A Radically Different Approach to Self-Medication

This book came to my attention a few months before its release, when a caring friend mentioned that it might be of interest to me. This friend, along with most people who know me, was aware that I struggle daily with my mood disorder, and she was right in thinking I'd be curious to learn about a radically different approach to 'self-medication'.

Ayelet Waldman also suffers from mood disorders and according to her, she has taken just about every pharmaceutical drug available on the market, AND suffered all the accompanying side-effects. Treating a mood disorder such as bipolar disorder is complicated business and usually involves a whole drug cocktail to stabilize both the highs and lows. Approaching menopause, Waldman found that she was becoming more and more out of control, and the feeling she was putting her marriage at risk with repeated angry outbursts along with suicidal thoughts prompted her to seek a solution.

Having studied a book on the subject of microdosing which provided helpful guidelines, and not least of all, having procured a small vial of LSD from a mysterious source, she decided to become her own research subject for a month-long trial which involved taking minute amounts of LSD every three days and journaled any changes she was able to perceive over this period. At the kind of doses she was taking (about one-tenth of a standard hallucinogenic dose), the user experiences no hallucinatory effects whatsoever. Instead, she describes the overall effect of the experience as providing a feeling that one is more focused, more in control and with the general impression that one is just having...

A little thin

Would you try another book from Simone Biles and/or Imani Parks?

While you can tell the enthusiasm put into his book by the author was incredible, the story at felt thin at times. Significant life events did impact the author and her story is interesting but the book lacks alot of substance and at times, the writing Seems like a space filler. Example: So then my neighbor made a fort and I said", I like your fort". And she said, "OK". There are numerous paragraphs similar to this throughout the book which I tried to be forgiving about, but eventually I just couldn't let them go. Maybe there wasn't really a full book to be made from the story. Overall not bad but i was left waiting to finish so i could move on to my next book.

Flawless

Simone story is truly amazing. to go from a foster youth to a multi metal winning Olympic athlete is almost impossible. but what is most inspiring to me is that she handled it all with such Grace and it's truly real.

Simone is a queen! Excellent book about her life. Her story tells us to never give up.

Cute story. Better suited for teens & young adult

The narrators depictions of characters, other than Simone, all sounded the same. There was a strange accent of some sort being used which was rather annoying.

The overall story was very nice. Interesting to see her journey. Since gymnastics was her life and she is rather young I found the story missing live experiences relatable to an older audience. This book is great for younger audience trying to find themselves through adolescent into going adulthood. Overall I find it an easy listen.

Okay Book

I realize that this is not a fictional book and Jaycee is not a trained writer but I was expecting more in this book. it was a little like reading a child's dairy. No disrespect intended at all and I don't claim to understand what she went through because I don't but for some reason I felt something was missing. I'm sure my critique won't hurt her feelings though...she's a tough girl....and an inspiration.

One of those books its hard to finish.

Lack luster. It should of been titled a journal. I was hoping to a follow up to how her daughters and herself are doing without the cringe worthy ten year old voice.

Not at all what I thought it was going to be. It sounds like a seven-year-old is reading the book. Very boring.

Taking ownership of mistakes

I had the opportunity to meet Jay and hear him tell a small portion of his story at a conference in Pebble Beach. It inspired me to buy the audible version of his book. It had to have been hard to expose himself to relive these events in telling his story and the raw emotion plays through in the audible version. It was one of those books that I wanted to keep listening to every chance I got. Powerful message for young people. You will root for Jay's star to continue to rise after finishing this book.

Great listen but no surprises

Decent memoir about a life around basketball. A familiar story if you have followed Williams's career much. Was hoping for more insight into why/how he was able to get his life back on track better than many "fallen" athletes, but his transitions all come off as simple/immediate. Not the best performance (reading) but is good to be done by author.

I'm glad that I've picked up this book for reading/listening. Usually I'm not a big fan of autobiographical books but for some reason this one made a cut to my library... and I'm happy for it. Such a powerful story about climbing the mountain, falling down, and climbing to the top yet again. A lot of life messages for all folks. Especially valuable book for everyone involved in basketball: players, parents, coaches, and administrators. Would make it a mandatory reading for all NBA rookies... before signing the contract :)

Loved it

My husband is born-in-America, half-Irish, half-Chinese, adopted. I didn't buy this for him or to learn about his ancestors' culture but it did play a little influence on why it caught my attention. I've always wanted to travel but have 3 kids - so I listen to a lot of travel books.

I loved how he easily slipped between English and mandarin, how he described some of the layout and his interactions with locals. He didn't get too political and yet he still gave me an idea of what part communism plays in China.

A Hero's Story

This book is the tale of two SEALs who went to great length to accomplish their mission, and at the same time, take care of each other. The description of the events is very good, and the description of the rescues riveting.

Outstanding and inspiring story and book

Really loved listening to this. Inspiring as well as informative. I learned a lot about the war in Vietnam, and the place these two men occupied. Dick Couch did a great job. Highly recommend.

Heroes for sure!

Outstanding book about two men, military service, Brotherhood, and Valor. I cannot find the words to fully describe this book except to say it is as extraordinary as the two men whose story is told: Mike Thornton and Tom Norris, United States Navy SEALs. Thank you gentlemen for your service to America and, as you both say, for just doing your jobs.

