feelings - towards the people everyone kept telling us "were in charge".
What about Hannah Hart and Judy Young s performance did you like?
I felt like they were both talking TO me and not AT me. I felt like I was sleeping over at Hannah's house, and that it was her turn to tell me everything about herself, like she trusted me.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The part where she explained she would wave back to her house after exiting - to go to school...so that whoever was watching would think that their was someone in the house. I used to do that too.
    Any additional comments?
I didn't know who Hannah was before reading her book. I came across it, and I finished it in a couple of days. It was that good. And I was that connected.
    Beautiful
Narration was impactful and sincere. Despite family trauma, mental illness, and poverty, Hannah Hart remained recklessly optimistic
    Amazing!
Hannah opens up her life story in a way that is heartfelt and endearing. I feel as if I was able to walk with her through her story and feel all the feels. I have seen pieces of my story in hers and learned so much about mental health and self care.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the most candid and compelling sports memoir since Andre Agassi's riveting bestseller Open, former San Francisco 49er, Super Bowl champion, NFL MVP, and Hall of Famer Steve Young gives listeners an unprecedented and stunning inside look at what it takes to become a super-elite professional quarterback.
Steve Young was not expected to become one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. A devout Mormon, he had a perfect GPA in school, studied Latin and calculus, and was blessed with a photographic memory. His mother pleaded that he not play football. But Young was determined to become the next Roger Staubach.
QB tells the story of a boy with a gentle demeanor who overcame personal fears and his teammates' and coaches' indifference to reach the pinnacle of America's most violent game. Football was a test and a quest: listed eighth on the depth chart at Brigham Young University, Young was told he'd never play quarterback in college. He went on to endure intense media scrutiny as the highest-paid player in sports history before he ever stepped on the field as a professional. As a 49er, he went head-to-head with the legendary Joe Montana in what became the NFL's greatest quarterback controversy.
But Young's biggest hurdles were invisible to the public: the physical pain that comes with being an ordinary-size man in a league of giants; the loneliness of playing sixteen seasons as a bachelor; and an undiagnosed case of separation anxiety that made him dread getting out of bed and caused him to vomit in locker room bathrooms before games. Through sheer grit, Young put on a helmet week after week, season after season, leading his team to a Super Bowl championship, endearing himself to both the city of San Francisco and football fans everywhere.

    Uplifting and motivating
I've read several books on Steve young throughout the years. This is by far the Best! But it is much more than a book about a football player and a game. The struggles he had through his life with anxiety, overwhelming odds, discouragement, fear, etc. speak to everyone! You or someone you know is suffering with one or more of these trials right now and his story can help give courage and motivation to us all!
Fascinating Insight- Young Should Narrate Entirety
Would you consider the audio edition of QB to be better than the print version?
Not Necessarily but it was really well done. The audio version would be superior if Steve Young narrated the entire book and not just the first chapter. That first chapter was amazing.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Steve Young. I was impressed at his vulnerability and honesty. Knowing many people who suffer with anxiety, it was refreshing to see the struggles behind Steve Young's success.
Have you listened to any of Steve Young and George Newbern s other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
"Life Behind the Spiral" serves two meanings. It's a pretty clever title. Maybe a movie title would be just "Spiral"
    Amazing leadership and spiritual example
Steve young is a fantastic example of leadership, perseverance, hard work, and spirituality. Loved it. This was an amazing biography.
    Deal with Anxiety? Read this!
any parent with a child that has anxiety should read Steve Young's book.