Two amazing men, one amazing story

I learned of Mike Thornton and this book through the Jocko Podcast.

The excerpts Jocko read detailing the heroic actions of that day wet my appetite for reading the entire book.

Through reading this book you get a sense of the super-human attributes that set Navy SEALS apart from the rest of us.

Two MOH recipients from the Vietnam war detailing the various operations that led to their awards gives us all the rare window into the trials and tribulations that are usually secreted away.

Hilarious Yet Real

What made the experience of listening to My Holiday in North Korea the most enjoyable?

Simultaneously hilarious and sad. You can't help but laugh out loud at the paradoxical nature of the country and it was interesting to see things from the perspective of a curious westerner (unlike most books about North Korea which are written by or about DPRK defectors). With her first world perspective being so similar to my own it felt as if I was actually there with her, which made it even more hilarious because her reactions and responses were so similar to my own as I read. I also like the way she researched the nonsense they told her and matter-of-factly dropped side notes of the actual truths throughout the book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Fresh handler was my favorite character. Her innocence in comparison to other characters such as older handler was refreshing. She wasn't completely consumed by the propaganda and seemed genuinely interested in the outside world

What does Jeena Yi bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Personality. She gave emotion to each line of the book allowing me to feel the emotions from sarcasm to confusion of Ms. Simmons as she told her story

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed a lot. But underneath each laugh was a somber reality that is North Korea

Any additional comments?

Unfortunately, despite her hilariously entertaining accounts of her experience, it is impossible to avoid coming back to the reality that this is life for North Koreans and they don't have other options. They are prisoners in their own homes and what we are allowed to see and laugh about in this book is the "good", choreographed side of the country, the rest is far worse and the strong desire to want to help them will inevitably sneak up on you at the end of every page. Nevertheless, she does a great job of depicting the Kim regime's big bad propaganda machine.

Alice parts roll my eyes.

I liked the overall story, as I love reading all stories from NK. I did NOT like the Alice quotes at all. I rolled my eyes every time they came up. The quotes were just interruption, breaking the pace of the story that I liked to hear.

Absolutely Riveting

I loved it!

It was absolutely riveting and I really appreciated hearing directly from Marcia as she reflected back on her feelings and experiences during that difficult time.

I enjoyed her candour and her no-holds-barred blunt options; she doesnt pull any punches! (nothing nice to say about Judge Lance Ito Yikes!!!)

I was so absorbed by the behind the scenes machinations, it made me want to read a version told by someone on the Dream Team to see how their brains work. Being in the he did it camp myself, I can completely sympathize with the prosecutions case and cant imagine their devastation upon losing but what drove the defence? Money? I find it impossible to imagine that they really thought he was innocent.

Marcia On Point!

Generally, I'm deterred and purposely refrain from an abridged novel as it neglects poignant details, however, Marcia hit the highlights and articulately delivers with unwavering passion.

Over 20 years later and due to the recent TV show I'm finally listening to books I had not yet listened to about the OJ Simpson trial. I lived in Southern California back then and it was THE news for the months of took for the trial. It is nice getting some perspectives not possible at the time.

I feel this abridged version is perfectly adequate for this story, and I don't think if the unabridged version comes out of would be worth the purchase or the credit to hear it.

I am glad that Clark herself read the story and feel she's is a very good reader.

OJ did it, and he got away with murder because of many problems and not just the Prosecutors, if anything I think the biggest failure sits with former Judge Ito to be in control of his Court. I think the results and demeanor of the civil trial proves that.

Next book I'm listening to regarding this trial is the book by Vincent Bugliosi. Then I'll be OJ'd out!

An inside look

After completing the recent Fox series on OJ I took renewed interest in the story. I always thought he was guilty & was shocked & saddened to watch the actual story unfold along with the racial issues that were evident. I was disgusted by the "dream team".

Would you try another book from Wolfgang Faust and/or George Backman?

So far as I can tell, Wolfgang Faust is not a real person. The name is probably a pseudonym for a ghostwriter, furnished by Sprech Media.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Anger, but not because of the content of the story. I'm mad because I'm fairly certain this is not a memoir, is not historical fact, and is most likely is a fictional story in which none of the people and events are real.

Early on in the book, I noticed that there was no reference to specific divisions, regiments or locations. That's pinged my internal "BS" meter. The author said the story took place in October 1944 and from his description, he faced IS-3 tanks. the IS-3 didn't make an appearance on the battlefield until the last weeks of the war in April 1945. That's pinged my internal "BS" meter some more.

The "author" is a Tiger tank driver that can apparently see every single detail of a battle from his driver position in the Tiger. If you've never seen the driver position of a Tiger, Google it. The vision slit is very small and provides a *very* narrow field of view. In fact, a Tiger driver cannot effectively drive in battle without commands and directions from the tank commander, who has a better view from the command position in the turret, but by no means could the commander be able to provide even a partial description of the battle occurring around the tank as Faust did. The description Faust gives of battles occurring around him are so detailed, it's as if he were either a field grade officer, directing the battle and observing results, or an omnipotent being, floating over the battlefield seeing and experiencing everything. I find it VERY hard to believe that he (if he is even a real person), an enlisted man in the driver seat of a Tiger, saw a tenth of what he described.
